MILWAUKEE (AP) — A Wisconsin dentist is accused of damaging his patients’ teeth so that he could bill insurance companies for crown procedures.
Scott Charmoli, 60, of Grafton, was charged Tuesday in federal court with eight counts of health care fraud and two counts of false statements. If convicted, he faces a maximum sentence of 20 years in prison and a $250,000 fine.
Charmoli is accused of falsely telling patients that they needed crowns and then using his drill to break off parts their teeth during the procedure. Charmoli submitted X-rays and photographs of the chipped teeth to insurance companies to obtain coverage for the crowns, the indictment says.
Authorities say Charmoli performed more than $2 million worth of crown procedures between January 2018 and August 2019.
Charmoli’s attorney, Nila Robinson, did not immediately respond to an email message left Thursday by The Associated Press.
An arraignment and plea hearing are scheduled for Dec. 30.
"The Justice Department focuses on prosecuting health care fraud not only to protect health care funds but also to protect patients who entrust their well being to providers," U.S. Attorney Matthew Krueger said in a statement.

Perhaps as a result, the backlash against city officials is strong, and the family has reclaimed the property — despite it being sold by the bank.

Julie alleged that the company "falsely accused" her of being a U.S. citizen.
The response accuses the company of "trespassing and criminally attempting to convert corporate statutes with color into lawful criminal codes without chartered regulatory and delegated jurisdictional authority."
She accuses the company again of not being "registered and chartered for conducting business" in her state.
The court documents detail a bizarre, years-long process of a family willing to cook up just about any claim as they fought to stay in a home they stopped paying for.
Sovereign citizen nonsense, acting just like Muslims shearing the unbelievers. I do wish someone would mention whether the Kinneys are formal members of the Moorish Sovereign Citizens/Indigenous Moors organization, or if they just adopted the general idea.

WASHINGTON (AP) — The U.S. added a second COVID-19 vaccine to its arsenal Friday, boosting efforts to beat back an outbreak so dire that the nation is regularly recording more than 3,000 deaths a day.
Much-needed doses are set to arrive Monday after the Food and Drug Administration authorized an emergency rollout of the vaccine developed by Moderna Inc. and the National Institutes of Health.
The move marks the world’s first authorization for Moderna’s shots. The vaccine is very similar to one from Pfizer Inc. and Germany’s BioNTech that’s now being dispensed to millions of health care workers and nursing home residents as the biggest vaccination drive in U.S. history starts to ramp up.

Why did it take 11 months and 300,000 lives for testing and approval?
Usually it takes 15-20 years — and most promising treatments are not good enough to survive the process. The deaths in the meantime were due to ignorance about the danger of leaving ventilator patients on their backs instead of turning them face down on their bellies, and the bien pensants shouting down treatments like hydroxychloroquine/azithromycin/zinc.
Big Pharma probably wanted assurances about liability protection.
They got them. The manufacturers cannot be sued for liability.

The vaccine is in the beginning of the distribution (mustard of graph). The 5 months shown to "create the vaccine" (dark blue) should only have been a month (beginning of March) to realize a vaccine is needed and that Moderna already created one in January. It seems to me that 4 months were lost futzing around.

Modern a I would trust more than that Pfizer one. Pfizer has made exactly ONE mRNA based vaccine, just the Covid one. Moderna has 10 mRNA already approved before they started on Covid-19. So they have a lot more experience developing and testing this kind of vaccine. Things like encapsulates, lipids, protein folding, and even the packaging, Moderna has tons more knowledge and experience. That’s why their vaccine can be stored at in a common freezer while Pfizer needs -94 special freezers to prevent denature of the proteins and lipids.
My doctor says he wants us to wait for Johnson and Johnson’s single dose vaccine, if we are not high risk, but if we are high risk then go with the Moderna. He reckons it will be equally effective, but safer.

The largest group of fatalities was among those aged 80-89 with 1,022 deaths — over a third of the total. Among 70- to79-year-olds there were 759 deaths; among those aged 90 or over there were 613.
The report also noted the geographical spread of deaths shows that most occurred in Jerusalem, the country’s most populous city and the one that has had the highest number of virus cases. The capital suffered 358 deaths, almost twice Tel Aviv’s 180. Bnei Brak was next with 146 deaths, followed by Bat Yam (123), Haifa (113), and Ashdod (103).
The most deadly month was October when 957 people died, followed by September with 649, August with 389 and November with 311.
In the first half of December, over 310 people have died.
Israel is set to launch a mass inoculation program next week, aiming to vaccinate 60,000 people a day over the next few weeks with the Pfizer vaccine. As part of the drive, the Health Ministry division tasked with administering virus efforts for the elderly is preparing to vaccinate the 160,000 residents and staff at the country’s care homes, the report said.
The some 250,000 Israelis over 80 will be among the first given the vaccines, according to the report.

Soad Thabet, 74, was paraded naked by a mob of violent mostly peaceful vigilantes after rumors surfaced that her son was having an affair with a Moslem woman.
The sectarian incident in al-Karm village in Minya governorate, about 300 kilometers south of the capital Cairo, saw also homes of Christian families torched and villagers angrily calling for the expulsion of Copts.
Egypt’s Christians, the largest religious minority in the Middle East, make up 10-15 percent of the 100 million population.
The three defendants — a father and his two sons — were acquitted after a re-trial where they were initially sentenced to 10 years in prison.
Thursday’s verdict can be appealed, the judicial source added.
Local Coptic newspaper Watani reported Thabet was distraught upon hearing the verdict.
"After all these years, how can they be let off after they stripped me naked in front of everyone to see? What can I say? God will bring back my rights," she said according to the publication.
Leading rights group Egyptian Initiative for Personal Rights (EIPR) condemned the verdict in a statement urging the public prosecution to lodge an appeal.
"Perpetrators of sectarian attacks must be held accountable for their actions in order to avoid their repetition," the watchdog said.
President Abdel Fattah al-Sissi lambasted the sectarian violence, which turned into a national controversy, at the time describing it as "unacceptable."

SMIC has received billions of dollars in support from Beijing and is at the heart of its efforts to improve the country's technological self-sufficiency.
In a call with news hounds, a senior Commerce Department official said Washington has evidence that SMIC has worked with the Chinese military on developing short- and medium-range ballistic missiles and exoskeletons for soldiers, but had been in talks with SMIC for months on a way to avoid the designation.
"We're adding SMIC to the entity list mostly because we need to make sure US intellectual property and manufacturing capabilities are not being used by SMIC's clients to continue to support the military-civil fusions efforts within China," the official said.
"We simply no longer could stand by and watch our adversary using our technologies to support its military capabilities."
The designation means US companies must apply for a license before exporting to SMIC, and specifically targets the Chinese firm's ability to acquire materials for producing chips of 10 nanometers or smaller, the best class in the industry.
Also targeted was drone manufacturer DJI "because of its complicity in human rights violations within China," the official said.
That company holds some 70 percent of the global drone market, and the US Department of the Interior last year grounded its fleet of the company's drones amid rising security concerns over Chinese electronics.
