Al-Shabab reneges on promise to allow famine relief
Al-Shabab have said that aid agencies they expelled from the region earlier will not be allowed to return to help in Somalia as it continues to struggle with a worsening famine. Al-Shabab, is going back on a previous promise to open up the nation to relief.

The UN World Food Program was planning to return to Somalia with food shipments by air and sea. The U.N. told reporters that it had not heard about the rebels' new position and planned to go ahead with aid. Al-Shabab had promised to allow relief agencies with "no hidden agendas" to deliver aid to Somalia, according to the report.

Al-Shabaab spokesman, Ali Mohamud Raghe, told a press conference late Thursday that agencies that were banned by them would not be allowed to operate in their territory.

"They had problems with people and had a hidden agenda. We shall also expel any agency that causes problems for Muslim society," he said, urging hungry Somalis to stay at home and wait for the rain rather than going to foreign-run refugee camps. According to a Voice of America story, Al-Shabab has called the UN's declaration of famine in Somalia "a propaganda".

#3  They'd loose control of the 'masses' because the average Somali would realize how ineffective and unconcerned the Al-Shabab folks really are about the 'common man's dilemma'.

It's the same reason many Soviet, African and Latin American dictators refuse outside help in a time of national disaster.

#4  If Allan wanted you to eat, cheeseburgers would fall from the sky like rain. Oh, wait! There is none of that either.

Of course, if Allan was Milton Friedman, you would have a market economy where you could buy a cheeseburger for the Somali equivalent of a buck twenty five.

French FM to hold talks on Libyan crisis in London Monday
(KUNA) - French Foreign Minister Alain Juppe will hold talks Monday in London with his British counterpart William Hague, diplomats said here Friday.

The talks are expected to focus on the ongoing conflict in Libya, where the French and British air forces are playing a leading role in attacks against forces loyal to the Libyan government.

La Belle France has already acknowledged it provides for 30 percent of the air operations in Libya and Britannia is believed to pick up another substantial portion of the NATO
...the North Atlantic Treaty Organization. A collection of multinational and multilingual and multicultural armed forces, all of differing capabilities, working toward a common goal by pulling in different directions...
interventions.

La Belle France and Britannia were also crucial actors in getting the adoption of a UN Security Council resolution last March to permit "all measures" to be used to protect Libyan civilians from attack by the forces controlled by Libyan leader Muammer Qadaffy.
...who single-handedly turned a moderately prosperous kingdom into a dictator's fantasyland...
Both Juppe and Hague have said that Qadaffy must leave power to pave the way for reconciliation and the formation of a new government in Libya, one that would have a strong participation by the National Transition Council (NTC).

La Belle France is the key backer of the NTC and was first to recognize that body as the "legitimate holder of government authority." La Belle France has also delivered weapons to the Libyan opposition on a small scale, but this act has been challenged by opponents of the campaign as a breach of UN Security Council resolutions which call for a full arms embargo on the North African country.

Both Britannia and La Belle France have deployed attack helicopters in Libya to bolster operations against more mobile Qadaffy forces that have managed to evade complex air strikes.

Earlier this week, in an apparent easing of the French position, Juppe said that Qadaffy could be allowed to stay in his country as long as he renounced all political and military power and a future role in politics.

Defence Minister Gerard Longuet also stated here earlier that Qadaffy was losing control of his oil sector and was losing substantial income after opposition rebels took control of important oil facilities in their progress to the capital, Tripoli.

PM assures NA of maintaining peace in Karachi
[Dawn] Prime Minister Syed Yousuf Raza Gilani
... Pakistain's erstwhile current prime minister, whose occasional feats of mental gymnastics can be awe-inspiring ...
assured the National Assembly that the government will maintain peace in Bloody Karachi
And so it will be, so long as peace can be defined as many more dead bodies on all sides of the the political divide.
Gilani urged the leadership of all political parties to come up with solution to improve the situation in Bloody Karachi.

"Bloody Karachi's stability is interlinked with political and economic stability of the country, therefore we cannot afford any instability in Bloody Karachi," Gilani said while speaking in the National Assembly.

He condemned the gang-war incident in Maleer-Landhi that resulted in the killing of people and sought report from provincial government.

He said that the findings of the report will be presented before the house.

"I directed the chief whip of the party from London to ensure quorum in the present session so that a debate could be held on this important issue and get suggestions from the parliamentarians," he said.

Moreover, the MQM MNA Haider Abbas Rizvi blamed the government by calling hard boyz as state-owned.

Displacement a blessing in disguise for Kurram children
[Dawn] Displacement of people in central Kurram Agency
...home of an intricately interconnected web of poverty, ignorance, and religious fanaticism, where the laws of cause and effect are assumed to be suspended, conveniently located adjacent to Tora Bora...
due to military operation has proved to be a blessing in disguise for children as thousands of them have been administered oral polio
...Poliomyelitis is a disease caused by infection with the poliovirus. Between 1840 and the 1950s, polio was a worldwide epidemic. Since the development of polio vaccines the disease has been largely wiped out in the civilized world. However, since the vaccine is known to make Moslem pee-pees shrink and renders females sterile, bookish, and unsubmissive it is not widely used by the turban and automatic weapons set...
vaccine after a gap of three years.

"Some 10,000 children who moved to lower Kurram in the wake of military operation have been vaccinated against polio," Dr Omar, who is supervising the health-related affairs in central and lower Kurram, told Dawn by phone.

He said that about 23,000 children had not been given polio drops in the last three years because of militancy. He said that the health workers didn`t visit this inaccessible area in the past because of insecurity.

Dr Omar said that about 11,000 families had decamped their homes in central Kurram and shifted to lower part of the violence-wracked agency and the nearby Hangu district
... Hangu is famous for its greenery, hills, beauty and water. Most of the people of this area are Bangash & Orakzai Pashtuns. Part of the Bangash are Shia. The Orakzai and the Sunni Bangash are determined to kill them...
.Over 1,400 families have been registered at the New Durrani Camp while the remaining families are residing with the host families and relatives and in the government buildings. Local authorities have set up three mobile teams for administering polio drops to children in the camps and other places.

The entire tribal region is plagued with polio virus. Last year, the Federally Administered Tribal Areas (Fata) made headlines when it emerged as the single largest polio-endemic area in the world with 76 cases of the total 142 confirmed cases recorded in Pakistain. Of 60 cases this year, the Fata has registered 20, the highest in the country.

After threatening funds stoppage last year, the donor agencies, including the WHO and Unicef, released the funds only when they were assured that military authorities would facilitate the vaccinators` access to the areas which had been declared peaceful and free of bad turbans, according to officials responsible for the polio efforts.

The UN had also suggested in the past to enter into agreement with Taliban in tribal areas on the pattern of Afghanistan to ensure vaccination of the children.

However,
nothing needs reforming like other people's bad habits...
the unending curfew-like situation and Taliban`s doubts that the campaign was a ploy by the US to target them have hampered the polio vaccination campaign in the North Wazoo Agency.

"The Taliban shura has no objection to the vaccination, but they are skeptical that the campaign may be used to drop chips and they may end up hit by the US drones," said an official. He said that Taliban Commander Hafiz Gul Bahadur did not oppose the anti-polio drive, but suspected the US motives behind the campaign.

The official said that the situation had improved after engaging local Taliban in the polio drive, but there were still three pockets in Datakhel that seemed hard to be covered.

Regular curfew in many areas of North Waziristan had almost stalled the polio campaign and now an extended programme was being planned. The authorities have launched a campaign from Tuesday to provide anti-polio drops to about 162,000 children in the area.

Officials said that Bannu-Miramshah and Datakhel-Miramshah roads remained under curfew from Wednesday and health workers could not visit the target areas.

They said that health workers administered drops in some pockets on Thursday and the campaign was likely to last for another day and cover the remaining areas. "Our teams could not visit villages alongside the main roads because of the curfew," said a health official.

The officials said that a total of 140,000 children could not be vaccinated in Orakzai Agency
... crawling with holy men, home to Darra Adam Khel, the world's largest illegal arms bazaar. 14 distinct tribes of beturbanned primitives inhabit Orakzai agency's 1500 or so square kilometers...
because of the militancy. These ill-fated children are living in central and upper tehsils of the tribal agency that have not been cleared from beturbanned goons so far.

Move described as part of slander campaign: Protest lodged with US over Fai`s arrest
[Dawn] Pakistain protested on Thursday against the arrest of Kashmiri-American Council (KAC) director Dr Ghulam Nabi Fai in the US, saying the move could not deprive the Kashmire cause of its legitimacy.

"A demarche was made to the US embassy in Islamabad today to register our concerns," a statement issued by the Foreign Office said.

Jonathan Pratt, Political Counsellor at the US Embassy, received the demarche from Director General (Americas) Dr Sohail Khan.

The government sees Dr Fai's detention as a continuation of a slander campaign against Pakistain and an attempt to malign the Kashmire cause.

Although he had been facing questioning about the KAC's relationship with Pakistain government since 2007, many believe that there was more to the episode because of its timing as the arrest came at a time when US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton
... sometimes described as the Smartest Woman in the World and at other times as Mrs. Bill, never as Another Bainbridge Colby ...
was in India. Besides, it followed an ongoing row between Washington and Islamabad over the arrest of CIA's local agents in Pakistain who may have facilitated the May 2 raid in Abbottabad in which the late Osama bin Laden
... who had a brief but splitting headache...
was killed.

The incident attracted special attention in Islamabad because it came ahead of the July 27 meeting between the foreign ministers of Pakistain and India and was perceived to be an indication of the changing nuances of the US policy on the dispute.

Dr Fai, a US citizen, was placed in durance vile on Tuesday by the US Department of Justice for acting on behalf of the Pakistain government, without registering as a foreign agent, for influencing US government's position on Kashmire.

Co-accused Zaheer Ahmed couldn't be placed in durance vile for being out of the US. He is said to be in Pakistain.

Although the KAC claims to be a non-profit organization working for improving understanding in the US about the struggle of Kashmiris for self-determination, the US government says it is actually run by ISI, Pak spy agency. Washington alleges that the ISI funnelled four million dollars through the group for lobbying with Congressional leaders and key government functionaries.

"Foreign governments who try to influence the United States by using unregistered agents threaten our national security," the FBI said.

The demarche from the Foreign Office praised the KAC and Dr Fai's work for Kashmiris' struggle and said the Kashmire dispute was on the UN agenda and several Security Council resolutions reaffirmed the right of Kashmiris to self-determination.

"Upholding fundamental rights of Kashmiris is the fundamental responsibility of the international community and all conscientious people who value human rights
...which often intentionally defined so widely as to be meaningless...
and values," the Islamabad statement said in what could be interpreted as a response to the allegation of threatening America's national security.
Yes, yes, but your agents still need to register like everyone else.

Jumblat Sucks Up to Hariri
[An Nahar] Progressive Socialist Party leader Walid Wally Jumblat
... Druze politician, head of the Progressive Socialist Party, who's been on every side in Leb at least four times. He'll sell you his friends for a dollar, but family comes higher because of shipping and handling...
has unveiled that he held a telephone conversation with former Premier Saad Hariri
Second son of Rafik Hariri, the Leb PM who was assassinated in 2005. He has was prime minister in his own right from 2009 through early 2011. He was born in Riyadh to an Iraqi mother and graduated from Georgetown University. He managed his father's business interests in Riyadh until his father's liquidation. When his father died he inherited a fortune of some $4.1 billion, which won't do him much good if Hizbullah has him bumped off, too.
thanking him for his latest stance on Jumblat.

The Druze leader told An Nahar daily published Friday that he heard "moving words" from Hariri but refused to give further details.

Jumblat, who returned along with Minister Ghazi Aridi from Moscow on Wednesday night, said that Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov has welcomed Hariri's statements and decision not to close the dialogue door with Hizbullah leader Sayyed Hassan Nasrallah.

Breaking a nearly four-month silence, Hariri told MTV last week that he was ready to meet Nasrallah but in the presence of witnesses.

"I have never been against dialogue. I am ready for dialogue for the interest of Leb. But with complete frankness, if I talk to Sayyed Hassan I want to have witnesses," he said.

"Lavrov advises the Lebanese not to take their country to the lines of tension," the PSP chief told An Nahar. "This behavior does not serve Leb."

Jumblat unveiled that Russian military assistance to Leb has made a major leap forward. "It is even ready to help in the railway sector."

On the local situation and differences between the March 8 and 14 forces, the Druze leader said: "The new political alignment should not prevent contacts between the different parties."

He stressed on the importance of respecting the point of view of others and insisting on dialogue. Hariri and Nasrallah should hold talks because "we are compelled to coexist and no one could abolish the other."

Jumblat backed President Michel Suleiman's invitation for all-party talks at the Baabda palace, saying dialogue should be aimed at agreeing on the defense strategy on condition that arms are not used locally.

He also stressed that Premier Najib Miqati's cabinet should "not adopt reprisal policies" against March 14
Those are the good guys, insofar as Leb has good guys...
officials.

France Demands End to Syrian Army 'Terror' in Homs
[An Nahar] La Belle France on Friday roundly condemned the latest clampdown on Syrian dissidents in the city of Homs where pro-regime gunnies have killed dozens, saying the army should protect rather than "sow terror."

"La Belle France condemns with the most extreme firmness the continued repression carried out by the Syrian authorities which continue, in a headlong rush to nowhere, to daily arrest and kill their own people," foreign ministry front man Bernard Valero told journalists.
It doesn't count until a stiff note is sent on the best stiff note paper.
"La Belle France expresses its deep concern for the (central) city of Homs and its population where repression has killed dozens of civilians. Terror still reigns in Homs, surrounded by the Syrian army."

Activists say pro-regime gunnies have killed at least 22 people in Homs since Monday, including seven mourners at a funeral.

Syria's third-largest city, Homs has spearheaded demonstrations against Assad and his regime since protests erupted on March 15.

Fierce fighting rocked the city at the weekend, with activists reporting more than 30 people killed in festivities among Christians, Sunni Mohammedans and President-for-Life Bashir Pencilneck al-Assad
One of the last of the old-fashioned hereditary iron-fisted fascist dictators. Before going into the family business Pencilneck was an eye doctor...
's minority Alawite community.

The army had already entered the city in May in a bid to stop rallies calling for the fall of the regime.

"The Syrian army must be aware that its first duty is to protect its countrymen and the stability of the country not to sow terror among civilians," Valero said.

"The army and other security forces must know that they will have to account for their actions."

At which point howls will arise from the insulted Iranian-American community, who wish all to know they are absolutely, positively not Arabs -- they are civilized, by golly. Nor do they like being called Persians, which besides being true of only some of them, is apparently as archaic as calling Jews Hebrews or Israelites.
I take it 'Medes' is right out...
