Ocasio-Cortez Claims Global Warming Is Killing Americans, Gov Allowing It
h/t Instapundit
[DailyWire] Socialist Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez claimed on Wednesday that the United States government is allowing global warming to kill Americans and provided absolutely no evidence whatsoever to validate her claims.

In her political career, only weeks old, Ocasio-Cortez has become known for making completely false statements, lying, and having a hard time understanding basic concepts and principles.

Ocasio-Cortez continued this pattern today when she claimed: "Americans are dying because of a government too coward to save the planet."

The Media's Latest Scam: Trump's Going to Be Impeached Because of the Michael Cohen Plea
h/t Instapundit
One of the "it’s so horrible it’s funny" things about the Trump era has been all the "Wow! Pence better get ready because this time we’ve got him for sure" stories. Trump says something, a scandal breaks, the media reports that an anonymous person who may or may not exist has revealed a shocking crime and it's supposed to be all over! Yet, like Jason from the Friday the 13th series, Trump shrugs off the media’s ax to the forehead or Democrats’ shotgun blast to the chest like it’s nothing and he’s back doing what he does five minutes later while they pull their hair out.

The latest story of this sort is Trump’s lawyer Michael Cohen pleading guilty to a number of crimes, all of them unrelated to Trump except for a campaign finance violation. Cohen paid off the porn stars Trump slept with and Trump paid him back.

First of all, is this a campaign finance violation at all? That is arguable because campaign finance laws, beyond the basics, are a murky, byzantine mess that only highly specialized lawyers can navigate and even they only get definitive answers when a judge rules.

Trump’s argument will probably be something akin to, "My personal lawyer, Michael Cohen, paid off those women I slept with and I reimbursed him. No campaign funds were used. Michael Cohen told me it was legally fine and I did it because I didn’t want to cause any embarrassment to my family." Is this true? We can’t know for sure at this point, but it certainly seems to be an extremely plausible argument. That is doubly so because Trump has a history of setting up nondisclosure agreements and paying out what could be considered "hush money."

Cohen claimed that this was done to influence the election, likely because he was promised less time in jail on his other charges if he’d be willing to agree to something that could be used to implicate Trump. If this were to go further, you’d be likely to see a he said/she said argument. Cohen, who’s just been convicted of numerous crimes, will claim his client knew he was breaking the law, did it specifically for purposes of influencing the election, and told him to do this. Trump will say that isn’t true and that he had no reason to believe anything illegal was going on because his lawyer, whose advice he trusted, told him it was perfectly fine.

All of this is on top of the fact that whether this is even a campaign finance issue is extremely dubious. Apparently, no campaign funds were used. Cohen was paid back and using your own lawyer to coordinate that kind of payoff seems reasonable. Pretty clearly, no married man would want that kind of information out there, so you can’t even definitively say it was done for the sake of the campaign.

That being said, some people might compare this to payoffs to a mistress from a John Edwards donor, but it’s not really the same thing. Trump ultimately used his own money to pay off the women via his lawyer. Edwards didn’t pay back his political donor, which made it much easier to argue that it was a backdoor campaign contribution. Yet and still, Edwards wasn’t convicted in court over that allegation and Obama’s Justice Department dropped the case.

#3  Trump was always going to be impeached if the Dems take the House. This witch hunt was never about Russian COllusion, it was about finding anything, as far back and as far reaching as possible, to use to justify the Impeachment. The impeachment is actually about raw power and how the loser Hildabeest got beat by an actual outsider who wasn't in the Uniparty ruling the nation as it loots the treasury and steals the sovereign rights of the actual citizens.

Judge Foils 'Deep State Bureaucrats' in Obamacare Case, Demands IRS Return $839M to 6 States
On Tuesday, a federal district court judge in Texas ordered the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) to return more than $839 million that bureaucrats effectively stole from six states in a violation of the plain text of the Affordable Care Act, also known as Obamacare.

"This is a prime example of how the administrative state works ‐ and how difficult it can be to unravel the work of deep state bureaucrats," Louisiana Solicitor General Liz Murrill, who helped argue the case, told PJ Media.

In the ruling, U.S. District Judge Reed O'Connor ruled that the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) had unlawfully required six states ‐ Indiana, Kansas, Louisiana, Nebraska, Texas, and Wisconsin ‐ to foot the bill for health care providers, paying a fee that Obamacare clearly exempted them from.

Obamacare mandated that more Americans purchase health insurance. In order to avoid enriching health care providers ‐ known as Managed Care Organizations or MCOs ‐ the law levied a health insurance provider fee (HIPF). Due to an actuarial rule established under Alex Azar, secretary of the department of Health and Human Services, states had to pay the HIPFs, to the tune of hundreds of millions.

"The law expressly forbids imposing the fee on states," Liz Murrill told PJ Media. "It was intended to basically take back some of the profits insurers would achieve from the expansion of insurers and the associated increase in premiums (projected to come from a less sick, younger population)."

Instead, the deep state bureaucrats forced the states to foot the bill.

"Obamacare has always been an economic house of cards, and this ruling has again exposed it for what it is: a money laundering scheme," Louisiana Attorney General Jeff Landry said in a statement. "This is a prime example of the deep administrative state doing something that Congress expressly forbid."

Landry argued that the deep state broke the law it was attempting to apply. "Even though the Affordable Care Act forbid imposing the Health Insurance Providers Fee (HIPF) on states, the federal government found a way to do it anyway," he explained.

"HIPF has always been an unconstitutional fee imposed upon our State’s workers," Landry concluded. "I commend our Solicitor General Liz Murrill and the entire multi-state coalition for achieving victory in this important case."
If the 'publicans weren't getting their pockets lined from this they would be repealing it... right?

In case you forgot – Congress paid $17 Million in hush money to protect politicians
[American Thinker] For all those Democrats and the MSM who are seeking to use Michael Cohen’s plea deal to implicate President Trump in the alleged crime confessed to by Cohen, don’t forget to use the precedent set by the highly respected institution we call the Congress of the United States of America when you make arguments that Donald Trump was trying to influence an election with a payment to silence his accusers.

The following is a list of articles from major news outlets with short excerpts; written about members of congress paying "secret settlements" for everything from sexual harassment to who knows what else ‐ because we really don’t know "what else" they did - it’s a secret.

The secrecy, or can we say cover-up, is meant to protect the identity of the elected officials involved who need to silence their accusers. You know, just in case the information might become public and affect their position in congress or -- wait for it -- the outcome of their next election.

Sexual harassment fund exposes Congress

"Under Congressional Accountability Act, taxpayers pay for secret settlements. Where's the accountability?

When sexual harassers agree on confidential settlements with victims, at least the payments come out of the harassers' own pockets or from companies that choose to employ them.

But not, as the nation has learned this month, when the harasser serves in Congress. Then, taxpayers foot the bill. And the entire episode remains hidden."

Two dead, one injured in knife attack near Paris
[10News] Two people were killed and one "badly injured" in a knife attack Thursday morning in Trappes, a suburb west of Paris, according to France's National Police. The attacker was also killed, police said.

"After the attack, he ran into a house to hide. He left shortly afterward and threatened police before being neutralized," police said.

Authorities have not yet given an indication of motive for the attack. The matter may have been a family dispute, CNN's French affiliate BFM-TV reported.

The two people who were killed were the attacker's mother and sister, a spokesman for the Interior Ministry told CNN.

The French Interior Ministry urged the public via Twitter to "avoid the area and respect the security perimeters so as not to disrupt the police work."

Interior Minister Gérard Collomb tweeted: "The individual has been neutralized. My first thoughts are with the victims and their loved ones. I want to salute the actions and the exemplary mobilization of our police forces. They are already investigating to establish the circumstances of this tragedy."

Collomb later tweeted that he had arrived at the police station in Trappes, less than 20 miles from Paris, to be briefed on the situation.

ISIS claimed responsibility for the attack via its Amaq media outlet but did not provide any evidence to support the claim.

The anti-terror Paris prosecution office has not yet opened an investigation into the attack, as is customary if there is a strong indication of a link to terrorism.

On Thursday, ISIS released what it said was a new audio message from its leader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi, in which he purportedly issued a rallying call to supporters in the face of continued military defeats.

According to BFM-TV, Trappes is a poor town in the middle of a wealthy area. Half of its roughly 30,000 inhabitants are aged under 25, the broadcaster said, and the unemployment rate is close to 20%
Update from The Daily Mail at 10:45 a.m. EDT:
:The man, identified locally as taxi driver Kamel Salhi, was shot dead by police. He had been on a terror watch-list since 2016.

French Interior Minister Gerard Collomb arrived at the scene not long after the attacker had been shot dead, and described the 36-year-old as a 'criminal who had significant psychiatric problems'.

'He was known (to police) for advocating terrorism but it seems he was a disturbed person rather than someone who could respond to calls for action from terrorist organisations like Daesh,' he said, using the Arabic acronym for ISIS.

Mr Salhi had recently returned to his family home Trappes, after separating from his girlfriend in the nearby Val d’Oise department.

Following a conviction of 'apologising for terrorism’ in 2016, which saw him end up on a police terror watchlist, he was fired from his job as a bus driver.

He had reportedly been making a living as a taxi driver, but is said to have suffered with severe psychological problems and was known to be a heavy drinker.

Trappes has a population of around 30,000 and is part of the far suburbs of the greater Paris area.

Only a short drive from the wealthy area of Versailles, home to the world-famous Versailles Palace, the town is known for problems linked to poverty, gangs and hardline interpretations of Islam.

It has a large Muslim population and about 50 locals are suspected of having left France to fight for the Islamic State group in Syria and Iraq, according to French security sources.

In July 2013, Trappes was the scene of a series of riots which saw Muslim protesters torch cars and attack a police station.

Hundreds stormed the local police headquarters after officers had tried to fine a woman for wearing a niqab, a full-face Islamic veil which is forbidden in France, and arrested her husband for trying to stop them.

Organization Behind Massive ‘SUPER EID' Muslim Celebration at Vikings stadium labeled terrorist
[Daily Caller] An organization linked to a designated terrorist group participated at the "Super Eid" event at U.S. Bank Stadium in Minneapolis Tuesday and Wednesday to celebrate the Muslim holiday Eid al-Adha.

Members from the group called the Muslim American Society

participated in the massive two-day event, which included an estimated 15,000 to 30,000 participants. Imam Asad Zamam, executive director of the Muslim American Society in Minnesota, was a featured speaker at the event, according to the event’s website.

Thousands of Muslim participants at the event in the Minnesota Vikings stadium chanted "Allahu akbar" while praying, WND reported. The phrase loosely translates into "God is the greatest," however, it is also frequently used in acts of radical Islamic terrorism.

CIA Director Gina Haspel announces new leadership picks
[CBS] CIA Director Gina Haspel's pick for the number three role at the agency is, like her choice for deputy director, a career analyst with three decades of experience across a number of specialized fields.

Andrew "Andy" Makridis will assume the position of chief operating officer, a position that does not require Senate confirmation.

In a press release announcing Makridis' appointment, Haspel said, "Andy brings a wealth of expertise from his 32-year CIA career and has a deep understanding of how the agency works."

"He is the ultimate team player," Haspel said.

Haspel also named Sonya Holt, a 34-year veteran of the agency, to the role of chief diversity and inclusion officer. "To succeed against intelligence challenges facing us today," Haspel said, "we must have officers who bring a variety of life experiences and viewpoints to the job."

Holt served as the lead for the Director's Advisory Group (DAG) Implementation, an agency initiative formed in 2013 to address recommendations made by former Secretary of State Madeleine Albright to help more women at CIA reach leadership posts. The initiative concluded this year, after five years, and a final report is forthcoming. In an update issued last month, the agency noted that women now make up 36 percent of the Senior Intelligence Service.

The CIA said this week was the first that three senior officials ‐ Makridis, Holt and deputy director Vaughn Bishop, who was sworn in on August 6 ‐ began in their new roles.

Our lobbying 'has certainly had an impact' - AfriForum on Trump's land expropriation comments
[News24] Lobby group AfriForum has claimed its work in the United States led to President Donald Trump's tweet on land expropriation and murders on farms.

FOLLOW LIVE: SA reacts to Donald Trump comments on land expropriation, farm murders

"We welcome it," said Ernst Roets. The group travelled to the US in May to lobby individual members of the US Senate and the House of Representatives.

"I think our lobbying has certainly had an impact because we have spoken with a lot of people who have had contact with President Trump and we have spoken with many think tanks, one of them for example the Cato Institute, which has taken a very strong stance shortly before this statement now by President Trump."

Trump tweeted that he had asked his secretary of state to look into land expropriation and the killing of farmers in South Africa.

"I have asked Secretary of State @SecPompeo to closely study the South Africa land and farm seizures and expropriations and the large scale killing of farmers. South African Government is now seizing land from white farmers," Trump tweeted.

The war in the desert Why the Sahara is terror's new front line
[BBC] It is just before 15:00 on Saturday in Timbuktu and the intense desert heat has reached its peak.

Five years ago, Islamist occupiers were driven out of the historical town - but violent extremists have never been far away.

A few people are browsing through the silver jewellery and leatherwork at a small Tuareg curio market by the security checkpoint at the airport entrance.

It’s on the outskirts of town and both French troops and UN peacekeepers have set up what they call a "super-camp" there. At this sleepy time of day, people are working inside their air-conditioned containers and all that can be heard is the low hum of generators. Then, blaring sirens.
JNIM (Jamaat Nusrat al-Islam wal-Muslimin) is mentioned, the current local incarnation of Al Qaeda in North Africa.

Cohen's father said he didn't survive Holocaust to have his name 'sullied' by Trump
[The Hill] The decision of President Trump’s former longtime lawyer Michael Cohen to plead guilty to multiple fraud charges and campaign finance law violations reportedly came after a conversation he had with his father earlier this year, who said he did not survive the Holocaust to have his name "sullied" by Trump.

The Wall Street Journal reported on Wednesday that a person familiar with the conversation said the exchange prompted Cohen, who once said he would "take a bullet" for the president, to break with Trump.

Maurice Cohen, a Polish Holocaust survivor, reportedly urged his son not to protect Trump and said that he did not survive the Holocaust to have his name "sullied" by the president, a person familiar with the conversation told the Journal.

Trump first said Michael Cohen was no longer his lawyer on June 15, telling reporters he hadn't spoken to Cohen "in a long time."

On June 20, Michael Cohen resigned as deputy finance chairman of the Republican National Committee, tweeting his first public criticism of Trump, which referenced his father, the Journal notes.

Russian military shoots down three jihadist UAVs above Idlib
[AlMasdar] Three UAVs launched from the territory controlled by snuffies were destroyed on Tuesday in the south of Syria’s Idlib province, the head of the Russian Center for Reconciliation of the Warring Parties, Major General Alexei Tsygankov, said on Wednesday.

"On August 21, military of the Syrian Armed Forces spotted three combat drones approaching positions of the government troops on the western outskirts of the settlement of Abu Dali in the south of Idlib province, from the side of the territories controlled by illegal armed units," he said.

The general said the drones had been destroyed with the use of the aircraft defense cannon ZU-23 and small arms. No Syrian military were maimed, he added.

Tsygankov also said illegal armed units in the southwest of Syria have surrendered during the day one infantry fighting vehicle as well as 489 units of small arms and 500 kilograms of munitions of different type and caliber.

"Representatives of the Russian reconciliation center together with the Center for the Reception, Allocation and Accommodation of Refugees in Syria control the return of civilians from the Idlib de-escalation zone through the humanitarian corridor Abu al-Duhur. A total of 416 people, including 224 children have left in the past 24 hours," the general said.

The Russian reconciliation center continues to fulfill the tasks assigned to them after the completion of the military campaign in Syria. They regularly travel around the country’s liberated areas to assess the humanitarian situation. The main efforts of the Russian military are now focused on assistance to the refugees returning back to their homes and evacuation of civilians from de-escalation zones.

They are also tasked with lending humanitarian assistance to the Syrian population, coordinating work to restore the infrastructure in war-torn regions, assisting in the return of refugees and in the integration of snuffies who have laid down arms into the peaceful life, as well as monitoring the ceasefire.

Change of plans: Syrian Army to target three major areas in northwest Syria
AlMasdar] A source from the Syrian Arab Army (SAA) told al-Masdar News, tonight, that the military has no plans to attack the key town of Morek in northern Hama.

The source, who is currently at the front-lines in northern Hama, said that the Syrian Arab Army will instead focus on three major areas during their upcoming offensive:

    1. Northwest Hama: The Syrian Arab Army is going to clear the last areas before the key town of Qala’at al-Madiq in the al-Ghaab Plain.

    2. Southeast Idlib: The source said that the Syrian Army wants to clear the remaining towns around the Abu Dhuhour area.

    3. Northern Latakia: This does not come as a surprise because the northern axes of the Jabal al-Akrad and Jabal Turkmen regions are all that remain under jihadist control in northern Latakia.

Once these areas are captured, the Syrian Arab Army will begin the second phase of their offensive, which is more heavily concentrated on the strategic city of Jisr al-Shughour in southwest Idlib.

The source did stress that negotiations between the Ottoman Turkish and Russian governments are still ongoing at this time; it is very likely that a deal will be reached to set parameters on the this upcoming offensive.

Syrian Army cuts all supply lines to ISIL’s last stronghold in southern Syria
[AlMasdar] The Syrian Arab Army (SAA) has officially sealed off the entire al-Safa Mountain after several days of fighting with the Islamic State

They're very devout, committing every atrocity they can find in the Koran and inventing a few more. (ISIS/ISIS/IS).

According to a military source in Damascus, the Syrian Army and their allies from the National Defense Forces (NDF) identified smuggling routes for the Islamic State this week and officially cut them off.

The source told al-Masdar, tonight, that the Islamic State is running out of supplies, including water and food.

ISIS is now offering to release the kidnapped civilians from the Sweida Governorate in exchange for safe passage to the al-Mayadeen countryside in rural Deir Ezzor.

The Syrian Arab Army is likely to accept this offer because it will not only secure the release of the captives, but also, it will consolidate the Islamic State forces of Evil to one desert region in Syria.

Seamus Bruner: ‘Contracts Flowed from Robert Mueller's FBI to James Comey' at Lockheed Martin
[Breitbart] Seamus Bruner, Government Accountability Institute (GAI) researcher and author of Compromised: How Money and Politics Drive FBI Corruption, explained how former FBI Directors James Comey and Robert Mueller leveraged their government contacts to enrich themselves. He joined Peter Schweizer, GAI president and Breitbart News senior editor-at-large, for an interview on Monday’s edition of SiriusXM’s Breitbart News Tonight with hosts Rebecca Mansour and Joel Pollak.

Bruner and Schweizer examined what they described as a "revolving door" of "cronyism" within the federal government’s national security and intelligence apparatuses, focusing on the monetization of security clearances held by former administration officials, such as John Brennan and James Clapper.

Bruner noted the growth of Comey’s net worth between 2003 and 2009, after Comey left the Department of Justice to join Lockheed Martin as senior vice president and lead counsel.

"It doesn’t really make much sense why [Lockheed Martin] would pay [James Comey] upwards of six million dollars in a single year," assessed Bruner. "But one reason ‐ aside from his security clearance ‐ is that his buddy Robert Mueller is running the FBI. They begin passing 100-million-dollar-plus contracts to Lockheed Martin."

Malcom Turnbull Is Out As Aussie PM
It's been brewing for a few weeks and now it's a done deal.
[Daily Telegraph / Tim Blair] - It’s all over for Malcolm Turnbull, who will fall just slightly short of becoming "the longest-serving prime minister since Menzies. Possibly ever." Let’s follow the fun as it unfolds.

This morning kicked off with several Turnbull abandonments:
Liberal party ministers Mathias Cormann, Michaelia Cash, and Mitch Fifield have now abandoned Mr Turnbull just after 9.30am and want him to resign, also calling for another leadership spill today.

Mr Cormann said he had met with Mr Turnbull to tell him he no longer had the support of the majority of the Liberal Party.
Latest update is that he's out as PM but he's remaining in Parliament, which breaks his pledge to leave entirely if he lost the PM job. What a wanker!

Saudi Arabia 'seeks death penalty' for female activist
[Al Jazeera] Soddy Arabia
...a kingdom taking up the bulk of the Arabian peninsula. Its primary economic activity involves exporting oil and soaking Islamic rubes on the annual hajj pilgrimage. The country supports a large number of princes in whatcha might call princely splendor. When the oil runs out the rest of the world is going to kick sand in the Soddy national face...
's public prosecutor is seeking the death penalty
for five human rights
...which are often intentionally defined so widely as to be meaningless...
activists who are currently being tried by the country's terrorism tribunal, according to rights groups.

Among the detainees is Israa al-Ghomgham, who Saudi activists say is the first woman to face capital punishment for human rights-related work.

Human Rights Watch (HRW) said in a statement on Tuesday the charges against the activists "do not resemble recogniseable crimes" and include "incitement to protest", "chanting slogans hostile to the regime" and "providing moral support to rioters".

Authorities have held the five activists, along with another not facing the death penalty, in pretrial detention without legal representation for more than two years.

They are due to appear in court again on October 28, according to HRW.

"Any execution is appalling, but seeking the death penalty for activists like Israa al-Ghomgham, who are not even accused of violent behaviour, is monstrous," said Sarah Leah Whitson, Middle East director at HRW.

ALQST, a UK-based group advocating for human rights in Saudi Arabia, previously reported the public prosecutor's decision on Twitter on Sunday.

The rights group also denied social media reports that the detainees had already been executed, saying the case was "still under review."

EU must speed up efforts to save nuclear deal — Iran state TV
[ARABNEWS] Iran said on Monday that Europe
...also known as Moslem Lebensraum...
should accelerate its efforts to salvage a 2015 nuclear deal between Tehran and major powers that was abandoned by US President Donald Trump
...New York real estate developer, described by Dems as illiterate, racist, misogynistic, and what ever other unpleasant descriptions they can think of, elected by the rest of us as 45th President of the United States...
in May, Iranian state TV reported.

"Europeans and other signatories of the deal (China and Russia) have been trying to save the deal ... but the process has been slow. It should be accelerated," foreign ministry front man Bahram Qasemi told a weekly news conference broadcast live on state TV.

"Iran relies mainly on its own capabilities to overcome America’s new sanctions."

European states have been scrambling to ensure Iran gets enough economic benefits to persuade it to stay in the deal since US withdrawal from the deal, which Trump said was "deeply flawed."

The United States has imposed sanctions on Iran in August, targeting Iran’s trade in gold and other precious metals, its purchases of US dollars and its car industry.

Iraq
Salahuddin adventures: 7 turbans die tired, Shiite paramilitaries give their all

Seven Islamic State members killed in army airstrike in Salahuddin

Salahuddin (IraqiNews.com) Seven Islamic State members were killed in an airstrike carried out by the Iraqi army in Salahuddin province, DPA reported.

In remarks on Wednesday, Col. Mohamed Khalil al-Bazi, from Salahuddin Operations Command, said “the shelling took place on Wednesday in al-Shai region in Mutaibija, east of Samarra, leaving seven fighters killed and two motorbikes destroyed.”

The shelling, according to the source, “targeted two rest houses and tunnels that were discovered through drones.”

The dormant cells in Mutaibija, “changed its style and reduced number of its militants to avoid airstrikes,” it added.

Paramilitary personnel killed, injured in Islamic State attack, east of Salahuddin

Salahuddin (IraqiNews.com) The pro-government paramilitary troops have foiled an Islamic State attack, in the southern Asdira village in Shirqat town, east of Salahuddin province.

In a statement on Wednesday, the media service of al-Hashd al-Shaabi (Popular Mobilization Forces) said “a suicide bomber, attacked, late on Tuesday, a checkpoint of al-hashd al-shaabi, before the fighters repulsed the attack and prevented the militants from targeting civilians.”

The attack, according to the statement, “left many PMF personnel killed and injured.”

The troops “started, after the attack, operations in search for hiding militants,” the statement added. “The situation is currently under control in the village and areas in its vicinity.”

On Tuesday, news reports quoted sources as saying that around 26 people were killed and injured in the same village in two bomb blasts, one of them targeted PMFs.

Suicide attack kills six Sunni fighters in northern Iraq: Police

[AlAhram] A suicide attack on a former Iraqi lawmaker's house killed at least six tribal militiamen and wounded seven others in a northern Sunni Muslim village early on Wednesday, police said. No group has claimed responsibility for the attack but Islamic State militants operate in the area.

A militant wearing a suicide vest blew himself up just after midnight at Adnan al-Ganam's house in the village of Asdira, Colonel Khalil al-Sahn, the police chief of surrounding Shirqat district, told Reuters.

Those killed were members of the Tribal Mobilisation Forces, a network of Sunni militias that back the government in its fight against Islamic State, he said.

The village is north of Tikrit, the capital of Iraq's Salahuddin province.

Islamic State, which had seized control of much of northern Iraq in 2014, lost Shirqat to U.S.-backed Iraqi security forces supported by Sunni tribal fighters in 2016.

Israel opens probe against soldiers who killed two Gaza protesters
[DAWN] Israel’s army announced on Tuesday an investigation into soldiers who shot dead two Palestinian teenagers in separate incidents on the Gaza border, the first such probe in months of protests and clashes.

Its decision to open an investigation was a rare step and comes with Israel having faced international criticism over its use of live fire during unrest along the Gaza frontier.

Israel maintains its use of force is necessary to defend the border and stop infiltrations and attacks.

An army statement said that Abdul Fatah Abdul Nabi, 18, was shot dead near the border fence in the northern Gaza Strip on March 30, one of 20 Palestinians killed that day as Gazans launched a wave of mass protests along the frontier called the “March of Return”.

Tuesday’s army statement did not give the circumstances of Nabi’s death but the military said at the time that 10 of those killed had “documented terror backgrounds” in Islamist movement Hamas and other militant groups and were killed “whilst carrying out acts of terror.”

Immigration Watch: Feds: Man charged in Minnesota stabbing was in US illegally
[FoxNews] A man accused of fatally stabbing his ex-girlfriend in Minnesota before slashing his own throat re-entered the U.S. illegally after being deported in 2012, federal authorities said Wednesday.

Fraider Diaz-Carbajal, 35, was charged Monday with second-degree murder in the Aug. 12 death of Enedelia Perez Garcia, 27, who died in his apartment in the Minneapolis suburb of Shakopee. Authorities said she suffered multiple stab wounds all over her body.

Diaz-Carbajal was initially hospitalized in critical condition, then booked into jail Monday. Bail was set at $1.5 million.

U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement spokesman Shawn Neudauer told The Associated Press on Wednesday that Diaz-Carbajal was deported to Mexico in December 2012 because he had entered the country illegally, then racked up a criminal record that included three drunken-driving convictions and one for domestic assault. The spokesman said Diaz-Carbajal sometime later entered the country illegally again, and that that's a felony punishable by up to 20 years in prison.

ICE has placed an immigration detainer on him with the Scott County Jail, Neudauer said, meaning the agency has probable cause to believe Diaz-Carbajal is deportable. It gives ICE authority to take custody of him if he's released for any reason.

According to the criminal complaint, a woman who lived in the man's apartment told police she heard Garcia and Diaz-Carbajal arguing and Garcia yelling "drop the knife." She saw him pinning Garcia down and stabbing her, the complaint added. She then saw him slash his own throat and stab himself several times, it said. The witness told police Garcia and Diaz-Carbajal had dated for three years before they broke up about a month ago.

Mentally ill man pleads guilty to helping radicals in Syria

Sheikh Rashid accused of manhandling elderly woman, damaging cameraman's phone
[DAWN] Newly appointed Railways Minister Sheikh Rashid allegedly manhandled an elderly woman who attempted to meet him and later damaged the cellphone of a cameraman who had managed to record the incident, it emerged on Wednesday.

Channel 24 cameraman Aqib, whose phone was allegedly damaged, narrated details of the episode that took place on Tuesday afternoon to DawnNewsTV. Rashid, chief of the Awami Moslem League, has denied the allegations.
No, no! Certainly not!
According to the cameraman, the incident occurred when he and a news hound had reached Rashid's Lal Haveli residence in Rawalpindi to record an Eid-related programme.

While they were there, an elderly poor woman tried to enter Rashid's house to meet him and reportedly seek financial help, but was stopped by the security guards posted at the gate.

The woman started crying upon being refused entry, Aqib told DawnNewsTV. Hearing the commotion, Rashid stepped out of his home and after a reported exchange of words, the AML leader allegedly shoved the woman away.

Rashid then turned towards Aqib, who was recording the incident through his cellphone's camera a few feet away. He allegedly snatched the phone from Aqib and slammed it onto a concrete block, the cameraman claimed.

No complaint has been filed with the police regarding the incident by the woman or the cameraman.

Meanwhile,
...back at the game, the Babe headed for second base. He almost made it. Then Sheila slapped him....
Rashid while talking to DawnNewsTV denied manhandling the woman or damaging the cameraman's phone.

Israel green lights over 1,000 settlement homes, hundreds more to be marketed
[IsraelTimes] The Defense Ministry committee responsible for authorizing settlement construction advances plans for over 1,000 homes in the West Bank, with hundreds more expected to be marketed in the coming days.

Of the 1,002 homes green-lighted by the Civil Administration’s High Planning subcommittee, 382 gain final approval for construction while 620 clear an earlier planning stage known as a "deposit."

The Defense Ministry is also slated to approve hundreds of homes for "marketing," an extra stage required for projects in larger settlements. According to a Civil Administration official, these projects include ones in Alfei Menashe east of Kfar Saba and Ma’ale Efraim in the Jordan Valley.

Earlier in August, over 500 homes were approved for marketing in the Beit Aryeh settlement, southeast of Rosh Ha’ayin.

Among the plans advanced for deposit is a project for 370 homes in the central West Bank settlement of Adam, where Yotam Ovadia was stabbed to death in a terror attack last month.

After the incident, Defense Minister Avigdor Liberman announced he would be advancing a plan for hundreds of homes to be built in the settlement. While he did not say so explicitly, he was referring to the already existing plan advanced today.

US, UK, France pledge to act against new Syria chemical attacks
[ARABNEWS] The US, Britannia and La Belle France vowed on the fifth anniversary of a chemical weapons attack that they blame on the Syrian government to take action as they have in the past against any further attacks by Bashir al-Assad’s regime.

A joint statement issued late on Tuesday called the Aug. 21, 2012 sarin nerve gas attack that killed hundreds of people in the Ghouta suburb of Damascus "horrific." The use of sarin led to a US-Russian agreement to eliminate Assad’s chemical weapons, which averted US military strikes against Syria.

Since then, the three Western powers have accused Syria of resorting to the use of chemical weapons during military offensives in Khan Sheikhoun, Ltamenah, Saraqeb and Douma. Following the suspected chemical attack in Douma in April, the US, UK, and La Belle France launched punitive military strikes in Syria.

"As we have demonstrated, we will respond appropriately to any further use of chemical weapons by the Syrian regime, which has had such devastating humanitarian consequences for the Syrian population," the statement said.

The three governments implored Assad’s supporters "to recognize that the unchecked use of chemical weapons by any state presents an unacceptable security threat to all states."

The US, UK and La Belle France also expressed grave concern at reports of a Syrian government military offensive against civilians, schools, hospitals and other civilian infrastructure in the northern province of Idlib, the last major rebel-held bastion, and underlined "our concern at the potential for further ‐ and illegal ‐ use of chemical weapons."

"We remain resolved to act if the Assad regime uses chemical weapons again," the Western allies warned.

The 2012 US-Russia agreement required Syria to join the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW) and declare all its chemical weapons and precursors.

Saudi 'detains' Mecca imam who 'challenged mixed gatherings'
[Al Jazeera] Soddy Arabia
...a kingdom taking up the bulk of the Arabian peninsula. Its primary economic activity involves exporting oil and soaking Islamic rubes on the annual hajj pilgrimage. The country supports a large number of princes in whatcha might call princely splendor. When the oil runs out the rest of the world is going to kick sand in the Soddy national face...
has detained a prominent imam and preacher at the Grand Mosque in Mecca, activists said, after he reportedly delivered a sermon criticising mixed public gatherings.

The social media advocacy group Prisoners of Conscience, which monitors and documents arrests of Saudi preachers and religious scholars, said on Sunday that Sheikh Saleh al-Talib was placed in durance vile

after he delivered a sermon on the duty in Islam to speak out against evil in public.

Khaleej Online reported that in his sermon, Talib, who also serves as a judge in Mecca, derided the mixing of unrelated men and women at concerts and other mixed entertainment events.

While there was no direct criticism of the Saudi royal family in his speech, the kingdom has in recent months relaxed laws on female attendance at public events.

Saudi Arabia has yet to issue an official statement on the issue.

Hours after his reported arrest, both of al-Talib's Engish and Arabic Twitter accounts were deactivated.

Human Rights council commission to investigate recent violence on the Gazoo Strip border, has resigned for "personal reasons" less than a month after he was appointed, the council said on Wednesday.

Vojislav Suc, Slovenian ambassador to the UN in Geneva and president of the council, has accepted the resignation and will have the task of appointing a new president of the commission, which also includes lawyers Sara Hossein from Bangladesh and Betty Murungi from Kenya, an official statement said.

Crane, an expert in international law who is currently a professor at Syracuse University, is also a former prosecutor at the international court in Sierra Leone.

He was appointed on July 25 to investigate the recent violence on the Gazoo Strip border. Protests and festivities began on the border on March 30 and have continued at varying levels since then.

At least 171 Gazooks have been killed by Israeli fire during that time.

6 Takeaways About Paul Manafort And Michael Cohen's Legal Woes
[Mollie Hemingway at The Federalist] Former Trump campaign manager Paul Manafort was found by a jury to be guilty on eight fraud charges yesterday. At roughly the same time, former Trump attorney Michael Cohen pleaded guilty to five counts of personal income tax evasion, one count of making false statements to a financial institution to get a loan, and two counts related to illegal campaign contributions. Manfort’s case is being handled by Special Counsel Robert Mueller’s office. Mueller spun off the Cohen case to federal prosecutors with the Southern District of New York.

The special counsel was ostensibly appointed and given unlimited funds and wide-reaching powers to investigate allegations of treasonous collusion with Russia by President Trump to steal the 2016 election. It was the continuation of an FBI investigation into the Trump campaign that used human informants, wiretaps, national security letters, and other surveillance.

While no treasonous collusion between Russia and Trump has been unveiled despite two years of thorough investigation, the special counsel has rung up Trump associates for lying to the FBI, as well as various crimes unrelated to Trump or Russia. Mueller also indicted some Russian corporations for crimes related to low-level election meddling and Russian military intelligence officials for hacks of Democratic officials’ emails.

Here are six takeaways from yesterday’s news.

Rejected asylum seekers denied food in Hungary: HRW; Croatian police beat them at Bosnian border
[Al Jazeera] Hungarian authorities have stopped food distribution for rejected asylum seekers held in transit zones on the country's border with Serbia since early August, according to Human Rights Watch (HRW).

In a report published on Wednesday, HRW called for the Hungarian government to adhere to its legal obligations and ensure that all asylum seekers in jug are provided with sufficient and appropriate food.

"The government has stooped to a new inhumane low by refusing food to people in their custody, apparently revelling in breaching human rights
...which are often intentionally defined so widely as to be meaningless...
law, including its obligations as a European Union
...the successor to the Holy Roman Empire, only without the Hapsburgs and the nifty uniforms and the dancing...
member," said Lydia Gall, Eastern EU and Balkans researcher at HRW.

"This disregard for people's wellbeing smacks of a cynical move to force people to give up their asylum claims and leave Hungary".

Migrants in Bosnia complain of beatings by Croatian police

[AlAhram] Many refugees and migrants, some showing their cuts and bruises, accuse Croatian police of beating them before turning them back as they try to cross from Bosnia, an increasingly popular Balkan transit point as other borders into the European Union close.

Croatia, the EU's newest member, denies accusations its border police are rough handling would-be refugees fleeing war and poverty in Asia and North Africa to find a new life in mainstream Europe.

It dismisses reports of police brutality and says the Croatian border force is acting in line with international standards.

Many of the estimated 5,000 migrants camped near the border tell a different story, though.

"Croatia is a big problem," shouted a group of Pakistanis interviewed in the woods where they live in tents near the town of Bihac, each showing the cracked screens of their mobile phones which they say were damaged by Croatian police.

"The Croatian police, they see someone who is Arabic, a Muslim, and look what happened," said Mohammad, 40, from Gaza speaking in Italian, showing bruises on his back, arms and knees.

"Racist, racist Croats," said Mohammad whose goal is to reach Italy, where his wife and daughter live.

Bosnia, which itself went through a devastating war in the 1990s, is coping with a sudden influx of refugees and migrants. About 11,000 people from Asia and North Africa are registered as arriving so far this year.

The impoverished country was spared the refugee influx of 2015 and 2016, when more than one million refugees passed through the Balkans on their way to the European Union. But as borders have closed elsewhere, Bosnia has become a new transit route.

The migrants, most of them from Afghanistan, Iran, Syria and Pakistan, arrive from Serbia and Greece via Albania and Montenegro, according to the Bosnian authorities.

Although officials say 60 percent of those who have arrived have already left the country, volunteers and aid workers who help migrants say at least 5,000 people are stranded in Bosnia.

"Each day about 50 to 60 new people arrive, and I really don't know whether they will also leave the country," said Amira Hadzimehmedovic, a refugee camp manager for the International Organisation for Migrations in Bihac. "It's very, very difficult to give the correct numbers."

The bulk of them are concentrated in two northwestern towns, Bihac and Velika Kladusa, close to the border with Croatia. They live in poor conditions, squeezed into abandoned buildings and tent settlements scattered in the woods.

Most days they lie in makeshift camps, communing with their mobile phones or queuing for meals distributed by aid groups, waiting for their chance to continue their journey.

But neighbouring Croatia, which has a 1,000-kilometre long border with Bosnia, has sealed its borders and is sending back to Bosnia anyone they find with illegal status.

Afghan sentenced to life for stabbing teenage sister 28 times in Austria ‘honor’ killing
[IsraelTimes] An Austrian court sentences an Afghan man to life in prison for fatally stabbing his teenage sister 28 times in a so-called "honor" killing.

The man, in his early twenties, pleaded guilty to murdering his younger sister in September 2017. He received the maximum penalty.

The victim, who was aged around 17 or 18, had fled domestic violence at the hands of both her father and brother and sought refuge in a shelter when her brother found her and confronted her on her way to school.

The motive came from a "wrongheaded sense of honor that is not in line with the values of central European society," judge Stefan Apostol was quoted by Austrian news agency APA as saying.

The man, who came to Vienna in 2013, is appealing the sentence.

"I want to ask for forgiveness. I committed a crime," the perpetrator, who was not named, is quoted as saying in court, adding that he did it "because of the culture."
Not sorry he did it, but should go free because it’s the fault of his culture. Feh. Send him back to his culture without the ability to pass it on.

Russia says over 63,000 troops have fought in Syria
[IsraelTimes] Russia has sent over 63,000 troops to Syria over the course of its involvement in the conflict, the Russian defence ministry says.

A total of 63,012 Russian personnel have "received combat experience" in the war-torn country, the ministry says in a video about Russia’s campaign to support the Syrian regime dating back to September 2015.

This number includes 25,738 ranking officers and 434 generals as well as 4,349 artillery and rocket specialists, it says.

Previously Russian Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu said in December 2017 that over 48,000 military personnel had taken part in the Syrian campaign.

Immigrant Watch: MS-13 gang member, in US illegally, pleads guilty in brutal quadruple killing
[FoxNews] An illegal immigrant and member of the MS-13 gang faces a life sentence after pleading guilty Monday to taking part in the vicious massacre of four young men on New York's Long Island, in a case that was highlighted by President Trump.

Josue Portillo, 17, but charged as an adult, pleaded guilty in federal court to racketeering charges and for his participation in the April 2017 murders of Justin Llivicura, Michael Lopez Banegas, Jefferson Villalobos and Jorge Tigre in the woods behind a Central Islip, N.Y., soccer field, prosecutors claim. He’s now facing up to life in prison when he is sentenced Jan. 10.

The case was emphasized by President Trump in May at an event on Long Island, the epicenter of MS-13 gang killings in the country, to push for tighter immigration controls, which included the families of the three of the four slain men, the New York Times reported.

Portillo admitted that he planned the murders with other members of the notorious gang, whose motto is “Kill, rape, control.” They believed the four men were rival gang members. The victims were then lured to the woods and attacked with machetes, knives and clubs.

The prosecutors said Portillo entered the U.S. illegally from El Salvador. Many of the MS-13 members are from El Salvador and Honduras, with many of them coming into the country illegally. Increasingly, however, the gang is recruiting young teenagers who were born in the U.S.

The killer was only 16 at the time of the murders and the authorities initially charged him as a juvenile together with other members and associates of the gang, according to the Times. But the judge decided Portillo should be tried as an adult, saying the teen was charged with “four heinous, premeditated murders” and posed a danger to the community.

, called on Moslems to wage "jihad" in a purported new audio recording released on Wednesday.

The Telegram message on the occasion of Eid al-Adha is the first known to be released since another was broadcast in September last year, and comes as IS has lost most of its territory in Iraq and Syria.

"Those who forget their religion, patience, jihad against their enemies, and their certainty in the creator’s promise lose and are disgraced," the leader said.

"But when they hold on to it, they are mighty and victorious, even if after a certain time."

Baghdadi has been pronounced dead on several occasions, but an Iraqi intelligence official said in May that he remains alive in Syrian territory by the Iraqi border.

Baghdadi was said to move around with only a small group of followers.

Originally from Iraq, Baghdadi has been dubbed the "most wanted man on the planet" and the United States is offering a $25 million reward for his capture.

The Iraqi official said the noose was closing around the jihadist leader after Iraqi forces captured five top IS commanders in an unprecedented raid in Syria on March 24.

In September 2017, in the last voice message attributed to Baghdadi, the IS leader called on his fighters in Syria and Iraq to "resist" their enemies.

German police arrest Russian man over alleged terror bomb plot
[IsraelTimes] Suspect with ties to Berlin Christmas market attack allegedly intended to 'maim or kill the greatest possible number of people'

German police commandos tossed in the clink
I ain't sayin' nuttin' widdout me mout'piece!
Wednesday a Russian suspected Islamic terrorist accused of having plotted an explosives attack in the country.

Identified only as 31-year-old Magomed-Ali C., he was allegedly an accomplice of Clement Baur, who was arrested in Marseilles shortly before the 2017 French elections accused of plotting an imminent attack.

The Russian man "is suspected of having plotted, together with Clement B., detained in La Belle France, a serious act of violence against the state," German federal prosecutors said in a statement.

Commandos of the elite police unit GSG 9 stormed the man’s Berlin apartment in an operation which prosecutors said was linked to the Baur case.

"No explosives were found during today’s search operations," federal prosecutors’ spokeswoman Frauke Koehler said.

Baur and another suspect, who had both pledged allegiance to the Islamic State
...formerly ISIS or ISIL, depending on your preference. Before that al-Qaeda in Iraq, as shaped by Abu Musab Zarqawi. group, were arrested in April 2017 in a Marseilles apartment.
That would be his Sequedin prison buddy, Mahiedine Merabet...
French police found an IS flag, a loaded Uzi sub-machine gun, two pistols, a homemade grenade and TATP, a volatile explosive dubbed "mother of Satan."

The German prosecutors said that Magomed-Ali C. and Baur planned an explosives attack "at an unknown location in Germany, meant to maim or kill the greatest possible number of people."

For this purpose, Magomed-Ali C. had kept in his Berlin flat "a substantial amount" of TATP since at least October 2016.

However their plan was foiled by an unspecified German "preventive police operation," which led the accomplices to split up and Baur to travel to La Belle France, said the prosecutors.

TERROR CONNECTION
Prosecutors added Wednesday that a phone number used by Baur had been found saved in a mobile phone belonging to Anis Amri, the perpetrator of a December 2016 truck rampage at a Berlin Christmas market that left 12 people dead.

"We now know that Anis Amri was in contact with Clement B.," prosecutors’ spokeswoman Koehler said.

What’s more, Amri and Magomed-Ali C. both regularly visited a Berlin mosque known as Fussilet 33 that authorities later closed down over fears it was a meeting place for terrorists.
According to the BBC, the mosque was a hub for Chechen extremists.
However,
a person who gets all wrapped up in himself makes a mighty small package...
Koehler added there was "no indication" either that Magomed-Ali C. and Baur were involved in planning the truck attack, or that Amri helped them with their explosives scheme.

Since the Christmas market rampage ‐ Germany’s bloodiest in recent years ‐ the country has been targeted repeatedly by attacks with radical Islamist motives.

Top Trump aide turns the screw on Tehran
[ARABNEWS] A top aide to the US president launched a withering attack on Iran on Wednesday, ramping up the diplomatic pressure already applied by Donald Trump
...New York real estate developer, described by Dems as illiterate, racist, misogynistic, and what ever other unpleasant descriptions they can think of, elected by the rest of us as 45th President of the United States...
Sanctions are devastating the economy, public opinion is turning against the regime and Iranian forces need to leave Syria, National Security Adviser John Bolton said. "Regime change in Iran is not American policy, but what we want is massive change in the regime’s behavior," said Bolton, who before taking office advocated regime change in Iran.

Bolton said he believed Trump’s decision in May to withdraw from the 2015 nuclear deal between Iran and world powers, followed by the reimposition of sanctions, was having a stronger effect than expected on pressuring Tehran.

The nuclear deal had allowed Tehran to finance Lion of Islam activity in the region after the lifting of sanctions. The return of US sanctions was having a strong effect on Iran’s economy and popular opinion, Bolton said on a visit to Israel.

US sanctions reimposed this month targeted Iran’s car industry, trade in gold and other precious metals, and purchases of US dollars crucial to international financing and investment and trade relations. Farther-reaching sanctions are to follow in November on Iran’s banking sector and oil exports. "By bringing the hammer down again of reimposing American sanctions, we’ve seen a profound negative effect on Iran ‐ I think actually more serious than we would have predicted," Bolton said.

"I think the effects, the economic effects certainly, are even stronger than we anticipated.

"But Iranian activity in the region has continued to be belligerent ‐ what they are doing in Iraq, what they are doing in Syria, what they are doing with Hezbollah in Leb, what they are doing in Yemen, what they have threatened to do in the Strait of Hormuz.

"There should not be any doubt that the United States wants this resolved peacefully, but we are fully prepared for any contingency that Iran creates."

European powers have been scrambling to ensure Iran secures enough economic benefits to persuade it to stay in the deal. This has proven difficult, with many European firms keen to avoid financial penalties by the Trump administration.

Morocco king pardons 188 people linked to Hirak protests
[ARABNEWS] Morocco’s King Mohammed VI has pardoned a total of 188 people linked to the "Hirak" protest movement on the occasion of Eid al-Adha, the National Council on Human Rights said on Tuesday.

The council initially reported that royal pardons had been granted to 11 activists serving sentences of two to three years in prison for their part in the al-Hirak al-Shaabi, or "Popular Movement" whose protests rocked the northern Rif region in 2016-2017.

The other pardons concern people sentenced in connection with the demonstrations in the region, according to the Moroccan press.

It was not immediately possible to get confirmation from the Justice Ministry, which published the list of people granted royal pardons.

The social unrest linked to Hirak began in October 2016 after the death of a fisherman and spiralled into a wave of protests demanding more development in the neglected Rif region and railing against corruption and unemployment.

Taliban plan to attend Afghan talks in Moscow, says Russia
[DAWN] Russia said on Tuesday that the Taliban

had accepted an invitation for talks next month, in what promises to be one of the bully boy group’s biggest diplomatic forays since the 2001 US-led invasion.

The announcement of the planned talks comes as the Taliban have expanded their footprint across Afghanistan and launched an unrelenting wave of attacks, including a prolonged assault on Ghazni, a strategic city near Kabul, earlier this month.

Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said Moscow invited the Taliban to the Sept 4 talks and was hoping for "productive" negotiations. "The first reaction was positive, they are planning to take part in the meeting," he added.

There was no immediate comment from the Taliban.

The Grand Turk
US pastor’s lawyer plans appeal to Turkish constitutional court
[ARABNEWS] The lawyer for the American Christian pastor on trial for terrorism charges in The Sick Man of Europe Turkey
...the only place on the face of the earth that misses the Ottoman Empire....
said on Wednesday he planned to appeal to the constitutional court to seek Andrew Brunson’s release after being rejected by a lower court last week.

Brunson is at the center of a row between Turkey and the US, which has exacerbated a crisis in Turkey’s lira and reverberated across global markets.

The evangelical pastor, who has lived in Turkey for two decades, has been detained for 21 months on terrorism charges, which he denies. He is under house arrest.

"Once the upper court’s rejection has been confirmed in writing we will apply to the constitutional court," lawyer Ismail Cem Halavurt said in comments reported by Turkey’s Hurriyet newspaper that he confirmed to Rooters.

Once domestic legal avenues are exhausted, if necessary the defense would then apply to the European Court of Human Rights (ECHR), he said.

"We are hopeful regarding the constitutional court, but if it is rejected there, we will go to the ECHR without hesitation," he said.

The court in Turkey’s Izmir province which last week rejected the appeal said evidence was still being collected and the pastor posed a flight risk, according to a copy of the court ruling seen by Rooters.

Abdulkadir Selvi, a Hurriyet newspaper columnist close to the government, likened the constitutional court appeal plan to the case of journalist Mehmet Altan, who took a similar course of action and was released in June after being tossed in the clink
Please don't kill me!
on charges of aiding coup plotters.

Brunson is accused of terrorism charges and aiding the network of a US-based Islamic preacher blamed by Ankara for criminal masterminding a coup attempt in July 2016 against President Tayyip Erdogan.

In an interview with Rooters on Monday, US President Donald Trump
...New York real estate developer, described by Dems as illiterate, racist, misogynistic, and what ever other unpleasant descriptions they can think of, elected by the rest of us as 45th President of the United States...
said he would give Turkey no concessions in return for the release of Brunson. Ankara has not responded to Trump’s comments.

India-Pakistan
Karachi man sentenced to 10 years in jail for collecting funds for TTP
[DAWN] An antiterrorism court has sentenced a convict to 10 years in jail for collecting funds for Talibs and their wings fighting security agencies in Mohmand Agency
... Named for the Mohmand clan of the Sarban Pahstuns, a truculent, quarrelsome lot. In Pakistain, the Mohmands infest their eponymous Agency, metastasizing as far as the plains of Peshawar, Charsadda, and Mardan. Mohmands are also scattered throughout Pakistan in urban areas including Karachi, Lahore, and Quetta. In Afghanistan they are mainly found in Nangarhar
The unfortunate Afghan province located adjacent to Mohmand, Kurram, and Khyber Agencies. The capital is Jalalabad. The province was the fief of Younus Khalis after the Soviets departed and one of his sons is the current provincial Taliban commander. Nangarhar is Haqqani country..
and Kunar...

.

Ismail Khan was charged with collecting funds for the Tehrik-e-Taliban
...the Pashtun equivalent of men...
Pakistain faction.

The ATC-X judge, who conducted trial in judicial complex inside the Central Jail Bloody Karachi
...formerly the capital of Pakistain, now merely its most important port and financial center. It is among the largest cities in the world, with a population of 18 million, most of whom hate each other and many of whom are armed and dangerous...
, pronounced his verdict after recording evidence and final arguments from both sides.

The judge observed that the prosecution proved its charges against the detained accused beyond a shadow of a doubt and convicted him under Section 11-F(6) and 11-W(2) of the Anti-Terrorism Act, 1997.

The judge awarded him a sentence of five-years rigorous imprisonment in each section with a fine of Rs100,000. On default, Khan was ordered to undergo additional six-month rigorous imprisonment. Both sentences will run concurrently.

The Counter-Terrorism Department officials, on a tip-off about presence of a man belonging to proscribed outfit Tehrik-e-Taliban Pakistain, tossed in the clink
Drop the rod and step away witcher hands up!
Hazrat Khan at the Numaish Chowrangi on January 31.

During his search, the officials recovered two receipt books printed with ’Chanda Barae Mujahideen Lawahiqeen Aal Saafi Mohmand Welfare Association, Karachi, Sindh’, from him.

According to the prosecution, the detained man disclosed during interrogation that he had been collecting alms with the connivance of his accomplice Aurangzeb Mohmand and collected Rs8,600 each from 18 persons.

He further disclosed that his other accomplice had left for Mohmand Agency along with the collected alms for providing aid to the TTP’s Qari Shakeel Group. He was booked under the Section 11-F(6) and 11-W(2) read with the Section 7 of the Anti-Terrorism Act, 1997.

Section 11-F relates to membership, support and meetings related to a proscribed organization and sub-section (6) provides that "a person guilty of an offence under sub-sections (3),(4), and (5) shall be liable on conviction to a term of imprisonment, not less than one year and not more than five years and a fine".

Section 11-W pertains to printing, publishing or disseminating any material to incite hatred or giving projection to any person convicted for a terrorist act or any proscribed organization or an organization placed under observation or anyone concerned in terrorism.

Sub-section 2 provides that "any person guilty of an offence under sub-section (1) shall be punishable on conviction with imprisonment which may extend to five years and with fine."

During the trial, defence counsel Shahzad Abdullah argued that the accused was arrested by the law enforcement agency on December 12, 2017, but he was sent to the higher authorities after a delay of 10 days. He added that the father of his client had moved an application to the high-ups regarding alleged detention of his son.

The court found nothing on record to suggest the fate of such application and as to whether any inquiry was held or any adverse action was taken in this regard at any forum concerned.

The prosecution argued that the police record showed that the detained accused remained involved in other cases and was a hardened and desperate person/criminal.

Kashmir parties support India-Pakistan talks
[DAWN] Major political parties and the Hurriyat Conference in India-held Kashmire have expressed support for a Kashmire-centric dialogue between India and Pakistain, welcoming the intent for "constructive engagement" expressed by the former and "uninterrupted dialogue" by the latter, The Hindu said on Tuesday.

It said Mirwaiz Umar Farooq, chairman of the All Parties Hurriyat Conference, described Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s letter to Prime Minister Imran Khan
... aka Taliban Khan, who is the lightweight's lightweight...
and Foreign Minister Shah Mehmood Wormtongue Qureshi’s remarks of "uninterrupted dialogue on Kashmir" as "a positive development".

"It reflects new positivity. We hope that the channels of communication will remain open to build trust. It is in the interest of Kashmire and also in the interest of the entire region if the two countries come closer and resolve the long-pending Kashmire dispute," he told The Hindu.

The Mirwaiz, who is a part of the Joint Resistance Leadership along with Syed Ali Shah Geelani and Yasin Malik
...chairman of one of the two factions of Jammu Kashmir Liberation Front. JKLF is a Kashmiri nationalist organization founded in Birmingham, UK in 1977. Branches weren't actually established in Kashmir for another ten years. It has the usual demands for separation of J&K from secular India so it can become an independent Islamic rathole. It seems to have no interest in Pak Kashmir breaking away to join it. In 1994 Malik renounced violence after he was released from jail and from that point he and his organization pursued peaceful means to impose their will on the region...
, hinted at holding a meeting of various leaders over the latest engagement between India and Pakistain. Kashmire, he said, was a complex issue, and Pakistain had rightly suggested an uninterrupted dialogue.

"The dialogue is the need of the hour. We always support any such initiatives," he said. The Mirwaiz, however, was quick to add that India needed to show reciprocity and "change its current military approach in Kashmire to a political one".

Peoples Democratic Party leader Naeem Akhtar said the two countries had made an encouraging beginning by speaking of talks. "We hope the new government in Pakistain walks the talk and gets adequate response from this side too. Jammu and Kashmire is directly hit by the hostility between the two countries and the progress in the region is held hostage to security concerns. We expect a serious dialogue to follow up the statements," he said.

-Lurid Crime Tales-
What to Make of the Cohen Plea and Manafort Convictions
[National Review] Analyzing the guilty plea of Trump’s onetime personal lawyer and the conviction of his former campaign chairman.

Who would have thought that the conviction of his former campaign manager would be the good news for President Trump yesterday?

From a political standpoint, the guilty plea of the president’s lawyer Michael Cohen is the more damaging news. Cohen pled guilty to eight felonies. While the five counts of failure to pay taxes on over $4 million in income are the most consequential to him, most significant to the country are two counts of illegal "in kind" campaign contributions. These, of course, involve $280,000 in hush-money payments made prior to the 2016 election to two women who claim to have had sexual liaisons with Donald Trump, many years before. In entering his guilty plea in Manhattan federal court (the Southern District of New York), Cohen acknowledged that he was directed to make the payments by Donald Trump ‐ referred to as "the candidate."

Let’s split some legal hairs. The media narrative suggests that these payments violate federal law because they were made to influence the outcome of the election. That is not quite accurate. It was not illegal to pay hush money to the two women ‐ Karen McDougal and Stephanie Clifford (a.k.a. "Stormy Daniels"). It was illegal for Michael Cohen to make in-kind contributions (which is what these pay-offs were) in excess of the legal limit.

Specifically, it was illegal for Michael Cohen to make contributions exceeding $2,700 per election to a presidential candidate (including contributions coordinated with the candidate); and illegal for the candidate to accept contributions in excess of that amount. It was also illegal for corporations to contribute to candidates (including expenditures coordinated with the candidate), and for the candidate to accept such contributions. The latter illegality is relevant because Cohen formed corporations to transfer the hush money.

#1  If Trump reimbursed Cohen out of his own personal funds then there was no violation unless the payments of blackmail are illegal. Actually, it is asking for blackmail that is illegal.
A payment to a third person is a campaign contribution only if it is entirely for campaign purposes.
Since non politicians including one in current headlines has paid blackmail, one can only claim that these payments were not made at all for personal reasons, which requires reading the President's mind.
Intelligent human beings decide matters by weighing the factors in favor against those against those opposed. Since there are non-political factors in favor, the law cannot be violated.

Afghanistan
Kabul Attackers Stationed Near ARG 'Three Days Ahead Of Attack'
[ToloNews] A day after rocket attack near Afghanistan’s Presidential Palace, also known as ARG, sources said the attackers were stationed in Sarai Maahi, a market near Eidgah Mosque in PD1 of Kabul, three days before the attack.

The sources who wished not to be named in this report said the attackers were carrying a big number of light and heavy weapons and were speaking in Farsi and Arabic.

According to Resolute Support front man Lt. Colonel Martin O’Donnell, nine turbans had been involved in the attack and that at least 30 mortar rounds were fired at areas around the Presidential Palace.

But the question which is widely asked is that the turbans managed to infiltrate one of the heavily-guarded areas in the capital city near the Presidential Palace and the Defense Ministry building?

Several rockets landed in Kabul city early on Tuesday morning when President Ashraf Ghani
...former chancellor of Kabul University, now president of Afghanistan. Before returning to Afghanistan in 2002 he was a scholar of political science and anthropology. He worked at the World Bank working on international development assistance. As Finance Minister of Afghanistan between July 2002 and December 2004, he led Afghanistan's attempted economic recovery until the Karzais stole all the money. ..
was addressing a ceremony on Eid al-Adha. Despite the sounds of at least four rockets in the background, President Ghani kept his cool and continued his speech by saying that turbans could not stop the people from improvement by such attempts.

The rocket attack started at about 9am Kabul time.

Eyewitnesses said the attackers were coming to the area every day and were spending their nights there.

"It is the responsibility of the relevant organizations to say that how this vehicle entered the city," said Omar, an eyewitness.

"One person was standing there, another near the shrine and several others in front of the shop," said Massoud, an eyewitness.

Abdul Karim, a vendor in Kabul, said he lives along with five others in the market from where the attack was carried out.

The market is used for storing fishes during winters. In summers, it is used for other purposes including a parking for cards and rooms for rent for workers who have come to Kabul from other provinces. At least 15 vehicles were inside the market when the attack happened. All except two of them have been heavily damaged in the incident.

Karim said the attackers took them hostage after he and his friends returned from Eid prayers on Tuesday morning, but he said they were released after one hour.

"One of them (attackers) said that kill them, the other one said no. They pulled us on the ground to kill, then took us to a room and then released us," said Karim.

The attack has posed harms to a school and some houses in the area.

"They hit my shop with rocket. It is burnt," said Ahmad Gul, a shopkeeper.

"This is my car which has caught fire in the attack. So far no one has come to ask about cars in this market," said Fida Mohammad, a schoolteacher.

The battle between government forces and the attackers ended after three hours. Afghan forces used combat helicopters to eliminate the attackers.

A military expert said the attack on a secure area in Kabul indicates the intelligence failure of the country’s security agencies.

"First, this is the failure of intelligence forces. Secondly, there is a possibility of contact between these individuals with security personnel. It is not beyond these two circumstnacces," said Sayas, a military analyst.

CNN's April Ryan says Sarah Sanders 'stirred up' threats against her, should pay for Ryan's bodyguard
Actions have consequences, Bitch
[FoxNews] CNN’s April Ryan said White House press secretary Sarah Sanders should pay for a bodyguard Ryan has hired, accusing Sanders of "stirring" up death threats against Ryan.

"Oh, I get approached a lot, when I'm walking from my car, when I'm walking to my car, when I eat. Anywhere I go. I mean, they have put a target on my head, and I don't know who's who sometimes," Ryan told the Hollywood Reporter on Tuesday.

"I've had death threats. I've had craziness. ... Do I have a bodyguard? Yes, I do. Am I paying for it? Yes, I am. And, I think [Sanders] should have to pay for it, especially if she's stirring it up with her boss," she added.
Ryan, who's also the White House correspondent for American Urban Radio Networks, made the comments as she was promoting her new book, "Under Fire: Reporting from the Front Lines of the Trump White House," which details her experience covering the Trump administration.

"What's happening is unprecedented. ... I've been under attack. And lied on. Treated terribly. And if I don't tell the story, you won't get it. So, I'm putting it out there, because people see one side of it," she said, though not revealing why none of her employers are footing for the bill for her personal security.

Ryan insists the White House put her on a "blacklist" over her questions during press briefings, claiming the administration was "still very angry" over Ryan once asking Trump whether he is a racist.

"The asshole list blacklist. The White House blacklist ... Me, [CNN chief White House correspondent] Jim Acosta. We're on the blacklist. [CNN White House correspondent] Kaitlan Collins. People they don't like," Ryan added.

Europe
Immigrant Watch: Sweden rape: Most convicted attackers foreign-born
[BBC] About 58% of men convicted in Sweden of rape and attempted rape over the past five years were born abroad, according to data from Swedish national TV.

Public broadcaster SVT said it had counted all court convictions to present a complete picture in Sweden.

But Sweden had thousands more reported rapes, and there is no ethnic breakdown for those.

Immigration and crime are major issues in Sweden's general election campaign. The vote is on 9 September.

The anti-immigration Sweden Democrats hope to make significant ground, although they have slipped to third place in the latest opinion poll.

The Mission Investigation programme, due to be broadcast on Wednesday by SVT, said the total number of offenders over five years was 843. Of those, 197 were from the Middle East and North Africa, with 45 coming from Afghanistan.

The SVT programme revealed that in cases where the victim did not know the attacker, the proportion of foreign-born offenders was more than 80%.

The latest opinion poll on Wednesday suggests the populist party's support has dipped in recent weeks to just over 19% in the polls, but it is still on course for its best performance yet. The Social Democrats are leading the polls while the Moderates are just ahead of the anti-immigration SD.

Sri Lanka to end execution moratorium soon, but will send 5 Pakistanis on death row home
[DAWN] Sri Lanka will soon resume executions after a 42-year moratorium but will send home five Paks sentenced to death for drug smuggling for execution in their home country, President Maithripala Sirisena said on Wednesday.

The five are among 18 people, including a woman, on death row for drug offences whose execution will go ahead, according to Sirisena. He did not give a date for the first hanging.

"I am determined to carry out the death penalty
for serious drug offenders and I will start with a list (of 18) given to me by the prisons," he told a public meeting in the north of the country.

Sirisena said he would hold talks with new Prime Minister Imran Khan
... aka Taliban Khan, who is the lightweight's lightweight...
on repatriating the condemned Paks and having them executed there. He gave no further details on the feasibility of such a move.

International rights groups and the European Union
...the successor to the Holy Roman Empire, only without the Hapsburgs and the nifty uniforms and the dancing...
have asked Sri Lanka to reconsider since Sirisena announced last month that he wanted to end the moratorium on hanging.

PM Khan reminds nation of the real meaning of sacrifice in Eid message
[DAWN] Prime Minister Imran Khan
... aka Taliban Khan, who is the lightweight's lightweight...
congratulated the nation on the celebration of Eidul Azha and urged his countrymen to remember the sacrifices made for the protection, reconstruction and development of Pakistain, Radio Pakistain reported on Wednesday.

According to the report, the prime minister also urged people "not to forget those who are deprived in this hour of happiness".

Prime Minister Khan reminded the nation that sacrifice "is a universal devotion without which no nation can progress".

In his Eidul Azha message, President Mamnoon Hussain said today’s sacrifice commemorates the obedience and unparalleled examples set by the great prophets of Islam.

He said this Eid should remind Paks to sacrifice their egos, which is the key factor behind numerous problems.

Chief of Army Staff General Qamar Javed Bajwa also conveyed Eid wishes to the nation through the Inter-Services Public Relations, saying: "May Allah Almighty bless our motherland [with] peace and prosperity."
