Military Plane With Iraqi Markings Lands In Venus (Florida)
Plane is a Cessna (see pic at link)
VENUS - A single-engine military airplane with Iraqi Air Force markings made an emergency landing on County Road 731 in Highlands County this afternoon, according to the Highlands County Sheriff's Office. No injuries or damage to the plane were reported.

The plane had markings on it identifying it as belonging to the Iraqi Air Force, the sheriff's office confirmed.

The Department of Homeland Security said the plane was owned by a contractor working for the U.S. military and not by Iraq.
Some Iraqi military pilot cadets are getting some flight training in Florida, my guess.
A deputy will protect the plane until the contractor is able to dismantle it and recover it, said Sheriff Susan Benton. Benton wasn't sure if roads were closed, adding that the plane landed in a "very, very remote area of the county." "We've worked plane crashes before, but nothing that has started out as a military secret event, then turned into a military contractor testing out a plane," Benton said. "Early on there was a real scurry."

A single deputy continued to guard the plane by 9 p.m. as it sat on the west shoulder of the road. Sheriffs deputy Jacob Riley, who was there since 6 that evening, said he had a couple of passersby ask him about it.

Paper and silver foil covered several parts of the plane on its right side. The body of the plane had a marking "Y1 - 138."
Foil, he said. FOIL?!

2. "Owner is Cessna" according to the story. See yesterday's Rantburg post about the Iraqis buying Cessnas for training. Obviously the Florida media don't have a clue about doing research...

#5  The plane's new diesel engine cut out during the flight, and the pilot was forced to land.

Interesting. I always thought diesels were to heavy for airplane engines.

Teen Uses Vehicle To Save Granddad From Bull
LIVINGSTON, Tenn. -- A 13-year-old boy from Overton County managed to save his granddad from a raging bull by using a family vehicle.

On Friday afternoon, Aubrey Presley, 75, was routinely feeding a bull on his son's farm when the animal became enraged and nearly trampled him to death. "I'd already made up in my mind that I wasn't going to make it," said Presley.

Presley believes he owes his life to his grandson. The seventh-grader saw what was happening and used his father's truck to stop the attack. "I was driving right through here and hit the bull, turned and was driving him," said Cole Presley.

The only reason Cole Presley was home that day was because his school was out because of sickness.

Cole's grandpa has six broken ribs and lots of bruises. "I think the good Lord was with him and me too. He just wasnÂ’t ready for me to go," said Aubrey Presley.

Cole Presley told Channel 4 that he believes the bull went crazy because it had been raised as a pet.

Since the teen is under 16 years old, he's not allowed to officially drive, but his parents said his chores sometimes involve driving the truck and hauling farm items.

Dane to promote 'world democracy' waving a white flag in Kabul
A Danish artist will march through the streets of Kabul bearing a white flag as part of a theatre project.
Is he gonna be nekkid? That should go over well.
Residents of Kabul will be greeted with an unusual sight on 28 February when a Danish man carrying a white flag walks through the streets of the war-torn city. Part of a theatre project to promote democracy, Claus Beck-Nielsen will carry the flag of democracy, a white flag with a hole in the middle, where one would normally find a national symbol.
Care to discourse on how much democracy's actually been promoted by that project? Have we seen something like a 30 percent increase in democracy since it started? Is it more than that? A little less, maybe? What quantification methods are they using?
As part of the project, he will walk from the outskirts of Kabul to the National Theatre, a walk, between 10 to 20 km , that will take him onto centre stage where he will become part of the performance.
Holding a white flag with a hole in the middle, kinda like a big cloth donut. Or maybe more like a white flag with a hole shot through it.
The play, 'The Parliament', written by Beck-Nielsen, is about an architect who wants to design and build history's first world parliament and introduce world democracy.
"Based on a true story," no doubt.
However, the endeavour is not without some danger and Beck-Nielsen was concerned about his safety. 'You never know what people will think. I carried flags with a colleague in Iran and we were constantly arrested by the secret police,' he told national broadcaster DR. 'In Kabul, Taleban and government officials, or even a stray Danish soldier from the Helmand province might think I'm doing something dangerous.'
More likely they'll think you're stoopid and maybe slap you around for fun. They do that sort of thing in that part of the world.

#2  Heh, reminds me of something I saw on Futurama last night. Dr. Zoidburg (sp?) species invade Earth and say something to the effect of "The people of Earth will have freedom and democracy as soon as we get done telling them how to do it."

Not a Futurama fan and was busy while that line was said, but seems appropriate here.

I'm Barack Obama's cousin says Raila Odinga
Kenya's defeated presidential challenger Raila Odinga has claimed to be a cousin of Barack Obama and said that they had discussed his country's post-election violence.

Mr Odinga, 63, said that the US senator's father, from western Kenya's Luo tribe, was his maternal uncle. Mr Odinga says that Senator Obama's late father was his uncle on his mother's side. "He has called me to talk about the destabilising constitutional crisis in this country, despite being in the middle of the very busy New Hampshire primary," Mr Odinga said yesterday.

Mr Obama's spokesman Robert Gibbs confirmed that the senator spoke to the Kenyan opposition leader on Monday afternoon for about five minutes before going into a rally in New Hampshire, according to Associated Press. The Democrat would-be presidential candidate is also understood to have tried to speak to President Mwai Kibaki, whose victory in December 27 elections has been widely questioned.

If Barack Obama were in Kenya today, he would "work with the leadership to bring them to a round table and find a solution to the problems that have been ravaging the country"

They would hear his drivel, both sides becoming equally enraged, attack him from both sides and hack him to bits. They would then agree that the best course is to resume fighting to the death.

Jordan admits expelling foreign Christians for 'illegal' preaching
Jordan acknowledged Wednesday that it had expelled foreign Christians for preaching their religion in violation of the law in this predominantly Muslim Arab nation.

The announcement by acting Foreign Minister Nasser Judeh is the first official acknowledgment that the government has clamped down on several foreign Christian preachers, including Americans and other Westerners, Koreans and other Asians, as well Arabs like Egyptians and Sudanese.

Judeh said the preachers came to Jordan under the "pretext of charitable and voluntary activities, but they have violated the law by undertaking preaching activities and were expelled."

Under Jordanian law, the government must sanction preaching and any religious activity, whether Christian or Muslim.

Science & Technology
A Strange Little Company
(Does anything about this little start-up impress you as 'odd'?)

"Thorium Power, Ltd., a development stage company, engages in the development, promotion, and marketing of nuclear fuel designs in the United States. It primarily develops thorium/weapons-grade plutonium disposing fuel, thorium/reactor-grade plutonium disposing fuel, and thorium/uranium nuclear fuel."

Headquarters: McLean, VA

"Thorium Power Appoints Dr. Hans Blix as Senior Advisor"

"...the leading developer of low-waste, non-proliferative nuclear fuel technology for existing and future reactors, today announced that a new formal agreement has been reached with Russia's Kurchatov Institute relating to the irradiation testing program for the Company's fuel designs, which has been ongoing since 2002. The agreement assigns to Thorium Power Inc., a wholly owned subsidiary of Thorium Power, Ltd., the worldwide rights, title and interest in and to the technical data generated from the ampoule irradiation testing of seed and blanket fuel samples in the Kurchatov research reactor over the past two years."
