[IsraelTimes] Pro-Israel Christians pick Jaffa oranges in southern Israel, which their organization then buys from farmers to sell without profit in the Netherlands.
The action in recent weeks in southern Israel lands more than 13 tons of premium oranges bearing the iconic Jaffa brand in the warehouse of the Israel Product Center, which is the commercial arm of the Christians for Israel group, spokesperson Sara van Oordt tells The Times of Israel.
The oranges are preordered and sold out even before their arrival, and stay very briefly at the warehouse of the Israel Products Center inside the three-story headquarters of the Christians for Israel group in Nijkerek near Utrecht. Members and supporters of the group from across the kingdom pick up their Jaffa orders in Nijkerk, van Oordt says.
Each kilogram (2 lbs) costs 2 euros ($2.15), which is significantly cheaper than the standard price of oranges of comparable premium brands at non-discount supermarket chains.
"It’s as Israeli as any product can be, symbolizing Zionism and the establishment of statehood," van Oordt says.
The 13 tons in Nijkerek are a fraction of what Christians for Israel volunteers picked last month in a concentrated action to support Israeli agriculture, she adds. The fact the Jaffas are sold out "shows many Christians in the Netherlands stand squarely behind Israel, in prayer, in action — and also in enjoying the best Israel has to offer."
There’s also a Dutch connection, she notes. "Orange is the Netherlands’ national color. It’s only appropriate they are on offer here."

Ahmed Alid, 45, also allegedly attacked his housemate, a Christian convert, and assaulted two coppers, during the incidents in Hartlepool, northeast England, last October.

[SAHARAREPORTERS] A police checkpoint along the Abakaliki-Enugu Highway in Ebonyi State, southeast Nigeria was attacked by button men on Thursday.
The Ebonyi State Police Command confirmed to SaharaReporters on Thursday that a policeman was killed in the attack.
SaharaReporters gathered that the incident happened at the Ishieke Junction on the outskirts of Abakaliki, the state capital, where a police patrol van was also set on fire.

[FoxNews] An Alabama man with suspected Antifa sympathies was indicted for terrorism for his alleged role in detonating an explosive device filled with nails to maximize its destructive capability, according to the Department of Justice.
Law enforcement arrested Kyle Benjamin Douglas Calvert, 26, Wednesday on federal terrorism charges of malicious use of an explosive and possession of an unregistered destructive device. Calvert had previously posted Antifa content on social media and "expressed his belief that violence should be directed against the government," the DOJ said.
Furthermore, the DOJ's investigation found that Calvert had placed Antifa stickers near the scene of the crime, the press release said.
Court documents also said the man was "dangerous" as he had "described his inability to control his own violent, aggressive impulses."

[NY Post] Buying votes illegally with YOUR money
The Biden administration is canceling another $7.4 billion in student loans for 277,000 borrowers, amounting to $153 billion in total debt forgiveness approved by the president.
The Education Department announced Friday that it had approved the extra loan cancellations for almost 4.3 million student borrowers nationwide through its Saving on a Valuable Education (SAVE) plan.
“Today’s announcement shows — once again — that the Biden-Harris Administration is not letting up its efforts to give hardworking Americans some breathing room,” Education Secretary Miguel Cardona said in a statement.
“As long as there are people with overwhelming student loan debt competing with basic needs such as food and healthcare, we will remain relentless in our pursuit to bring relief to millions across the country.”
But critics of the move have often pointed out the financial burden is only being shifted to the majority of US taxpayers who do not have some sort of college degree.
“The administration is tone deaf. There’s no other way to put it,” said House Education and Workforce Committee chairwoman Virginia Foxx, who criticized the Education Department for botching its federal student aid programs while prioritizing the debt cancellation “scheme.”
“That has been frustrating, especially since it has jeopardized the academic journey of millions of students,” Foxx (R-NC) said. “But what is absolutely maddening is that the administration is STILL not doing its job and instead focusing on its student loan shenanigans.”
Under the Biden administration’s various student loan cancellation programs, at least 10% of borrowers have “now been approved for some debt relief,” according to the Education Department, making good on a 2020 campaign promise from the president.
“From day one of my Administration, I promised to fight to ensure higher education is a ticket to the middle class, not a barrier to opportunity,” President Biden said in a statement. “I will never stop working to cancel student debt — no matter how many times Republican elected officials try to stop us.”
Biden, 81, began the income-driven repayment plan after the Supreme Court struck down his $430 billion student debt cancellation gambit for more than 40 million borrowers in June 2023 — but the SAVE plan is expected to cost US taxpayers even more.
According to a Penn Wharton Budget Model estimate, SAVE costs will soar to $475 billion over the next 10 years.
The Republican attorneys general of Kansas and Missouri are already challenging the plan with federal lawsuits that are backed by their opposite numbers in Alabama, Alaska, Idaho, Iowa, Louisiana, Montana, Nebraska, South Carolina, Texas and Utah.

“Last time Defendants tried this the Supreme Court said that this action was illegal,” the lawsuit states. “Nothing since then has changed, other than introducing more legal errors into this Rule’s underlying analysis.”
A recent court filing by Kansas AG Kris Kobach added that it was “unrealistic to think that any loan forgiveness that occurs during this litigation will ever be clawed back.”
The SAVE plan is already serving at least 8 million student borrowers, allowing many to make lower payments and some to make no payments on their debt until their income rises above a certain threshold.
Under the plan, borrowers who originally borrowed $12,000 or less are eligible for forgiveness after 10 years. Those who took out more than $12,000 can get cancellation but on a longer timeline. For each $1,000 borrowed beyond $12,000, it adds an additional year of payments on top of 10 years.
On Friday the administration also said it’s canceling loans for 65,000 borrowers who are enrolled in older income-driven repayment plans and hit the finish line for forgiveness. It also announced cancellation for another 5,000 borrowers through the Public Service Loan Forgiveness program.
That’s on top of a pledge Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris made to voters in the swing states of Wisconsin and Pennsylvania earlier this week to cancel up to $20,000 in accrued interest for more than 25 million debtors who went to college.

My son is in the process of being a first time buyer - the only reason he was able to pull it off at all is because he's a veteran who could go with a VA loan.
And the place still came in at just over $170K for 1100 sq. ft. Big yard though.

Back in 1982 the only reason we were able to pull it off was because the sellers were willing to let us have an FHA loan. We felt very lucky to only have to pay about 19.5% interest for a 30-year fixed with 2% down. But we were those cute youngsters eager to start married life in a home of our own, so they were willing to go through extra inspections and repairs to get the sale approved. When we sold, we did the same for the buyers who came after us.

Democrats are hemorrhaging minority voter support at breakneck pace, and they cannot afford to risk a greater exodus of Black voters by unceremoniously dumping a Black woman from their ticket.
Ultimately, the vice presidential pick should be selected by paying some consideration to the above factors, but above all, it is imperative to assess the contenders a little less robotically. We’re talking about human beings, after all. As dumbed down as it may seem, it is actually crucial to select someone who has the right "vibe"—or, to put it a little more technically, best captures the prevailing zeitgeist.

I'd argue the last good Democrat president was Grover Cleveland. I think he would put modern-day GOPers to utter shame. Cleveland got a little weird towards the end with his Spain-Cuba policy, but overall, he was pretty good.

[American Greatness] Investigative journalist Catherine Herridge testified Thursday that CBS News locked her out of her emails and her office when it seized her reporting files, which included confidential source information pertaining to an investigation into government corruption.
"I can only speak for myself. When my records were seized, I felt it was a journalistic rape," Herridge told House Judiciary Committee Chairman Jim Jordan (R-Ohio) during a House Judiciary Subcommittee on the Constitution and Limited Government hearing.
The seizure of her files back in February alarmed many current and former CBS employees, as the move was said to be unheard of in the news business. SAG-AFTRA, the media’s largest labor union, immediately got involved, and several days after the news shocked the reporting world, Herridge’s materials were returned.
Herridge, formerly the Chief Intelligence correspondent for Fox News, was one of four witnesses testifying before the subcommittee hearing, titled "Fighting for a Free Press: Protecting Journalists and their Sources." The purpose of the hearing was "to examine the federal government’s infringement on the First Amendment’s guarantee of freedom of the press, as well as federal shield law proposals."
Also testifying Thursday were Mary Cavallaro, Chief Broadcast Officer of SAG-AFTRA News & Broadcast Department; Sharyl Attkisson, Investigative journalist and managing editor of "Full Measure with Sharyl Attkisson;" and Nadine Farid Johnson, Policy Director for Knight First Amendment Institute at Columbia University.
All four witnesses strongly supported the Protect Reporters from Exploitative State Spying (PRESS) Act, which passed the unanimously in the House back in January and is currently being considered in the U.S. Senate.
The PRESS Act prohibits the federal government from compelling journalists and providers of telecommunications services to disclose "sources, records, contents of a communication, documents, and information obtained or created by journalists in the course of their work" except in limited circumstances involving terrorism or imminent violence. The legislation also prevents federal law enforcement from abusing its subpoena power.
"As you know, I was held in contempt of court for upholding the basic journalistic principle of maintaining the pledge of confidentiality to my sources," Herridge said in her opening statement. "I have complete respect for the district court and the judicial process and I am not here to litigate the merits of that case. It will play out before the appellate court in Washington D.C."

I have been biased against carbines since Vietnam. I was issued and carried a CAR-15 so-called 'commando', aka XM177(maybe E1, I forget). Basically a single shot, sometimes two-shot LOUD short barreled almost-M16. Highly unreliable. No forward assist. Did I say LOUD? After a few months I was able to swap it out for an XM16, a huge improvement while not perfect, was good enough. I really ought to get over it and look at the current carbines.

[Blaze] An 85-year-old woman in rural Idaho is being hailed for her heroic actions after she was the victim of a brutal home invasion.
The Bingham County Sheriff’s Office said officers were called to the home on March 13 and found a man deceased from gunshot wounds and the elderly homeowner also injured.
The home invasion began at about 2 a.m. when 39-year-old Derek Ephriam Condon parked a mile away and then broke into the home through a window with a screwdriver, according to Bingham County Prosecutor Ryan Jolley. He was wearing a military jacket and a black ski mask.
Condon awakened Christine Jenneiahn by bashing her in the head with his gun. Police said they found blood on her pillow to substantiate the claim.
The man then dragged Jenneiahn to the living room and handcuffed her to a wooden chair. He demanded that she tell him where her valuables were located and grew angry when she said she didn't have much. She said that he put his gun to her head at that point.
She told him that there were two safes downstairs, and Condon left her handcuffed to rummage around for the safes. That's when he discovered that her disabled son was also in the home, and he grew angry that she hadn't told him about the son.
When he left her again, Jenneiahn was able to drag her chair over to her pillow and retrieve a .357 Magnum revolver. She hid the gun and waited to see what Condon would do next.
Jolley said that Condon threatened to kill her while burglarizing the home, so, Jenneiahn decided to take a chance, and she shot at the man.
Condon was struck twice and was able to shoot back at the woman, striking her numerous times with a 9mm gun in the leg, arm, chest, and abdomen.
The man made his way to the kitchen, where he died of his wounds.
Jenneiahn was still handcuffed to the chair and remained on the floor for 10 hours before her son was able to bring her a phone so that she could call the police. She given life-saving treatment and taken to a hospital.
Jolley said that police found Condon's car near the home with footprints leading to the house. They also found a set of lock picks on Condon's body and a bag containing some of the woman's possessions.
The incident was determined to be a "justifiable homicide" under Idaho criminal code, according to Jolley.
He called the case "one of the most heroic acts of self-preservation" he had ever seen.
"Her grit, determination, and will to live appear to be what saved her that night," Jolley added. "Christine was justified in taking any and all means necessary to defend herself and her son that night."

Good thing for her that this didn't happen in New York or California. She would have been arrested and charged with at least manslaughter. If she were even allowed to have the gun in the first place.

According to a new audit of the agency, as of just less than a year ago, 63 percent of new IRS audit inquiries were to middle-income earners who made less than $200,000.

[Daily Caller] A 21-year-old man lost his life Tuesday after attempting to jump across a Colorado highway, the Grand County Sheriff’s Office said in a statement.
An unidentified man died while attempting a high-risk ski jump across Colorado’s Highway 40, according to the Grand County Sheriff’s Office. Responders received a call about an unconscious skier who was not breathing. Upon arrival, it was evident that the skier had tried to leap the width of the highway but failed to achieve the necessary speed and distance.
"The preliminary investigation revealed that the victim was attempting to perform a high-risk skiing stunt by trying to clear the width of Highway 40 and unfortunately lacked the necessary speed and distance and subsequently landed on the highway pavement," authorities wrote in a Facebook post. "The victim had been wearing a helmet and other protective gear."
Efforts to resuscitate the man were unsuccessful, and he was declared dead at the scene. "Emergency responders arrived on scene and determined that the male subject was deceased and the Grand County Coroner’s Office was notified to respond to the scene," the statement read.
[Washington Examiner] A state prosecutor has been appointed in an investigation into Georiga Republican Lt. Gov. Burt Jones’s alleged role in attempts to overturn the 2020 presidential election in the Peach State.
The Prosecuting Attorneys’ Council of Georgia announced on Thursday that its executive director, Peter Skandalakis, has been appointed to investigate if Jones violated any criminal laws. No further comment was given on the investigation.
A judge in the state had previously disqualified Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis from investigating Jones after she sponsored a fundraiser for his Democratic opponent in the lieutenant gubernatorial election in 2022. Willis indicted former President Donald Trump, among other co-conspirators, in a sweeping racketeering indictment last year on charges related to alleged attempts to overturn the 2020 election.

My guess, having watched the way politicians operate in this state for decades, is that most of the money went to developers. The scam is: politicians scream about the need for more "affordable" housing for the homeless. Then they contract with developers to build "affordable" housing at half a million dollars or more per unit. Of course the units are not really affordable at all but no matter. The developers get rich and then contribute to the politicians' election campaigns.
It's all perfectly legal because the politicians write the law that way. It's been happening this way for decades. As long as I can remember, and that's a long time, they've been screaming about affordable housing. They've been building as many houses as they can as fast as they can, making a mess of this state and overloading the infrastructure, and yet housing costs continue to sky rocket. It's all a scam.
The pure folly of it is that the kind of people who become homeless are mentally ill drug addicts who are incapable of managing their own affairs. They need to be incarcerated and supervised in dormitories, barracks or tent cities out in the boondocks so they won't be a threat to normal citizens. If you leave them unsupervised in an apartment, condo or house they will destroy it and most likely damage neighboring properties in the process.
The truth is, the only way to make California affordable for all the people all over the world who want to live here is to turn it into the kind of slum where nobody wants to live. Newsom and his pals are dead set on doing just that.

I'm sure Southerners look upon Sherman like Japanese look upon Curtis LaMay. Lesson here is don't bombard a federal military installation.
As for tax revenue, seems the national government keep rolling without collecting that revenue from 1861 on. As for slavery, the simple fact that the 13th Amendment could never pass in 1860 but did in 1865 says it all.
The problem for the south was that they had a ruling class much like that which we have today. They were not going to give up the power they had which was largely dependent upon that way of doing business. They were able to exploit local tribalism to sacrifice way too many of their brethren to keep that power. Sounds way too familiar to us from this perspective.

Sherman said that if the U.S. had lost the war he would be prosecuted for war crimes. Union artillery had barely gotten into range of Atlanta when, on July 19, 1864, Sherman ordered a bombardment of the city's buildings: "No consideration must be paid to the fact they are occupied by families, but the place must be cannonaded." The Yankee guns fired their first shells on July 20, and within a few days, Confederate newspapers began reporting casualties.

...My current residence is almost within sight of where Sherman oversaw the bombardment of Columbia, and the hits on the State House are commemorated by bronze stars set into the structure (NOTE: Sherman had lousy gunners by that point of the war; they were firing over open sights from just over a mile away and barely nicked it.)
Had Sherman not taken Atlanta and began his march to the sea, the Civil War wouldn't have ended for at least another 18 months past when it did - October of 1866. The March tore out the heart of the Confederacy, and destroyed literal years worth of supplies and food, as well as the means to transport them to the troops. Had those supplies and support still been available, even Robert Lee might not have been able to convince his men not to melt into the hills and fight a guerilla war.

[AFRICANEWS] Malian authorities on Wednesday issued a decree banning political party activities amid calls on the ruling army junta to organize elections.
The announcement was made by the government spokesperson on state television ... and if you can't believe state television who can you believe?

The dispute over the resolution in a large New York City suburb reflects shifting rhetoric surrounding the Israel-Hamas war six months after it began on October 7 with the Hamas-led invasion of Israel that saw 1,200 people in the country’s south butchered, and another 253 kidnapped to the Gaza Strip. A number of cities have passed ceasefire resolutions. But while competing texts have been put before some city councils, the debates until now have mainly focused on whether or not to call for a ceasefire.
The Yonkers debate, by contrast, comes at a time when calls to stop or at least immediately pause the fighting have gained increasing purchase among US politicians as well as left-wing pro-Israel groups. Jewish groups on the center and right have generally opposed ceasefire calls. Israel and Hamas have been engaging in indirect talks over a ceasefire for months; this week, Hamas again rejected an Israeli proposal for a pause in the fighting.
Collins-Bellamy said that in addition to the pro-Paleostinian protest, members of the Jewish community had sent around 1,000 emails to the city council opposing the measure. Thirty Yonkers community members signed up to speak at the council meeting and Collins-Bellamy believed all planned to oppose the resolution.
The draft that the council would have considered was in line with the stance of left-wing Jewish groups and many Democratic officials, who have stood behind Israel’s right to exist while increasingly opposing the continuation of the war.
The draft resolution holds Hamas responsible for the outbreak of the conflict due to its devastating October 7 massacre, decries the "unjust captivity" of 129 remaining Israeli hostages; mourns the killing of Israelis; and recognizes the right of Israelis to "live in Israel in peace and the existence of the democratic Jewish state."
The text also acknowledges the tens of thousands of Paleostinians killed and injured, enumerates a right to Paleostinian self-determination and calls for an end to the suffering and displacement in Gaza.
"The City Council of Yonkers believes that all human life is precious," the resolution says. "We acknowledge the immediate need for a ceasefire," it continues, adding calls to facilitate humanitarian aid, return the hostages, and halt the displacement and violence against Paleostinians.
Collins-Bellamy said "the tide has shifted" since the start of the war, when supporters of Israel were more firmly behind Israel’s effort to fight back. The mounting civilian corpse count "tugs at people’s heartstrings," she said, and a growing number of Democratic politicians have endorsed a ceasefire.
"They made it OK as opposed to taboo to say, ’Hey, Israel, maybe we even take a temporary break to get the hostages released and get some humanitarian aid in there,’" she said.
Collins-Bellamy said the council had been approached by the pro-Paleostinian activists about a ceasefire resolution in January. Collins-Bellamy said she had little knowledge of the conflict at that point and began to do research to formulate a resolution. But successive drafts floated by the council were rejected by the activist group.
"They still are opposing it because it is not the version that they drafted," Collins-Bellamy told the New York Jewish Week on Tuesday, adding that the alternate resolution the pro-Paleostinian coalition drafted would likely only receive two votes on the seven-seat council.
"I asked them, ’Do you want a resolution that says explicitly what you asked for but will be voted down?’" she said. "We are absolutely condemning Hamas and they don’t want us to go that route and they want us to use language that is more harsh toward Israel."
This week, the activists called to "flood" the city hall in protest ahead of the vote, using a term commonly employed by pro-Paleostinian activists that echoes Hamas’s name for the October 7 attack, "Al-Aqsa Flood."
The campaign is led by a group called the Yonkers Ceasefire Coalition that includes Jewish Voice for Peace Westchester, an anti-Zionist group; the local chapter of Democratic Socialists of America; Westchester for Paleostine; and WESPAC, a nonprofit that facilitates funding for prominent pro-Paleostinian groups around the United States.
Hadil Sam, an activist with the group, said the coalition had gone back and forth with the City Council over the resolution’s text for months and had offered alternatives.
"They went with one that is very biased and does not represent the community," Sam told the New York Jewish Week. "They don’t really want to work with us, they just want to put something out there that says ’ceasefire.’"
The activists took issue with the city council’s call to recognize Israel’s existence, saying the demand would "force Paleostinians to accept their status as non-citizens, second-class citizens, and refugees in their own land, with no national rights and no right of return." Arab citizens of Israel have equal rights under the law, though many have protested discrimination. Most Israelis view advocacy for a Paleostinian right of return as tantamount to calling for the end of Israel as a Jewish-majority state.
The pro-Paleostinian activists also objected to blaming Hamas for the outbreak of the conflict and not calling for the "release of Paleostinian hostages" — an apparent reference to prisoners detained by Israeli forces on security offenses. Sam said the group also objected to the draft’s leaving out an "explicit description of the violence that Israel has been committing."
Sam said the statement supporting Israel’s existence was outside the scope of the resolution, and that she felt the clause in support of Paleostinian self-determination was insufficient because it focused on only Gaza.
"This is a ceasefire resolution, we’re not talking about declaring states," Sam said.
The alternate resolution from the coalition, drafted last week, calls to "recognize the rights of Paleostinians and Israelis to live with respect, dignity, freedom, and self-determination"; focuses more extensively on Paleostinian casualties; condemns the killing of civilians and "collective punishment"; urges the release of hostages and Paleostinian political prisoners; and calls for a permanent ceasefire.
The Westchester Jewish Council issued a "call to action" urging followers to gather outside City Hall, around the same time pro-Paleostinian activists planned to at the same location.
One of the people who signed up to speak on behalf of the Jewish council was Rabbi Bini Krauss, principal of the Orthodox SAR Academy, located blocks outside of Yonkers’ borders in the Riverdale section of the Bronx. He planned to call attention to the hostages held by Hamas — including US citizens — in opposing the ceasefire resolution.
"How can we call for a ceasefire when our fellow Americans are being held and tortured?" Krauss said he planned to say in his remarks to the council. "This council, by rejecting a resolution being furthered by those who do not respect the right of Israel to exist, will stand on the right side of decency, of justice, and of history."
Phylisa Wisdom, the executive director of the New York Jewish Agenda liberal advocacy group, said she was dismayed by both sides’ opposition to the resolution. Wisdom’s group has advocated for a ceasefire that includes the release of hostages since early in the war.
"I am surprised and disappointed that anyone who wants peace and for this war to end would reject such a statement," she told the New York Jewish Week, adding that ceasefire resolutions earlier in the war had aimed to simply gather as much support for the measures as possible.
"I understand that there’s a lot of specifics around what a ceasefire could look like," she said, "but for those who are interested in freeing the hostages, in getting aid into Gaza, in stopping the hunger and death of Paleostinians in Gaza, I really don’t know how you could oppose a statement like this."

If they don’t find evidence, they drop the case too quickly; they see it as a standard case. But they have to do more to protect the Jews, especially these days."
The Public Prosecution Service said in a statement reported by Telegraaf, "The investigation has not provided any legal and convincing evidence of abuse."
"That is not to say that the situation could not be considered unpleasant, undesirable or indecent," the statement continued. "However, today is that tomorrow you were thinking about yesterday... that is not something that is up to the Public Prosecution Service to judge. This has been going on for a while. 50 years ago I was a division officer in the Navy. One of the guys who worked for me wanted a few days of leave because his parrot died. ( His wife couldn't have children and the parrot was a substitute.) He was pretty useless anyway, so I signed off on his request. My boss laughed until he cried when I went to get his approval.
