Mother Teresa charity accused of selling babies in India
h/t Gates of Vienna
[DW] Police said Thursday they had taken two people into custody for allegedly selling infants from a shelter for unwed mothers in eastern India.

The facility in Jharkhand state is operated by Missionaries of Charity, a religious order founded by Mother Teresa in 1950.

"They have said that at least five to six babies have been sold to childless couples," police officer Aman Kumar told the Thomson Reuters Foundation.

"We are investigating to see how the operation was run and how many more children have been given away in the last few years."

Law Firm Faces Charges for Defending Women's Homeless Shelter
[Todd Starnes] An Alaska law firm has been accused of violating a city’s non-discrimination ordinance after they provided legal representation to a Christian women’s shelter accused of violating the same ordinance.

The Anchorage Equal Rights Commission filed a formal complaint against Brena, Bell & Clarkson, charging the law firm with committing “unlawful discriminatory acts or practices” in violation of a city ordinance regarding sex and gender identity.

Their alleged crime is punishable fines and possible jail time.

In February the shelter turned away a biological male who identifies as a female. Shelter leadership said the individual was intoxicated.

However, as a religious organization, they do not house biological men in its abused women’s shelter because doing so would traumatize abused and battered women.

The transgender person filed a complaint against the shelter citing the policy over sexual orientation and gender identity.

Africa Subsaharan
Suspected rhino poachers eaten by lions at South African reserve
[Guardian] At least two rhino poachers were eaten by lions on a South African game farm, according to the reserve’s owner.

A ranger taking guests on a safari drive at the Sibuya game reserve in the Eastern Cape on Tuesday afternoon discovered human remains near a pride of lions.

"We suspect two were killed, possibly three," Sibuya’s owner, Nick Fox, said.

An axe and three pairs of shoes and gloves were found later when police and an anti-poaching unit arrived. The lions had been heard making a commotion in the early hours of Monday.

"We thought they must have been rhino poachers but the axe confirmed it," Fox said. "They use the rifle to shoot the animal and the axe to remove the horn."

South Africa is home to more than 80% of the world’s rhinos, whose population has been depleted by poaching for buyers in Vietnam and China, where rhino horn is coveted as an ingredient in traditional medicine.

More than 1,000 rhinos were killed in South Africa last year.

Britain
We love Donald Trump: U.S. president's UK fans look forward to visit, denounce protests
LONDON (Reuters) - Tens of thousands of protesters are expected to turn out against Donald Trump when he visits Britain next week but some believe the protests are an embarrassment and that the U.S. president deserves a warm welcome.

Trump will arrive in Britain on July 12 for a "working visit", a more sober affair than the original plan for a state visit with its customary pomp and pageantry after it drew threats of mass protests. But anti-Trump demonstrators are still planning to show up, to the dismay - and glee - of his UK supporters.

"He’s coming into the lion’s den and it is going to be really fun to watch," said Londoner Jack Smith, 28, at a party to celebrate U.S. independence from Britain on July 4.

"I’m looking forward to the protest quite frankly, who isn’t? It’s going to be really fun seeing all of these liberals whose world view was shattered back when he was elected in November 2016."

London Mayor Sadiq Khan, who has had a number of social media spats with the president, on Thursday gave permission for a blimp portraying Donald Trump as an orange, snarling baby to be flown over parliament.

Novichok 'could have passed through skin'
[BBC] The nerve agent that poisoned a couple near Salisbury was unlikely to have been left in the open before they touched it, a government scientist has told BBC News.

The Novichok was so toxic it was able to pass through the skin and did not need to be ingested, he added.

Police have said the couple from Amesbury were exposed to the substance after handling a contaminated item.

Charlie Rowley, 45, and Dawn Sturgess, 44, remain critically ill.

Amesbury poisoning: What we know so far

Speaking to BBC security correspondent Frank Gardner, the source said Novichok could be degraded by rainwater and sunlight over time - meaning it was probably discovered by the couple in a contained space.

The source added that Mr Rowley and Ms Sturgess's symptoms were the same as those shown by Russian ex-spy Sergei Skripal and his daughter Yulia.

They were both poisoned with Novichok in nearby Salisbury in March.

#1  The SUN: What is the latest on their condition?

Doctors determined the pair had been poisoned by toxins and are showing very similar symptoms to the former Russian military intelligence colonel and his daughter Julia.

A pal said the pair were feeling ill and preparing to go to hospital after touching an item in Queen Elizabeth Gardens in Salisbury when they "went into a zombie-like state" and "slumped against the wall".

Defence sources say the couple - who have no connections with Russia or security services - were poisoned and samples have been sent to the Porton Down research facility for urgent testing.

Pub renamed Trump Arms for presidential visit
[Evening Standard] A London pub is being renamed The Trump Arms to celebrate the US president’s visit to the UK next week.

The Jameson pub in Hammersmith will host a welcome party serving Donald Trump’s favourite food and drink. A banner bearing the pub’s temporary new name will be hoisted onto the roof in time for Trump’s arrival and will remain there until he leaves.

Guests will be treated to a BBQ with hot dogs and cheeseburgers, reported to be served up at the White House for the President. These will be washed down with Trump-themed cocktails. Costumes, music and banners will help create the atmosphere of a Trump campaign rally.

Landlord Damien Smyth said the two-day welcome party was a chance to show POTUS that he had a big fan club in London, despite threats of mass protests. Tickets cost £32.

China-Japan-Koreas
China state media slams Trump's 'gang of hoodlums' as tariffs loom
SHANGHAI/WASHINGTON (Reuters) - China's state media lashed out at U.S. President Donald Trump on Friday, accusing the White House of behaving like a "gang of hoodlums" as the world's two biggest economies careened toward the start of an outright trade war.

The United States is set to impose tariffs on $34 billion of Chinese imports from 0401 GMT on Friday and has warned it may ultimately target over $500 billion worth of Chinese goods, or roughly the total amount that the United States imported from China last year.

Beijing has vowed to immediately respond with an equal amount of tariffs of its own against U.S. autos, agricultural and other products, though it is unclear how swiftly the actions could escalate into an all-out trade war.

Ex-leader of Japan doomsday cult involved in 1995 sarin subway attack executed: NHK
[OANN] The former leader of Aum, the Japanese doomsday cult that carried out a sarin gas attack on the Tokyo subway in 1995, was executed on Friday, public broadcaster NHK reported.

Chizuo Matsumoto, who went by the name Shoko Asahara, was the first of 13 scheduled to be hanged for the attacks. Announcements of the other hangings followed through the morning. The justice ministry confirmed the execution of the seven.

The Aum Shinri Kyo, or Aum Supreme Truth cult, which mixed Buddhist and Hindu meditation with apocalyptic teachings, staged a series of crimes including simultaneous sarin gas attacks on Tokyo subway trains during rush hour in March 1995. Sarin, a nerve gas, was originally developed by the Nazis.

The attacks left 13 dead and injured more than 6,000.

#5  A bit more on the process from American Thinker:

First of all, as with these prisoners, they are allowed to cool their heels in a cell following the final disposition of the death penalty verdict. They are allowed months of time to contemplate their crimes and to know that death awaits, but with no idea at all when it will come.

Second, they await the opening of their cell doors in the wee hours of the morning, during the time that sleep normally is deepest, and a swift trip to the gallows as they rub sleep from their eyes. Every night, as sleep overtakes their consciousness, they are aware that their deepest sleep may be interrupted by the hangman

Bottom line (from the article): Ms. Iwata's (mum of one of the victims) peace of mind means more to me than Amnesty International's.

Also a reminder that you don't need to be a nation state *cough*russia*cough* to make organo-phosphate nerve agents.

Budget surplus results in $68 checks for thousands in PA town
LANGHORNE, Pa. (AP) ‐ A Pennsylvania township with more money than it anticipated from increased property tax collection has decided to give the dividends to residents.

Middletown Township in Langhorne sent 14,361 checks for $68 each to all owners of properties with structures on them.

Efforts to keep town expenses down while increasing delinquent-tax collection led to more money than anticipated in the general fund. The township board of supervisors decided to divide a $1 million portion of the surplus evenly among property owners.

Board of Supervisors Chairwoman Amy Strouse tells the Bucks County Courier Times it’s irresponsible for a township to hang on to that level of funding when it has "the opportunity to help people out a little bit."

Strouse says residents feel as though they pay too much in taxes.

Dollar slides to three-week low after US jobs data, euro rises
[PRESSTV] The US dollar fell to three-week lows on Thursday, as the euro gained on strong German industrial orders, while data showing jobs rose less than expected in June plus nagging concerns about global trade also reined in the greenback's recent rally.

Mazen Issa, senior FX strategist, at TD Securities in New York said US economic prospects remain upbeat compared with the rest of the world, but that advantage could be running its course.

"Early flow data has corroborated a return to US dollar assets, but this could be challenging in the coming months if growth abroad stabilizes and twin deficits becomes topical again," Issa said.

"For now, euro/dollar looks poised to test key resistance."

The euro climbed after German industrial orders had a higher-than-expected jump in May following four consecutive monthly drops, as demand from domestic customers and the rest of the euro zone picked up.

At the same time, there has been a softening in US trade rhetoric towards European Union
...the successor to the Holy Roman Empire, only without the Hapsburgs and the nifty uniforms and the dancing...

Record 155,576,000 Employed in June; 10th Record for Trump
"Our economic policy can be summed up in three very simple but beautiful but beautiful words," President Donald Trump told a rally in Montana Thursday evening: "Jobs, jobs, jobs," he said.

On Friday, the Labor Department's Bureau of Labor Statistics said the economy added 213,000 jobs in June, a strong number; the number of employed Americans, 155,576,000, set its tenth record of the Trump presidency; but the number of unemployed Americans (which includes people who are actively looking for jobs) increased by almost half-a-million. The unemployment rate increased two tenths of a point to 4.0 percent.

In June, the nation's civilian noninstitutionalized population, consisting of all people age 16 or older who were not in the military or an institution, reached 257,642,000. Of those, 162,140,000 participated in the labor force by either holding a job or actively seeking one.

The 162,140,000 who participated in the labor force equaled 62.9 percent of the 257,642,000 civilian noninstitutionalized population, a slight increase from last month's 62.7 percent.

#2  This is Pelosi's response:

"The June #JobsReport shows what is at stake from the brewing storm of rising health costs, spiraling trade uncertainty & an economy being hollowed out to enrich big corporations & the wealthiest 1 percent. Americans deserve better than the GOP’s raw deal."

Which translates as: "Hummina. Hummina, hummina."

Axact CEO, 22 others sentenced to 20 years in jail in fake degrees case
[DAWN] A sessions court on Thursday convicted Axact chief executive officer Shoaib Sheikh and 22 others in the fake degrees scam case, awarding them a total of 20 years imprisonment each.

District and Sessions Judge Islamabad Chaudhry Mumtaz Hussain, however, acquitted three co-accused in the case namely retired Lt Col Younas, retired Col Jamil and the wife of Shoaib Sheikh, Ayesha Shoaib, for want of evidence.

The judge also imposed a fine of Rs1.3 million on each of the convicts.

The accused were handed down sentences under various charges, amounting to a collective punishment of 20 years each. However, since all the sentences will run concurrently, the maximum time each convict would have to spend in jail is seven years.

#2  More than likely someone miscalculated the 1/3 rule and or buddy system. But we lost a spelunk-diver in Mexico to a diabetic coma.

His body was found on a sandbank deep into a cave river. Why? He and his assigned partner separated.

Humor from the Resistance or maybe their opponents
some examples from the WaPo article of people giving tweets in the pretense of a second civil war.. it is unknown whether the tweeters are leftists satirizing themselves or conservatives satirizing leftists//
My Darling,
War is hell. The Battle of Trader Joe's lasted many days. We lost half our battalion, some to enemy fire, some to the dreaded Covfefe virus. I still live, but for how much longer I do not know.

Pray for us.

.............
Dearest mother,
After the Prius batteries died we have sought shelter in Chipotle where morale is low, as we are forced to wait days for the avocados to ripen. There is word that they are coming for us with their gluten. Pray for me.
