Man who killed 8-year-old girl found strangled in prison
[WKRN] The Office of the State Medical Examiner says an Oklahoma man convicted of murder in the 1997 disappearance of his 8-year-old neighbor was strangled to death in his prison cell.

A report released Tuesday says 59-year-old Anthony Palma died from "ligature strangulation and blunt force trauma to the head" on Jan. 11 in his cell at the Oklahoma State Penitentiary in McAlester.

Palma was sentenced to life in prison for the presumed death of Kirsten Hatfield. The girl was kidnapped from her home in the Oklahoma City suburb of Midwest City and her body was never found.

The case remained cold until 2015 when DNA from blood on the girl’s bedroom window and her underwear that was recovered from the yard was linked to Palma. He was convicted in 2017.

#2  The Oklahoma Forensics Department has had a less than stellar track record of late, per (Michelle Malkin's 2017 article):
"Costly errors and gross misconduct will continue as long as politicized prosecutors operate with a “win at all costs” agenda and stubbornly refuse to admit their failures. Dark history seems to repeating itself at the Oklahoma City Police Department, home of the late forensic faker Joyce Gilchrist. Known as “Black Magic,” Gilchrist conjured mountains of phony DNA evidence out of whole cloth in collaboration with an out-of-control district attorney over two ruinous decades."

-Short Attention Span Theater-
Detective facing the sack for farting on duty and repeatedly saying ‘c**t'
[Metro UK] HT AOS. She seems nice
A detective who would break wind and use strong language around the police station could lose her job. DC Claire Fitzpatrick, 44, is accused of repeatedly using the word c**t and breaking wind in front of other officers.
In a bid to prevent herself being fired she said that the behaviour was part of a ‘culture of banter' at her village police station in Bedwas, south Wales.

She is accused of:
Farting outside her sergeant's office
Telling a suspect "you're driving like a c**t";
Asking a junior colleague if he wanted an affair with a "fatter, ugly, older woman";
Asking another colleague in a busy station for thrush cream

She said that swearing was ‘just the nature of the place' and that ‘c**t' had replaced ‘f**k' as her word of choice. DC Fitzpatrick admitted breaking wind outside the sergeant's office but insisted that it wasn't deliberate. She said: ‘I would joke about it. Sometimes I would speak like the character Borat, or use a silly voice to say: "Rather out than in".' DC Fitzpatrick, who has served on the force for 22 years, faces 25 counts of inappropriate behaviour.

Statue of Liberty climber gets her freedom curbed
[NYPOST] A Manhattan judge Friday ordered home detention for the Statue of Liberty-scaling activist until her sentencing in two weeks, saying she may have "a climbing problem."

The mandate was issued during a bail-revocation hearing for Therese "Patricia" Okoumou ‐ who on July Fourth climbed the landmark statue, forcing throngs of tourists to evacuate ‐ after she pulled a similar stunt in Texas last week.

Magistrate Federal Judge Gabriel Gorenstein ordered Okoumou to be fitted with an electronic-monitoring bracelet and to remain at home unless she gets permission to leave for religious, medical or legal purposes or to look for work.

Before the decision came down, Okoumou’s lawyer, Ron Kuby, argued that she doesn’t pose a danger to the community.

"Ms. Okoumou does not have a drug problem. She does have a serious problem with injustice," Kuby said.

Gorenstein shot back, "From my legal perspective, she may have a climbing problem."

Gorenstein said he is worried about the fact that Okoumou uses crowdfunding for her legal bills and income.

"What concerns me is that she needs publicity to get those donations, and her method to get publicity is to break the law," Gorenstein said adding he hoped home detention and GPS tracking would keep her in line.

Meghan Markle and Prince Harry will raise their baby as ‘gender fluid’ and will avoid any stereotypes
[THESUN.CO.UK] MEGHAN Markle and Prince Harry
will reportedly raise their baby 'gender fluid' and 'won't impose stereotypes' on it.

A source close to the couple told Vanity Fair that Meghan Markle, 37, was telling guests at her recent New York baby shower that she would raise their baby in a "fluid" way.

"She was talking openly about it," said the source to the magazine.

"Meghan has been talking to some of her friends about the birth and how she and Harry plan to raise their baby. Her exact word was 'fluid'.

"She said they plan to raise their child with a fluid approach to gender and they won’t be imposing any stereotypes."
Translation: the little princess will get early training on target shooting and helicopter flying, in addition to mandatory proper curtseying technique in adorable smocked dresses, while her brothers will learn to bow in between fighting wars with the dolls in the nursery. First time parents are adorable, assuming she meant a word of what we’re told she said.
Meghan, now seven months pregnant, flew from London to the US last week for five nights of shopping and pampering.

THEY GOT HIM: UC-Berkeley police arrest man who attacked conservative activist
This is going to look good on your resume, Chip. This is going to look good on your resume, Chip.
[CampusReform] The school identified the suspect as Zachary Greenberg. This is the first time that UC-Berkeley has publicly named the suspect who on Feb. 19 was caught on video punching Hayden Williams, a conservative and employee of Campus Reform's parent organization, in the face. At the time, Williams was helping conservative groups recruit new members.

"Today, an Alameda County Superior Court Judge issued a warrant for the arrest of the suspect in the matter involving a February 19 assault on Sproul Plaza. Zachary Greenberg was arrested by the University of California Police Department (UCPD) on the warrant and booked into jail at 1 p.m. UCPD will formally present the case to the Alameda County District Attorney’s Office for consideration of the filing of criminal charges. Once the matter is presented and reviewed by the District Attorney’s Office, additional information will be made available regarding a charging decision," UC-Berkeley said in a statement Friday.

According to information obtained from Alameda County public records, Greenberg is 28 years old. He was booked into the Glenn Dyer Detention Facility in Oakland, California.. His bail was set at $30,000.

Jail records show that Greenberg was charged under California Penal Code 245(A)(4) F, which is classified under assault and battery. According to one section of the code, "any person who commits an assault upon the person of another by any means of force likely to produce great bodily injury shall be punished by imprisonment in the state prison for two, three, or four years, or in a county jail for not exceeding one year, or by a fine not exceeding ten thousand dollars ($10,000), or by both the fine and imprisonment."

#3  Update:

"UC-Berkeley spokeswoman Diana Harvey said Friday after announcing the arrest of 28-year-old Zachary Greenberg on a felony assault charge that Greenberg was employed by UC-Berkeley from May 21-July 9, 2010 as a lab assistant in the Department of Psychology. Greenberg would have been college-aged at the time UC-Berkeley confirmed he worked for the college, so Campus Reform asked whether Greenberg was a student worker. Harvey did not specify in which capacity Greenberg worked for UC-Berkeley.

Harvey also said that Greenberg was once "briefly" a non-degree seeking student at UC-Berkeley."

China-Japan-Koreas
N. Korea's Kim Kicks Off Official Vietnam Visit
[AnNahar] North Korean leader Kim Pudge Jong-un
...the overweight, pouty-looking hereditary potentate of North Korea. Pudge appears to believe in his own divinity, but has yet to produce any loaves and fishes, so his subjects remain malnourished...
kicked off an official visit to Vietnam Friday, three days after arriving in the country for a nuclear summit with US President Donald Trump
...New York real estate developer, described by Dems as illiterate, racist, misogynistic, and what ever other unpleasant descriptions they can think of, elected by the rest of us as 45th President of the United States...
that ended deadlocked.

Kim put aside the troubled negotiations for the pageantry of a formal diplomatic occasion in Hanoi, where -- accompanied by his sister and close aide Kim Yo Jong -- he was received by Vietnam President and Communist Party chief Nguyen Phu Trong.

The smiling leader walked before rows of children waving Vietnamese and North Korean flags outside the mustard-yellow colonial-era Presidential Palace, before inspecting an honor guard.

Long-isolated North Korea is increasingly seeking to portray itself as a country like any other. Vietnam is Kim's fourth foreign destination in less than 12 months, after not leaving his borders for more than six years following his inheritance of power.
The long-isolated North is increasingly seeking to portray itself as a country like any other, and Vietnam is Kim's fourth foreign destination in less than 12 months, after not leaving his borders for more than six years following his inheritance of power.

He has traveled to China four times for meetings with President Xi Jinping, walked across the border with South Korea for a summit with President Moon Jae-in, and went to Singapore for his first summit with Trump.

But for protocol purposes Kim's trips do not rank as state visits, as he is not North Korea's head of state -- his grandfather Kim Il Sung retains the title of Eternal President even though he died in 1994.

Instead Kim is officially chairman of the ruling Workers' Party of Korea and chairman of the State Affairs Commission, although he is most commonly referred to as the "Supreme Leader".

The North's state KCNA news agency described it as an "official goodwill visit" to Vietnam.

Curious onlookers lined the streets Friday to catch a glimpse of Kim -- the first North Korean leader to visit Vietnam since his grandfather in 1964.

But not all were impressed.

"The summit failed. I don't know how much Vietnam has spent on this, but it must be a lot," Hanoi resident Tu Mai, 40, told AFP.

- TRAIN JOURNEY -
The North Korean leader later met the head of the southeast Asian country's rubber stamp parliament, Nguyen Thi Kim Ngan, telling her that the warm relationship between their nations was established by Kim Il Sung and Vietnam's revolutionary leader Ho Chi Minh.

"I was deeply moved by the fervent welcome from the Vietnamese people and felt our 70-year history of friendly ties," Kim said.

During the Cold War, Vietnam and North Korea were both members of the Communist bloc, with Pyongyang sending Hanoi pilots and psychological warfare specialists to help it in the Vietnam War.

Hanoi has since embraced market economics and been rewarded with rapid growth, while it now counts the U.S. as an ally.

Kim is expected to lay wreaths at the Ho Chi Minh mausoleum and war deaders monument on Saturday ahead of his planned departure by train for the marathon return journey home.

Kim undertook a 4,000-kilometer (2,500-mile) two-and-a-half day rail journey through China to Vietnam to attend the summit.

The streets of Hanoi have been lined with heavy security along with military equipment and armored vehicles for the summit, and some said it was exhausting work.

"It's tiring, we've been on high alert for two weeks now," a police officer told AFP.

"I really wish it would end soon as it really disrupts people's lives."

#4  Didn't he get caught trying to steal a poster while he was there? Sorry about what happened to him but maybe he should get a Darwin Award.

Warmbier was taken hostage because he went to North Korea and because KJU wanted him to be taken hostage.

Th Norks held absolute power over him. Thus they could easily coerce him to make any statement and/or to participate in the production of "evidence" of any "crime."

Case closed.

Warmbier's travel to North Korea was unwise, but North Korea was dramatically escalating its aggressive behavior.

He couldn't reasonably have foreseen that he would be arrested and then be mortally injured by exposure to a neurotoxic substance while in custody.

The North Korean did kill Kim Jong Nam on foreign soil using a neurotoxic WMD in 2017. But that was over a year after Warmbier traveled to North Korea.

How it was a very delicate balance. We all know NK was responsible for heinous acts against Otto, however, I think most realize how in the midst of negotiating you don't want to slam KJU, and any success that we may have for the future.

United Nations Showcases Giant Portrait of Communist Tyrant Che Guevara
[Breitbart] The United Nations office in Geneva, home to its Human Rights Council, is currently showcasing a large photograph of the Argentinian revolutionary Che Guevara, despite his record of violence, repression, and egregious human rights abuses.

Hillel Neuer, the executive director of U.N. Watch, a watchdog that aims to expose profligacy and human rights failures throughout the organization, tweeted the picture of the photograph on show at the building in Switzerland.

"Giant portrait of the mass murderer Che Guevara now on display at the United Nations in Geneva, home of its ironically-named Human Rights Council," he wrote.

Israel's Beresheet lunar shuttle completes another maneuver on way to moon
[Jpost] Israel’s Beresheet ("Genesis in English), the Jewish state’s first lunar spacecraft, successfully completed another maneuver on Wednesday at around 9:30 p.m. Israel time, according to a release by Space IL.

"The maneuver was executed as expected," Ido Anteby, CEO of SpaceIL, said. "Beresheet’s main engine was activated for four minutes."

Earlier in the week, Beresheet experienced some technical difficulties and had to cancel a maneuver planned for the spacecraft. Since then, SpaceIL and Israel Aerospace Industries (IAI), the organizations that spearheaded the projects, completed examination of the computer resets and implemented corrective measures.

"All the spacecraft systems are working well, confirmed Opher Doron, general manager of the Space Division at IAI. "There is no big problem on any of the systems. We conducted a lot of testing on the overall spacecraft."

He said it is "quite normal" for a new spacecraft to have some "teething problems" in its first days.

"We have overcome them all and the moon seems to be getting within reach," Doron said. "There will probably be some more surprises around the way and hopefully we will manage to deal with them, as well."

Dozens of Rohingya found in Malaysia after perilous sea journey
[AlAhram] Thirty-four Rohingya were found on a beach in Malaysia Friday, police said, the first of the Moslem minority group thought to have arrived in the country by sea for almost a year.

About 740,000 Rohingya fled Myanmar for Bangladesh after a military clampdown in August 2017, joining huge numbers already confined to camps.

Local police officer Nahar Jalaluddin told AFP the Rohingya were discovered on an isolated stretch of coast in the northern state of Perlis.

"They were tired, weak and hungry," he said. "The refugees, who included men, women and kiddies, are now in the custody of the immigration authorities."

The official said he suspected they had been ferried into Malaysian waters from neighbouring Thailand by people smugglers under cover of darkness, and dumped close to the shore.

The New Straits Times newspaper reported that villagers found the Rohingya on the shore covered with mud, and many were crying.

It is the first time since April 2018 that Malaysian authorities have found a group of Rohingya who made it to the country by sea.

It was not clear whether they had started their journey in Myanmar or Bangladesh, where huge numbers of Rohingya are living in squalid refugee camps.

Bangladesh security forces have stopped repeated attempts by smugglers to transport Rohingya to Malaysia by boat. Authorities fear many are seeking to make the crossing before the start of the monsoon season at the end of March.

Relatively affluent, Moslem-majority Malaysia has long been a favourite destination for Rohingya, where they are a source of labour in low-paying industries such as agriculture and construction.

Friday Night Dump: WaPo issues "editor's correction" on Covington Boys Story
"Too late". A $250M defamation lawsuit wonderfully focuses one's mind, don't it?
[NY Post] The Washington Post on Friday issued a lengthy editor's note concerning their story about the Covington Catholic controversy, acknowledging that "a more complete assessment of what occurred" emerged after its initial story.

The editor's note concerned a Jan. 19 report about the incident involving a confrontation between Kentucky high school student Nicholas Sandmann and a Native American activist near the Lincoln Memorial the previous day.

"Subsequent reporting, a student's statement and additional video allow for a more complete assessment of what occurred," the editor's note read.

The note comes 10 days after Sandmann filed a $250 million defamation lawsuit against the The Washington Post claiming its story led to a "mob of bullies which attacked, vilified & threatened" an innocent minor.

#1  The non-apology 'correction'. I'm pretty sure a Kentucky jury can define that in dollars.

#2  ...Yeah, the Covington lawyer already said, "too little, too late."

And FWIW, IMHO the Post going this far is an indication that they are concerned, and seriously so at that.

#3  What if Bezos just says,'Screw it, you can keep the paper if you want it, kid'.
Posted by: Cesare || 03/02/2019 10:42 Comments || Top||

#4  Since all they had to do to avoid this unpleasantness was to make a few phone calls, and they didn't, there is a strong case for reckless disregard for the truth. Then, when you consider the internet lynching that included death threats, that disregard was likely to result in harm to the victim. WAPO is on shaky legal ground here.

And I don't care if $250 million is what Bezos paid for that rag. He's the richest man in the world and should have to pay a helluva lot more...a billion at the very least...more like $10 billion to make sure he never does it again.
Posted by: Abu Uluque || 03/02/2019 12:37 Comments || Top||

#5  But, to me, the primary indicator of reckless disregard is that this story was not even newsworthy in the first place. Any legitimate news organization, any reporter with any sense, would have told that crazy old Indian to take a hike when he came to them with this non-story. But WAPO didn't because they wanted to make it look like all Trump supporters are racists...no matter what it does to a 16-year-old. That's why $250 million is not enough. Good thing for Bezos that I won't be on the jury.
