Kirsten Gillibrand Unveils A PX/BX Post Office Public Option For Banking
[HuffPoo] Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand (D-N.Y.) is introducing legislation Wednesday that would require every U.S. post office to provide basic banking services, an ambitious step aimed at improving the lives of Americans with limited financial resources.
The gov't can go a long way to "improving my life" by simply staying out of it !
The bill brings to Congress for the first time a policy idea that has already won the support of liberal economists and anti-poverty activists: Turning the nation’s sprawling network of U.S. Postal Service facilities into places where working-class and low-income Americans who lack adequate access to commercial banking can obtain low-cost, short-term loans. Sens. Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass.) and Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) have both spoken out in favor of postal banking, but Gillibrand is the first to introduce legislation mandating it.

The central goal of the bill is to replace risky financial products like payday loans, which can trap borrowers in prolonged cycles of debt, with regulated alternatives.

"This is a solution to take on payday lenders, to take on the problems that the unbanked have all across the country. It’s a solution whose time has come," Gillibrand said in an interview with HuffPost.

To hear Gillibrand and other postal banking proponents tell it, the Postal Service and underbanked Americans are the perfect complements.

The postal system’s 30,000 locations touch every community. A majority ― 59 percent ― are in so-called banking deserts, or zip codes that have either no bank branches or just one.
Government banking? Now why didn't I think of that? What could possibly go wrong ?
Launching a postal banking system would require startup funding that could either be obtained through a loan from the treasury or a congressional appropriation. Gillibrand’s staff plans to seek an estimate of the cost from the Congressional Budget Office.
"Requires start-up funding"..... Absolutely shocking !
A postal banking system could be a major boon to the financially strained Postal Service. If even 10 percent of the money Americans currently spend on interest and fees for risky financial products went toward postal banking loans that cost 90 percent less, the Postal Service would gain almost $9 billion in annual revenue, according to a 2014 study conducted by the Postal Service Inspector General.

"It is really an elegant solution," said Gillibrand, who emphasized that benefits to the postal system, though significant, were a secondary consideration. "You have a system that already works. And you have the ability to let the unbanked have banking in a way that’s affordable."
"Elegant solution".... that would be email and on-line bill payments vs cards and letters. You familiar with electronic mail Kriston? Tell me, how many letters, birthday cards or Christmas greeting cards did you get last year ?

#1  Failing Postal Service made even larger? The 'company store' solution. Gov't milk, bread and bologna? Someone please tell me, WTF is wrong with these people in Washington ?

Yea, we used to sell postage stamps, but now we sell lotto cards, beer, and weed. Have you been waited on ?

They've got it arse backwards per usual. Put the Post Office back in the corner of an existing store like it was in the 1930's through the 1950's. Walmart and Target would probably provide rent-free space just to facilitate the buyer traffic.

As the USPS entitlement employees retire and die off, replace them with Walmart employees. They handle your prescriptions and drugs, why can't they handle the mail ?

#2  Failing Postal Service made even larger?

Well, if you look on it as a corporation, yes. If you look at it as a Constitutional mandate (Art.1, Sec 8), its working as intended. Banking was never its mandate.

You notice she's sticking USPS with it. Banking was/is a Treasury function. See Alexander Hamilton and the First Bank of the United States. Hamilton wasn't a Marxists. If we're going to bail banks out, better it would be the government's bank, not money institutions which are part time money laundering schemes for 'insurance' purchases.

SNAP Reform Will Send at Least Four Million New People to Work
[Freebeacon] Almost four-and-a-half million SNAP recipients would go to work under reforms currently making their way through Congress, estimates based on data from the Foundation for Government Accountability (FGA) show.

Proposed work requirements would cover about 12 million people according to FGA's data. There are approximately seven-and-a-half million SNAP recipients already working, meaning at least an additional four-and-a-half million who currently do not work would find themselves responsible for working, finding work, or taking advantage of federally funded education and training programs.

FGA's own estimates, offered to the Free Beacon, in fact peg the number higher, adding 7.8 million people to the workforce with new work requirements. This discrepancy is due to FGA's finding that not all able-bodied individuals enrolled in SNAP and working would be subject to the new work requirements. FGA's estimate deviates from the one given to the Free Beacon by experts on the House agriculture committee, who pinned the final total at between 5.5 and six million people.

These work requirements are part of a major overhaul of the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program‐often referred to as "food stamps"‐included in the most recent House agricultural bill.

Under current law, only a restricted group of SNAP recipients, about 8.8 percent, are expected to actively work or look for work. Under the proposed revision, any individual who is a) between the ages of 18 and 59, b) neither mentally nor physically disabled, and c) is not responsible for a child age six or under, would be obligated to spend 20 hours a week working, seeking work, or training.

FBI Delays Release of Communications With Firm That Examined DNC Servers
[Freebeacon] The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) has pushed back the estimated completion date of a Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) request for documents pertaining to its communications with the security firm that examined the Democratic National Committee's hacked servers to October.
New guy, same as old guy? Appears to be a much larger problem than previously indicated.
The Washington Free Beacon submitted the FOIA request in July 2017 with the FBI seeking all communication between the bureau and CrowdStrike, Inc., the California-based cyber security firm that examined the DNC's servers following the infiltration that led to the release of John Podesta's emails. The FBI said in December the documents should be available by March.

The FBI, which was never granted access to the DNC's servers for inspection, instead relied on the third-party firm that was brought in by the DNC for information regarding the compromised network who concluded that Russia was behind the hack.

The FBI previously awarded an unrelated $150,000 contract to CrowdStrike in July 2015. Details and communications between the firm and the bureau regarding that past contract were requested as part of the FOIA.

The request additionally sought all communications spanning from April 1, 2016‐one month before the firm was brought in by the DNC to analyze the servers‐and July 7, 2017, the day the FOIA request was submitted to the FBI.

After inquiring about the estimated completion date for the documents in early December, an FBI public information officer said requests are divided into two processing tracks: Simple, which are under 50 pages of potentially responsive documents, and complex, which are more than 50 pages of potentially responsive documents. Complex requests are further divided into medium, large, and extra-large sub-tracks based upon the request size.

Simple track requests are averaging approximately 80 days from the date of receipt for processing, the officer said. Requests in the large complex processing track are averaging 774 days for processing.

The Free Beacon request falls into the complex medium processing track and was given an estimated completion date of March 2018.

However, the documents were not made available in March. The Free Beacon again reached out to the records office.

A public information officer later left a message saying the estimated completion date is now October, seven months after the initial completion date.

#1  I believe we may have isolated at least a portion of the problem.

CrowdStrike has figured prominently in the Democratic National Committee cyber attacks and the attribution of those attacks to Russian intelligence services. On March 20, 2017 during testimony before congress, James Comey stated "CrowdStrike, Mandiant, and ThreatConnect review[ed] the evidence of the hack and conclude[d] with high certainty that it was the work of APT 28 and APT 29 who are known to be Russian intelligence services."[20] However, the FBI did not independently verify these findings because the DNC refused to give the FBI access to the server.[21]
Emphasis added.

How far along are you? Ten percent finished? Fine, send over your first ten percent Monday morning or the Director can find a new job. We'll need the balance within 30 days. How your copy? Over.

Russian from Trump Tower meeting: 'I am a lawyer, and I am an informant'
[The Hill] Natalia Veselnitskaya, the Russian lawyer who met with Donald Trump Jr. and others at Trump Tower during the 2016 presidential race, appears to have greater ties to the Russian government than she previously admitted.

The New York Times reports that Veselnitskaya in at least one instance worked for Russia’s chief legal office against the U.S. Justice Department in a fraud case targeting a top Russian firm with government connections.

And in an interview set to be broadcast Friday on "NBC Nightly News with Lester Holt" and on MSNBC's "On Assignment with Richard Engel," Veselnitskaya calls herself an "informant" for the Russian government, an admission that goes further than her previous claims of just being a private attorney.

"I am a lawyer, and I am an informant," she says in the NBC interview. "Since 2013, I have been actively communicating with the office of the Russian prosecutor general."

Lawmakers slam Trump's Homeland Security chief over focus on immigrant caravan, border wall
Washington (CNN) The secretary of homeland security faced sharp questioning about agency priorities from lawmakers on both sides of the aisle at a House Homeland Security Committee hearing Thursday, with many expressing deep concerns about whether the Trump administration is properly promoting Americans' safety.

Democrats in particular questioned Kirstjen Nielsen about the administration's prioritization of immigration enforcement and the building of a border wall while also seeking to cut funding for state and local governments to prepare for and respond to security threats.

"Tell us how cutting this kind of funding helps America be safer," demanded Rep. Bill Keating, D-Massachusetts.

The top Democrat on the committee, Mississippi Rep. Bennie Thompson, had sharp words for Nielsen in his opening remarks, accusing the department of intentionally attacking non-dangerous immigrants as a distraction.

Clapper Leaked The Dossier To CNN After Ordering Comey To Brief Trump (Update: Clapper Hired By CNN)
[Hot Air] Credit to Sean Davis at the Federalist for catching this today. The newly declassified report on Russia from the House Intel Committee states that Director of National Intelligence James Clapper was the person who leaked word of the dossier being briefed to Trump last January. From the report:
When initially asked about leaks related to the ICA in July 2017, former DNI Clapper flatly denied "discussing the dossier [compiled by Steele] or any other intelligence related to Russia hacking of the 2016 election with journalists." Clapper subsequently acknowledged discussing the "dossier with CNN journalist Jake Tapper," and admitted that he might have spoken with other journalists about the same topic. Clapper’s discussion with Tapper took place in early January 2017, around the time IC leaders briefed President Obama and President-elect Trump, on "the Christopher Steele information," a two-page summary of which was " enclosed in" the highly classified version of the ICA."

Why is that significant? Because according to James Comey, he briefed Trump on the salacious elements of the dossier specifically because he was aware that CNN and other outlets were looking for a "news hook" that would give them an excuse to get the dossier before the public. From Comey’s memo [emphasis added]:

Obama muddied the waters by making sure intelligence was shared among more agencies so it would be difficult to single out one agency and fire everyone involved in any misbehavior. Clapper used the same technique to make sure CNN couldn't be singled out as well.

Federal appeals court restores Texas voter-ID law
[Wash Times] A federal appeals court ruled Friday that Texas’s new version of its voter-ID law can go into effect, rebuking a lower court judge for trying to block the law and delivering a significant victory to voter-integrity advocates.

The original law passed earlier this decade had been blocked after the 5th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals concluded both its purpose and effect was to punish minority voters.

But the state legislature went back and made changes, and the 5th Circuit, in a 2-1 ruling, now says the new version cures what ailed the previous one.

Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton hailed the ruling.

"The court rightly recognized that when the Legislature passed Senate Bill 5 last session, it complied with every change the 5th Circuit ordered to the original voter ID law," he said. "Safeguarding the integrity of our elections is essential to preserving our democracy."

The new law includes a longer list of ID options that are acceptable for voting purposes, allows people to use expired identification for even longer and requires mobile dispensaries to dole out election identification documents to those who might not otherwise have a valid ID for voting purposes.

Analysis: Three Big Takeaways from Bret Baier's Thorough Grilling of James Comey
[Townhall] Fox News anchor Bret Baier (a colleague with whom I'm friendly) conducted a tour de force interview with fired FBI Director James Comey on Special Report last night, grilling Comey at length about a series of decisions and statements he made in connection to the Clinton email and Russia collusion investigations. Full video is available here and here. There was an enormous amount of substance tackled during the discussion, but a few exchanges jump out at me. (1) One back-and-forth was so striking that I tweeted about it during the program:

"What do you mean?" asks an incredulous Baier when Comey says he can't say for sure that the DNC and Clinton campaign funded the salacious dossier. Comey clarifies that he's only heard media reports to that effect, but can't be certain they're true. How is that possible? First of all, the provenance of that file, and who paid for it, has been an established fact for months. Comey was in an unique position to know basically everything about the dossier, upon which he at least partially relied (his answer on this point struck me as slippery and conflicts with other information) to secure surveillance on a former Trump campaign associate. He claims he knew it was furnished by people opposed to Donald Trump, but never knew their specific identities. Really? Either that's false or he was strangely and perhaps deliberately under-informed about key details behind a crucial oppo-research file that he exploited to achieve important investigative ends. As for his assertion that Steele's anti-Trump work was originally paid for by Republicans, this is a Democratic talking point that has long been debunked, as Baier notes. Conservative figures did employ Fusion GPS for a time to gather research on Trump, but they did not fund Steele or his dossier. As Byron York says, "given its importance in Trump-Russia probe and his own relationship with the president, James Comey's ignorance of some basic facts about the dossier is stunning."

#1  Upon reflection, I suspect it would be naive to assume Comey didn't have Bret's questions in hand well prior to the interview. Bret's questions were well rehearsed. I suspect Comey's answers were as well, or am I putting the man in....a bad light ?

Britain
The Alfie Evans story - Is Great Britain Still a Free Country?
[Townhall] Even as a steadfast critic of the UK's socialistic healthcare system, I'll happily admit to being a full-blown Anglophile. I adore our beloved cousins and close allies across the pond. I enjoy visiting the United Kingdom, from London to Birmingham to Edinburgh. I believe the "special relationship" between our two countries is a cornerstone of global security. I'm an avid consumer of British television shows, from the Bake Off to Broadchurch. And above all, I love the warm, clever, welcoming British people. Even their food has improved. So it genuinely pains me to be pondering this question over the last few days: Is Britain still a free country that values Western democratic values? Chief among those core principles are the protection of innocent human life, freedom of speech, freedom of expression, and free citizens' ability to go about their daily lives without undue or heavy-handed interference from government. While the Brits remain -- and should remain -- our close friends, and while our national interests still align in many ways, I cannot help but look on with sadness and occasional revulsion as the British State increasingly seems to regard and treat its citizens as subjects.

The people of the UK are still able to elect their leaders and impose dramatic changes, of course, so it would be a gross overstatement to liken their government (as some critics have) to a totalitarian regime. But a string of recent stories and incidents have raised serious fears in my mind about whether Great Britain is becoming something other than -- something less than -- a truly free country. I'll lay out a number of examples, and allow readers draw their own conclusions regarding that provocative proposition, starting with: (1) The appalling and inhumane treatment of Alfie Evans and his family.

Many Americans may recall the Charlie Gard case from 2017, wherein the parents of an ailing young boy were ordered by the government not to travel to the US to explore groundbreaking treatment for their son's extremely serious condition. After a protracted legal battle, the state prevailed. Young Charlie Gard was not permitted to leave Britain, care was ceased, and he died. A similar, grotesque saga featuring another terminally ill baby is playing out today:

#1  Alfie has died, once again proving how gloriously the NHS in England can kill small children. Since he was able to breathe without machines, they used the tried and true liverpool pathway and denied food and water.

I guess it's too much to hope for that the judges involved get hacked to death by jihadi's for denying the parents the ability to seek alternative care.

I have a kid and these things hit pretty hard. Plus, being descended from Appalachian mountain folk tends to make me...well, few people hold a grudge the way we do.

John Brennan Issues Warning to POTUS About Mueller's Investigation
[GP] Former CIA Director-turned-Twitter troll, John Brennan issued President Trump a warning Friday morning after the House Intel Panel released their much-anticipated Russia report, officially clearing Trump.

There was no Trump-Russia collusion. End the witch hunt now and start prosecuting all involved in the attempted coup.

Not only did the House Intel report clear Trump of any ’collusion’ with Russia, it revealed a group of wealthy donors spent $50 million to fund the Trump-Russia investigation.

A group of about 7-10 wealthy donors from California (Silicon Valley) and New York spent $50 million to fund a Trump-Russia investigation conducted by none other than Christopher Steele, Fusion GPS and a former staffer for Dem Senator Dianne Feinstein named Daniel Jones.

Democratic Donors Paid $50 million for New Anti-Trump Research
[Freebeacon] Anti-Trump researchers are continuing to conduct investigations of President Trump and were paid $50 million by unidentified donors in blue states, according to a House intelligence committee report made public on Friday.

The heavily redacted final report of the House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence said the panel is continuing to probe efforts by former British intelligence officer Christopher Steele, author of the discredited anti-Trump dossier, and the research firm FusionGPS that hired Steele on behalf of the Democratic National Committee and Clinton campaign during the election.

The continuing anti-Trump opposition research operation was contained in a footnote on page 113 of the 243-page report. It identified the Penn Quarter Group as the research firm that hired Steele and FusionGPS. [Disclosure: The Washington Free Beacon was once a client of Fusion GPS. That relationship ended in January 2017. For more information, see here.]

The footnote identified former Senate intelligence committee staff investigator Daniel J. Jones, head of the Penn Quarter Group (PQG), as leading the new anti-Trump campaign.

Jones and a spokesman for the Penn Quarter Group, that describes itself as a "research and investigative advisory," could not be reached for comment. An email sent to an address on the company's website was not returned.

Mother in New Mexico Dies After Battle with Rare Rodent-Borne Virus
[Breitbart] 27-year-old Kiley Lane leaves behind a daughter of two years ‐ the tragic ending to a prolonged battle with the vicious hantavirus.

When Lane first grew ill in January, she assumed it was just a terrible flu. Her husband Kevin urged her to get tested as her symptoms worsened, with nausea and stabbing pain in her stomach. But it was not until February and several diagnoses later that she was discovered to be carrying the hantavirus.

Hantavirus is a deadly disease, most often contracted from deer mice urine or feces. It is an exceptionally rare diagnosis, with only a little more than 700 cases recorded across 36 states in the U.S. More than one-third of the people who contract it die, and Lane was tragically added to its list of victims on April 20.

Lane’s struggles were posted on a YouCaring fundraising site created to help her family with the burden of this sudden expense. For a while, her loved ones were hopeful that treatments including the Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation (ECMO) machine would allow her to pull through. However, even the forefront of modern medicine was unable to save her life.

Don Surber: There is no right to be published, Never Trumpers
Never Trumpers were so clever two springs ago. Their plan was to sabotage Donald Trump's hard-won nomination. They would drink Chardonnay on Election Night, and re-take a shamed Republican Partythe next day.

Now they are struggling to have their Fake Conservative views published. And they blubber on and on about it.

Kevin D. Williamson whined in the Weekly Standard earlier about a magazine not publishing a column he had written -- for free.

Hilarious.

Dude, your work is less than worthless to them.

The latest is the story of layoffs at RedState because its owner isn't making money,

In the wake of Trump's Reagan-level success as president, columns promoting the Mueller witch hunt are not attracting legions of conservative readers. Son of a gun.

Erick Erickson from his spot in Never Trump exile, whined that the owner is picking and choosing who it wants to keep.

"My understanding from the writers is that there were two contracts, one more expensive than the other. Most of those on the expensive contracts were tossed, though some very good ones will stay. Of those under the cheaper contracts, it seems the dividing line was loyalty to the President. In fact, among those under the expensive contracts, I'm aware of some writers having near equal traffic generation, and those insufficiently loyal to the President were fired," Erickson wrote.

That's a nice liberal way of spinning non-conservative as "insufficiently loyal to the president."

Trump is the most conservative president since Reagan. If you are not on the Trump Train, then you are not conservative.

It is as simple as that.

I don't expect blind loyalty to the president, but I do expect support. He earned it.

Trump has appointed judges to the right of Bush choices, he has cut corporate taxes, he has cut personal taxes, he has rolled back onerous regulations, and he has de-nuked North Korea. Those are just the biggest of the big things that he has done as president.

Too many RedStaters refused to give him credit.

On March 15, Susan Wright at RedState wrote, "Protectionism, Bowling Balls and Every Crazy Thing Trump Said at a Recent Fundraising Event."

Gee, I wonder why conservatives shun the site.

I can get this sort of garbage from the Washington Post. She led with this: "It was supposed to be a fundraising speech. It spiraled into a seething pit of crazy. Probably the craziest of all the things President Trump boasted of in a 30-minute speech in Missouri on Wednesday was that he makes up facts. That’s right: He admitted that he makes up things and then presses those made-up facts as real."

In fact, in the next paragraph, Wright admitted she lifted this from the Post, "The Washington Post covered Trump’s tale of insisting that there was a trade deficit with Canada, while speaking to Justin Trudeau."

There is nothing wrong with using news stories to explain events. That is the mainstay of blogging.

And there is nothing wrong with knocking the president.

The problem is being fake about it and making false claims to being conservative.

Wright is not a conservative. She is a Jennifer Rubin wannabe.

I imagine there are others at the site who want an Ana Navarro gig on CNN as well. Now they can pursue those dreams, tiny as they are.

The owner of RedState is cutting personnel, which means bye-bye to its Counterfeit Conservatives.

Why isn't this a Trump Effect entry? Because RedState is repenting by driving the phonies from its site. The purification (some would say fumigation) protects RedState from the tragedy that befalls so many of those who foolishly feuded with The Donald.

Erickson is offering them space at his Fake Conservative site.

Maybe Williamson should look into that.

Royal Marines stage dramatic landing on Scottish shore as they take part in massive joint Nato exercise
[MAIL] Britain's elite forces are being pushed to their limits in Europe's biggest NATO military exercise to ensure they are equipped and deployment ready.

Operation Joint Warrior in Dalbeattie, Scotland, involves more than 11,600 military personnel from 17 nations, along with 35 naval units.

The UK's war chest has been raided as battlefield tech, ships and aircraft are sent in to showcase the nation's military prowess over two weeks.

Royal Marines have been spotted during a dramatic beach-landing as they dive from RHIB boats and deploy onto the shore in a war zone scenario.

NATO's bi-annual exercise is running from the 21st April to 4th May and involves forces from the US, Spain, Sweden, Denmark, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, the Netherlands.

The mission, operating out of Her Majesty's Naval Base Clyde and incorporating forces from RAF Lossiemouth in Moray, will see action taking place across air, land and sea.

The biannual exercise is designed, planned and delivered by the Joint Tactical Exercise Planning Staff (JTEPS) based at Northwood in London who deploy to HM Naval Base Clyde to coordinate events.

A Royal Navy statement said: 'Over the fortnight participants will be faced with a period of increasing political and military tensions, along with a huge range of realistic military tasks such as: intelligence gathering and reconnaissance; anti-smuggling and counter-terrorism operations; humanitarian assistance and evacuation operations.'

Bishops Urge Nigerian President to Resign for Failing to Protect Christians from Terrorism
[Breitbart] Catholic Bishops this week called on Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari to resign for failing to protect Christians from the deadly Moslem terrorist menace at the hands of the Fulani herdsmen gripping the African country.

The comments from the Catholic Bishops Conference of Nigeria came days after the April 24 attack by suspected murderous Moslem Fulani herdsmen that killed the 19 Christians, including two priests, during morning mass at the Catholic Church in the Ukpor-Mbalom community of the Gwer East Local Government Area in Nigeria’s Benue State.

Amid the ongoing carnage at the hands of the herdsmen, Christians have accused President Buhari, who shares ethnicity with the semi-nomadic Fulani group, of leniency towards the terrorists, Africa News reports.

In the wake of the April 24 massacre, the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) and other followers of Christ condemned the heinous attack.

The attack came a day after David Curry, the CEO of Open Doors USA, a group that monitors Christian persecution across the world, highlighted the "rising threat" against Christians posed by the terrorist Fulani herdsmen in comments to Breitbart News.

"Despite this rising threat [by murderous Moslem Fulani herdsmen] ... This is the conflict in Nigeria that no one is talking about," he said, echoing the president of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN).

The Catholic Bishops Conference accused Buhari of failing to keep Nigerians safe by ignoring festivities between the settled Christian farmers and the herdsmen that "have left hundreds dead," Africa News points out.

In a statement shared with various African news outlets, the Bishops describe the Fulani as a "wicked and inhuman gang of the rampaging and murderous terrorists, who have turned the vast lands of the Middle belt and other parts of Nigeria into a massive graveyard."

The Global Terrorism Index (GTI), repeatedly cited by the U.S. State Department, revealed last year that Fulani murderous Moslem herdsmen carried out more attacks and were responsible for more fatalities in Nigeria in 2016 than the Islamic State

In 2016, the index noted that Fulani snuffies had killed 60,000 people since 2001.

Open Doors USA points out, "In the last year alone, Fulani bandidos Death Eaters have razed more than 50 villages and over the last four months have killed now 516 Christians."

Consistent with reports from Open Doors, the Catholic Bishops noted that the attacks by Moslem terrorist Fulani herdsmen against Christians have intensified in recent months, declaring in the statement:

Since then, the bloodletting and the destruction of homes as well as farmlands have increased in intensity and brutality. Now our Churches have been desecrated and our people murdered on their altars. ... We collectively feel abandoned and betrayed.

Consistent with the position of other Christian groups, Rev. Ayokunle Olasupo, the CAN president, urged members of the religious minority in the African country to rise and defend themselves against the herdsmen.

Knife attacker kills 7 children, wounds 12 in China
[DAWN] At least seven students have been stabbed to death and 12 injured in a knife attack outside a school in northern China, BBC reported quoting officials.

The knife-wielding man attacked the students near a secondary school in Mizhi County in Shaanxi province as they were heading home for the day, officials were quoted as saying.

A suspect is said to be in police custody.

Photos on social media showed several young students lying on the floor, surrounded by shocked onlookers.

A local government statement said the attack happened at Mizhi County Number Three secondary school, at around 18:10 local time (10:10 GMT).

Their exact ages have not been given, but reports suggest they may be middle school children, which would make them aged 12 to 15, reported BBC.

Somalia considers integrating militias
The African Union Mission in Somalia (AMISOM) said Friday it has kicked off a two-day training on biometric registration for Somalia government staff to help spearhead the integration of pro-government militias into the national security forces.

The course which is being conducted by AMISOM Police is aimed at training officials from the ministry of internal security to acquire the necessary skills needed to register members of armed pro-government groups operating in Galmudug state in central Somalia.

“This particular exercise is being done to capacitate the officers to go to Galmudug state to also register the regional forces there,” Paul Kissi Frimpong, AMISOM Police Deputy Coordinator in charge of Reform, Restructuring, and Development said in a statement released in Mogadishu.

Frimpong said the pan African mission’s Police decided to train Somali officers to be part of the exercise after the Federal Government requested the AU Mission’s aid in registering the pro-government armed groups.

“Apart from the Somali National Army, some of these states have some security forces that have been supporting them to fight the al-Shabab. These forces are outside the SNA and (those are the ones) we are going to register,” he added.

Frimpong said the exercise was part of AMISOM’s plans to develop the capacity of the Somali national security forces to enable it to take over security responsibilities once AMISOM exits.

“We want to capacitate them (Somali officers), give them the skills to be able to assist in the ongoing exercise of registering the regional forces. As you are aware AMISOM is transitioning which means that the Somali security forces must take over all security responsibilities,” said Frimpong.

The AU mission has already trained a team of officers in Jubbaland and South West states to perform the same function.

In March, AMISOM and Somali security officers commenced the registration of Darwish militia in Jubbaland to pave way for their integration into the Somali national security forces.

The Darwish militia group has been helping the Jubbaland administration fight al-Shabab militants and restore law and order.

Austria probes UN peacekeepers over Golan Heights ambush
[Ynet] Austria's defense minister is ordering an investigation into whether the country's peacekeepers allowed Syrian police to drive into a fatal ambush in the Golan Heights six years ago.

Austrian weekly Der Falter published a leaked video Friday that was apparently filmed by the United Nations

peacekeepers from Austria in September 2012 and shows Syrian smugglers ambush the police.

The Austrian soldiers are clearly heard discussing whether to warn the officers, but then letting them pass.

In a statement, the defense ministry said it was only made aware of the "dimension of the incident" by the images and video leaked to Falter.

Defense Minister Mario Kunasek says "the incidents will have to be meticulously and completely cleared up."

Austria's peacekeeping role on the border between Syria and Israel ended in 2013.

Kim Strassel: How Trump Takes On Obstruction
[WSJ] President Trump vociferously protests his innocence as Robert Mueller finishes the first year of his Russia investigation. Still, the endless Tweet bleats of "PHONY" and "WITCH HUNT" are doing little to help his cause.

The question is why this high-energy president seems to have fallen for the media claim that his only proactive course is to fire Mr. Mueller. It isn’t. There are two very bold actions the Trump White House could take to reset the Russia dynamic. Both would aid Mr. Trump’s presidency and serve the executive branch and the public in the longer term.

The first is an abrupt overhaul of the president’s legal team and strategy. Mr. Trump has talented lawyers, but not ones skilled at confronting the threat at hand. They continue to fret over his personal liability, when the real threat is to the Constitution‐to this presidency and every future one. Mr. Mueller is by all accounts now focused on obstruction of justice. Mr. Trump needs constitutional powerhouses who can swiftly take that issue off the table.

Afghanistan
Counterinsurgency operations continue to Lograr
At least 72 military operations have been carried out in Logar province, in the south of Kabul, in last three months but residents and local officials said the province is still insecure.

One member of Logar Provincial Council said Taliban and other insurgent groups are active in parts of all the six districts in the province, including Pul-e-Alam city – the provincial capital.

“The military operations which are conducted at nights are carried out by ‘01 Unit’ from Kabul, independently and without coordination with local authorities (in Logar)… There are some problems. Some houses have been damaged during their operations,” Haseeb Stanekzai, head of the council said.

Logar police said the military operations have been effective in eliminating militants in the province.

“Seventy-two (military) operations have been conducted in the past three months, most of them by special forces and many of them were supported by Air Force. These operations have been effective in eliminating the enemy,” Security Officer at Logar Police Headquarters, Mohammad Ayub Wardak, said.

Residents claimed civilians have also suffered financial losses in the operations.

“The houses that have been targeted are not belonged to the Taliban,” said Ahmadullah, a resident of Shaikhan village in Baraki Barak district, where government forces conducted military operations.

Logar shares borders with Kabul and four other provinces. It also shares border with Pakistan.

This comes after Logar deputy governor Qamaruddin Shakib was killed in a Taliban ambush in Waghjan area in Mohammad Agha district while was on his way to Kabul on Thursday.

Houthis ponder new leader after Saleh Al-Sammad
DUBAI: Soon after Saleh Al-Sammad, one of the most senior Houthi officials, had been killed by a Saudi-led Arab coalition airstrike in Yemen, the militias announced that Mehdi Al-Mashat would take his place as head of the group’s so-called Supreme Political Council.

Al-Sammad’s death was revealed by Houthi leader Abdel-Malek Al-Houthi on Monday in a televised statement. He said Al-Sammad, the president of the Houthi-backed political body that runs most of northern Yemen, was killed last week in Hodeidah province.

He was second on the Saudi-led coalition’s most wanted list of Houthi leaders, after Abdel-Malek Al-Houthi himself. The coalition was offering a $20 million reward for any information leading to Al-Sammad’s capture.

Europe
Germany: ‘Special Measures Committee’ to Study Deporting Osama Bin Laden’s Bodyguard
[AAWSAT] The German government decided to form a "special measures committee" to study ways of deporting a Tunisian man, who allegedly served as one of the late Osama bin Laden
... who is now neither a strong horse nor a weak horse, but a dead horse...
’s bodyguards, to his home country.

Germany’s Federal Ministry of Interior announced Thursday the formation of this committee and said it will focus primarily on receiving assurances from the Tunisian government not to torture and humiliate Sami A. once he lands in his country.

The federal interior ministry established this committee back in 2005, and it is being controlled by the parliament (Bundestag).

The committee’s headquarters is in the Berlin-based Joint Counterterrorism Center, and it includes experts from the Federal Office for Migration and Refugees, the Federal Office for the Protection of the Constitution and the Federal Intelligence Service (BND).

It is specialized in cases of terrorism suspects and "dangerous" bully boys, who are not German nationals. It also considers cases of the withdrawal of asylum from serious and criminal offenders.

A front man for the federal interior ministry said "there are attempts to deport the former bodyguard of Bin Laden" and a ministerial task force will examine the case soon.

Responding to queries from the Alternative for Germany (AfD) party, the government of North Rhine-Westphalia state said the 42-year-old can’t be deported because he might face torture in Tunisia.

The man, only identified as Sami A., has lived in Germany since 1997 and gets €1,168 (£1,022) a month in welfare payments.

The figure was revealed by a regional government, after the far-right AfD asked about him.

Sami A was investigated for alleged al-Qaeda links in 2006, but he was not charged.

According to witness testimony from a German anti-terror trial in 2005, Sami A. served for several months in 2000 as one of Bin Laden's bodyguards in Afghanistan. He denies that, but judges in Dusseldorf believed the witness.

He lives with a German wife and four children in the city of Bochum, in western Germany.

After obtaining a temporary residence permit in Germany in 1999 he took several technology courses and moved to the city in 2005.

His asylum application was rejected in 2007 because the authorities had listed him as a security risk. He has to report daily at a cop shoppe.

The Federal Constitutional Service has put Sami A. since 2012 in the list of dangerous hardliners, whom the department believes they are ready to carry out terrorist operations in Germany.

CJP takes notice of 'botched' investigation of minor girl's rape in Faisalabad
[DAWN] Chief Justice of Pakistain Mian Saqib Nisar on Friday took notice of the botched investigation of a rape case involving a seven-year-old girl in Faisalabad
...formerly known as Lyallpur, the third largest metropolis in Pakistain, the second largest in Punjab after Lahore. It is named after some Arab because the Paks didn't have anybody notable of their own to name it after...
upon the request of the child's father.

The victim's father on Thursday had sent a written request to the chief justice, asking him to order a fresh investigation into his daughter's alleged rape at the hands of their neighbour.

The father, in his request, had stated that the accused had raped the child on October 5, 2017, and a first information report in this regard was filed on October 8.

The father, however, alleges that the case's investigation officer Asmat Cheema conspired with the accused and deliberately tampered with the case's only evidence: the child's trouser.

He said that the police did not follow proper legal procedure while taking the accused for DNA testing and suspects that they also washed the child's trouser ‐ on the basis of which, he claims, the accused was able to secure bail and has been out ever since.

The father told the CJP that he had also written to the Inspector General of Punjab
1.) Little Orphan Annie's bodyguard
2.) A province of Pakistain ruled by one of the Sharif brothers
3.) A province of India. It is majority (60 percent) Sikh and Hindoo (37 percent), which means it has relatively few Moslem riots....

(IG), who had assured him of justice but the accused and police officials made sure that nothing came of it.

The father also asked the CJP to inquire from the additional session judge that on what basis he had issued a seven-month bail to the accused.

The chief justice accepted the father's request today, instructing the Punjab IG to submit a report on the case within three days.

Syrian Democratic Forces Chief: We are Ready to Cooperate with Arab Forces
[AAWSAT] Mazloum Abdi is the commander-in-chief of the Syrian Democratic Forces. Originally from the town of Ain al-Arab (Kobane) in northern Syria, he leads a force of 60,000 troops and recently held a lengthy meeting with Brett McGurk, the US Special Presidential Envoy for the Global Coalition to Defeat ISIS.

Abdi said the meeting discussed President Donald Trump
...New York real estate developer, described by Dems as illiterate, racist, misogynistic, and what ever other unpleasant descriptions they can think of, elected by the rest of us as 45th President of the United States...
’s intention to withdraw the US troops from Syria and the SDF’s willingness to cooperate with Arab countries that might send troops to fight within the Coalition, in case the US withdrew.

In an interview with Asharq al-Awsat, Abdi said: "Officially, there is no decision to withdraw the US troops from Syria, but President Trump proposed the matter to members of his government for discussion. We have information that the administration is discussing his proposal and the possibility of withdrawing troops or not."

"The US and the Coalition countries came to Syria to fight ISIS. The latter has not been eliminated completely, and there are sleeping cells in the liberated areas that continue to constitute a threat. There also remain pledges made by the US and the Coalition to the liberated areas and cities to rebuild and promote peace and stability," the commander stated.

Asked about the possibility of deploying other forces in case of US withdrawal, Abdi replied: "There is nothing official to date, but countries have shown initial approval for sending their forces to Syria as part of the international coalition."

Haftar Returns to Benghazi Amid Celebrations
[AAWSAT] Libyan National Army Commander Khalifa Haftar
...Self-proclaimed Field Marshal, served in the Libyan army under Muammar Qadaffy, and took part in the coup that brought Qadaffy to power in 1969. He became a prisoner of war in Chad in 1987. While held prisoner, he and his fellow officers formed a group hoping to overthrow Qadaffy. He was released around 1990 in a deal with the United States government and spent nearly two decades in the United States, gaining US citizenship. In 1993, while living in the United States, he was convicted in absentia of crimes against the Jamahiriya and sentenced to death. Haftar held a senior position in the anti-Qadaffy forces in the 2011 Libyan Civil War. In 2014 he was commander of the Libyan Army when the General National Congress (GNC) refused to give up power in accordance with its term of office. Haftar launched a campaign against the GNC and its Islamic fundamentalist allies. His campaign allowed elections to take place to replace the GNC, but then developed into a civil war. Guess you can't win them all...
arrived on Thursday from Cairo at Benina International Airport, east of Benghazi, amid popular and official celebrations after receiving treatment for three weeks in Gay Paree.

Earlier in the day, delegations of prominent figures, elders and sheikhs of the Eastern Province as well as members of the House of Representatives and civil society organizations came to Benghazi to participate in the reception ceremony of Haftar, who had received treatment in La Belle France amid "rumors" that he had died.

Popular celebrations began from Wednesday night and took place in the eastern Libyan cities. Crowds were arriving in the squares and hoisting banners and posters of the Marshal, who held talks in Cairo with Egyptian officials before traveling to his country.

During his visit to Egypt, Haftar discussed the relations between Egypt and Libya and the latest developments in his country.

On April 14, a "rumor" was spread about the death of Haftar in a hospital in Gay Paree, causing confusion in Libyan and Arab circles.

The citizens of eastern Libya highly appreciate Haftar, but he has been considered an obstacle to the "Islamists", especially in the west of the country, since his return from exile in the United States following the outbreak of the revolution of February 17, 2011.

Member of the House of Representatives Dr. Mohammed Amer al-Abbani told Asharq al-Awsat that "the return of the commander-in-chief in good health, proves that he is a man of strategies and does not get carried away by rumors."

This Week in Guns, April 28th, 2018

Chris Covert
Rantburg.com

Good news from my AO is that the Oklahoma state house passed a Constitutional Carry law, something I never though I would see. However, it still has to go through the senate and then to Governor Mary Fallin to be signed.

Oklahoma could become the 14th state for permitless carry, something that in itself defeats Heller and the notion that a permit must be obtained to carry a firearm.

Oklahoma would join that august group which includes Alaska, Arizona, Arkansas, Idaho (residents only), Kansas, Maine, Mississippi, Missouri, New Hampshire, North Dakota (residents only; concealed carry only), Vermont, West Virginia and Wyoming (residents only).

There is much left to do in the area of the right to keep and bear arms. The emergency orders, which violate due process with every step, are being pushed by anti gun groups. They are a monster in waiting.

And the press ain't helping: they never do, by demonstrating what a great idea it is to seize guns. My reply is wait until the state drags your happy ass into court and takes something from you based on a vote about that you might do.

Loads.

Rantburg's summary for arms and ammunition:

Pistol ammunition prices were mostly steady. Rifle ammunition prices were mostly steady.

Prices for used pistols were higher. Prices for used rifles were mostly higher.

New Lows:

None

Writers, editors out at Red State
Salem Communications conducts a cleansing of its bloggers, writers and editors.
[Money.CNN] Salem Media, owner of the influential conservative outlet RedState, froze the site on Friday and dismissed many of its writers.

Bloggers were locked out of their accounts -- some just temporarily, while the cuts were made, and others permanently.

Erick Erickson, the site's longtime editor who left in 2015, tweeted about what he called the "mass firing" on Friday morning.

"Very sad to see, but not really surprising given Salem's direction," he wrote. "And, finally, after all these years, they've turned off my account."

Multiple sources told CNNMoney that they believed conservative critics of President Trump were the writers targeted for removal.

"Insufficiently partisan" was the phrase one writer used in a RedState group chat.

"They fired everybody who was insufficiently supportive of Trump," one of the sources who spoke with CNNMoney said, adding, "how do you define being 'sufficiently supportive' of Trump?"

But if it was about politics, it was also about money.

RedState writers work on contract and are paid based on the amount of traffic to their posts.

"Those who had been under a contract with a higher per-click rate were mostly all tossed, only keeping those who were pro-Trump even if their traffic was comparable," another one of the sources said on condition of anonymity.

"Of those who make less under their contracts, they mostly tossed those who had been openly critical of the president," the source said. "It seems to have been a cost saving measure, but the deciding factor between any two people seems to have been who liked the president and who didn't."

Salem had no immediate comment. But an internal memo obtained by CNNMoney confirmed the housecleaning.

"We had to make some tough changes to RedState today," Townhall general manager Jonathan Garthwaite wrote in the memo. "While these changes are painful, they were necessary once we reached the conclusion that we could no longer support the entire roster of writers and editors."

RedState, a 13-year-old blog that was founded by Erick Erickson, is one of several sites in Townhall Media's portfolio. Townhall, in turn, is owned by Salem Media Group, a conservative media company that also operates radio stations and publishes books.

Salem has previously been scrutinized for its treatment of radio hosts who weren't toeing a pro-Trump line during the presidential campaign.

A source with ties to RedState said bloggers had been "wondering if this was going to happen at RedState," meaning "anyone who wasn't a big fan of Trump would be dumped."

RedState has been reflective of the divides within the GOP and the conservative movement, with a spectrum of writers with varying reactions to Trump's political choices and personality conflicts.

Garthwaite did not respond to a followup request for comment on Friday.

His initial email to writers said, "there's no getting around the fact that this is awful news, but I value your contribution to RedState and I hope you will stick with it through this tough period and keep RedState going."

However, some contributors then received a separate email indicating that they were out. Their accounts were locked, meaning publishing rights were revoked.

Caleb Howe, one of the site's lead editors, was among those dismissed.

He cryptically tweeted on Friday, "There is a right way to do something and a f---ed up way."

His tweet aimed at an unknown person, saying, "You can call me back or you can watch this unfold right here, guy."

#2  Think of all the ones that have dropped by the wayside. I wouldn't think of visiting HotAir even if I was bored. Stopped visiting RedState when they swung anti-Trump. No use of Notional Review or The Corner. I dropped my WSJ subscription for the same reason. I gave up the cable TV bundle because I don't want to pay for Sheppy Smith or Chris Wallace any more than I want to pay for Maher or Maddow or Cooper. Really, Pournelle was correct, all organizations are eventually captured by liberals.

UN provide Libyans with explosive disposal equipment
Libyans meet them halfway by providing the explosives
The United Nations Mine Action Service (UNMAS) has provided explosive ordnance disposal equipment to Libyan authorities.

The United Nations Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL) noted on Twitter that the equipment was provided with support of Austria to the Libyan National Safety Authority to enhance more safety with the explosive remnants of war.

Many Libyan areas suffer from mines and war remnants that have claimed many lives due to poor access to safe handling.

Police investigate reports of screams from a house in Germany
[DailyMail] German police had to turn down an invitation to a bondage session after they unwittingly walked in on one while on-duty.

Officers in the southwestern town of Neustadt were called to an apartment late on Wednesday to reports of domestic abuse.

A neighbour had tipped them off to say they had seen a half-naked woman being abused by two men.

But when they arrived at the scene they found the tenant of the flat giving a couple a lesson in the art of Japanese bondage.

Taliban attacks security checkpoint in Parwan Thursday
Armed Taliban on Wednesday attacked security check posts in various areas in Parwan province, local officials said.

According to Parwan security officials the Taliban attacked three security check posts in three districts of the province.

Taliban attacked check posts in Syiah Gird, Shinwari and Shikh Ali district and clashed for several hours with security forces, but eventually they were forced to retreat, said officials.

Alozai Ahmadi, a security official in Parwan province, said that during the clash two insurgents were killed and three others were wounded.

He did not give any information about casualties among security forces.

This comes after Taliban on Wednesday announced their spring offensive and in a statement on Thursday claimed to have conducted dozens of attacks across the country on the first day of their new fighting season.

Prosecutors Identify 416 French Islamic State Donors, Terror Group’s Cash Estimated in The Billions
[Breitbart] Gay Paree prosecutor Francois Molins claimed that 416 Frenchies have helped finance Islamic State
...formerly ISIS or ISIL, depending on your preference. Before that al-Qaeda in Iraq, as shaped by Abu Musab Zarqawi. They're very devout, committing every atrocity they can find in the Koran and inventing a few more. They fling Allah around with every other sentence, but to hear the pols talk they're not really Moslems....
, while intelligence services estimate the terror group to have at least three billion euros in funds.

Prosecutor Molins said that he was alarmed by the number of Frenchies helping to finance Islamic State but added that many were not giving large sums, speaking of a multitude of "micro-transactions" funding the terror group, L’Express reports.

Speaking at a recent conference on the financing of international terrorism in Gay Paree, Molins said that financial intelligence organizations had contributed to tracking the 416 individuals over the last two years. They were also able to identify "320 collectors mainly based in The Sick Man of Europe Turkey
...the decaying remnant of the Ottoman Empire....
and Leb through which jihadists who were in Syria or Iraq could receive funds".

Molins also listed the approximate costs of several major terrorist operations in recent years, claiming that the Charlie Hebdo
...A lefty French satirical magazine, home of what may well be the majority if the active testicles left in Europe...
massacre in January of 2015 had cost roughly 25,000 euros while the Bataclan massacre, which saw multiple button men and jacket wallahs kill 130 victims, cost 80,000 euros.

According to intelligence services, the total amount of cash possessed by the Islamic State is estimated to be around three billion euros.

While some of the money has come from overseas donors, much of the group’s cash has been confiscated from minorities in Iraq and Syria such as Christians. The Islamic State also sold and taxed up to 40 per cent of Iraqi cereal production and 80 per cent of the cotton production of Syria.

Fines within the Islamic State territory for mild transgressions against sharia law, such as a man having too short of a beard, also netted the group around a billion euros over a three year period.

While the territorial gains of the terror group have largely been taken back by a combination of Iraqi, Syrian, Kurdish, Russian, and U.S. forces, the group still remains active in Libya and has been tied to people trafficking.

Interpol warned of at least one case in which 50 suspected Islamic State members had used illegal migration routes from Tunisia to sneak themselves into Italia.

Bangladesh
Why Pakistan cannot say sorry to Bangladesh
[Dhaka Tribune] For some time now, Bangladesh has been pressing Pakistain to apologize for the genocide of the Bangali population in 1971. The occupation army showed no compunction in butchering an estimated three million of their (mostly unarmed) fellow citizens over a nine-month period to quell a liberation struggle in its then eastern wing.

In reply, Pakistain has urged Bangladesh to forget the unfortunate incidents of the past and move on to a new, better relationship. Well short of an apology, its utterly inadequate response glosses over what remains the most shameful blot in Pakistain’s less-than-stellar history.

However,

Palestinian protesters breach Israel-Gaza border fence; 3 killed, hundreds injured in clashes
[SanDiegoUnionTribune] Hundreds of Palestinians stormed a flimsy fence that runs along the border between the Gaza Strip and Israel on Friday, setting parts of the barrier on fire.

It was the first breach of the security fence in five consecutive weeks of Palestinian protests. Israeli army spokesman Lt. Jonathan Conricus said Israel viewed this as an "audacious" and "severe" attack, adding that Israel will not tolerate attempts to infiltrate its territory.

Al Shabaab said on Thursday that it has carried out a bomb attack in Barawe city in Somalia’s southern Lower Region.

“At least three Somali military soldiers were killed and several others wounded in the blast,” read the statement as part.

There was no any comment from the Somali military regarding the incident, which comes barely a week after a bomb killed at least 6 football fans at soccer crowd in the city.

Taliban Cannot Win On The Battlefield: Pentagon
[ToloNews] Senior officials from US Defense Department have reiterated that the Taliban
...the Pashtun equivalent of men...
cannot win on the battlefield in Afghanistan, adding that putting more pressure on the Death Eaters is to get the group to join the peace talks with the Afghan government.

Addressing the US Senate Armed Services Committee, General Joseph Dunford, Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff of the US army, said they have increased military pressure on the Taliban to make sure the group will not win on the battlefield.

"The goal is to make sure they view that the only solution is political solution and they can’t win on the battlefield," said Dunford in response to a question on change in role of engagement of US in Afghanistan.

At the same event, US Defense Secretary James Mattis said that right now they do not see the problems in Afghanistan that existed 17 years ago.

"Problems and places like that don’t stay there," Mattis said in response to a query from US Senator Lindsey Graham
... the endangered South Carolina RINO, fellow maverick of Honest John McCain...
This comes after the Taliban announced their spring offensive.

The Afghan Ministry of Ministry of Defense on Thursday declared Taliban’s announcement ’a war propaganda’, saying the Afghan National Security and Defense Forces (ANDSF) are fully ready to deal devastating blow to the Death Eaters and foil their so-called offensive.

Maher Al-Assad Named Commander of the Syrian Army’s elite 4th Mechanized Division
[AAWSAT] Syrians were shocked with the news of appointing Maher al-Assad, brother of Bashir al-Assad, commander of the Syrian Army’s elite 4th Mechanized Division, as revealed by Russia Today Website and other pro-regime sites.

What caused the shock is that the name of Maher al-Assad has been associated with the 4th Mechanized Division as the commander but it turned out that he was the commander of battalion 42 in the 4th Mechanized Division.

This coincided with news that the Tiger Forces, led by Colonel Suheil al-Hassan, moved from Russia towards the south of Damascus to lead military operations launched by the regime forces there. These operations actually failed after one week of bombarding towns in the south of the capital.

Maher al-Assad, born in 1967, studied mechanical engineering at Damascus University before he enrolled in the military academy then started serving at the 4th division. He was promoted in the summer of the past year.

The 4th Mechanized Division was formed in 1984 from the Defense Companies, established by Rifaat al-Assad, brother of deceased former president Hafez al-Assad, in 1982. Defense Companies had a key role in Hama incidents, back then.

After the failure of Rifaat al-Assad coup over his brother, the Defense Companies were merged with the regime army and together were called the 4th Mechanized Division. It has now become one of the major divisions with around 15,000 members.

Opposing parties attribute the most bloody raids in Damascus countryside and Daraa in the beguiling of the revolution to the 4th Mechanized Division.

Nigeria: Detained Shiite Leader El-Zakzaky Charged With Murder
[All Africa] Detained leader of Nigeria's Shiite group, Ibrahim El-Zakzaky,
...former leader of the Muslim Brotherhood in Nigeria, he converted to Shi'ism after a visit to Iran, and now is a fiery Iranian sockpuppet...
has been charged with murder amid growing street protests demanding his release from prolonged detention.
How better to express one’s religious faith than by murderously riot in the streets?
Mr El-Zakzaky and his wife have been held by the Nigerian government since December 2015 despite court rulings authorising his release.

The government claims he is held in a "protective custody", but his supporters have in the last two weeks intensified protests demanding his freedom.

In what appears to be a response to the protests, the Kaduna state government slammed a fresh eight-count charge on the Shiite leader, his lawyer, Femi Falana, said Thursday.

The charges include homicide which is punishable by death.

Court papers obtained by PREMIUM TIMES indicate that the charges were filed on April 18.

According to the charge, the alleged offences took place during the December 2015 clash between the IMN and a convoy of Nigeria's army chief, Tukur Buratai.
