Austin, TX Lawyer Goes Up the Brazos River for 15-1/2 years
[Dallas News] An Austin lawyer known as the "DWI Dude" for his area of practice was sentenced on Monday to about 15 1/2 years in federal prison for shaking down Colombian drug traffickers for over $1 million on the false promise of being able to make their charges go away.
Austin resident and lawyer. A win-win!
Mr. Jamie Balagia, a veteran Austin lawyer who made a name for himself defending people charged with drunken driving, was found guilty of conspiracy to commit money laundering, obstruction of justice and conspiracy to commit wire fraud.
Shaking down Colombian drug traffickers - another win!
He also was found guilty of attempting to violate the Kingpin Act for accepting money from men whom the feds designated as significant drug traffickers without official government permission.
If only he'd gotten the appropriate permission! I wonder if there's any grift in getting 'official government permission'?
U.S. District Judge Amos Mazzant on Monday noted that the over 200 pages of character letters about Balagia which he received was the most he had ever seen in a case. The judge said he "struggled" with his sentencing decision but noted that Balagia was an officer of the court. "A message has to be sent for future lawyers," Mazzant said.
The message is, "work for the government."
Balagia, who still maintains his innocence, asked [Judge] Mazzant to consider his age, noting that men in his family rarely live past 70. "I am not a threat to any community," he told the judge.

But assistant U.S. Attorney Heather Rattan said Balagia was "one of our own" who "made a mockery" out of the U.S. justice system.

"He portrayed our system of justice as being for sale," she said. said Balagia was "one of our own" who "made a mockery" out of the U.S. justice system. "He portrayed our system of justice as being for sale," she said.
Can't do that without 'official government permission'.
"This defendant and his group were running a scam on drug dealers — some of the biggest drug dealers in the world," former U.S. Attorney Joe Brown said at the time. "Fortunately for him, these drug dealers chose to turn him into the FBI rather than handle it any other way. It is important for the American justice system that we prosecute those who represent that the justice system is for sale.
We can't allow Americans to cheat drug dealers! That's not who we are!
Balagia is the second Texas lawyer in a decade to be sent to prison for shaking down drug dealers by claiming to have Washington, D.C., contacts who could pull strings for sweetheart deals or dropped charges.
Should've used Perkins-Coie.
Balagia, Perea and Morgan in 2014 told the three Colombians they could have their charges reduced or dismissed in exchange for a seven-figure sum, court documents show. They said they would use some of the money to bribe "high-profile" U.S. officials, according to government evidence.
Only Colombian drug dealers would believe that!
Aldemar Segura met with Balagia and Morgan at the Collin County jail in October 2016 to discuss payments, court records show. The meeting was taped. Segura persuaded the pair to also meet with his bookkeeper and personal representative, who was an undercover FBI agent, court records show.

In November 2016, the undercover FBI agent met with Morgan at a North Texas restaurant to deliver a $300,000 partial payment, court records say. Morgan was arrested when he took a suitcase full of cash from the agent's vehicle, records show.
Government cash or Colombian drug kingpin kash?
Aldemar Segura and Ordonez pleaded guilty to drug trafficking charges and were given lengthy prison terms. But because they cooperated with authorities in the government's criminal case against Balagia, they stand to benefit from reduced sentences.
FBI wins all the way around.

Chauvin juror defends lying about being at BLM protest for George Floyd
[Mail via Right Scoop] A juror for Derek Chauvin didn’t tell the truth about being at a BLM protest for George Floyd last year when he was being queried by Chauvin’s defense team during the jury selection:

A photo, posted on social media, shows Brandon Mitchell attending an August 28 event to commemorate Martin Luther King Jr’s ‘I Have a Dream’ speech during the 1963 March on Washington.

It shows Mitchell, a high school basketball coach, standing with two other men and wearing a T-shirt with a picture of King and the words, ‘GET YOUR KNEE OFF OUR NECKS’ and ‘BLM’. He is also wearing a baseball cap printed with Black Lives Matter.

Omar al-Bashir ally would prefer ICC to Sudan court for Darfur trial
[ENGLISH.ALARABIYA.NET] One of the key people accused of war crimes and genocide in Darfur in the early 2000s said on Tuesday he would prefer to be tried in front of the International Criminal Court (ICC) rather than what he said were biased Sudanese courts.

Ousted President Omar al-Bashir
...Former President-for-Life of Sudan He came to power in 1989 when he, as a brigadier in the Sudanese army, led a group of officers in a bloodless military coup that ousted the government of Prime Minister Sadiq al-Mahdi and eventually appointed himself head cheese. He fell out with his Islamic mentor, Hasan al-Turabi, tried to impose shariah on the Christian and animist south, resulting in its secessesion, and attempted to Arabize Darfur by unleashing the barbaric Janjaweed on it. Sudan's potential prosperity has been pissed away in warfare that has left as many as 400,000 people dead and 2.5 million displaced. Hee was overthrown by popular consent in 2019. Omar has been indicted for genocide by the International Criminal Court but nothing is expected to come of it...
has for years resisted the ICC warrants against him and four close allies over the conflict in Sudan's western region that killed an estimated 300,000 people and drove 2.5 million from their homes.

They face charges at The Hague of genocide, war crimes and crimes against humanity for atrocities committed by pro-government forces in Darfur beginning in 2002.

"An authority with this kind of miserable performance will not be able or willing to carry out justice," one of the four allies, Ahmed Haroun, said in a statement verified by his family, referring to Sudanese courts.

"... And so I state with full confidence that it is better for my case to be argued, if there is a case worth arguing, in front of the International Criminal Court."

Another of Bashir's allies, Ali Kushayb, surrendered to the ICC in the Central African Republic in June.

The ICC issued arrest warrants for Bashir in 2009 and 2010 accusing him of criminal masterminding atrocities in his campaign to crush a revolt in Darfur region.

Sudan's transitional government, formed after an uprising that removed Bashir and sent him, Haroun, and several others to jail in April 2019, has said it will cooperate with the ICC and ICC officials have visited Sudan.

But it is not yet clear whether the defendants will be sent to The Hague or tried inside Sudan.

Turkey Has Suspended the Withdrawal of Syrian Mercenaries from Libya
[LIBYAREVIEW] On Tuesday, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights (SOHR) reported that the repatriation of Syrian fighters from Libya has been completely suspended by The Sick Man of Europe Turkey
...the occupiers of Greek Asia Minor...
It added that the suspension has sparked a state of discontent among these mercenaries, as they are demanding to leave Libya as soon as possible.

SOHR sources said that only a small number of mercenaries have managed to return to Syria, after providing medical reports. As well as some of them bribing their militia leaders to be discharged.

Last month, the SOHR reported that the Ottoman Turkish government sent a new batch of 380 Syrian mercenaries to Libya. "There are still more than 6,630 mercenaries in Libya, amid Ottoman Turkish intentions to keep groups of Ottoman Turkish-backed Syrian fighters in Libya to protect Ottoman Turkish interests," it concluded.

The butcher's bill for the Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan war
Direct translation of the article
[Regnum] Large-scale clashes between Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan, during which small arms, armored vehicles, artillery and aircraft were used, are over. The parties return troops to their places of permanent deployment, refugees go to their native villages. The victims are being counted and the damage caused is being recovered.

Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan have officially accused each other of aggression. Information confrontation is taking place in the media, social networks, as well as at the diplomatic level. The incident became a new and, alas, a sad milestone in the history of the region - this is the first open armed conflict between the countries of Turkestan.

Determining who is responsible for the death of dozens and the injury of hundreds of people is a long-term and highly controversial matter. As long as the parties exchange accusations and question each other's arguments, the facts can be compared.

It is possible to understand the scale of what happened and draw preliminary conclusions about the course of events by comparing the numbers of victims and destructions. IA REGNUM has collected data on the number of people killed and wounded during armed clashes, as well as material damage.

Europe
Germany scraps deportation flight to Afghanistan
[DW] Berlin says it is delaying a Tuesday deportation flight to Afghanistan over "logistical" issues. Human rights groups have been calling for them to be ditched permanently.

The German government has canceled a planned deportation flight to return migrants colonists to Afghanistan, bigwigs said on Monday.

A spokeswoman for Interior Minister Horst Seehofer said the "return measure" had been postponed due to "logistical" problems.

International troops officially began withdrawing from Afghanistan on May 1.

Refugee advocate groups have called for the cancelation of all future flights. They said that the deportations had been axed owing to the deteriorating security situation in the country, which was invaded by a US-led NATO
...the North Atlantic Treaty Organization. A collection of multinational and multilingual and multicultural armed forces, all of differing capabilities, working toward a common goal by pulling in different directions...
alliance in 2001.

Officials quoted by the AFP news agency said that the federal government was concerned about the safety of the coppers accompanying the potential returnees.

The need for increased security measures in Kabul made flights impossible between May 1 and May 6.

Officials told the dpa news agency that Germany would not scrap its policy of allowing deportations to Afghanistan.

Last month, German Defense Minister Annegret Kramp-Karrenbauer said Berlin would do all it can to help local Afghans who had assisted Germany's military during the campaign.

A procedure for admitting local Afghan staff who need refuge already exists, although there are a number of disputed cases.

According to the Defense Ministry, 781 people have been approved for residency in Germany since 2013.

German officials are trying to streamline the process to make easier for those Afghans to seek a new life in Germany.

Seven on trial in France for 2014 attack on Saudi prince's convoy in Paris
[ENGLISH.ALARABIYA.NET] Seven men went on trial on Tuesday in Gay Paree for the 2014 attack on Saudi prince’s convoy that saw them make off with bundles of cash, jewelry and diplomatic papers.

The prince left his suite at the George V hotel in the evening of August 17, heading to to Le Bourget airport north of Gay Paree.

He was later followed by his official convoy of cars led by a Mercedes Viano van, which was forced to a halt by two stolen BMWs just as it entered the access ramp for the motorway leading to the airport.

The prince was already airborne as the heist unfolded, headed for Spain, Le Gay Pareeien daily reported.

Armed men wearing balaclavas stormed and hijacked the Mercedes, threw out its passengers and drove off. No shots were fired and nobody was harmed.

The stolen loot included 250,000 euros ($300,000 at current rates) in cash, another $300,000 in cash, luxury watches and documents.

Investigators suspected the assailants had help since they appeared to know exactly which car to target in the robbery.

The cars were later found torched in a small town northeast of Gay Paree.

The paper said days earlier anti-gang police, suspicious of increased activity in the Gay Paree underworld consistent with a planned robbery, had put some of the group’s members under increased surveillance.

As the formal investigation got underway, data from that surveillance helped police assemble evidence of the conspiracy, Le Gay Pareeien said.

Suspicions hardened when the alleged attackers started freely spending cash on holidays, cars and cycle of violences. One suspect opened two convenience stores and another a shisha bar outside Gay Paree.

Nine months after the heist, in May 2015, police arrested around a dozen people and later charged six of them, aged 27 to 51, with aggravated robbery.

Some of the men were from gritty housing projects near the French capital, while others were part of Roma communities. Most had police records involving violent mostly peaceful robbery or drug trafficking.

A seventh suspect was arrested in 2017.

Only one of the accused, identified as Ludovic L., has admitted any wrongdoing, saying he had stolen the two BMWs used in the heist.

The suspects risk up to 30 years in jail if found guilty of the charges of "armed robbery in a gang" and "membership of a criminal conspiracy".

The trial is to last just under three weeks.

French far-right leader Marine Le Pen acquitted after sharing IS execution images
[IsraelTimes] Court clears politician over posts with pictures of beheaded journalist, captive being run over by truck and Jordanian pilot being burned alive in a cage.

A French court on Tuesday acquitted far-right leader and presidential hopeful Marine Le Pen on charges she broke hate-speech laws by tweeting pictures of Islamic State
...formerly ISIS or ISIL, depending on your preference. Before that they were al-Qaeda in Iraq, as shaped by Abu Musab Zarqawi. They're really very devout, committing every atrocity they can find in the Koran and inventing a few more. They fling Allah around with every other sentence, but to hear western pols talk they're not really Moslems....
atrocities.

Le Pen shared the gruesome images in December 2015,
...six years ago...
a few weeks after Islamic State jihadists killed 130 people in attacks in Gay Paree, in response to a journalist who she accused of drawing a comparison between IS and her party.

One of the pictures showed the body of James Foley, an American journalist beheaded by the Islamist terrorists.

Another showed a man in an orange jumpsuit being run over by a tank, and the third a Jordanian pilot being burned alive in a cage.

"ISIS is this!" Le Pen wrote in a caption, using an Arabic acronym for IS.

In 2018 a judge charged her,
...three years later. In the middle of a political campaign that she might otherwise have won, if I recall correctly...
as well as her National Rally party colleague Gilbert Collard who also tweeted the pictures, with circulating "violent mostly peaceful messages that incite terrorism or pornography or seriously harm human dignity" and that can be viewed by a minor.

The crime is punishable by up to three years in prison and a fine of $90,000 (75,000 euros), but the prosecution sought only a $6,000 (5,000 euro) fine.

The court acquitted both Le Pen and Collard on Tuesday, citing the right to freedom of expression.

The court recognized Le Pen’s intention to inform by sharing the images and said doing so can contribute to public debate, as long as violence is not normalized.

"It’s a great victory for law because freedom of expression was at stake in this case," Le Pen’s lawyer Rodolphe Bosselut told news hounds.

"Freedom of expression has been recognized as complete for a top politician," he added.

The verdict comes as opinion polls show Le Pen will likely face off again against President Emmanuel Macron in next year’s presidential contest, in a repeat of the run-off seen in the last presidential elections in 2017.

Making it completely obvious that these hair-dyed, nose-ringed scumbags are Democrat shock troops.
[Zero Hedge] - We recently discussed how the plea agreement with a BLM protester (who tried to cut the brake lines on a police vehicle) may indicate a significant shift from the Trump Administration in prosecuting violent protesters. New figures out of Portland would indicate that there is such a major shift occurring. The Justice Department are dropping 58 of the 97 criminal charges brought after the Portland riots, including assaults on officers.
...and the other 39 will be quietly dropped next week.

Canada Says Hizbullah, Iran Involved in Money Laundering
[AnNahar] The Canadain federal government has tasked a committee with investigating money laundering, gambling and drug smuggling operations through casinos in Vancouver, in which a network reportedly affiliated with the Iranian regime and Hizbullah
...Party of God, a Leb militia inspired, founded, funded and directed by Iran. Hizbullah refers to itself as The Resistance and purports to defend Leb against Israel, with whom it has started and lost one disastrous war to date, though it did claim victory...
are involved, al-Arabiya network revealed on Tuesday.

The committee provided al-Arabiya channel with part of the investigation, which was conducted last March, in which an officer revealed the involvement of Iran
...a theocratic Shiite state divided among the Medes, the Persians, and the (Arab) Elamites. Formerly a fairly civilized nation ruled by a Shah, it became a victim of Islamic revolution in 1979. The nation is today noted for spontaneously taking over other countries' embassies, maintaining whorehouses run by clergymen, involvement in international drug trafficking, and financing sock puppet militias to extend the regime's influence. The word Iran is a cognate form of Aryan. The abbreviation IRGC is the same idea as Stürmabteilung (or SA). The term Supreme Guide is a the modern version form of either Duce or Führer or maybe both. They hate Jews Zionists Jews. Their economy is based on the production of oil and vitriol...
and Hizbullah in the money laundering process.

A former Canadian Royal Mounted Police officer said:"We have seen their continuing affinity (Iranian regime network and Hizbullah) with Chinese network active in illegal activities in Canada," he said, pointing out to "phone calls" between the two parties.

"If we look at the calls that we monitored and the recordings, we will see that some of the calls came from a person officially known to be closely associated with Hizbullah, which is linked to Iran and one of its proxies ... and we will see gangs of Chinese origins and their networks receiving security from Iranian networks," he added.

For his part, former Canadian Immigration Minister Chris Alexander said: "Investigations into these matters are dangerous and complex, but the Canadain authorities are trying to address them. This is a complicated matter in dealing with Iran and its networks."

Canada has listed the Lebanese Hizbullah group as a terrorist organization back in 2002.

Olympics Will Not Tolerate Athletes Protesting, Wearing ‘Black Lives Matter' Apparel
[Federalist] Athletes who wear Black Lives Matter apparel at the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games will face repercussions.

Last month, The International Olympic Committee said athletes are not permitted to protest due to the committee’s stance against "demonstration or political, religious or racial propaganda." Adding to this rule, the committee announced that BLM apparel will be banned. There will be no international fans at the summer games in Tokyo.

"The IOC is very concerned about the risk of politicisation of the athletes and the risk that athletes may be put under external pressure," the group said in April. "It is important to protect athletes from the potential consequences of being placed in a position where they may be forced to take a public position on a particular domestic or international issue, regardless of their beliefs."

While the committee has banned the verbatim phrase "Black Lives Matter" from being advertised or celebrated by athletes, other words like "peace," "respect," "solidarity," "inclusion" and "equality" are permitted. The Olympics group did not say what punishments those who violate the rules will face.

In clarifying its position against athletes protesting during events, the IOC relied on Rule 50, the Olympic Charter’s prohibiting of propaganda. "Divisive disruption" will be characterized in Tokyo as kneeing, making hand gestures that imply a political position, or not allowing a medalist to step up to the podium.

Some groups claim they will provide legal support for athletes that violate the IOC’s rules. An activist group in Germany has announced it will assist those who are "fighting racism."

ISIS claims responsibility for Saturday attacks on Iraqi troops, Peshmerga

(ISIS) on Sunday grabbed credit for a Saturday attack on Iraqi security forces north of Baghdad that killed at least four people.

ISIS claimed, via its propaganda outlet Amaq news agency, that snuffies had planted two Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs) and launched a grenade directly into army barracks in Tarmiyah district, saying they had killed and maimed 16 people.

In a statement on Telegram, Iraq’s security media cell said four soldiers and officers from the army’s 59th brigade were killed in the attack. A source at the time told AFP the attack had been carried out by ISIS, speaking on the condition of anonymity.

Members of the security forces are often targeted by the terror group.

Five Iraqi troops were killed in festivities with ISIS in the same area in February.

ISIS snuffies were also blamed for a Saturday attack against Kurdish Peshmerga forces in Kirkuk province. Three Peshmerga fighters were killed and two were maimed on the Kirkuk-Erbil road close to the village of Qaya Bashi.

In its weekly al-Naba propaganda newspaper released on Thursday, ISIS claimed it had carried out 38 operations across Iraq between April 21 and 28, killing and injuring 74 people.

(ISIS) on Tuesday grabbed credit for a Saturday attack on Peshmerga forces that killed three on the Erbil-Kirkuk road.

ISIS claimed, via its propaganda channels on Telegram, that armed gunnies attacked Peshmerga barracks near Prde (Altun Kupri), north of Kirkuk city, claiming to have killed seven and maimed two others.

The gunnies attacked the Peshmerga’s Brigade 10 on Saturday, which resulted in a 45-minute clash. Peshmerga commander Nuri Hama Ali told Rudaw that three of his fighters were killed and two maimed.

Who were the 21 prisoners who escaped from the southern Iraqi prison?
Background on this story from the other day.
[Rudaw] Twenty-one prisoners beat feet from a prison in al-Muthanna province at dawn on Sunday, according to the governor, who ordered the arrest of prison officials over the incident.

"Twenty-one prisoners who dealt drugs escaped after three in the morning from al-Hilal prison after one of the guards of the prison’s main gate was attacked," Muthanna governor Ahmed Manfi Judah said in a statement.

The governor has ordered the arrest of prison officials and an investigation to determine whether the reason behind the escape was "negligence or deliberate."

Nine of the runaways have been found after a search, Iraq’s security media cell said in a statement released on Telegram.

More than 6,000 people were arrested on suspicion of drug dealing or use across Iraq in the first 11 months of 2020, Mazin al-Quraishi, of the Ministry of Interior’s narcotics directorate, told Rudaw in November.

Iraq’s weak border control has contributed to the growing drug problem.

Around 75 to 80 percent of drugs are smuggled through ports in southern Iraq, as well as the borders with Kuwait and Iran, according to Brigadier Raad Ali Hussein, also from the narcotics directorate.

The Iranian border in particular is vulnerable to drug trafficking "by Iranian citizens who enter the country for tourism and other purposes," he added.

Lebanon rules out preconditions as sea border talks with Israel resume
[ENGLISH.ALARABIYA.NET] Lebanese President Michel Aoun
...president of Leb, a wholly-owned subsidiary of Hizbullah...
said on Tuesday there should be no preconditions for talks with Israel over their Mediterranean border dispute, key to Leb
...an Iranian colony situated on the eastern Mediterranean, conveniently adjacent to Israel. Formerly inhabited by hardy Phoenecian traders, its official language is now Arabic, with the usual unpleasant side effects. The Leb civil war, between 1975 and 1990, lasted a little over 145 years and produced 120,000 fatalities. The average length of a ceasefire was measured in seconds. The Lebs maintain a precarious sectarian balance among Shiites, Sunnis, and about a dozeen flavors of Christians. It is the home of Hezbollah, which periodically starts a war with the Zionist Entity, gets Beirut pounded to rubble, and then declares victory and has a parade. The Lebs have the curious habit of periodically murdering their heads of state or prime ministers...
's hopes to find gas reserves amid its worst economic crisis since its 1975-1990 civil war.

Negotiations between the old foes were launched in October to try to resolve the dispute, which has held up exploration in the potentially gas-rich area, yet the talks have since stalled.
