#2 Lots of people have bases down in Antarctica. Beyond pride, and realizing that it is freaking cold there (and clandestine attempts to locate oil and such) what scientific value do these bases really have?

#8 If you wanted to regularly monitor (or interact with) things in polar orbits, well then you would need a radar (or something) located in some sort of polar region. But, I'm sure this base is really more about the scientific and treaty benefits.
