Iran leader urges deeper Muslim monetary links to fight US ‘hegemony’

on Thursday urged Moslem nations to deepen financial and trade cooperation to fight what he described as US economic hegemony, using an Islamic conference in Malaysia as a platform to decry American sanctions against his country.

Rouhani repeated his assertion that the US has used economic sanctions as the "main tools of domineering hegemony and bullying" of other nations.

Rouhani proposed the Kuala Lumpur conference establish a joint fund to finance technological cooperation among Moslem nations, set up a a joint research center in artificial intelligence and cyberspace, and create a Moslem market in digital economy and cryptocurrency.

Rouhani leaves Friday for a two-day visit to Japan.
Divisions in the Muslim world were self-evident as only about 20 countries sent leaders, or delegations to the Kuala Lumpur summit, though all 57 members of the OIC had been invited.
In welcoming remarks, Mahathir said the Kuala Lumpur Summit was meant to understand why Islam, the Muslims and their countries were "in a state of crisis, helpless and unworthy of this great religion."
Mahathir said the summit, which will end on Saturday, should address the world's perceptions of Islam, the rise of Islamophobia, the decline of the Islamic civilisation and reforms in governance needed by Muslim nations.
