Suspect In LA Homeless Beatings Deported Six Times
LOS ANGELES (CBSLA) ‐ Police say Ramon Escobar, 47, the man arrested in connection with recent attacks on homeless people in Los Angeles and Santa Monica, has now been linked to a total of seven assaults in two cities.

Three of the victims ‐ two in Los Angeles and one in Santa Monica ‐ have died. Police say they recovered a wooden baseball bat and a pair of bolt cutters from Escobar’s car that are believed to have been used in the attacks.

The suspect was arrested Monday in Santa Monica following the early morning assault of a man in the 1500 block of Seventh Street. That man remains in a coma.

U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement officials said Tuesday night that Escobar had been deported six times between 1997 and 2011. ICE said in a statement that the Salvadoran national was freed from federal custody in January 2017 after an immigration court decision.

Escobar was ordered removed from the U.S. by a federal immigration judge in February 1988.

Two Arrested After Gun Fired In Baltimore Elementary School
[BALTIMORE.CBSLOCAL] A Baltimore City Public Schools official says two people have been tossed in the slammer
Drop the rosco, Muggsy, or you're one with the ages!
after a gun was fired in a Baltimore elementary school Wednesday morning.

Two students reportedly brought guns to Maree Garnett Farring Elementary School, and discharged one of them in a bathroom.

No injuries were reported, and "the guns were not used to threaten anyone," according to the school district.

School staff heard the gunshot and went into the bathroom, where they found a shell casing.

The school was then placed on lockdown as a precaution.

Two arrests have been made and the guns were recovered by police.

The district released a statement about the guns found at the school:

"At City Schools, safety is our top priority, and we work daily to provide a positive environment for teaching and learning. Staff and students experiencing anxiety as a result of today’s incident will receive support from the school-based team and mental health professionals for as long as necessary."

Krakatoa volcano stirs to life again
[WUWT] The volcanic island of Krakatau (previously called Krakatoa) is situated in the Sunda Strait between the islands of Java and Sumatra in the Indonesian province of Lampung. The name is also used for the surrounding island group comprising the remnants of a much larger island of three volcanic peaks which was obliterated in a cataclysmic 1883 eruption.

In 1927, a new island, Anak Krakatau, or “Child of Krakatoa”, emerged from the caldera formed in 1883 and is the current location of eruptive activity.

In the NASA photos below, you can see some stunning images of the volcano as it’s been stirring to life again

The Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) on NASA’s Aqua satellite acquired the wide view (top) on September 24. The MultiSpectral Instrument (MSI) on the European Space Agency’s Sentinel-2 acquired the detailed image (second) on September 22. Both images show volcanic ash and steam streaming southwest over the waters of the Sunda Strait.

Local sources reported that this eruption has been ongoing since June 19, 2018. Ash plumes have been observed rising to altitudes up to 1.8 kilometers (6,000 feet). As of September 24, the eruption had not yet affected air travel in southeast Asia, according to news reports. The local alert status remained at “caution,” which is the second-highest level.

Activity at the Indonesian volcano Anak Krakatau is not unusual; eruptions have occurred sporadically over the past few decades. And before that, it was the site of the infamous, deadly eruption of 1883. It is somewhat unusual, however, for satellites to get cloud-free views, as they did in September 2018.

#3  The volcano and the bicycle. From Krakatoa Volcano: Facts About 1883 Eruption
By Mary Bagley

While justifiably rated as one of the most destructive volcanic eruptions of modern times, Krakatoa was not the largest eruption in the recent history of Indonesia. That "honor" belongs to the eruption of Mount Tambora on April 10, 1815. Krakatoa ranks third on the list based on explosive force and destruction.
Tambora is the only eruption in modern history to rate a VEI of 7. Global temperatures were an average of five degrees cooler because of this eruption; even in the United States, 1816 was known as the "year without a summer." Crops failed worldwide, and in Europe and the United States an unexpected outcome was the invention of the bicycle as horses became too expensive to feed.

Hum.

Then this documentary gem, Krakatoa - The Great Volcanic Eruption

#4  Simon Winchester's Krakatoa is a wry and witty account of the 1883 eruption and its effects not only on the local region but also the effects world wide. Some effects were on weather, others were on culture. One reason Krakatoa is so explosive has to do with it's unique setting in terms of the geology of the region and its location at basically the hinge point of two spreading techtonic plates while the Australian plate subducts below them.

Arabia
Workers in Qatar World Cup final city went unpaid for months: Amnesty
[DAWN] Dozens of migrants colonists working on Qatar
...an emirate on the east coast of the Arabian Peninsula. It sits on some really productive gas and oil deposits, which produces the highest per capita income in the world. They piss it all away on religion, financing the Moslem Brotherhood and several al-Qaeda affiliates. Home of nutbag holy manYusuf al-Qaradawi...
's $45 billion World Cup final city of Lusail have gone unpaid for months, Amnesia Amnesty International said on Wednesday, the latest rights accusation against the 2022 tournament host.

Mercury MENA "failed to pay its workers thousands of dollars in wages and work benefits, leaving them stranded and penniless" in the country, according to the London-based rights group.

However in response, football's governing body FIFA accused Amnesty of being "misleading" and said the non-payments were not connected to the 2022 tournament.

Amnesty alleges that at least 78 employees from Nepal, India and the Philippines had not been paid since February 2016 and were owed an average of $2,000 (1,700 euros) ‐ for some the equivalent of several months' wages.

In some cases this had "ruined lives", said Amnesty, which urged the Doha government to pay the workers, some of whom took out huge loans to secure a job in the super-wealthy Gulf state.

One worker, Ernesto, a piping foreman from the Philippines, told Amnesty he was in greater debt after working in Qatar for two years than before he arrived in the country.

Other labourers from Nepal said they had to take their children out of school or sell land to cover debts incurred by working in Qatar.

"By ensuring they get the wages which they are owed, Qatar can help these migrant workers to rebuild their lives," said Steve Cockburn, Amnesty's director of global issues.

It claimed Mercury MENA "took advantage" of Qatar's "kafala" system, which prevents workers from changing jobs or leaving the country without the permission of bosses.

Britain
’True identity’ of Salisbury suspect revealed, UK defense minister says
[ARABNEWS] British defense minister Gavin Williamson said the "true identity" of one of the suspects in a nerve agent attack on a former Russian spy in Salisbury had been revealed, apparently confirming media reports that the suspect was a Russian colonel.

Earlier this month, British prosecutors charged two Russians ‐ Alexander Petrov and Ruslan Boshirov ‐ with attempted murder for the Novichok poisoning of the Skripals in the southern English city in March but said they believed the suspects had been using aliases to enter Britannia. Russia denies involvement.

Boshirov’s real name is Anatoliy Vladimirovich Chepiga, according to two European security sources familiar with the Skripal investigation, who confirmed media reports that cited investigative reporting by website Bellingcat.

"The true identity of one of the Salisbury suspects has been revealed to be a Russian Colonel. I want to thank all the people who are working so tirelessly on this case," Williamson said in a tweet.

Mexican marines take over Acapulco from cartel-infiltrated police
[The National] Mexico’s new government has sent heavily armed marines into the famous beach resort of Acapulco to disarm and take over a local police force they believe may be widely infiltrated by violent cartels.

Acapulco in southern Guerrero state, once a glamorous beach resort for Hollywood's rich and famous, has fallen on hard times as entrenched drug crime has transformed it into one of the most murderous cities in the world.

The local police’s near non-existent response to the rising violence led to the military’s intervention and the arrest of three top officers on Tuesday.

Two police commanders were placed in durance vile
Youse'll never take me alive coppers!... [BANG!]... Ow!... I quit!
on murder charges, and the highway police chief for carrying unlicensed weapons, he said.

Fearing the Acapulco police force had been infiltrated by the narco mobs, the marines, together with state and federal police, deployed in a massive ground and air operation around the Pacific coast city's police headquarters, said Guerrero state security front man Roberto Alvarez.

Europe
Protectionism is OK when we do it: Germany's Altmaier defends plan to protect some industries from foreign takeovers
Hypocritical assholes. Protectionism is bad - as long as it's America doing it. We need to leave our markets wide open to be raped by anyone who comes along. But when it comes to European industries - oh dear no, they need protection! It's vitally important!
BERLIN (Reuters) - German Economy Minister Peter Altmaier on Tuesday defended government efforts to shield some firms from foreign takeovers, arguing that the state had a responsibility to protect key technology and certain industrial sectors.

Speaking to business leaders at an industrial conference in Berlin, Altmaier said: "Germany will remain the most open and most liberal country when it comes to mergers", but the government was considering stricter takeover rules.
This is what is known as "lying".
Berlin must be able to have a closer look at who wanted to buy parts of Germany’s critical infrastructure, and senior officials are working on changes to foreign trade regulations to ensure that key technologies remain in German hands, he said.
And then his lips fell off.
A government source said last month that Berlin wants the power to investigate if an investor outside the European Union buys at least 15 percent of certain German defense-related or security-linked technology firms.
"Fuck off, Americans."
In addition, the government is considering creating a billion-euro fund that could help such firms in financial trouble, another government source told Reuters last week.
I thought those firms were supposed to be allowed to die, because to intervene would disturb the health of the market? Oh wait that's only for us. Their own industries are far too important.

Council of Islamic Ideology backs legislation on triple talaq as punishable offence
[DAWN] Dr Qibla Ayaz, the chairperson of the Council of Islamic Ideology (CII), on Wednesday announced the council's decision to support the declaration of 'triple talaq' as a punishable offence, and that the council would undergo consultations with various scholars soon to decide the appropriate punishment in such cases.

Addressing a presser soon after a detailed meeting held by the council the same day, the chairperson revealed that a conference will be held soon in which scholars will provide their input on the matter.

The council also decided that to remedy the prevalent divorce rate and other such issues, a consolidated form for divorce will be prepared which will include punitive measures for cases in which divorce is declared three times in one sitting.

A draft for the consolidated form will be submitted for the federal government's review, the CII chairperson informed mediapersons, adding that work had already begun on the form and that it will be ready soon.

Dr Ayaz said that 'on-the-spot' divorce had become a widespread social issue, incidences of which are reported on a daily basis to various mosques, after which the matter is taken to court.

Members of the council during the meeting observed that in such situations, women and kiddies are adversely affected, especially with regard to their emotional health and future education.

'Breakthrough' in Eden Housing scam as ex-CJP Iftikhar Chaudhry's son-in-law arrested from Dubai

from Dubai in a case regarding the multi-billion Eden Housing Society scam, in what Information Minister Fawad Chaudhry described as a "breakthrough" on Wednesday.

The minister termed the arrest of Murtaza Amjad by the Federal Investigation Agency in UAE as a "major success" in the government's campaign for accountability. The warrants for his arrest were issued by the National Accountability Bureau (NAB).

He claimed that former CJP Chaudhry had made the "shocking" decision by hearing a case regarding the housing scheme himself, and later gave "relief" to its owners because they were the in-laws of his daughter.

The minister said others accused of allegedly cheating people who had invested their money in the Eden Housing Society included Iftikhar Chaudhry's son, Arsalan Iftikhar, his daughter and the father-in-law of his daughter.
