Boy Left In Chuck E. Cheeze Hell
Boy, 6, In State Custody After Being Left At His Own Birthday Party
WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. -- A 6-year-old boy who was accidentally left behind by his family after they celebrated his birthday at a Chuck E. Cheese's restaurant will temporarily remain in state custody, a judge ruled Monday. The state Department of Children and Families will likely determine Tuesday whether Michael James Emanuel Jr. can live temporarily with a relative, Palm Beach County Juvenile Judge Ronald Alvarez said. Emanuel's family said they accidentally left him Saturday night and didn't notice he was missing until the next day. Each relative thought the child was with another family member, they told police.

Employees at the Boca Raton restaurant called police, and the child was taken into state custody, Palm Beach County sheriff's spokesman Paul Miller said Monday. Diane Duvall, an attorney for the boy's mother, Lacqetta Monroe, 23, told the judge there were 12 kids at the party and as they all piled into cars to leave, the boy was simply overlooked.

Duvall declined to comment on the case outside court. It was not immediately clear how long the child would remain in state custody since juvenile cases are confidential. The state Department of Children and Families also declined to comment. Monroe's telephone number was not listed under her name. No criminal charges have been filed.

#4  The PTSD that some of the soldiers are experiencing is now of two types. The first is traditional combat stress, or shell shock.

But a new and strange kind of stress is more of a realization that in Iraq and Afghanistan they had a deep and abiding, life or death purpose; where even the smallest things they did were of immense value.

That purpose just cannot be replicated in the civilian world, even in high-risk jobs. There is no great dependency, no great menace, a lack of structure and the stress which forces excellence.

It is not surprising that re-enlistment rates are sky high. The very idea of returning home to an ordinary job and boredom is painful.

I hesitate to predict what are the long-term psychological problems that may come of this. Probably rampant republicanism, for one.

Hell has number of the beast
THEY're definitely planning a hot time in Hell tomorrow. The day bears the date of 6-6-06, abbreviated as 666 - the number that, according to the Bible's Book of Revelation, signifies the beast, or the antichrist, according to the apocalyptic theories.

And there is not a snowball's chance in Hell that the day will go unnoticed in the unincorporated hamlet that carries the name 100km west of Detroit.

Nobody is more fired up than John Colone, the town's self-styled mayor and owner of a souvenir shop. "I've got '666' T-shirts and mugs. I'm only ordering 666 (of the items) so once they're gone, that's it," said Mr Colone, also known as Odum Plenty. "Everyone who comes will get a letter of authenticity saying you've celebrated June 6, 2006, in Hell."

Most of Mr Colone's wares will sell for $US6.66 ($8.86), including deeds to one square inch of Hell.

Live entertainment and a costume contest are planned. The Gates of Hell should be installed at a children's play area in time for the festivities. "They're 8ft (2.4m) tall and 5ft (1.5m) wide and each gate looks like flames, and when they're closed it's a devil's head," Mr Colone told The Detroit News.

Mike "Smitty" Hickey, owner of the Dam Site Inn, was not sure what kind of clientele would show up on the day. "We're all about having fun here. I don't think we're going to get the cult crowd, the devil-worshippers or anything like that," Mr Hickey said.
Of course they're all about having fun -- they're Australians ferchrissakes.
The 666 revelry is just the latest chapter in the town's storied history of publicity stunts, said Jason LeTeff, one of its 72 year-round residents - or, as the mayor calls them, Hellions or Hell-billies. But Mr LeTeff was not particularly enthusiastic. "Here I am living in Hell, taking my kids to church and trying to teach them the right things, and the town is having a 6-6-6 party," he said.

When Washing Machines Attack!
ST. PAUL — A man was injured by an explosion after he put gasoline instead of detergent into a washing machine, police said.
Words fail me..
The explosion Saturday blew off the door to a laundry room in the man's apartment in the Summit-University neighborhood, Deputy Chief Mike Hogan said. There was no damage to the six apartment units in the building or other injuries.

The 49-year-old man had what appeared to be second-degree burns on up to 5 percent of his lower legs, Hogan said. Paramedics took him to Regions Hospital.
Described by neighbors as a "idiot" "backyard mechanic," the man was using gasoline to wash his grease-soaked clothes for some reason and "didn't think anything of it," Hogan said. The hot water heater or another source ignited a fire that led to the explosion, he said.

Europe
Chirac's Bank Holiday ban is ignored as workers take the day off
The collapse of President Chirac’s authority will be exposed today when most French people blithely ignore his decision to make Whit Monday a normal working day.

Although the Bank Holiday has been abolished officially, even state employees are refusing to work. Schools, post offices and museums will close for the day and the state railway network will be offering a reduced service.

As if to underline M Chirac’s declining power, his ministers have been unable to impose the reform on their own ministries, which are also stopping work. In the private sector nearly half of French businesses will be on holiday, while the rest will remain open.

Road haulage groups are particularly aggrieved. The Finance Ministry has told them to operate as usual, while the Transport Ministry has implemented Bank Holiday road safety measures, which involve the banning of lorries.

Jean-Michel Thénard, a columnist for the newspaper Libération, said that France was slipping into a “surrealist world” governed by M Chirac’s “absurd poetry”.

“Employees are going to go to work, but they are going to have to find someone to look after the children because the schools are shut, check which trains are running and refrain from posting letters,” he wrote.

The chaos stems from a government decision to levy a 0.3 per cent corporate tax to fund a €2 billion scheme to help the elderly and the disabled. The tax, introduced after the 2003 heatwave that killed almost 15,000 elderly people in France, was to be financed by a Day of Solidarity, an extra seven-hour working day, which the Government decided would be Whit Monday.

But the first Journée de Solidarité last year turned into a fiasco amid a nationwide wave of strikes and protests. Many workers said that they were in favour of solidarity, but not if it meant losing one of their 11 annual Bank Holidays.

Dominique de Villepin, the Prime Minister, tried to calm the revolt by telling employees that they could put in the extra seven hours at any time during the year. In effect, Whit Monday has become an optional Bank Holiday to be negotiated between staff and management in each firm; a situation that even M de Villepin admits will produce “difficulties and perhaps even incoherence”.

He has achieved the remarkable feat of getting French unions to unite with their traditional enemy — the country’s employers — in opposing him.

Laurence Parisot, the chairwoman of the French Employers’ Federation, said: “How can you tell firms to work and then ban road transport?” François Chérèque, leader of the French Democratic Workers’ Federation, said: “There will be strikes in many firms and the strikes are right.”

The chaos is likely to inflict further damage on M Chirac, whose approval rating has plummeted to 17 per cent.

Southeast Asia
Java earthquake stimulates volcano
Fresh spurts of lava from a nearby volcano and deteriorating sanitary conditions added to the strain yesterday for hundreds of thousands of survivors of Indonesia's devastating earthquake.

Mount Merapi, one of the world's most active volcanos, spewed more lava and hot clouds of gas and ash yesterday, said Sugiono, a government scientist. Like many Indonesians, he uses one name. The volcano is north of Yogyakarta, the main city in the densely populated area of Java island hit by May 27's magnitude 6.3 quake.

Merapi's lava dome has swelled in the past week to 100m, raising fears that it could collapse, officials said. That could release a highly dangerous pyroclastic flow -- a fast-moving burst of high-temperature gases and rock fragments -- burning anything in its path, the government vulcanology center warned.

Scientists say the quake may have contributed to a weakening of the lava dome. More than a thousand aftershocks have hit the region since the earthquake struck before dawn just over a week ago, killing at least 6,234 people and injuring 30,000 more. Officials estimate that 135,000 homes were destroyed.
There is another article at Antara News that indicates it's about to blow, but for some reason I can't select from the web page.

In other words it is not a racist slur, I am slagging off a group of people not defined by race but by politics and ideological outlook.

And it just so happens this volcano is right in their power-base heartland the island of Java.

Home Front: Culture Wars
Chill out on global warming!!
By David Harsanyi
Denver Post Staff Columnist

You'll often hear the left lecture about the importance of dissent in a free society.

Why not give it a whirl?

Start by challenging global warming hysteria next time you're at a LoDo cocktail party and see what happens.

Admittedly, I possess virtually no expertise in science. That puts me in exactly the same position as most dogmatic environmentalists who want to craft public policy around global warming fears.

The only inconvenient truth about global warming, contends Colorado State University's Bill Gray, is that a genuine debate has never actually taken place. Hundreds of scientists, many of them prominent in the field, agree.

Gray is perhaps the world's foremost hurricane expert. His Tropical Storm Forecast sets the standard. Yet, his criticism of the global warming "hoax" makes him an outcast.

"They've been brainwashing us for 20 years," Gray says. "Starting with the nuclear winter and now with the global warming. This scare will also run its course. In 15-20 years, we'll look back and see what a hoax this was."

Gray directs me to a 1975 Newsweek article that whipped up a different fear: a coming ice age.

"Climatologists," reads the piece, "are pessimistic that political leaders will take any positive action to compensate for the climatic change. ... The longer the planners delay, the more difficult will they find it to cope with climatic change once the results become grim reality."

Thank God they did nothing. Imagine how warm we'd be?

Another highly respected climatologist, Roger Pielke Sr. at the University of Colorado, is also skeptical.

Pielke contends there isn't enough intellectual diversity in the debate. He claims a few vocal individuals are quoted "over and over" again, when in fact there are a variety of opinions.

I ask him: How do we fix the public perception that the debate is over?

"Quite frankly," says Pielke, who runs the Climate Science Weblog (climatesci.atmos.colostate.edu), "I think the media is in the ideal position to do that. If the media honestly presented the views out there, which they rarely do, things would change. There aren't just two sides here. There are a range of opinions on this issue. A lot of scientists out there that are very capable of presenting other views are not being heard."

Al Gore (not a scientist) has definitely been heard

- and heard and heard. His documentary, "An Inconvenient Truth," is so important, in fact, that Gore crisscrosses the nation destroying the atmosphere just to tell us about it.

"Let's just say a crowd of baby boomers and yuppies have hijacked this thing," Gray says. "It's about politics. Very few people have experience with some real data. I think that there is so much general lack of knowledge on this. I've been at this over 50 years down in the trenches working, thinking and teaching."

Gray acknowledges that we've had some warming the past 30 years. "I don't question that," he explains. "And humans might have caused a very slight amount of this warming. Very slight. But this warming trend is not going to keep on going. My belief is that three, four years from now, the globe will start to cool again, as it did from the middle '40s to the middle '70s."

Both Gray and Pielke say there are many younger scientists who voice their concerns about global warming hysteria privately but would never jeopardize their careers by speaking up.

"Plenty of young people tell me they don't believe it," he says. "But they won't touch this at all. If they're smart, they'll say: 'I'm going to let this run its course.' It's a sort of mild McCarthyism. I just believe in telling the truth the best I can. I was brought up that way."

So next time you're with some progressive friends, dissent. Tell 'em you're not sold on this global warming stuff.

Back away slowly. You'll probably be called a fascist.

Don't worry, you're not. A true fascist is anyone who wants to take away my air conditioning or force me to ride a bike.

#1  Hence the shift to "climate change". You can't be wrong, the grant money keeps rolling in, and craziest of all,it keeps some people actually listening to what Al Gore has to say...
Posted by: tu3031 || 06/05/2006 21:11 Comments || Top||

#2  "To ride a bike" - Not exactly. A COMMIE does what you are describing but does so in the name of progress, i.e. evolution = devolution. Commie > must also be his idea of a Bike =Air Con where you and the masses are only USERS, NOT OWNERS. Like a Warlord or Bandit-Slaver, the Commie is the Sole Owner, NOT everyone else or below him. A FASCIST will imprison or destroy you for not only NOT having or owning a bike = air con, but also NOT having or owning the BEST BIKE = AIR CON AVAILABLE. A Fascist will also demand to know why you are driving a bike, albeit a good or excellent bike, NOT a regular or techy Car.

Community activist quits after arrest
Arrested in a crackdown on a numbers-running ring, Latino community activist Cristobal Lopez stepped down Friday from a volunteer post on a Nassau County agency, a spokesman for County Executive Thomas Suozzi said Friday.

Lopez, 48, of Rockville Centre, is "taking a leave of absence, effective immediately" from his unpaid position on the board of directors of Nassau's Coordinated Agency for Spanish Americans, or CASA, said Joe Calderone, a spokesman for Suozzi. CASA coordinates services for the Latino community.

Lopez, former president of the Freeport Neighborhood Association, was one of a dozen men and women arrested Wednesday after a 14-month Nassau County police probe. The suspects ran numbers out of bodegas and delis in Freeport and Rockville Centre raking in about $65,000 a day, the police said.

The numbers game is popular among undocumented immigrants who fear playing the state lottery because if they try to collect winnings, they might have to reveal their illegal status, Nassau police said.
