Pompeo Does the Right Thing; Stands By Trump
[Victory Girls] With Gen. Mattis resigning and most politicians running from the announcement to pull out of Syria (and rumors of Afghanistan as well), things are looking pretty lonely up in D.C. for President Trump. Except for Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, who is publically supporting the Syria withdrawal. The acts of both Mattis and Pompeo should be applauded.

Mad Dog Mattis is an every-man, and a well-liked, well-respected Marine. He’s humble but he has a back bone. Instinctively we all know he would never ask his troops to do something he was not willing to do himself. This is what makes him an inspiring leader. He’s been at it a long time, and he has certain ideas about national security.

Some have called his resignation letter blunt, and a complete repudiation of "Trumpism" but those critics have missed the boat. While the letter is plain spoken, there is little to detract from his classy exit. Too bad more officials are not as straightforward. He clearly laid out that he has different ideas about how to proceed on foreign policy than Trump, and therefore he must depart.

Mattis is right, Trump does deserve someone who will align with his goals, and then dutifully serve to carry out his intentions. Mattis judged he could not do that, so in the honorable way we have come to expect from him, he stepped down. He did not stay in the job seething or undermining the president, or leaking sensitive documents to make Trump look bad. And I am praying he doesn’t decide to go on a sleazy Trump-bashing book tour like so many others.

Of course, the media is trying to squeeze as much rancor out of the situation as possible, but the relationship between Mattis and Trump IS a grownup one. They hashed it out, came to an impasse, and Mattis did the right thing ‐ for his own conscience. Trump respects him and honored him with a snark-free laudatory tweet. Trump doesn’t need "yes men." He needs people to treat him fairly, and when that happens he returns the favor.

German Foreign Ministry Slams Paleo Mission For Support OF PFLP Terror
[JP] n a highly unusual rebuke of the Palestinian Mission in Berlin on Tuesday, Germany's foreign ministry blasted the Mission for glorifying terrorism.

The Palestinian Mission posted on its Facebook page an illustration of convicted Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine (PFLP) terrorist Leila Khaled, with the statement: "Resistance is not terrorism."

"We have made it clear to the Palestinian Mission that we need clarification on the Facebook post, and the glorification of terrorism and a glorification of Lufthansa kidnapper Leila Khaled are completely unacceptable," a spokesperson for the ministry wrote to The Jerusalem Post.

The mission eventually deleted the pro-PFLP Facebook post.

A Post press query to the Palestinian Mission in Berlin was not immediately returned.

Bild reporter Filipp Piatov first broke the story on Monday about the Palestinian Mission in Berlin promoting Khaled from the PFLP terrorist organization.

Economy
China cuts tariffs on 700 more items
[American Thinker] In its third round of tariff cuts this year, China announced that 700 more goods will have tariffs cut. Bloomberg reports:
China announced another round of tariff cuts, lowering import taxes on more than 700 goods from Jan. 1 as part of its efforts to open up the economy and lower costs for domestic consumers.
No doubt, that’s what they say. And it is true that domestic consumers will benefit from lower cost access to foreign goods. But, is President Trump’s pressure on China not a factor? I am sorry, but I can’t accept the notion that Trump is irrelevant to the decision.

Note that the rate cuts are temporary and can be changed at any time. To me, this is further evidence that they are a bargaining chip in the confrontation over trade that President Trump started.

The underlying reality – that President Trump recognized unlike his predecessors – is that because of its trade surplus, China has far more to lose than the US from a trade war. The comparatively simple reality should have fortified the US in taking a harder line toward China, and yet it never did until Trump. Instead, the US has allowed itself to de-industrialize on a massive scale.

There’s a new sheriff in town the last 2 years. A lot of people were doing very well under the old sheriffs, even though America as a whole did not.

Something to think about over the next 2 years.

Miami Man Arrested for Posting Bomb-Making Instructions Online Sympathized with ISIS
[PJ] A Miami-area man was arrested last week and charged with distributing materials online showing how to build explosive weapons.

Tayyab Tahir Ismail (33), a naturalized U.S. citizen born in Pakistan, is facing multiple charges with a maximum sentence of 20 years on each count.

According to a Justice Department press release and an FBI affidavit filed in the case, Ismail posted bomb-making instructions on a mobile messaging application on at least five occasions from July through September of this year. The documents and videos included step-by-step details of building explosive devices that he intended to be used in terrorist activities.

Ismail has a bail hearing on December 26, and a pretrial hearing on January 2.

One video he posted shows a masked figure wearing military fatigues demonstrating how to build a suicide vest. Another video showing how to make a bomb in the kitchen displays an ISIS flag hanging in the background. The FBI said that the instructions posted by Ismail would, in fact, enable operating devices to be built.
The resulting device guaranteed to blow up in the bombmaker’s hands as the final step is completed, but Mr. Ismail wasn’t to know that particular detail.

The Grand Turk
Turkey demands Google remove Greater Kurdistan map
[Rudaw] Ottoman Turkish authorities have asked Google to remove a map of Greater Kurdistan that includes southeastern provinces of The Sick Man of Europe Turkey
...Qatar's colony in Asia Minor....
"The Information Technology and Communications Body (BTK) has met with the platform [Google]’s relevant representatives for the immediate removal of the mentioned map as part of their obligations in terms of national and international legislation," Ottoman Turkish Transport and Infrastructure Minister Cahit Turan confirmed in answer to a written question from a deputy from the newly-founded nationalist IYI Party.

Greater Kurdistan refers to lands inhabited by Kurds and encompasses territories in four countries: southeastern Turkey (Northern Kurdistan), northern Iraq (Southern Kurdistan or the Kurdistan Region), northwestern Iran (Eastern Kurdistan), and northern Syria (Rojava or Western Kurdistan).

The map in question appears to be one created by a user on Google’s My Maps service, not the company itself.

Yavuz Agiralioglu, the deputy who posed the question, had asked the minister whether a platform like Google, "which has offices in Turkey, should not account for our national borders which we have given hundred thousands of deaders for... while our brave soldiers in Syria and Iraq are fighting terrorist organizations like the PKK and PYD?"

The Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK) and Democratic Union Party (PYD) are both named terror organizations in Turkey. The PKK operates in Turkey and has its headquarters in the Kurdistan Region. The PYD is based in Rojava, but Ankara alleges it is a branch of the PKK.

The map has so far been seen by more than 1.7 million users around the world.

"These maps and their likes which serve propaganda for holy warriors shall be removed," said Agiralioglu.

Rudaw English approached BTK, but they were not available to comment.

Responding to the IYI member, Turan said they are following up on the matter.

In July 2017, the Ottoman Turkish parliament adopted new guidelines that banned use of the terms "Kurdistan," "Kurdish regions," and "Armenian genocide."

In late 2017, Osman Baydemir, a prominent Kurdish politician, was suspended for using the word "Kurdistan" in a parliament session.

After using the word, he was asked by the speaker of parliament where Kurdistan is located.

"It is here," he replied, clapping his hand on his heart.

There are an estimated 35 to 40 million Kurds spread across Greater Kurdistan. They began their struggle for a Kurdish state more than a century ago, and it continues today.

While there is no ’Kurdistan’ state today, it has existed on maps for centuries.

Iraq
ISIS attack village, kidnap three near Tuz Khurmatu
[Rudaw] ISIS bully boyz attacked a village in Tuz Khurmatu on Monday night, kidnapping three people, according to a local official.

"This evening, a number of ISIS bully boyz attacked the village of Parapara, kidnapping three villagers," Shkur Mala Karim, in charge of the PUK office in Tuz Khurmatu, told Rudaw.

One of the people was able to escape the kidnappers, "But the other two were taken by them and are still missing," he added.

He claimed that the ISIS attackers had come from Albu Najim village.

A family member of one of the missing people told Rudaw that the bully boyz had attacked the village claiming they were members of Hashd al-Shaabi militias.

The attackers gathered all the villagers together by force before picking out the three young men they kidnapped.

Tuz Khurmatu is located within the disputed areas where security gaps between Iraqi and Peshmerga forces have allowed ISIS bully boyz to operate. Two days ago, a shepherd was bumped off by unidentified persons.

The region has a mixed population of Kurds, Arabs, and Turkmen and had a history of sectarian festivities that were exacerbated when Iraqi federal forces and the Hashd al-Shaabi militias took control of the city in October last year.

Painfully Dumb Bint – Occasional Cortex- Says Baby Jesus and his parents were refugees

Bangladesh
AL: BNP, Jamaat, Oikya Front working against army under ISI prescription
[Dhaka Tribune] BNP, Jamaat-e-Islami
...The Islamic Society, founded in 1941 in Lahore by Maulana Sayyid Abul Ala Maududi, aka The Great Apostosizer. The Jamaat opposed the independence of Bangladesh but has operated an independent branch there since 1975. It maintains close ties with international Mohammedan groups such as the Moslem Brotherhood. the Taliban, and al-Qaeda. The Jamaat's objectives are the establishment of a pure Islamic state, governed by Sharia law. It is distinguished by its xenophobia, and its opposition to Westernization, capitalism, socialism, secularism, and liberalist social mores...
, and Jatiya Oikya Front are spreading propaganda against the army based on the "prescription" provided by Pak intelligence agency ISI, Awami League Joint General Secretary Abdur Rahman has claimed.

He made the accusations at a presser held at the party president's Dhanmondi political office in Dhaka on Tuesday afternoon.

"The lies and deception spread by BNP, Jamaat, and Oikya Front have become profound," he said. "But acting on ISI's prescription, they have now targeted their twisted propaganda towards our symbol of pride and esteem‐our army."

Commenting on Gonoshasthaya Kendra founder and Oikya Front leader Dr Zafrullah Chowdhury's remarks against incumbent army Chief of Staff Abdul Aziz on a TV talk show on October 9, Abdur Rahman said: "Everyone saw how Zafrullah made ill-motivated and false statements against the Bangladesh Army, and its chief, to tarnish the army's image.

"Now these parties are opening fake Facebook IDs and websites in the army's name and trying to confuse the public," he said.

Abdur Rahman also said conspiracies against the army are nothing new for BNP-Jamaat. "After ascending to power with a false coup, BNP Founder Ziaur Rahman killed thousands of innocent army officials and freedom fighters through the so-called tribunal."

BNP and Jamaat have always worked to implicate the army in controversies, he said at the presser.

He added: "Yesterday [Monday], Jatiya Oikya Front chief Dr Kamal Hossain mentioned Yahya Khan's‐the man responsible for 1971's genocide‐name at a presser. If Kamal Hossain stands in front of a mirror, he will only see Yahya's reflection."

The joint general secretary accused Dr Kamal Hossain of harbouring anti-liberation war sentiments. "He has started adopting a Pak mentality."

Accusing BNP, Jamaat, and Oikya Front leaders of causing violence and disruption in different parts of the country before the December 30 polls, Abdur said: "BNP, Jamaat, and Oikya Front are using their own people to vandalize the election offices of Awami League and their allied parties, to sabotage their campaign activities."

Europe
Cyprus Picks Up 19 Migrants Smuggled to Shore
[AnNahar] Cypriot authorities on Tuesday picked up 19 migrants colonists on the island's western tip who had been dropped off by suspect people smugglers, state-funded Cyprus News Agency reported.

It is believed the migrants colonists arrived by boat in the Akamas region on Monday night before being spotted by police, CNA said.

The suspected traffickers got away on a speedboat despite Cypriot marine police pursuing and trying to intercept it, the agency reported.

The origin of the migrants colonists, 14 men, two women and three children, was not immediately disclosed. They were taken to a reception center in the capital Nicosia.

Over the past 12 months there has been a steady flow of Syrian migrants colonists arriving in Cyprus from The Sick Man of Europe Turkey
...the only place on the face of the earth that misses the Ottoman Empire....
and Leb.

Cyprus has warned Brussels it faces growing pressure from increasing irregular migration.

EU data earlier this year showed it had received more asylum applications per capita than any of the bloc's other 28 nations.

Cyprus said it has received over 4,000 asylum requests in the first eight months of 2018 -- 55 percent more than in the same period last year.

But despite lying just 160 kilometers (100 miles) from the coast of war-torn Syria, Cyprus has not seen the massive inflow of migrants colonists experienced by Turkey and Greece.

Britain
40 migrants rescued from boats in English Channel
[DW] Forty migrants colonists have been rescued from five boats in the English Channel. The Christmas Day rescues come amid a spike in migrant boats trying to cross the treacherous seas.

British and French maritime authorities intercepted 40 migrants colonists trying to cross the English Channel on Tuesday.

The British Home Office, which oversees immigration, said the migrants colonists were from Iraq, Iran and Afghanistan.

French maritime authorities said a rubber dinghy with a failed engine was rescued with eight migrants colonists onboard, including two children. They were transferred to British authorities.

British authorities responded to the other four incidents.

The migrants colonists received a health check and were transferred for immigration processing.
Why? I thought the rule was that those caught coming from another EU country were automatically sent back.
The children went under the protection of UK social services.
The Daily Mail adds:
More than 150 people have been plucked from Channel in two months. Most of those held by police crossing the world's busiest shipping lane from La Belle France since November have claimed to be Iranian.

It emerged last month that people smugglers are charging migrants colonists up to £13,000 each to cross the Channel by inflatable dinghy.

One family of would-be asylum seekers was charged £40,000 for the dangerous night-time sea crossing.

So-called 'agents' have already charged families to reach the French coast. Many fly from Iran to countries such as Serbia or The Sick Man of Europe Turkey
...the decaying remnant of the Ottoman Empire....
, before being smuggled across borders to make overland journeys across Europe.

People traffickers then demand a further fee to get them to British soil. Individuals pay as much as £13,300 a head (15,000 euros) to board rubber dinghies for the freezing night journey.
It seems to me these are not prices the poor can afford...

Turkey resolute in fighting terror, needs no permission from Israel: Ankara
[PRESSTV] The Sick Man of Europe Turkey
...the decaying remnant of the Ottoman Empire....
says it is determined to continue its "fight" against terrorism, stressing that Ankara does not need any "permission" from the Israeli regime to fight terror.

"It is out of the question for Turkey to get permission or consent from Israel" to fight against terrorism, Turkey's English-language Hurriyet Daily News newspaper on Tuesday quoted Ottoman Turkish Presidential front man Ibrahim Kalin as telling news hounds the day before.

He said Ankara would equally need no permission from any "country" in the world to carry out its anti-terror operations.

Kalin’s comments came after Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, in a Twitter post on Sunday, attacked Ottoman Turkish President Sultan Recep Tayyip Erdogan the First

Iraq
ISIS terrorists kidnap 20 people in Kirkuk
[ALMASDARNEWS] Around 20 people living south of the Iraqi city of Kirkuk were kidnapped by bully boyz of the ISIS* terrorist organization, NRT broadcaster reported on Tuesday.

Militants attacked a village in the Rashad district, located south-west of Kirkuk,
... a thick stew of Arabs, Turkmen, Kurds, and probably Antarcticans, all of them mutually hostile most of the time...
taking 14 locals hostage, Kurdish TV channel NRT reported, adding that the fate of the captives remained unknown.

According to the outlet, bully boyz captured six more people in other villages south of Kirkuk, however one person managed to escape. Residents of several nearby villages reportedly decided to evacuate.

This comes after declaration by the Iraqi Prime Minister Haider Abadi in December 2017 of the end of the country’s fight against the ISIS after the Iraqi troops re-established complete control over its border with Syria. After that, the Kirkuk province governor told Sputnik in February about so-called ISIS "sleeper cells" in the area.

The province of Kirkuk was under full control of Syrian Kurds, but after the Kurds held an independence referendum in September 2017, the Iraqi government launched an offensive and soon regained control over the region.

The Defense Ministry committee responsible for authorizing settlement construction on Tuesday advanced plans for roughly 1,300 homes in the West Bank, with some 400 more slated for approval in an additional session scheduled for Wednesday.

Of the 1,289 homes green-lighted by the Civil Administration’s High Planning Subcommittee in 23 different projects, 744 gained final approval for construction while 545 homes had their plans cleared ahead of being considered for a final okay.

On Wednesday, 418 homes are slated to be okayed by the High Planning Subcommittee, with 294 gaining final approval for construction and 192 clearing the earlier planning stage.

Israel fires at Syrian missile after bombing of arms depots near Damascus
A clever little map and brief videos can be seen at the link.
[Jpost] According to media reports, the launch was carried out from the northern city of Hadera, with pictures published on social media of a large tail of smoke heading into the sky.

Israel’s air defense system - likely the Arrow - was activated late Tuesday night against a Syrian anti-aircraft missile, following an alleged Israeli air strike over the capital of Damascus. Media reports claimed that Israel struck weapon warehouses near the Syrian capital.

There were no damages or injuries to Israeli troops, the IDF Spokesperson said in a statement.

Solar Panel Waste: A Disposal Problem
[IOTWREPORT] The last few years have seen growing concern over what happens to solar panels at the end of their life. Consider the following statements:

‐ The problem of solar panel disposal will explode with full force in two or three decades and wreck the environment because it is a huge amount of waste which is not easy to recycle.

‐ Solar panels create 300 times more toxic waste per unit of energy than do nuclear power plants. If solar and nuclear produce the same amount of electricity over the next 25 years that nuclear produced in 2016, and the wastes are stacked on football fields, the nuclear waste would reach the height of the Leaning Tower of Pisa (53 meters), while the solar waste would reach the height of two Mt. Everests (16 km).

‐ Contrary to previous assumptions, pollutants such as lead or carcinogenic cadmium can be almost completely washed out of the fragments of solar modules over a period of several months by rain water.

‐ In countries like China, India, and Ghana, people living near e-waste dumps often burn the waste in order to salvage the valuable copper wires for resale. Since this process requires burning off plastic, the resulting smoke contains toxic fumes that are carcinogenic and teratogenic (birth-defect causing) when inhaled.

Solar photovoltaic panels, whose operating life is 20 to 30 years, lose productivity over time. The International Renewable Energy Agency estimated that there were about 250,000 metric tons of solar panel waste in the world at the end of 2016 and that this figure would definitely increase. Solar panels contain lead, cadmium, and other toxic chemicals that cannot be removed without breaking apart the entire panel.

In November 2016, Japan’s Environment Ministry issued a warning that the amount of solar panel waste Japan produces each year is likely to increase from 10,000 to 800,000 tons by 2040, and the country has no plan for safely disposing of it.

A recent report found that it would take 19 years for Toshiba Environmental Solutions to finish recycling all of the solar waste Japan produced by 2020. By 2034, the annual waste production will be 70 to 80 time larger than that of 2020.

#4  To understand this properly, we need to compare the disposal problems inherent in solar panels to similar problems involved with disposal of wornout computers, TV sets, smartphones & all modern electronic claptrap. Also include what happens during the manufacturing processes of this stuff.

#6  All forms of energy production have pros and cons. Solar in use is nice and clean. The manufacturing and disposal not as much. Nuclear has the issue of fuel rods and the general low level waste. Hydro has its own issues. About the cleanest over all is probably some sort of solar termal. Using mirrors to heat a working fluid to run a steam turbine. Iraq
Iraqi Christians celebrate hopeful Christmas after defeat of ISIS
[Jpost] Across the region, Christmas appeared to come and go without the terrorism of previous years.

Christians filled churches in the city of Qaraqosh, southeast of djinn-infested Mosul
... the home of a particularly ferocious and hairy djinn...
, on Christmas eve to celebrate the holiday for the second year after their community was liberated from ISIS. At the Grand Immaculate Church, the hall was packed with worshipers and priests conducted prayers. It was one of many Christian communities in Iraq and throughout the Middle East celebrating the holiday with hope that the wave of hard boy anti-Christian violence had subsided.

Iraq’s Christian community has faced difficulties in recent years, with waves of Islamist hard boy terror and kidnappings, especially after 2003. Many emigrated. When ISIS attacked in 2014, the Christian towns of Nineveh were destroyed and their residents forced to flee to the Kurdish autonomous region, where many then decided to search for a life elsewhere. However,
there's no worse danger than telling a mother her baby is ugly...
a glimmer of hope appeared in October 2016 when ISIS was driven out of Nineveh plains and Christian cities like Qaraqosh, once home to some 50,000 people, and smaller towns nearby, were retaken. Last year, some Christians returned to Qaraqosh to conduct holiday services. Qaraqosh is an important symbol because it was the largest Christian majority urban area in Iraq. In other cities, such as Baghdad, Christians are a small minority, but Qaraqosh is a bellwether for the possibility that Christian communities in Iraq can rebuild and thrive.

This year, the Fraternite en Irak, an association that helps religious minorities who suffered violence in Iraq, and which has helped rebuild Christian sites, celebrated in Qaraqosh. Santa Claus drove down the streets at night. "Thanks to your donations, we have been able to restore 300 apartments, hundreds of people have returned," the organization said.

At Mar Yohanna Church, the bells rang out for the holiday. Qaraqosh suffered terribly under ISIS control. Homes were looted and burned. ISIS tore down the crosses and steeples of the churches. It sprayed graffiti and even transformed one of the church compounds into a bomb-making factory, evidence of which I saw in March 2017 during a visit. ISIS beheaded images of the Virgin Mary and even beheaded statues of horses commemorating St. George.

In Ainkawa, three mostly Christian suburb of Erbil in the Kurdish region, Syriac Catholics filled a more modern church and sang and celebrated. In Mosul, few Christians have returned after ISIS. One priest said that challenges, such as reconstructing churches, is just one part of the problem. Christians don’t feel secure and are concerned about instability. The blog Mosul Eye, which documented Mosul under ISIS occupation and after liberation, posted hope for peace and freedom on Christians. Ali Y. al-Baroodi, a local photographer and academic, posted a message of "merry Christmas from Mosul."

In Baghdad, there is hope that the tragedies of Iraq’s recent past are behind the country.

"In this town life always conquers death," wrote one woman on Twitter. A giant Christmas tree was erected in Baghdad in an amusement park. Police held a Christmas party. Santa was on display in some stores. In an article on the website Middle East Eye, a nun was quoted saying Christians in Baghdad had not suffered threats recently and the situation was stable a year after the Iraqi government declared ISIS defeated.

Across the region, Christmas appeared to come and go without the terrorism of previous years.

Iraq makes Christmas Day an official nationwide holiday to mark 'the occasion of the birth of Jesus Christ'

  • The Iraqi cabinet has approved an amendment to the national holidays law

  • It makes December 25 a public holiday for everyone, not just Christians as before

Canadian imam: Saying ‘Merry Christmas’ is worse than murder
[IsraelTimes] Younus Kathrada tells youths in British Columbia they should be offended by tenets of Christianity, with which there is ’enmity,’ adds: ’I’m not saying go out and just kill them’.

A Canadia holy man has said Moslems who congratulate Christians for the Christmas holiday are committing crimes worse than adultery and murder.

During a sermon at the Moslem Youth of Victoria in British Columbia, Sheikh Younus Kathrada said he viewed with "great sadness" his fellow Moslems’ casual treatment of the "false holiday."

And he asserted that Moslems "must be offended" by Christians’ beliefs, in a video of his sermon provided by the Middle East Media Research Institute.

"There are those who will say to them "Merry Christmas." What are you congratulating them on?" he asked. "Congratulations on the birth of your Lord? Is that acceptable to a Moslem? Are you now approving of their beliefs? By saying that you are approving of it."

He then claimed that "If a person were to commit every major sin ‐ committing adultery, dealing with interest, lying, murder... If a person were to do all of those major sins, they are nothing compared to the sin of congratulating and greeting the non-Moslems on their false festivals."

Kathrada was quick to note that he did not mean Moslems should "treat the non-Moslems in a bad way or that we deal with them unjustly.

"I’m not saying, and I’ve never said, go out and just kill them, and do this to them... No! Because Allah tells us not to allow the enmity that may exist between you and a people to cause you to be unjust towards them. Rather, be just."

Well, as long as he’s being reasonable about it.

Gunmen attack Libya’s Foreign Ministry
[Libya Observer] At least three people were killed and more than twenty others maimed in an armed attack on the Libyan Foreign Ministry in Tripoli
...a confusing city, one end of which is located in Lebanon and the other end of which is the capital of Libya. Its chief distinction is being mentioned in the Marine Hymn...
on Tuesday.

Sources said three attackers stormed the building of the ministry in Zawit Dahmai district in the early hours of working time.

Eyewitnesses working near the ministry told The Libya Observer that sounds of sporadic gunshots were heard inside the ministry at around 10:00 am. Later a loud kaboom was heard and smoke started to billow from the building.

Security sources said two of the attackers blew themselves up in the ministry while the third one was killed in an exchange of fire with security forces who cordoned off the area.

The spokesperson of newly-formed Tripoli Protection Force Abdul-Rahman Mizighwi and Director of the Islamic Affairs Department of the Foreign Ministry Ibrahim al-Shaieb were among the dead, the sources confirmed.

Radisson Blu Hotel, which is located a few meters away from the ministry, was evacuated for security fears.

The identity of the attackers is yet to be determined.

This is the third attack on state institutions in Tripoli this year. In May, a suicide kaboom struck the High National Elections Commission in Ghoat Shaal district. Four months later, ISIS-linked button men attacked the National Oil Corporation (NOC) on September 10.

Taliban Behind Kabul Attack: Abdullah
[Tolo News] A day after a group of button men stormed two government buildings in Kabul in which 43 people were killed, the Chief Executive of Afghanistan, Abdullah Abdullah
... the former foreign minister of the Northern Alliance government, advisor to Masood, and candidate for president against Karzai. Dr. Abdullah was born in Kabul and is half Tadjik and half Pashtun...
, said he sees Taliban
...the Pashtun equivalent of men...
and their supporters behind the attack.

The target of the attack was the Public Works Ministry and the National Authority on Disabled and Heirs of Martyrs’ Affairs in Kabul’s PD16.

"I condemn this crime," Abdullah said at an event in Kabul on Tuesday. "The enemies of Afghanistan once again committed a crime against the innocent people of the country. Whoever takes the responsibility of this act, the main perpetrator of this incident is the Taliban."

He described Taliban as is a group which has disrupted Afghanistan’s security with "cruelty" and a group which is taking the lives of civilians and has many times taken responsibility for "such heinous acts".

Abdullah said Taliban is a group which does not have "the courage" of face-to-face talks but it has "the cruelty" of conducting terror acts.

He also said that "any country which has given sanctuary to the Taliban and is giving safe haven to the group and are supporting them, are behind the attack".

Syrian Kurds slam US withdrawal
[PRESSTV] Many Syrian Kurds have expressed frustration over the United States' planned troop withdrawal from Syria, describing it as a 'stab in the back' and considering new allies, according to the US-based National Public Radio (NPR).

Syrian Kurdish forces in northern Syria are considering contingency plans and partnering with new alliances in the face of an anticipated Ottoman Turkish incursion in the region, the NPR said on Monday.

"At this point, we are open to all options and partnerships," said Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) front man Mustafa Bali.

The report further revealed that the Syrian Kurdish officials are even considering "on-the-ground protection deals with Iranian forces in Syria," in addition to Syrian government protection.

"The Syrian regime should be protecting Syria's sovereign borders," says Bali, adding that "on principle, we would not be against it (Syrian government presence)."

Investigators are trying to ascertain if the propaganda objects were linked to the damage caused to the overhead contact wire. They are also examining if the perpetrators had any political motives.

"Since the beginning of the investigation, several pieces of evidence have been secured," police said, adding that Sherlocks found a torn steel cable and the damaged overhead contact wire at the train track on Sunday.

Germany's train operator informed the police of the damage. The incident caused a temporary disruption in local train services in the German capital.

It remains unclear if there is any connection between the incident in Berlin and a similar case on a railway line between the southern German cities of Nuremberg and Munich where unknown suspects tried to damage or even derail a high-speed train with a steel cable in October.

Egyptian cartoon urges Muslims to extend Christmas greetings
Video with English subtitles can be seen at the link.
[IsraelTimes] Video by country’s Fatwa Institute encourages interfaith dialogue and even an exchange of gifts in honor of Christian holiday, warns to avoid Islamic fanatics.

A video made by the Egyptian Fatwa Institute and uploaded to YouTube earlier this month encourages Moslems to extend holiday greetings to Christians and to maintain friendly relations with those around them, regardless of their religion.

"Congratulating non-Moslems during their holidays is encouraged by Islam, and is in keeping with the noble manners introduced by the Prophet Muhammad," the narrator says, in a translation provided by the Middle East Media Research Institute.

"Islam has acknowledged the principle of peaceful coexistence with all people, regardless of their faith. Moreover, Islam has instructed [Moslems] to befriend them, maintain contact with them, to give them presents, to accept presents from them, and to treat them with decency, like they were treated by our Prophet Muhammad," she adds.

She warns viewers not to "fall prey to the bandidos forces of Evil and the fanatics, who take from the religion only that which suits their whims. Whenever someone disputes with their narrow ways, they take the easiest path and accuse him of heresy."

According to its website the Fatwa Institute is a "premier institute to represent Islam and the international flagship for Islamic legal research." Its mission statement is to keep "contemporary Moslem in touch with religious principles, clarifying the right way, removing doubts concerning religious and worldly life, and revealing religious laws for new issues of contemporary life."

In 2018, Germany quit being global climate leader
[DW] Scientists issued urgent warnings about climate change in 2018. Germany's summertime temperatures hit record highs. Nevertheless, the government has lost its enthusiasm for tackling climate issues, Jens Thurau writes.

The government has finally acknowledged that its stated goal of reducing greenhouse gas emissions by 40 percent by 2020 is not even remotely achievable.

German Environment Minister Svenja Schulze, a Social Democrat, performed a bizarre balancing act at the World Climate Summit in Poland earlier this month. Like the leaders of developing countries, small island nations and other states committed to tackling climate change, she called for more to be done to address the problem ‐ however, she rejected demands for a swift end to reliance on coal. Jennifer Morgan, the executive director of Greenpeace International, told Schulze on stage in Katowice that Germany's climate policy had become a joke. Schulze did not respond. However,
man does not live by words alone, despite the fact that sometimes he has to eat them...
back in Germany, Economic Affairs and Energy Minister Peter Altmaier, of the Christian Democrats (CDU), announced on television that Schulze's message of solidarity with impoverished island countries had not been agreed in advance, and so did not represent the position of Germany's grand coalition government as a whole.

[AnNahar] A British-Iranian scientist detained in Tehran in April for his alleged role in an "infiltration network" has returned to London, the Foreign Office said Tuesday.

"We can confirm that a British-Iranian dual national who was detained in Tehran has returned to the UK," the Foreign Office said in a statement, when asked about Abbas Edalat.

Edalat, a professor of computer science and mathematics at Imperial College London, was placed in durance vile
Drop the heater, Studs, or you're hist'try!
by Iran's Revolutionary Guards, which raided his home and confiscated his computer, according to the New York-based Center for Human Rights in Iran.

The Campaign Against Sanctions and Military Intervention in Iran (CASMII) charity that Edalat founded said he returned to Britannia last week.

Edalat's arrest and jailing was "a case of misinformation and misunderstanding by the Iranian security apparatus," CASMII said on its website.

The Foreign Office did not disclose details of the academic's release.

British-Iranian charity worker Nazanin Zaghari-Ratcliffe was arrested in Tehran in April 2016 and is serving a five-year jail sentence for sedition -- a charge she has denied.

"We continue to take action on all our consular cases in Iran in line with what we believe will produce the best outcomes in their cases," the Foreign Office said.

declared victory over the bad boy group and said he would withdraw U.S. troops from the war-torn country.

The coalition said its attacks during the week of Dec. 16-22, including air strikes and "coordinated fires," had destroyed logistics facilities and staging areas used by IS, damaged the group’s ability to finance its activities and "removed several hundred ISIS fighters from the battlefield."

"ISIS presents a very real threat to the long-term stability in this region and our mission remains the same, the enduring defeat of ISIS," said UK Major General Christopher Ghika, the deputy commander of the coalition.null

Nigerian army says 14 personnel killed in Boko Haram ambush
[Al Jazeera] Nigeria's military has said 14 military and police personnel have been killed in an ambush by armed Boko Haram

group.

An army statement said on Tuesday that the security forces were on escort duty when they were attacked on Monday just outside Damaturu town in Yobe state in the north of the country.

The statement signed by army front man Colonel Onyema Nwachukwu said efforts to pursue and "eliminate" the Boko Haram group are ongoing.

Since the group launched its campaign in 2009, Boko Haram has killed more than 20,000 people and forced two million others to flee their homes in northeast Nigeria
... a particularly crimson stretch of Islam's bloody border...
Nigeria's military has been fighting the group since then and despite the government's insistence that it is near defeat, northern Nigeria is still beleaguered by heavy fighting.

Over the years, Boko Haram, which wants to form a breakaway state, has kidnapped thousands of adults and children.

The Boko Haram continued threat is a major issue for President Muhammadu Buhari as he seeks a second term in the upcoming election in February.

After a recent series of deadly attacks on Nigeria's military, Buhari and other officials have warned that the group has begun using drones as part of a resurgence.

US sanctions target Iran’s people, Islamic establishment: President Rouhani
[PRESSTV] President Hassan Rouhani says the US sanctions are meant to bring Iran’s Islamic establishment to its knees by exerting pressure on the nation, because Washington sees a powerful Iran as an obstacle to its policies in the Middle East.

Rouhani made the remarks in an address to Majlis, the Iranian Parliament, while presenting the annual state budget on Tuesday.

"The US, by directly subjecting the Iranian nation, people in the region as well as international trade companies to plots, sanctions and pressure, is chiefly seeking to bring the powerful establishment in the Islamic Theocratic Republic of Iran to its knees," the president said.

The Americans, he added, view a powerful Iran as a major obstacle in this sensitive region, stressing that they are "afraid of Iran’s capabilities" and have therefore attempted to impede its domestic progress.

The US has been trying to create frustration among the Iranian population about the country’s future and to make them think that the Islamic establishment is ineffective, said the president.

"No one can deny the sanctions' negative impacts on the country’s economy as well as the people’s lives; but also no one can say that the US will [eventually] achieve its goals," President Rouhani stated.

"If La Belle France is staying to contribute to Syria's future, great, but if they are doing this to protect the (militants), this will bring no benefit to anyone," Ottoman Turkish-language Hurriyet daily newspaper quoted Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu as saying on Tuesday.

Turkey considers the YPG a terrorist organization and an extension of the outlawed Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK), which has been fighting for an autonomous region inside Turkey since 1984.

Cavusoglu further noted that Ankara has "the power to neutralize ISIS alone" amid speculations that the US exit from Syria would influence the military campaign against the Takfiri

US establishes two new military bases in Anbar province: Iraqi official
[PRESSTV] The US Army has set up two new military bases in Iraq’s western province of Anbar, an Iraqi official says, days after Washington announced the pullout of American forces from Syria.

The move comes less than a week after US President Donald Trump

announced his unexpected decision to pull all the 2,000 American ground troops out of the war-ravaged Syria. He said on Wednesday that the withdrawal would be slow and gradual, without providing a timetable.

According to al-Duleimi, the first base had been established in the northern Rumana sub-district in al-Qaim district, in the vicinity of the Syrian border, some 360 kilometers west of the picturesque provincial capital Ramadi.

The second base, he added, had been set up east of the city of al-Rutbah, about 310 kilometers west of Ramadi and less than 100 kilometers from the Syrian border.

The official added that the American bases were purportedly intended to assist Iraqi forces "secure the country’s borders and prevent infiltrations by the ISIS terrorist group."

Cash-strapped USA is in no position to attack Iran: Analyst
[PRESSTV] The presence of a US destroyer in the Persian Gulf has been described as an "insignificant" show of force to Iran by the United States.

A US aircraft carrier accompanied by a fleet of warships entered the Persian Gulf for the first time since 2001.

The US is reportedly sending an aircraft carrier strike group to the Persian Gulf in a show of force against Iran.
Tehran University Professor of political science, Hamed Mousavi, said in an interview published by RT on Tuesday that the presence of the US fleet in the Persian Gulf was considered a provocative move; however, it lacked any real significance.

"I don’t think we are going to see a military confrontation. But bringing the aircraft carrier, a nuclear armed aircraft carrier near Iranian waters is trying to provoke Iran and also threaten Iran," the faculty member said, adding that, "The significance is, right now at least, more of a threat rather than actual military confrontation."

The professor said that the presence of the fleet aimed to exert pressure on Iran.

"I think it is part of a larger strategy of the Trump administration trying to pressure Iran. This administration, since taking to office nearly two years, has been trying to pressure Iran via sanctions and via threats and now bringing the aircraft carrier very near to the Iranian waters is very provocative," he said.

Iran, Russia armed forces must boost anti-terror fight: Military chief
[PRESSTV] The armed forces of Iran and Russia should boost their cooperation in the fight against terrorism given the ongoing very sensitive situation in the region and across the world, Chairman of the Chiefs of Staff of the Iranian Armed Forces Major General Mohammad Baqeri says.

"The geopolitical and geo-strategic capacities of Iran and Russia necessitate that the two countries’ armed forces develop their cooperation areas from a long-term perspective and devise plans and manage them within the framework of the [Iran-Russia] joint military commission’s agreements," the top Iranian commander added.

Iran has been offering military advisory support to Syria at the request of the Damascus government, enabling its army to speed up its gains on various fronts against terror outfits.

However,

over the past few years, Israel, the closest ally of the US has frequently attacked military targets inside Syria in an attempt to prop up terrorist groups that have been suffering defeats in the battle against Syrian government forces.

India formally takes over operations at Chabahar port to support Afghanistan
[Khaama (Afghanistan)] India has formally taken over the operations at Chabahar port in Iran in a bid to further increase New Delhi’s support to Afghanistan, it has been reported.

Sources privy fo the development have told Hindustan Times that Iran formally handed over the port to India during a first meeting of the follow-up committee for the implementation of the Chabahar Agreement between Iran, Afghanistan, and India in the port city Tehran.

The sources further added that the Indian side at the meeting was led by joint secretary (Pakistain-Afghanistan-Iran) Deepak Mittal of the external affairs ministry, while the Iranian team was led by Mohammad Ali Hassanzadeh, the deputy head of the Ports and Maritime Organisation.

"This is a major step forward in India’s efforts to support Afghanistan and also for regional cooperation," an official in New Delhi told Hindustan Times.

In the meantime, Iran’s IRNA News has reported that the operation of the port has been handed over to the State-run Ports Global Limited for a period of ten years.

This comes as the United States has exempted Chabahar Port development and import of petroleum by Afghanistan from the new sanctions imposed on Iran.

A State Department front man told Rooters last month that the Secretary of State Mike Pompeo has granted an exception to certain U.S. sanctions that will allow the India-led development of a port in Iran as part of a new transportation corridor designed to boost Afghanistan’s economy.

One person killed, two wounded in tribal dispute in Iraq’s Anbar
Anbar (IraqiNews.com) – An Iraqi civilian was killed and two others were wounded Tuesday in a tribal dispute in Anbar province, a security source said.

The source told Arabic-language Almaalomah news website that a number of civilians “got into a dispute using machine guns in al-Sabhani area in central Haditha, west of Anbar.”

“The clashes left one person dead and two others wounded,” the source said, adding that the injured were moved to a nearby hospital for treatment.

The Iraqi government and non-governmental organizations launched many initiatives over the past period to persuade rival tribesmen to sign petitions to stop their fighting, which claims the lives of several people daily.

Chieftains across Iraq were also urged to intervene to put an end to tribal disputes in the governorate through forcing tribesmen to hand over their weapons to the Iraqi army.

Tribal struggles are weakening efforts to reconstruct the country following the defeat of Islamic State, which occupied large parts of the country since June 2014.

Analysis: Airstrike in Damascus an embarrassment for Syrian regime at crucial time
[Jpost] Syrian air defense confronted a complex threat over Damascus Tuesday night. It comes after several months of relative quiet for Bashir al-Assad's Syrian regime, which is grappling with a crises in eastern Syria as the US withdraws.

The Arclight airstrikes took place as the Syrian state media was seeking to highlight Christmas in Syria. Syria was witnessing a "victory over terrorism," SANA said. However the airstrikes were the most serious since September when an Israeli airstrike targeted Latakia and resulted in Syrian air defense shooting down a Russian IL-20 aircraft. That incident caused Moscow to give Syria the S-300 system and warn Israeli "hotheads" against further incidents.

For months it has been relatively quiet. An incident on November 29 and December 9th worked up Damascus as air defenses were activated. But both incidents seemed minor. One was a false alarm apparently. However December 25 was a major escalation. It comes as Syria is seeking to deal with a major crises in eastern Syria as the US withdraws.

Iraqi police disperse fresh protests in Basra over employment, services
Basra (IraqiNews.com) Iraqi police dispersed on Tuesday fresh protests in the southern Basra province as demonstrations seem to make a comeback decrying poor services.

Alsumaria News said police shot some tear gas bombs to disperse demonstrators who lit fire in car tyres at al-Jebeila street at the center of the province after staging a protest outside the governor’s office demanding jobs and enhanced services.

Basra had witnessed violent protests since early September over multiple social grievances, most notably water shortages and contamination. Some Iraqis officials had said Iran pumped contaminated water left over from its farmlands towards Iraqi territories, which prompted some Iraqi protesters to set the Iranian consulate in Basra on fire.

Egypt achieved self sufficiency in natural gas consumption in 2018: Ministry
The times, they are a-changing.
[AlAhram] Egypt's Ministry of Petroleum says that the country achieved self sufficiency in natural gas consumption in September 2018 due to the gradual increase in local production and the plan to develop major gas fields in the Mediterranean.

The discovery of the large offshore fields has resulted in the halting of natural gas imports for the first time in three years.

The ministry said in a statement that 2018 witnessed remarkable achievements and improvements in the oil and gas sector.

"Natural gas has been extended to more than 1 million residential units in 72 highly-populated cities and villages across Egypt in 2018," the statement read.

"As many as 18,784 cars have been adjusted to operate with natural gas during the period between January and November 2018."

One-hundred new gas stations also became operational in 2018.

Steps have also been taken to implement a phosphoric acid production complex worth $750 million in the New Valley governorate. The facility is estimated to produce 1 million tonnes of phosphoric acid per year.

This year also witnessed the continued increase in oil and gas production, which achieved the unprecedented level of 6.6 billion cubic metres (BCM) per day.

The ministry expects Egypt's natural gas production to stand at 6.750 BCM by the end of 2018.

According to the statement, 2018 saw 61 different oil and gas explorations ‐43 for oil and 18 for gas ‐ which has contributed to increasing the country's energy reserves.

The ministry stated that Egypt has reached an average production of 660,000 oil and oil condensates daily in 2018.

Last October, Petroleum Minister Tarek El-Molla announced that Egypt was no longer importing liquefied natural gas, saving the government EGP 3 billion that had been earmarked annually to meet local demands.

The savings are in large measure due to the massive offshore gas field Zohr, which began operation in December 2017. Zohr, with reserves of more than 30 trillion cubic feet (tcf), is among the largest gas fields discovered so far in the Mediterranean.

The field's output is central to the government’s plans not only to become self-sufficient but to transform Egypt into a regional energy hub.

Zohr’s discovery in 2015 offered the Egyptian government more than a breathing space to save on imports. The field will bring in much needed hard currency when Egypt starts exporting gas, which it is slated to do by 2019 when output from other gas fields comes online.

Buratai says 'defeated' Boko Haram nothing but 'a band of criminals'
[PULSE.NG] The Chief of Army Staff, Lieutenant-General Tukur Buratai, has branded terrorist group, Boko Haram
... not to be confused with Procol Harum, Harum Scarum, possibly to be confused with Helter Skelter. The Nigerian version of al-Qaeda and the Taliban rolled together and flavored with a smigeon of distinctly Subsaharan ignorance and brutality...
, as nothing but "a band of criminals" that has been defeated by troops of the Nigerian Army.

In a Christmas and New Year goodwill message directed at officers and soldiers of the Nigerian Army on Tuesday, December 25, 2018, the Army chief urged troops in the counter-insurgency operations in the northeast region to be wary of misinformation and propaganda being spread by the terrorist group.

Buratai assured that the group has been defeated by troops and is only using propaganda to paint a picture of strength and invincibility with the aim of demoralising the military.

He said, "It is evident that you have defeated the Boko Haram terrorists. Thus, they have now resorted to employing propaganda in order to demoralise you by spreading false messages of strength and invincibility.

"It is pertinent for troops to understand that Boko Haram holy warriors are nothing but a band of criminals. Therefore, you must all brace up to clear and flush out their remnants.

"We have superior training, fire power and experience. We have a history of successes on the battlefield both at home and abroad. This must be reflected in all our operations."

Buratai's defiant message comes in the wake of several attacks waged by Boko Haram holy warriors on military bases in 2018.

The most devastating of the attacks recently took place on November 18 when holy warriors overran the 157 Task Force Battalion in Metele village in Guzamala local government area of Borno State.

Even though many reports indicated that over 100 soldiers were killed in the Metele attack, with many others missing, the Army disclosed in a statement that 23 soldiers were killed with 31 others injured. 19 of them were recently buried in a military ceremony.

Around the time of the Metele attack, holy warriors also staged a series of attacks on Nigerian Army troops between November 2 and November 17 with 16 soldiers killed and 12 injured.

The attacks took place in Kukawa, Ngoshe, Kareto and Gajiram, all in Borno, but were 'successfully repelled' by troops who killed 'several members' of the terrorist group.

Many of the attacks were credited to Boko Haram faction, the Islamic State
...formerly ISIS or ISIL, depending on your preference. Before that al-Qaeda in Iraq, as shaped by Abu Musab Zarqawi. They're very devout, committing every atrocity they can find in the Koran and inventing a few more. They fling Allah around with every other sentence, but to hear the pols talk they're not really Moslems....
West Africa Province (ISWAP), which has renewed assaults on military bases in 2018.

Even though President Muhammadu Buhari and the military have claimed in the past that the group has been technically defeated, the president charged troops again after the Metele attack to remain committed to defeating Boko Haram.

Home Front: WoT
On Mattis
[CDRSalamander] First of all, this Christmas Eve, regardless of your confession I wish all peace and happiness.

As we are all busy, I'll just cut to the chase.

Last Thursday I offered a few points on Syria, and I guess I should make a few points about Secretary Mattis's departure as well.

Slightly modified from some comments I made SEPCOR, here is the Executive Summary:

We're all going to be just fine. I've been a Mattis guy since 2001, but SECDEF is a position for a politician, not a Field Marshall. Even though I have 100% trust in him for any position he may find himself in, Mattis was never quite well suited for the position of SECDEF as it was designed. He had to get a waiver for a reason. I am still a Mattis guy and I wish him well.

As for who should replace him, anyone who can get a nod from the Senate and will continue to promote what Trump has been doing and I have been honking about since Bush43:

(1) decouple from being the world's policeman,

(2) get our NATO allies to pull their fair share of the load. 2% isn't exactly asking for a lot.

Again, we're fine.

- We are mostly in the Middle East due to strategic inertia and to tidy up problems generally of our own creation. We don't need their oil anymore.

- While our debt issues are huge, we are in better shape than any other major nation on the planet. When the music stops, the world will groan, but we will hurt less than almost anyone else.

- We feed ourselves.

- Our entire hemisphere is of zero threat to us.

- The only real global challenger we have will be China and we have absolutely ZERO reason to have a land dispute with them on mainland Asia. Any conflict will - if we are smart about it - be mostly an air and sea conflict for us, with any land force hopefully limited to islands.

What we don't need is an expanded universe of nations and regions we are garrisoning in order to secure their peace at the cost of increasing the threat of possible war for us over things that are none of our business.

Specifically WRT Syria, I've said it a hundred and I'll say it a million times; if it were so important to secure - the area of the West most negatively impacted by the Syrian civil war would have a string of divisions lining the eastern banks of the Euphrates - the Europeans. You see a sprinkling of French there (the former colonial power), but that is about it.

It is only our circus and our monkeys
So, it appears the good O-5/6 knows a little about Polish aphorisms.
if we stay long enough. Time to go. If we need to come back and break more things and kill more people for a few months, then fine - we'll do it.

I can argue the other side of the argument as well ... but I frankly don't care to any more. I save that energy for IRQ and AFG.

We do until some politicians accept bribes of fractions of a penny on the dollar to give that away, too. Like medications or strategic industries.

Bingo. All problems unrelated to China - Syria, Iraq/Afg, Ukraine etc - need to be viewed as REGIONAL disputes that require regional solutions involving local or regional powers. Our involvement in these solutions needs to be first and foremost diplomatic, with occasional insertions of air power and other forms of "offshore balancing."

Time to listen to realists arguing for offshore balancing such as Barry Posen of MIT and John Mearsheimer of U Chicago.

#6  There is an existential threat at our porous southern border of terrorists, human smuggling and drugs.
That threat originated from within, from the large fraction of the electorate willing to abandon national sovereignty for stupid reasons, led by the globalists. In addition the Postal Service subsidizes the mailing of fentanyl and carfentanil from China. Who's to blame for that?

#7  The only reason we are in Syria is because the empty suit had to save face after weenying out of his red line.

That and kill Baghdadi

The Middle East is the Middle East and a tar baby of apocalyptic proportions. We should just stay the hell out and just trim up our balance of payments by selling them anything and everything they need to kill each other.

The best way to stop all of the ME nonsense is to knock the spot price of oil to about $45 a barrel and all of the will go broke and back to living in tents and camel racing. You would see a lot of ME economies just collapse.

RAB DG: Crores of taka coming from Dubai to influence election
[Dhaka Tribune] Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) Director General (DG) Benazir Ahmed has said that huge amount of cash is being sent from Dubai to Bangladesh to influence the 11th general election.

His remarks came at a press briefing in Dhaka on Tuesday afternoon, after a drive that ended with the arrest of three men and seizure of Tk8 crore in cash and Tk10 crore in cheque.

He claimed that the trio was involved in "instigating violence by distributing illegal money" ahead of the polls, scheduled to be held across the country on Sunday.

Conducted based on a tip-off, the elite force’s raid had started on Monday afternoon and ended on Tuesday morning ‐ during which Rab swept through the office of export-import and contractor firm United Corporation on the 27th floor of City Centre, situated in the capital’s Motijheel, and Amena Enterprise at Gulshan.

Benazir added that they also recovered a number of vouchers, several types of receipts, slips and cash books which showed where the money went and who received them.

At the press briefing held at United Corporation, he said the documents they have recovered during the raid showed that some Tk150 crore have already been disbursed from that office.

RAB identified the arrestees as Amena Enterprise General Manager JoynalAbedin and office assistant Alamgir Hossain, and Ali Haider, managing director of United Corporation.

One of them also used to work at HawaBhaban, the former political office of BNP Chairperson the loathesome Khaleda Zia
Three-term PM of Bangla, widow of deceased dictator Ziaur Rahman, head of the Bangla Nationalist Party, an apparent magnet for corruption ...
at Banani which was the centre of power during the BNP-Jamaat-e-Islami

government.

The owner of United Corporation, Mahmudul Hasan, is an expatriate living in Dubai, and BNP’s candidate in Shariatpur 3 constituency Miah Nuruddin Ahmed Apu is the owner of Amena Enterprise.

RAB 3 Operation Officer Additional Superintendent of Police ABM Faizullah also told the Dhaka Tribune on Tuesday evening that a case was filed against the trio ‐ under the Money Laundering Prevention Act and Anti-terrorism Act ‐ at Motijheel cop shoppe.

Syria-Lebanon-Iran
Syrian army reinforced close to Manbij front with Turkish-backed forces
[Ynet] Syrian government troops backed by Russian forces have sent extra troops towards the city of Manbij in coordination with the militia that controls it, a militia front man said, as Ottoman Turkish-backed Syrian rebels said they were preparing to attack it.

The deployment was coordinated with the US-backed militia in Manbij, the front man for the Manbij Military Council said. It is part of the wider buildup of forces in the area.

"The battle will soon start," Major Youssef Hamoud, front man for the National Army, the main Ottoman Turkish-backed rebel force in the area, told Rooters. "What we see on the front now is reinforcements to all forces to reach full preparedness for the battle."

"The Russian army has restored the Syrian-Russian coordination centre to Arima village to the west of Manbij city, after its withdrawal from there a while ago," said Sharfan Darwish, the front man for the Manbij Military Council.

Manbij was seized in 2016 from Islamic State by Syrian militia allied to the SDF, which control roughly a quarter of Syria. Its capture was a milestone in the US-backed campaign against Islamic State.

Rebel group announces start of Manbij operation, NLF denies claim

[ALMASDARNEWS] The rebel group Ahrar al-Sharqiyah announced late this afternoon that their forces had begun the long-awaited offensive to capture Manbij.

In a statement through their official social media accounts, Ahrar al-Sharqiyah said they have begun their assault to capture the town of Manbij from the Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF).

However,
a person who gets all wrapped up in himself makes a mighty small package...
it appears not everyone is on board for this announcement, as the spokesperson for the Ottoman Turkish-backed National Liberation Front (NLF) denied these report.

The NLF spokesperson said that the Manbij operation had yet to start, adding that all reports claiming that their offensive began are false.

The Syrian Democratic Forces have not reported any military activity at the Manbij front, despite the large buildup of Ottoman Turkish-backed troops near the town.

Syrian govt. forces march into Arima village near Kurdish-held Manbij

[PRESSTV] Syrian army soldiers, supported by Russian troops, have marched into a village in the country’s northern province of Aleppo, after US-sponsored and Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) decided to hand it over to government forces.

A local source, speaking on condition of anonymity
... for fear of being murdered...
, told Syria's pro-government and Arabic-language al-Masdar news agency that Syrian soldiers entered Arima village, located 20 kilometers (12 miles) northeast of the city of al-Bab and 65 kilometers (40 miles) northeast of Aleppo, on Tuesday after Kurdish bandidos bandidos murderous Moslems withdrew from the area.

The source added that 40 pickup trucks carrying Syrian army soldiers, two tanks, trucks carrying military equipment and armored vehicles were seen crossing into the village, which lies northeast of Manbij.

The development came on the heels of The Sick Man of Europe Turkey
...just another cheapjack Moslem dictatorship, brought to you by the Moslem Brüderbund....
’s preparations for an anticipated military campaign against People's Protection Units (YPG), which is the backbone of the SDF, in northern Syria.

Ottoman Turkish Defense Minister Hulusi Akar said on Tuesday that preparations for an offensive in the eastern bank of the Euphrates River against Kurdish YPG bandidos bandidos murderous Moslems are proceeding as planned.
