S.Africa: 15 Man Gang storm Casino in hail AK47 of gunfire
Well, if you put it into perspective for modern day south africa, they didn't gangrape or torture anybody, didn't put flaming tires around peoples' necks, so , it's pretty much a victimless crime.

Headline of the Week
Ass chewing starts fight

A donkey at an Algerian market ate the money of a man who came to buy him, making the unfortunate buyer and the owner wonder who the animal belongs to, an Algerian newspaper reported.

Neither the district court nor the city court was able to make a ruling that would satisfy both parties, so the case was passed on to the Algerian Supreme Court.

-Signs, Portents, and the Weather-
The mystery of the giant stone heads
Police are on the trail of a shadowy figure who has been dumping giant carved stone heads on village doorsteps at dead of night. . . .

First reports of the discarded heads emerged last week when Fiona Gould, who runs the Forresters Arms hotel in Kilburn, found one on her patio. Five more were discovered in other parts of the village. She said: "Some people think it's a curse - but we have no idea who we might have offended. One woman claims there's a link to werewolves."

Each of the foot-high stones had the hand-written rhyme:

Twinkle, twinkle, like a star.
Does love flourish from afar?

taped to it. There was also a symbol on the reverse similar to the religious "chi-rho" sign with letters added which also could spell the word "paradox".

Lake Peigneur: The Swirling Vortex of Doom
Early in the morning on November 21, 1980, twelve men decided to abandon their oil drilling rig on the suspicion that it was beginning to collapse beneath them. They had been probing for oil under the floor of Lake Peigneur when their drill suddenly seized up at about 1,230 feet below the muddy surface, and they were unable free it. In their attempts to work the drill loose, which is normally fairly easy at that shallow depth, the men heard a series of loud pops, just before the rig tilted precariously towards the water.

At the time, Lake Peigneur was an unremarkable body of water near New Iberia, Louisiana. Though the freshwater lake covered 1,300 acres of land, it was only eleven feet deep. A small island there was home to a beautiful botanical park, oil wells dotted the landscape, and far beneath the lake were miles of tunnels for the Diamond Crystal salt mine.

Concluding that something had gone terribly wrong, the men on the rig cut the attached barges loose, scrambled off the rig, and moved to the shore about 300 yards away. Shortly after they abandoned the $5 million Texaco drilling platform, the crew watched in amazement as the huge platform and derrick overturned, and disappeared into a lake that was supposed to be shallow. Soon the water around that position began to turn. It was slow at first, but it steadily accelerated until it became a fast-moving whirlpool a quarter of a mile in diameter, with its center directly over the drill site. . . .

#2  The History Channel program on the Lake Peigneur disaster (no deaths or injuries, but some truly spectacular property destruction) is a must-see. Absolutely fascinating.

The mishap began with a surveying error, which caused the oil drilling rig to puncture into an active, working salt mine (instead of proceeding downward alongside it). The lake rapidly drained into the mine, steadily enlarging the drill hole to the point where entire barges were sucked down into the vortex. The canal which normally drains the lake into the Gulf of Mexico began to flow backwards, and the Gulf promptly topped off the mine-- at which point all the barges and other debris that had been sucked down the hole, popped back up to the surface again.

It was a truly spectacular fuckup, and a royal mess. If you ever get a chance to watch the program, do.

Britain
Protesters arrested at Scotland naval base
Dozens of anti-nuclear protesters were arrested Monday as they marked the end of a year-long campaign at a submarine base in Scotland, police said. An estimated 500 demonstrators descended on Faslane Naval Base, on the River Clyde, home of the UK's Trident fleet of nuclear submarines, early today.
Many of them started blockading the main entrance by gluing themselves to the tarmac outside and chaining themselves together and to the fence. Police moved in quickly to start removing the demonstrators, making 94 arrests. Witnesses spoke of a "continuous" stream of people being carried off by teams of officers.

The protesters were marking the end of "Faslane 365", a year-long campaign against the hosting of the Trident fleet in Scotland. It has led to more than 940 arrests and a recent report showed the cost of policing the base has exceeded five million pounds. Organisers of today's action vowed to mark the occasion through "colourful, creative, and dramatic actions" at the base. Coachloads of people started arriving early this morning, when they were greeted by a large police presence.

Protesters blocked the entrance to the main gate by lying on the ground with their arms linked by tubes. Police used special cutting equipment to free them, before carrying them away to applause from the crowd. Police urged motorists to avoid the area around the base while the protest lasts. A spokesman for Faslane Naval Base said the protests had not had an effect on the main operations and people inside. He said "They have not really affected us at all." "Some gates have been closed as they have been this morning, but they have never affected the main priority of the base," the spokesman added.

China-Japan-Koreas
South Korean president crosses border for summit
South Korea's president, Roh Moo-hyun, today walked across the heavily armed border with North Korea on his way to a summit in Pyongyang. His meeting with the midget North Korean leader, Kim Jong-il, is only the second such summit between the countries. Mr Roh, who has just five months left in office, said he would use the talks to press for peace and an eventual arms cut for the two states, which remain technically at war since the 1950-53 Korean war ended in a ceasefire.

Crossing the border near the North Korean city of Kaesong, the South Korean delegation was greeted by North Korean officials. Mr Roh and his wife, Kwon Yang-sook, stepped across a yellow plastic strip marked with the words "peace" and "prosperity" which was laid across the line that divides the two countries. "This line is a wall that has divided the nation for a half-century. Our people have suffered from too many hardships and development has been held up due to this wall," Mr Roh said. "This line will be gradually erased and the wall will fall. I will make efforts to make my walk across the border an occasion to remove the forbidden wall and move toward peace and prosperity."

Scrappleface: Edwards Takes Public Cash to Identify with Poor
Scott Ott's on a roll lately...
In a reversal of a previous decision, Democrat presidential candidate John Edwards announced Thursday that his campaign would accept public funding “as a matter of principle to demonstrate that I identify with the poor and downtrodden who live in the second America.”

The decision, which Mr. Edwards noted is “consistent with my previous statements to the contrary,” could ultimately bring $105 million to his campaign if he should secure the Democrat nomination.

“I’ve raised enough money, and personally have enough money, to run this campaign without taxpayer dollars,” said Mr. Edwards, “but if I did that, I’d be nothing but another fat cat with a rich crony network living in the first America — unable to relate to the ordinary working poor, the non-working poor, the undocumented poor and all the other little people who populate the other America.”

The former senator from North Carolina explained that the common bond shared by those in the “second America” is their dependence upon redistributed taxpayer dollars.

By receiving federal matching funds, he said he’ll be able to “relate better to my brothers and sisters whose hope rests confidently in the goodness and power of our benevolent federal government.”
