Economy
Ready, Debt, Go -- BILL READER
In honor of the new Republican majority I would like to take today out to discuss -- in basic and easily communicated terms -- a favorite topic of conservatives everywhere. Today I devote to debt, particularly public debt, and the problems therewith. And while virtually all of Sarah's [Hoyt] readers except for trolls are probably already well-versed in this issue, my goal here is to sum it up in sufficiently plain and direct terms that it can only be misunderstood with great effort. Granted, there are layers of unexplored obtuseness out there that assure no one can get through everyone's head, but I'm going to give this my best shot.

The thing to bear in mind in the ensuing discussion is this: not only are Democrats not serious about combating public debt, but they are ideologically and structurally interested in its expansion. Understanding that fact makes it very easy to comprehensively predict and contextualize the entire response of the left to debt.

Why Democrats got a drubbing
JAMAL DOUMANI
[ARABNEWS] Over the last six years, President Obama's administration has shown itself to be a dismal failure in its domestic policy as in its foreign policy. That at least appears to be the verdict of voters in the mid-term elections held last Tuesday across the US.

For most Americans, domestic policy translates primarily as how well the economy is managed and President Obama has led a nation during his tenure that suffered a prolonged six-year economic decline.

Geo Will: Time to rethink Hillary Clinton 2016
[WAPO] “She is smart, tough and savvy and has a capacity to learn from failure and adjust. But . . . people are bored of her and feel like she has been talking at them forever. . . . She is a dull, grating, inauthentic, over-eager, insipid elitist with ideological blinders yet no particular vision and is likely to be reduced to running on a dubious promise of experience and competence while faking idealism and hope — a very common type of presidential contender in both parties, but one that almost always loses.”
They're toast, both Slick and the Beest. The failed midterm election was their death knell.

India-Pakistan
Fed on ideology
[DAWN] RECENTLY the International Islamic University in Islamabad held a Model UN conference, where students simulate what takes place at the UN General Assembly, by role-playing as ambassadors of different countries and engaging in debates on world issues and global conflicts.

It's a wonderful extracurricular activity that stimulates students intellectually, and encourages them to learn about diplomacy and international relations. MUN conferences take place all over the world and hundreds of students have benefited greatly from participating as delegates in the many conferences.

As a complement to the debates, the MUN organisers at this particular university had students set up a Global Village promoting the countries that were participating in the event. Diplomats from various countries living in Islamabad were invited to visit the stalls.

Unfortunately, things went sour when students from the ultra-conservative Jamaat-i Islami noticed that there was a stall representing Israel amongst the rest of the world's countries, and the whole thing spiralled into a fiasco. A hundred students showed up with batons and threatened violence if the Global Village wasn't shut down.

The consequences the day after the event were even worse. The blame game started up almost immediately, with the university administration claiming the Israeli stall had been set up without their knowledge or permission. The students responded that the MUN faculty advisers had approved of the inclusion of Israel in the debates because they were discussing issues related to Paleostine and the UN resolutions against Israel's occupation of Gazoo and the West Bank. Therefore, Israel had to be a part of the activities, including the Global Village. "We were not promoting Israel, but representing it," said the students, in the most logical response to the entire brouhaha.

Then, the Higher Education Commission decided to get involved, and released an ominously worded instruction to all universities, titled 'Adherence to Ideology and the Principles of Pakistain'. The title alone should be enough to make your heart sink, considering exactly how helpful this constant argument about the "ideology of Pakistain" has been for our progress as a nation.

But wait, there's more. The directive says, "Universities and degree- awarding institutions have a great responsibility of promoting ideology and principles of Pakistain ... demonstration of such rightful perceptions promote nationalism, dispel confusion and infuse beliefs and principles that bring harmony in a society, and bolsters unity and performance."

The statement goes on to lambast universities holding activities that "include discussions or presentations contrary to the ideology and principles of Pakistain" which it deems "tarnish the image of an institution" and "fortify negativism and chaos". And then it instructs all universities to "remain vigilant" against any activity that challenges the ideology and principles of Pakistain and/or the perspective of the government of Pakistain".

Bytes For All, the digital rights organization that encourages development and democracy through Internet and computer technology, strongly protested the statement. It tweeted, "Acts of impunity don't always involve guns. These can also be HEC Pakistain directives sabotaging education's future." Indeed, instructing universities to promote 'ideology' is something you would expect from repressive regimes like North Korea, the Third Reich, or Stalin's Russia -- all company that Pakistain should not find itself honoured to keep.

Anyone with any knowledge of the purpose of education knows that it isn't meant to 'promote the ideology' of any country -- that's called brainwashing. The state has no right to dictate the closely held values and ideals of individuals, nor to teach complete obedience to the government and threaten dire consequences for non-adherence. All we have to do is look around us to see negativity and chaos, disunity and disharmony: the result of many years of trying to teach state-sanctioned ideology but in reality only sowing the seeds of hate and intolerance for many generations.

The students at the Model UN should be congratulated for their courage in going against the popular belief that sticking our heads in the sand will solve any of the world's problems -- in this case, pretending that Israel doesn't exist in order to help Paleostine. These students were intelligent enough to realise that dialogue and discussion are the ways out of conflict; they were brave enough to mirror the world as it really is, not as Pakistain's 'ideology' might wish it to be.

Top quality education encourages critical thinking in students, not adhering to state-sponsored dogma. The best advice I can give to students today is that if anyone pushes 'ideology' on you, reject it. Read history, politics, literature. Ask questions. Form your own conclusions. Don't be intellectually lazy and swallow everything your elders tell you. They made huge mistakes; don't perpetuate them by blindly imitating their prejudices and narrow vision. You want a better Pakistain? This is the real way to obtain it.

#1  before we get to holier than thou on this..

A friend of the family was a education/history professor at U of Nebraska Lincoln in the late 50s early 60s. UNL has always had a large correspondence course system. One of his books and courses was turned into one.

One fine day in Addas Ababa a communist rabble rouser quoted from him in demonstration. In the audience was a CIA Agent. He heard
"In times of war even the most enlightened civilizations naturally tend toward barbarism."

Soon our prof friend was before the House Comm. on Unamerican Activities. It was demanded that he remove the the phrase. He refused. Then he was lectured by the committee
"DO YOU KNOW WHY SCHOOLS TEACH HISTORY?"
He started to explain but was interrupted and told.
"NO. WE ALLOW IT FOR THE PURPOSE OF PROMOTING PATRIOTISM!"

He was held in contempt of Congress for refusing to change his textbook.

The external dimension
[DAWN] PAKISTAN'S 'war on terrorism' is over four months old. What has been achieved? What remains to be done?

The Pakistain Army's Operation Zarb-e-Azb
..the Pak offensive against Qaeda in Pakistain and the Pak Taliban in North Wazoo. The name refers to the sword of the Prophet (PTUI!)...
in North Wazoo has cleared most of the agency of the Tehrik-e-Taliban Pakistain and other terrorist and holy warrior organizations. While the TTP was the main target, other groups co-located there -- Al Qaeda, the Haqqanis, Uzbeks and Uighurs -- have also come under attack and been obliged to vacate North Waziristan. The 'infrastructure of terrorism' which existed there -- training camps, arms caches, communications facilities -- has been destroyed.

Lynched in Pakistan
[DAWN] The lynching of a Christian couple in Kot Radha Kishan near Lahore has shocked Paks and the rest of the world.

The despicable act is shocking indeed, yet hardly surprising in Pakistain where, like several other Moslem countries, mob violence has turned into a spectator sport.

A large mob numbering hundreds bludgeoned a Christian couple to death. The victims, Shama and Shehzad, were parents of three children, while Shama was four-months pregnant. The mob later burnt their bodies in the furnace of the brick kiln where the couple worked as bonded labour.

Bundled Cable Deathwatch: Ratings Plunge, Darwin Looms

If you're wondering how in the world CNN and MSNBC can have almost no viewers but continue to survive, these fees are why (these fees also explain why your cable bill is so expensive). Currently, if you want Fox News but are forced into a package with CNN in order to get Fox News, CNN's parent company, Turner Broadcasting, earns a piece of your cable bill whether you watch CNN or not.

What absolutely terrifies the likes of CNN and MSNBC is that there is no other format where these obscene carriage fees can be duplicated. Only cable and satellite are NETWORK driven. Every emerging technology, such as streaming, is CONTENT driven. People aren't paying for networks, they are paying for individual shows and movies.

#3  Cut the cord ten years ago and haven't looked back. Noticed this morning though (I'm on firewatch duty at work today) that all the CNN channels are gone.

The beginning of the end? Maybe - but at this point, not even a la carte would bring us back. The only things I missed was History Channel, TLC, A&E, and Discovery - and since they're nothing but reality programming now, there's nothing on them I want to watch that I can't find on Hulu or Netflix for a total of $22/month for 100% of what I want to watch...as opposed to my old cable bill of $60/month for not even 1% of the programming.

#4  I haven't had cable in ten years, and since cable companies insist on "bundling" I prolly won't for the rest of what's left of my life. My TV habits are to watch college football and college basketball until the Final Four, and then off goes the TV until the Hall of Fame game. If I could buy cable for the months of August through April, I would, but for "bundling"
Posted by: badanov || 11/09/2014 9:29 Comments || Top||

#5  I would love to have access to Velocity Channel, but I'm not going to sign up for a cable/dish package to get it. Haven't had one for ten years, and that was only for five years or so until Comcast aggravated me sufficiently. I don't watch sports, so there's basically nothing on TV (or Apple TV, or Hulu Plus) that I would want to watch. That includes Fox News, not to say the rest of the MSM. Netflix is pretty good, and Amazon Plus is occasionally useful.

Muslims Tried To Invoke Sharia Law In Alabama, Big Mistake!
Posted by: Shomotch Sperens9821 || 11/09/2014 00:00 || Comments || Link || [0 views] Top|| File under:

#1  This headline is completely misleading, ie, a complete and total lie. No Muslims tried to invoke Sharia law in Alabama. To quote from the article itself:

"The state of Alabama took an amazing proactive step preserving their legal system. In response to other countries being ran over by Sharia law activists, they took measures to ensure Sharia Law would never have a foothold to creep in. "

Since no further information of any kind about the "amazing proactive step" was provided, or how it "preserved their legal system", I'm sort of skeptical.

#2  The invocation of any type of law in Alabama is problematic.
