Europe
Exodus and influx
[DAWN] GERMANY'S far-right parties are planning a show of force this coming weekend in a small town called Goslar.

They are irked by the fact that the town's mayor, Oliver Junk -- a member of Angela Merkel
...current chancellor of Germany. She was educated in East Germany when is was still run by commies, but in 1989 got involved with the growing democracy movement when the Berlin Wall fell. Merkel is sometimes referred to by Germans as Mom...
's Christian Democrats elected in 2011 for an eight-year term by more than 90pc of the vote -- has declared he is keen on accommodating a lot more immigrants.

Goslar is losing up to 2,000 residents a year, and Junk says: "We have plenty of housing, and rather than see it decay we could give new homes to immigrants, helping them, and so give our town a future."

Goslar's predicament isn't unique, or even rare, across Europe. Apart from the continuing exodus from country towns to the city, the continent's birth rate has long been in decline, presaging economic concerns, not least on account of the growing imbalance between taxpayers and pensioners.

Refugees fresh off the boat are obviously not taxpayers, but it's hardly unrealistic to weigh their potential in this respect, once they have settled down and obtained jobs.

Employment is another crucial issue, of course, particularly in countries where austerity is the default position imposed by the European Community. And perhaps it isn't entirely a coincidence that the primary landing ports for refugees are mainly the more economically depressed southern European nations such as Italia, Greece and Spain.

#1  Yea, well, I've no objection to Europe wiping itself out---but they do seem determined to drag the rest of the World with them.

#2  The U.S. has suffered under the non-leadership of an europhile POTUS and his acolytes. Since he is a weak leader and leads from behind, the effect isn't so great. It doesn't seem like many in the world have much confidence in him. Anyway, we are stuck with him for another year or so since Congress seems to be eunuchified to do much.

India-Pakistan
Threat of sectarianism
[DAWN] THERE remains a troubling disconnect between what the government claims and the reality on the ground when it comes to the state's attempts to fight sectarianism. On Monday, Interior Minister Nisar Ali Khan once again claimed that there has been significant progress in several areas of the National Action Plan and appeared to suggest that the clampdown on sectarianism is continuing. To support his case, the interior minister cited actions against the misuse of loudspeakers and a progressive eradication of hate literature. Yet, there is reason to believe that many, if not most, sectarian elements have remained untouched, continuing to operate with impunity and little fear of the law. Consider the case of the banned ASWJ and its leadership. While some of its leaders may be in jail and other affiliated groups' leaders dead, the fact remains that the ASWJ has an open and vociferous presence inside the country. When one of the most notorious of banned
...the word banned seems to have a different meaning in Pakistain than it does in most other places. Or maybe it simply lacks any meaning at all...
organization
s can have active social media accounts and hold rallies across the country, there is something wrong with the claims of the interior minister.

A key part of the problem is that the state appears not to have given much thought to what constitutes sectarianism and the violence it engenders. If that were to be done and meaningful action taken, sectarian groups like the Sipah-e-Sahaba Pakistain
...a Sunni Deobandi organization, a formerly registered Pak political party, established in the early 1980s in Jhang by Maulana Haq Nawaz Jhangvi. Its stated goal is to oppose Shia influence in Pakistain. They're not too big on Brelvis, either. Or Christians. Or anybody else who's not them. The organization was banned in 2002 as a terrorist organization, but somehow it keeps ticking along, piling up the corpse counts...
could not simply morph into the ASWJ or another avatar at some later point. By defining sectarianism clearly and robustly, the focus would be on the leaders spewing hate and the recruits perpetrating the violence -- a change from the present nonsensical approach of simply banning organizations and waiting for them to appear in a new form. Then there is the problem of the mosque-madressah-social welfare nexus along with the proliferation of hate literature that makes sectarianism so hard to root out -- even if present-day sectarian murderous Moslems are captured, the next generation is already being trained and prepared for battle. It is not enough to simply curb the sale and distribution of hate literature outside mosques on Fridays -- there has to be an attempt to find and prosecute the creators of the content. And with the ever-growing use of the internet via smartphones and relatively cheap internet access, there has to be attention paid to online hate literature and the forums in which it is distributed. Anything less and the lull will prove to be only temporary.

#1  Banning the misuse of loudspeakers and a progressive eradication of hate literature.
Yep, that ought to do it.

Israel-Palestine-Jordan
Should Netanyahu suspend Israel's confrontation with Obama?
You can't suspend confrontation with somebody like Obama---it just encourages his kind
It is surely absurd to suggest that out of deference to a delusional American president, Israel's prime minister should tread softly when his country faces an existential threat as the US empowers our most dangerous Islamic terrorist neighbor to become a threshold nuclear state. All the more so when some of its leaders are undeterred by mutual assured destruction and are even now reiterating their determination to wipe the "cancer" Israel off the face of the earth.

The reality is that the US administration is entering into a pact with a terrorist state that is explicitly committed to the destruction of Israel. Moreover, the US will be releasing over $150 billion into its coffers, which the Iranians openly boast will be employed to bolster terrorist activities by its surrogates against Israel. For Netanyahu not to oppose such a policy, irrespective of the outcome, would have been unconscionable and a dereliction of his responsibility as head of the Jewish state.

As further horrific details emerge of the ineptitude and immorality of the US administration in its negotiations with Iran, some of Obama's former Democratic supporters have begun to publicly question his rationality. That the US agreed to cede responsibility to the duplicitous Iranians to selfcheck compliance in lieu of an independent body is mind-boggling. This highlights the delusional nature of the administration and exposes Obama's duplicity when he assured the world that compliance would be rigorously monitored. It exemplifies the farce of this utterly sordid "deal" capitulating to genocidal Islamic terrorists.
I wonder if Obama ordered US forces in the region to defend Iranian airspace?

Same 'questions' surfaced here in 2008 and have continued on a near daily basis since.

#2  I wonder if Obama ordered US forces in the region to defend Iranian airspace?

That kind of 'news' would be on the Congressional floor during the treaty debate by yesterday. No way to keep it buried, too many handlers - See Manning, Snowden.

#3  The reality is that the US administration is entering into a pact with a terrorist state that is explicitly committed to the destruction of Israel.

Should be added, committed to the destruction of the U.S. as well.

Horrific details emerge of the ineptitude and immorality [regarding the "deal" with Iran] and a "delusional American President" should be descriptors that Congress considers when voting in September. The Donks need to side with America rather than Party. I seldom agree with Charles Schumer on anything but in this case IMO he is on the right side of America and Israel as well as history.

#4  a "delusional American President"

Sorry, but this only holds true if you know what his real goal is. If he truly has the health and safety of America and the world at heart and believes that this deal is a big step toward that, then he is delusional.

If, OTOH, he wants to drag America down to the level of a 3rd world sewer, destroy Israel AND build up an Islamic paradise it makes all the sense in the world and rather than being delusional he is just pure evil.

The Danger of America Asking Its Army to Do Too Much
[World Politics Review] Of all the U.S. military services, the Army has the most expansive mission. Because the Air Force and Navy are built around platforms--aircraft, ships, submarines--their functions are determined, in part, by what those things can and can't do. The foundation of the Marine Corps is the infantryman, but that service's small size forces it to focus on a relatively limited mission set. Expeditionary operations are the centerpiece, shaping the Marines' force development, acquisitions, doctrine, training and leadership. Ultimately the Air Force, Navy and Marines can do many things, but their "core competence" is clear. They know what to focus on.

The Army is different. Its ability to do many things, ranging from large-scale humanitarian relief to high tempo combat, has always been one of its selling points. Like all good things, though, this utility can be pushed too far: A case can be made that today America is asking its Army to do too much...

#5  With strong leadership and political will, the right focus will come. The focus of winning wars has been diluted or destroyed by changing the focus to social engineering/diversity.

#6  No more nation building, especially in Muslim cat box countries where the local religion is incompatible with democracy. That's what you call giving pearls to swine and it does no good for you or the swine. If we absolutely must fight these people then kill them, break what little infrastructure they have and let the survivors figure out what to do with the rubble.
