#1 Or am I overreacting, knowing how many illegals are trapped in slavery?

I don't think you are overreacting. They need to go away. They are doing more harm than good.

#2 It's quite clear that hiring illegals is not illegal in this country. That went out with Zoe Baird. (That darned old year of 1993 again).

Quote from Powell from Politico:

“America is going to be a minority nation in one more generation,” Powell said. “Our minorities are not getting educated well enough now. Fifty percent of our minority kids are not finishing high school. We’ve got to invest in education. We should use the DREAM Act as one way to do it. Whether it should be part of the defense bill or not is something the Congress will decide.”

Well, obviously the answer is MORE immigrants that don't finish high school. I'm really despising our "elite" these days. I think Western civilization has no future. They've sold out to the global billionaires who could care less about it.

#8 IIRC, it was Powell who urged Bush I to end the first Gulf War at the 100 hour mark. He was getting squishy because the MSM was babbling about the 'road of death' and 'piling it on' to the retreating Iraqi forces. All of which was small in comparison to what the Allied forces did at Falaise Pocket in Normandy in '44 to the Germans. Just like the forces that weren't destroyed then that turned up later to inflict casualties among Allied forces months later, the Allies of the Iraqi Liberation would face those not destroyed years later. Meanwhile for over a decade the civilian population would suffer under the rule of those who should have been overthrown then and there. He long ago exceeded his Peter Principle level.

How about....illegal alien? Income tax avoider? Drug mule? Reconquista advocate? MS 13 liaison representative? Food stamp consumer? Anchor baby manufacturer? Slavery human trafficing participant? Weapons dealer? Emergency room customer?

You decide! Take your pick.

#10 I'll grant that illegals do essential work in the US. But why is that so? Is it because legals and citizens can't? No, I did lawn and garden (and even roof) work when I was in jr. high. It's because they won't. And why won't they? Because it doesn't pay well enough and the alternatives do not leave them hungry enough. And because fear of lawsuits has blocked kids from being hired (not much fear of lawsuit from an injured illegal when compared with an injured Coddington Farnsworth IV.)

#13 So in effect he's saying that he hired cheap, essentially slave labor, to do his house over paying someone a standard wage.

"They're all over my house, doing things whenever I call for repairs, and I'm sure you've seen them at your house."

You know, I'm pretty sure that the slaveowners of the old south used to say the same thing.

And no, I don't have them at my house.

#18 Illegal aliens helped to build my house. I know they did because when I was pulling tiles from the roof to look for a leak I found a Tijuana newspaper. I also found some of the sloppiest, shoddiest workmanship you could ever see. The developer had no pride and neither did the people he hired.

But, OTOH, you wouldn't want the general to get his own hands dirty working on his own house, would you?

#20 I sent an email to the White House today, with an impassioned plea to deport illegals and close the border. On the form, I selected to receive a response from the WH and their "most transparent ever" administration. * Crickets* If I do receive one, it will be priceless to hear the canned talking points. I plan on hanging it on my fridge as a reminder to work against the corruption in our government.

#21 Wasthat comment really in periwinkle?

Yes. I am quite displeased, ExtremeModerate, and chose language that I thought most efficiently displayed the depth of my displeasure. I try to reserve strong language for really strong feeling, which is why I object to it being wasted as filler in everyday conversation.

#24 Normally, TW uses a scalpel with a flair that would make many surgeons envious. But it seems Colin Powell has wandered far enough out into the weeds that she feels a baseball bat is more appropriate. Poor old guy is rapidly approaching jimmuh carter status.

#25 I don't understand the "pi$$ed-off alert" color system. Periwinkle indicates a moderator comment? It seems this is TW's comment. TW you are always usually so unruffled. There are times when strong language serves a useful purpose in communication--there is very little misunderstanding about it. Somehow, I have even more respect for you. We don't have much honesty in the usual public forums. It is refreshing.

#26 Periwinkle is my colour when I'm moderating, JohnQC. Mostly it's for in-lines, to differentiate my in-line comments from the person who submitted the article, which are highlighted in bright yellow. But also if I say something in the comment thread as a moderator,
when it would look like this.
There's a list in the right column of the front page called Meet the Mods; In no particular order... that lists who is what colour. It has nothing specifically to do with me being annoyed, as such.

I hope that helps. :-)

#29 Gen Powell says there should be a path to citizenship for illegals.
There is:
1) Move back to Mexico
2) Apply for a visa
3) Wait for years (or decades) to have it approved
4) Move back to the US legally
5) Wait the required number of years (5, I think)
6) Pass the standard citizenship test
7) Take the oath.

You notice that this takes many years. Too bad. Anyone who came here legally had to go through the same sort of process. Just because people are from Mexico, and came across the border illegally does not give them any special rights. They do not have the right to jump to the head of the line just because they have managed to escape deportation for years.

#30 Poor old guy is rapidly approaching jimmuh carter status.

One can only hope the ex-general also is starting to show the signs of senility, Ebbang Uluque6305. Otherwise such deliberate breaking the laws of the nation he is still sworn to serve... as you say (and thank you for the very graceful compliment!), a verbal scalpel simply would not serve.

I did, that's what I said! ;-)

Thank you for that note of levity, dear Secret Asian Man, so much needed after the shock of this article. I expect honour from all our men and women in uniform, you see, and have rarely been disappointed. I expect even more from senior officers, who answer not only for their own actions but also for the example they set for those who look to them for leadership; a man like ex-general Powell held in his hands not only his own honour, but the lives and honour of those who reported to him, all the way down to the lowliest private lining up to start basic training. This behaviour creates distrust, driping poison into the bloodstream of our military.

Perhaps I should have used different words -- by all accounts ex-general Powell's mother was the kind of lady we all can aspire to being, but I lack the proper vocabulary.

Um no. You sentiments were echoed throughout America today. By the way, the cheap Bastige backtracked somewhat. Grrrr. So you can include liar as well to his list of accomplishments.

Today:

“I don’t hire illegal immigrants,” he said in the clarifying statement. “On Meet the Press yesterday, I referred to illegal immigrants working around my house. I was referring to the many service contractors who work in my neighborhood, using mostly immigrant workers, who do good work. Some may well be “illegal.”

#32 he said in the clarifying statement.

The original comment sounded like he assumed that non-native service workers were indeed illegal, and that he approved. The clarifying statement merely adds that he did not directly hire illegals, but that he felt no need to confirm his assumption that those funny-speaking men wandering through his house probably didn't have legitimate green cards. It's odd, because I suspect the ex-general's parents came legally from Jamaica.

Yep, General Powell is of Jamaican and Scottish ancestry and grew up in Harlem. In his (auto)biography he certainly chocked several chapters on his humble upbringing, lest you forget, dear reader, that he is not from privilege. Unfortunately, I admit I've read this book cover to cover, which makes his deriliction even more disapointing. Lamer still is that he's gone soft, he should know better than to aid and abet lower wages that illegals are paid.
Posted by Private Eye 2010-09-20 21:12||   2010-09-20 21:12|| Front Page Top

#35 Powell would never hire an illegal worker, no, how could you ever think that. He has contractors to handle those details and provide plausible deniability, as usual for men in his position.

Illegals aren't legally illegal, anyway. Nothing will get done in this country unless we make them illegally legal. But they have to have legal SS numbers so we can pay them their retirement. Well, hm, so they can pay me my retirement. Hey, what's wrong with illegals?
