Dane to promote 'world democracy' waving a white flag in Kabul
2008-02-21
A Danish artist will march through the streets of Kabul bearing a white flag as part of a theatre project.
Is he gonna be nekkid? That should go over well.
Residents of Kabul will be greeted with an unusual sight on 28 February when a Danish man carrying a white flag walks through the streets of the war-torn city. Part of a theatre project to promote democracy, Claus Beck-Nielsen will carry the flag of democracy, a white flag with a hole in the middle, where one would normally find a national symbol.
Care to discourse on how much democracy's actually been promoted by that project? Have we seen something like a 30 percent increase in democracy since it started? Is it more than that? A little less, maybe? What quantification methods are they using?
As part of the project, he will walk from the outskirts of Kabul to the National Theatre, a walk, between 10 to 20 km , that will take him onto centre stage where he will become part of the performance.
Holding a white flag with a hole in the middle, kinda like a big cloth donut. Or maybe more like a white flag with a hole shot through it.
The play, 'The Parliament', written by Beck-Nielsen, is about an architect who wants to design and build history's first world parliament and introduce world democracy.
"Based on a true story," no doubt.
However, the endeavour is not without some danger and Beck-Nielsen was concerned about his safety. 'You never know what people will think. I carried flags with a colleague in Iran and we were constantly arrested by the secret police,' he told national broadcaster DR. 'In Kabul, Taleban and government officials, or even a stray Danish soldier from the Helmand province might think I'm doing something dangerous.'
More likely they'll think you're stoopid and maybe slap you around for fun. They do that sort of thing in that part of the world.

#5  I cant think of one instance where democracy flourished by waiving the white flag. Can anyone else? I bet not.

Some might say he's being sarcastic. Others might say it's a good idea.

#2  Heh, reminds me of something I saw on Futurama last night. Dr. Zoidburg (sp?) species invade Earth and say something to the effect of "The people of Earth will have freedom and democracy as soon as we get done telling them how to do it."

Not a Futurama fan and was busy while that line was said, but seems appropriate here.
