-Lurid Crime Tales-
Suspects Injured During Home Invasion
(03/10/07-- FAYETTEVILLE) - Two men are in custody after a home invasion in Fayetteville sent one of the suspects to the hospital.
Actually both of them went to the hospital, read on.
Cumberland County Sheriff's detectives arrested and charged 20-year-old Paul Kent, Jr. and 18-year-old Carlos Francisco Mozzo of attempted first degree burglary and robbery with a deadly weapon. The men allegedly entered the home of 66-year-old James Wiggins Friday evening.

Wiggins told detectives his dog alerted him to the men approaching his home. That's when he retrieved a gun from his bedroom. Wiggins said when the suspects forced open his back door, he began firing his gun.
and allegedly shot them inside his house that they had allegedly just entered, sending them to a definite hospital.
Kent suffered a gunshot wound under his eye and was treated and released from the hospital. He is being held at the Cumberland County Detention Center under $50,000 bond.
(Check out Kent's mugshot at the link)
Mozzo's injured (sic) included a gunshot wound to his leg and one to his torso. He is at Duke Medical Center. Upon recovery from his wounds. authorities will transport Mozzo back to Cumberland County to face charges.
Unless he dies first, but we probably aren't that lucky.
At least Mike Nifong won't be trying him.

That facial wound doesn't look very impressive.

#4  Someone, get this old man a better gun and send him to the range. These perps should be turning green in the coroners cold storage locker, not awaiting prosecution.

#5  hell you gotta give the man props though at least he tried too kill them, and the wound unger the eye could have grazed him so he might have actually blew his brains out, by the way a 22 will kil you

#6  I was thinking .22 also, it's true a .22 can kill you, but a .38 won't ricochet off a cheekbone like that, it'll punch on through.

#7  ...but a .38 won't ricochet off a cheekbone like that, it'll punch on through.

I wouldn't put that much stock in a .38 either. There have been documented instances of non jacketed .38 rounds flattening themselves out on folks skulls. Especially folks of a particular ethnic heritage. Nothing less than a round starting with .4x for me.

#8  Maybe he's just as well off he didn't kill them. I've never shot anything but paper (and some AOL disks) and am glad for it. I don't want to know how I'd feel if I killed someone, even someone who richly deserves it.

#15  Bad guy Kent saw the flame shoot out from the gun barrel, felt the hit on his cheek, and saw more flames coming at him - it may have reminded him he had pressing appointments elsewhere. If Kent and Carlos do not like jail, perhaps they could go back to Wiggins' house for more lessons in good manners.

Ultimate irony: Meat fire brings down barbecued tofu joint
The ultimate irony struck before dawn Wednesday in Hyde Park when perhaps the oldest vegetarian restaurant in Austin was torched accidentally by a homeless guy cooking — steaks.

When I heard that Mother's Cafe & Garden at 4215 Duval St. had burned, I wondered how that could happen. A fire at a veghead place? Have you ever tried to set fire to a zucchini? How's a fire break out at a place without a grease trap?

Besides, a vegetarian joint ought to get better fire protection than a meat place.

Bert's Bar-B-Q near the University of Texas was damaged in a fire after a 911 dispatcher didn't send firetrucks because he thought the place was cooking brisket. But if smoke pours out of a vegetarian restaurant, you don't figure somebody's grilling an eggplant.

So, when I heard that a street dude known as Roadie had accidentally burned down the outdoor garden at Mother's when he fell asleep after starting a "cook fire" to do some steaks, I thought that it was horrible but that a higher being has a twisted sense of humor.

So, what kind of steaks was the guy doing? "I have no idea," said Cameron Alexander, one of the owners of Mother's. "There was also a can of dog food back there that made me wonder because I'm not sure he had a dog."

Mother's will be 27 years old June 6. Alexander said one of the insurance people told him that it'll take five months to put the place back together entirely. The outdoor garden seating area was destroyed. The interior will have to be remodeled.

It may be the first time that steaks have ever been done at Mother's, and Alexander sees the irony. "That was Ed Clements' crack this morning on the radio," said Alexander, referring to the KLBJ commentator. He said the other irony is that the restaurant donated the prepared food that it couldn't serve to Caritas, a charity that will probably give the food to the homeless.

"They got a van here right away so homeless people would get a bunch of lasagna," Alexander said.

Alexander isn't feeling particularly charitable with John Evans, aka Roadie, who admitted that he accidentally torched Mother's after falling asleep while cooking in an alcove behind the restaurant. Evans was not charged. "He's been a regular pain in the (caboose)," Alexander said. "We've had a trespassing warrant on the guy. We've shooed him away a number of times, made him take his grocery cart away. He berates the customers for unknown reasons, hits people up for change, and on top of that, he's kind of an ornery, mean guy. He's had this ongoing yelling thing with one of our managers."

Sadly, Alexander said, March is the busiest month for the restaurant. So, he's thinking about setting up some tents soon and serving to-go food to keep his employees in paychecks until Mother's can reopen. He's also considering coming up with a funny T-shirt to commemorate the tragedy.

My T-shirt suggestion was "Mother's: No shirt, no shoes, no hobos cookin' steaks." Alexander liked the sound of it. Heck, I'd buy two or three of 'em.

Huh. Maybe I should look into this. Apparently they've discovered a way of cooking vegetables without a heat source. Me, I still gotta use the stove to steam some broccoli, and last I heard French fries still required grease of some sort.

Maybe Mother's microwaves all their food. Must be yummy.

...the restaurant donated the prepared food that it couldn't serve to Caritas...

I first misread this as Carnitas.

$25,000 diamond found in shower drain
ORANGE, California - A $25,000 diamond was found stuck in a shower drain at the prison housing the man accused of stealing it two years ago. Bret Allen Langford, 39, allegedly asked the owner of a jewellery store to show him a 2-carat colourless diamond in April 2005. Langford then grabbed the diamond and sped away, said sheriff’s spokesman Jim Amormino.

Langford was arrested shortly after but the police did not retrieve the diamond. Langford was charged with commercial burglary and, after several transfers, ended up at a jail in Orange, California, where he awaited trial.

This week, an investigator representing Langford told jail officials to search the jailhouse drains if they wanted to find the diamond. Officials discovered the rock wedged in a screen beneath one of the facility’s shower stalls.

#3  It's typical for jewel snatchers to swallow the goods, so they are usually x-rayed. But an inventive fellow had a better idea. After he palmed a stone, then flipped a stone-sized piece of glass across the room, he put the real stone in a piece of gum he had been chewing, and stuck it to the underside of a table in the store.

He figured a confederate would later recover the stone. And it might have worked except he had a years old outstanding warrant for an unrelated offense that he didn't even know about.

Weeks later, while cleaning the store, they found the gum with the diamond in it.

So they added an additional charge to his old offense.

Australian Army on stand-by as cyclones hit Queensland
The toll from Cyclone George, which ravaged the WA coast last week, has risen to three with the death of a Queensland man in hospital today. Police said 42-year-old Craig Allan Raabe from Gympie died in Perth this morning from his injuries suffered during Cyclone George. He was an employee at the Fortescue Metals Group mining camp where 47-year-old Perth woman Debra Till died, Police spokeswoman Ros Weatherall said. Sydney Desmond Baker, 74, died at Indee Station of a heart attack during the cyclone.

Residents of Pilbara in WA are battening down the hatches in preparation for another walloping, with Cyclone Jacob on its way. Cyclone Jacob is set to hit the Pilbara coastline overnight but has been downgraded to a category one cyclone. At 3pm today, it was 280km west-northwest of Karratha and 430km west-northwest of Port Hedland and moving east-southeast at 17km/h.

Gales with gusts to 100km/h may develop on the Pilbara coast between Onslow and Whim Creek tonight, possibly extending to other parts of the warning zone overnight, the Bureau of Meteorology said. Tropical Cyclone Jacob was expected to impact on the coast overnight and into tomorrow and was unlikely to significantly intensify before making landfall, and may continue to weaken.

Actually they're hitting the other side of Australia - West Australia. We (Queensland) were hit last year by cyclone Larry and can certainly do without another one this year.
