#2 From the beginning, he just seemed like an idiot who did what someone told him to do. If someone had told him to march up and down the countryside handing out daisies, he'd have done that. The fact that his task involved murdering people didn't seem to bother him at all.
A rare lucid comment from JM. I usually just skip over them as they're intentionally made too hard to read. A pity, really.
