Dead Man Travels Unnoticed on Train
JAKARTA, Indonesia (Map, News) - A dead passenger traveled unnoticed for at least half a day on an executive passenger train, an Indonesian newspaper reported Friday.

Anxious family members found the body of Edy Haryanto, 55, sitting in a locked lavatory on Thursday afternoon, more than a day after he had boarded with a group of friends in the central Javanese town of Tegal, the Warta Kota newspaper reported.

His family became worried when Haryanto didn't get out at the station in Jakarta at the end of the 6-hour journey and his cell phone went unanswered. The body traveled back and forth between Tegal and Jakarta before a janitor told the family he had been unable to clean one lavatory because the door was locked, the report said.

The cause of the death was not immediately clear, but Haryanto had recently suffered a stroke, it said.

Bulgarian nurses may return home by July
SOFIA - Five Bulgarian nurses sentenced to death for infecting Libyan children with HIV may be released by the end of June, a European Union diplomat said on Thursday. German ambassador to Bulgaria, Michael Geier, told Bulgarian daily Sega that talks between the European Commission and Tripoli were likely to ensure the release of the nurses, who have been detained in Libya since 1999.

The five nurses and a Palestinian doctor were convicted in December of deliberately infecting 426 children in the 1990s in a highly politicised trial that hampered Libyan attempts to end decades of diplomatic isolation.

“From the latest information we have in Germany, as a result of activities between the European Commission and Libya we understand that already during the German presidency the Bulgarian medics can go back home,” Geier said. “Of course their return will be bound to certain conditions which at the moment are subject to talks.”

Libya’s Supreme Court is expected to rule on the medics’ appeal next month.

Saudis behead 3 men convicted of murder, robbery
Three Saudis convicted of highway robbery and killing a Pakistani were beheaded on Thursday, the Interior Ministry said in a statement.

The ministry issued a statement that said Mohammed Bin Maktoub, Saad Bin Mubarak and Mishleh Bin Mubarak Bin Mohammed had formed a gang which robbed people at gunpoint and killed a Pakistani, identified as Niyaz Khan Shah. The statement, carried by the official Saudi Press Agency, did not say when or where the murder and robberies were carried out. But it said they were executed in Riyadh, the capital.

Saudi tribe holds camel beauty pageant
This is the strangest story that I have see so far today out of the Middle East. Hat tip to Little Green Footballs.
GUWEI'IYYA, Saudi Arabia (Reuters) - The legs are long, the eyes are big, the bodies curvaceous. Contestants in this Saudi-style beauty pageant have all the features you might expect anywhere else in the world, but with one crucial difference -- the competitors are camels.

This week, the Qahtani tribe of western Saudi Arabia has been welcoming entrants to its Mazayen al-Ibl competition, a parade of the "most beautiful camels" in the desolate desert region of Guwei'iyya, 120 km (75 miles) west of Riyadh. "In Lebanon they have Miss Lebanon," jokes Walid, moderator of the competition's Web site. "Here we have Miss Camel."

While tremendous oil wealth has brought rapid modernisation to the desert state of Saudi Arabia, the camel remains celebrated as a symbol of the traditional nomadic lifestyle of Bedouin Arabs. Throughout history camels have served multiple purposes as food, friend, transport and war machine. They were key to the Arab conquests of the Middle East and North Africa nearly 1,400 years ago that brought Islam to the world.

Camels are also big business in a country where strict Islamic laws and tribal customs would make it impossible for women to take part in their own beauty contest.

Delicate females or strapping males who attract the right attention during this week's show could sell for a million or more riyals. Sponsors have provided 10 million riyals (1.36 million pounds) for the contest, cash that also covers the 72 sports utility vehicles to be will be awarded as prizes.

"Bedouin Arabs are intimately connected to camels and they want to preserve this heritage. The importance of this competition is that it helps preserve the pure-breds," said Sheikh Omair, one of the tribe's leaders. "We have more than 250 owners taking part and more than 1,500 camels," he said inside a huge tent where the final awards ceremony takes place.

Over at the camel pen, the contestants are getting restless as the desert wind howls and whips up swirls of sand in the hot afternoon sun. Camel-drivers sing songs of praise to their prized possessions as they try to calm the animals down.

Amid a large crowd of Bedouin who have gathered to watch, the head of the judging committee emerges to venture into an enclosure with some two dozen angry braying camels. "Beautiful, beautiful!" the judge mutters quietly to himself, inspecting the group. Finalists have been decorated with silver bands and body covers.

"The nose should be long and droop down, that's more beautiful," explains Sultan al-Qahtani, one of the organisers. "The ears should stand back, and the neck should be long. The hump should be high, but slightly to the back."

The camels are divided into four categories according to breed -- the black majaheem, white maghateer, dark brown shi'l and the sufur, which are beige with black shoulders. Arabic famously has over 40 terms for different types of camel.

Some females have harnesses strapped around their genitalia to thwart any efforts by the males to mount them. One repeat offender called Marjaa has been moved away. "This one would fetch a million!" says Hamad al-Sudani, a camel-driver, admiring the heavy stud, or fahl.

And sometimes, much more than just a "friend".

Bedouin Arabs are intimately connected to camels

Usually after dark.

Arabic famously has over 40 terms for different types of camel.

Besides "hottie" and "vixen" they also include such endearments as "sweetheart", "honey" and "darling".

Some females have harnesses strapped around their genitalia to thwart any efforts by the males to mount them.

Tiger kills 1 in Sundarbans
A Royal Bengal tiger killed a honey collector near Haridhali canal in the Sundarbans on Wednesday afternoon. The victim was identified as Abu Hasan, 35, son of Aziz Dhali of village Burigoalini in Shyamnagar upazila. Police said the victim along with 15 others went to the mangrove forest on April 20 to collect honey by taking permission from Burigoalini forest office. While they were collecting honey from beehives near Haridhali canal, a Royal Bengal tiger swooped on Hasan and dragged him into the deep forest, police quoting witnesses said. Other honey collectors later recovered the body.

University memorializes Oklahoma bomber
The University of Oklahoma has put up a memorial to a student who blew himself up outside the school's packed football stadium in an incident some believe was tied to Islamic jihad. A stone with the name of Joel Hinrichs III was placed outside the OU student union by the student affairs division, reports KOCO-TV in Oklahoma City.

Hinrichs' father, Joel Hinrichs Jr., has insisted his son meant only to kill himself Oct. 1, 2005, and FBI investigators said they found no ties to terrorist organizations. But as WND reported, investigators found "Islamic Jihad" material in his apartment, and he reportedly attended a nearby mosque – the same one attended by Zacharias Moussaoui, the only person charged in connection with the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks.

Hinrichs' father said the university offered to have the stone placed. Families normally pay about $150 for such memorials, and Hinrichs has offered to pay for it, reported the Oklahoma City TV station. But the university has not sent him a bill.

The stadium was filled with 84,000 spectators when the 21-year-old student blew himself on a park bench 173 yards away during the second quarter of a night game against Kansas State.

India-Pakistan
Curtain down on burqa drama
The government has for the meantime banned a satirical play about the burqa, Culture Minister Dr Ghazi Gulab Jamal told the National Assembly on Thursday. ‘Burqavaganza’ played earlier this month at the Panjpani Indo-Pak Theatre Festival in Lahore.
“The burqa is part of our culture. We can’t allow anyone to ridicule our culture,” Dr Jamal said.
“The burqa is part of our culture. We can’t allow anyone to ridicule our culture,” Dr Jamal said in response to a call-attention notice moved by MMA women. He said the play had been banned, but a final decision on whether to allow it would be made after government officials view CDs of it. “They have committed blasphemy against the Prophet (peace be upon him),” Razia Aziz of the MMA said, demanding stern action against the people behind the play. “We can only cancel their licence after seeing the CDs,” the minister said. Mehnaz Rafi of the PML and Sherry Rehman of the PPP criticised the decision. “A few people cannot dictate affairs of the state. Every person has the right to lead his life his own way. A few people cannot snatch freedom from society,” Rafi said.

#3  I'm thinking that Razia Aziz would have a hard time rationally arguing that “They have committed blasphemy against the Prophet" by ridculing the burqa. The Qu'ranic principle which requires women to dress modestly in public does not seem to mean that women should cover themselves from head to toe in a potato sack.
If so why aren't burqas worn by all Muslim women? I'm quessing that Mohammed had been dead 300-500 years before the burqa was introduced.
OTOH, why should rational thought stand in Aziz' path.

Jordanian police arrest man for honour killing
AMMAN, Jordan - Jordanian authorities arrested a man accused of killing his 30-year-old sister on suspicion that she had a love affair, even though he had earlier signed a pledge to the police that he would not harm her, a police official said on Thursday. The crime, which took place in the eastern industrial city of Zarqa on Wednesday, brings to eight the total number of women killed since January in what is known as “honour crimes.”

An average of 20 women are killed by male relatives each year in Jordan.

The police official said the suspect allegedly sprayed his sister with seven bullets in broad daylight and fled the crime scene. The woman died instantly of her wounds, the official said. She had been under police protection for 15 days and was allowed to go home the day she was killed, after her father and brother pledged not to harm her. “The brother ignored his signed oath and shot her in cold blood on their way home,” the official said.

A young boy nearby heard the gunshots and found the woman lying in the street, covered with blood, with some empty shells near her body.

The brother, in his mid-20s, was arrested shortly afterward and later confessed to his crime. He is to stand trial soon at Jordan’s criminal court. His name and that of his victim were not revealed.

#1  Why bother to arrest him? According to Islamic law, if he even only believed that his action would uphold Islamic morality he will get off scot-free.

Of course Jordanians may not officially live under Islamic law, but what difference does it make if people still live as if they did?

Jewish Bores Boars raid Paleo garbage trucks
A herd of wild boars on Tuesday attacked the cleaning workers of Salfit municipality while they were emptying a garbage truck. The wild boars are being released by Israeli settlers in order to destroy the plants and crops of Palestinians.

The display also features Tinkerbell, Hilton's forlorn pet Chihuahua with matching tiara, and debuts in the trendy Williamsburg, Brooklyn neighborhood where prom-goers frequently dine, courtesy of Capla Kesting Fine Art.

"Campaign to Rescue Women of Youth" featuring "The Paris Hilton Autopsy" offers a cadaveric nude Paris Hilton, laid out with twisted body and opened abdominal cavity on a coroner's table, while her cell phone remains in her grip.
