#7 Yes "If I couls restabluish the Union without freeing a slave slave I would do oit".

And so waht? In order to abolish slavery the first condition was retsblishing the Union and in order to establish thne Union it had to win the war. Claming the war's gioal was abolishing slavey was the surest way to lose it sincefour crucial states that had remained loyal were salve states, since not everyone in the North was an abolitionnist and not ebery abolitionist was ready to give his life for the cause.

Thus Lincoln was not free to speak his mind. Therestablish the Union even without frteeing a single slave" sentence could bebe hisn true opinion (Note: A restablished Uniin could have ended abolishing slavery under another OPresident) or not. So we don't know what he thought. Nobody can know for sure what another man thinks

What we know is Lincoln's acations and the fact is he had opportunities of restablishing e Union by making concessions on slavery.

One during the tansition phase and the one portrayed in Speilberg's movie and both times he refused to make any concession on slavery

#8 And same thing fopr trade tariffs: the theme irritated the Souuth but nobody in the South saw trade tariffs as a motive for secession or war so it would have been very simple for Lincoln to get his way on tarde tariffs by making concessions on slavery

Lots of urban streets will need renaming, but the Autonomous Zones will be up to the task.

#12 I went to high school in SF back in the 60s, and Lincoln was at best a third-rate high school behind St. Ignatius and Lowell.

So whoever they name it after will have the honor of being remembered by a mediocre and declining high school.
