Chicago Easter weekend update: 9 KIA / 35 WIA
[Sun-Times Media Wire] April 21, 2014 (CHICAGO) -- Easter weekend was no holiday from violence, with shootings claiming the lives of nine across Chicago and leaving 35 wounded, including five children Sunday night.

The five children were shot about 7:40 p.m. in what appeared to be a drive-by shooting in the 6600 block of South Michigan Avenue, authorities said.

An 11-year-old girl in serious-to-critical condition and a 15-year-old girl in fair-to-serious condition were taken to John H. Stroger Jr. Hospital, according to Fire Media Affairs.
Sad, very sad.

Saudi Arabia Removes Health Minister as Deadly Virus Spreads
[BLOOMBERG] Soddy Arabia
...a kingdom taking up the bulk of the Arabian peninsula. Its primary economic activity involves exporting oil and soaking Islamic rubes on the annual hajj pilgrimage. The country supports a large number of princes in whatcha might call princely splendor. When the oil runs out the rest of the world is going to kick sand in the Soddy national face...
removed its health minister from his post as the country struggles to combat an outbreak of a deadly respiratory virus.

Abdullah al-Rabeeah was relieved of his duties and will become an adviser to the royal court, the official Saudi Press Agency said late yesterday. He'll be replaced on an acting basis by Labor Minister Adel Faqih, the SPA said.
There, that'll fix the problem, a new health minister...
Saudi Arabia says 19 people in Jeddah and Riyadh have tested positive for the coronavirus, which causes Middle East respiratory syndrome, or MERS, since April 18. Al-Rabeeah said at a presser in the capital on April 20 that total cases have risen to 244, and the government expects more. At least 93 people have died of the disease since it emerged in Saudi Arabia in September 2012, according to the World Health Organization.

50,000 Member Oklahoma Militia To Support Bundy
Organizers with the Oklahoma Militia say they have members in Nevada who claim Bundy's cattle were unlawfully herded by the bureau.

The Oklahoma Militia says it is made up of nearly 50,000 volunteers.

Members say they are taking Bundy's side and fear this practice could spread to the Sooner State. Scott Shaw said, "Evidently in America we don't actually own the property anymore if you ever did."

Shaw says Oklahoma Militia members are ready to take up arms against the federal government if needed. He said, "It's up to the feds. The ball's in their court! You can do this legally or if you want to try to do a land grab violently, you can do that. We're going to resist you!"

Shaw says the militia has not had to defend Oklahoma from the government yet but members are becoming concerned. Shaw said, "Just look around the country, they are doing it everywhere. If they can do it in Nevada, they can do it in Colorado, Texas. I mean, what's to stop them from coming to Oklahoma? The only thing to stop them is 'We the People'."

However, not everyone agrees.

Sen. Jim Inhofe said, "You've got a bunch of people there trying to take the law into their own hands and they shouldn't be doing that. And the Bureau of Land Management is not government-owned, it's publicly owned. There's a big difference there. I blame both sides."

The Bureau of Land Management released the cattle after confiscating them surrounded by 1000 people carrying tar and feathers.

Berber Protesters Clash with Algeria Police
[An Nahar] Fresh festivities erupted between protesters and security forces in the mainly Berber Kabylie region east of Algiers on Monday, as the authorities announced an inquiry into allegations of police violence.

The security forces confronted around 400 demonstrators in the region's main city blood-stained Tizi Ouzou, firing tear gas and making a number of arrests, an Agence La Belle France Presse journalist reported.

The rally was called to mark the anniversary of the so-called Berber Spring, a movement demanding recognition of Berber language and culture that was brutally suppressed by the Arabizing regime of the time in an operation that climaxed on April 20, 1980.

Opposition parties condemned the violent suppression of anniversary demonstrations, while the national security service (DGSN) announced it had launched an inquiry into the contents of a video showing "police actions that are contrary to professional ethics."

The video, which was posted on the Internet on Sunday, when the violence first broke out, showed police beating protesters in blood-stained Tizi Ouzou.

"The contents of the video shows actions that are unacceptable and damage the reputation of the police force, whatever their motivations," DGSN front man Djilali Boudalia said, cited by official media.

He said the head of the security service, General Abdelghani Hamel, had ordered "disciplinary measures to be taken against anyone who violates the dignity of the citizen."

The Rally for Culture and Democracy, a secular opposition party with strong Kabyle roots, denounced the police repression which it said "contrasted with the peaceful impulse that inspired citizens to come and express their loyalty to the message of the Berber Spring."

British PM Criticized for Saying UK is Christian Country
[An Nahar] British Prime Minister David Cameron
... has stated that he is certainly a big Thatcher fan, but I don't know whether that makes me a Thatcherite, which means he's not. Since he is not deeply ideological he lacks core principles and is easily led. He has been described as certainly not a Pitt, Elder or Younger, but he does wear a nice suit so maybe he's Beau Brummel ...
was accused on Monday of sowing sectarianism and division after stressing in an Easter message that Britannia was still a "Christian country".
Define "Christian"...
The criticism came in an open letter signed by 55 public figures, including writers Philip Pullman and Terry Pratchett and the Nobel Prize-winning scientists John Sulston and Harold Kroto.

Cameron, a member of the established Church of England, has been increasingly vocal about his beliefs recently, and in an article published last week urged Christians to be "more evangelical" about their faith.

Commentators suggest he is trying to build bridges with the Church, which opposed government plans to introduce gay marriage, and following vocal criticism from many clergy about the impact of the government's austerity measures.

"Some people feel that in this ever more secular age we shouldn't talk about these things. I completely disagree," the Conservative prime minister wrote in the Church Times, an Anglican newspaper.

"I believe we should be more confident about our status as a Christian country, more ambitious about expanding the role of faith-based organizations, and, frankly, more evangelical about a faith that compels us to get out there and make a difference to people's lives."

Putin Signs Decree to Rehabilitate Crimean Tatars
[An Nahar] Russian President Vladimir Putin
...Second and fourth President of the Russian Federation and the first to remain sober. Putin is credited with bringing political stability and re-establishing something like the rule of law, which occasionally results in somebody dropping dead from polonium poisoning. Under Putin, a new group of business magnates controlling significant swathes of Russia's economy has emerged, all of whom have close personal ties to Putin. The old bunch, without close personal ties to Putin, are in jail or in exile or dead...
said on Monday he had signed a decree rehabilitating Crimea's Tatars, an ethnic group accused of collaborating with Nazi Germany and exiled under Stalin.

"I have signed a decree to rehabilitate the Crimean Tatar population of Crimea, the Armenian population, Germans, Greeks, all those who suffered during Stalin's purges," Putin told a government meeting.

Crimea's 300,000 Tatars, who make up around 12 percent of the population, largely boycotted a disputed referendum last month in which nearly 97 percent of voters chose to split from Ukraine and join Russia.

The decree is seen is an attempt to win the sympathies of Tatars, who view the Kremlin with distrust and are seeking a quota system to ensure power sharing in the local government.

Crimea's entire Tatar population was deported to Central Asia at the end of World War Two.

They began returning to Crimea under former Soviet leader Mikhail Gorbachev and became Ukrainian nationals after that country won independence from the Soviet Union in 1991.

Russia Now Surpasses Everyone in Infantry Body Armor and Firearms
"If the Russians are coming across mechanized, with airborne and infantry units wearing their body armor, it basically means the Ukrainian rifles have no ability to penetrate the body armor worn by the Russian troops, meaning you're talking about having to shoot somebody six, seven, eight times, in the chest," Mr. Traudt said. "They're going to get bumped, but there's no lethality involved."

Elite Russian troops are displaying a new arsenal of body armor, individual weapons, armor-piercing ammunition and collar radios -- a menu of essential gear that gives them a big tactical advantage against a lesser-equipped Ukrainian army.

The Russians, in their new 6B43 model body armor, issued chest and back plates made of titanium and hard carbide boron ceramics.

"The stuff they have is impervious to 5.56, whereas our body armor is not completely proven against their weapons," Gen. Scales said.

Gen. Scales said the Russians carry AK-74s whose magazine is loaded with 5.45 "steel core" ammunition -- a round that on April 8 the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives banned from importation because the agency deemed it armor-piercing.

Gen. Scales described the 5.45 as "extremely lethal against any kind of body armor."

#3  Individual Body Armor [IBA] is a good piece of kit, but it is not seamless and like everything else, it has downsides.

IBA has non-plated areas which can be defeated by a well trained marksman or golden BB. Obviously, a head shot is nearly always fatal. A non-lethal neck, shoulder, army, hand, groin, leg, or foot wound is worse. Non-lethal wounds not only take the casualty out of action, but those evacuating him as well. Medical evacuation vehicles and evac sites can become high-value targets.

IBA is bulky, heavy, and decreases mobility difficult. It is hot in the summer and dramatically increases target size, especially when wearing cold weather clothing and equipment.

IBA does not like DshK 12.7mm [see Romanian ISAF AFG partner happy-snap] or M2 Browning .50 caliber rounds at any range. IBA particularly dislikes IED's, RPG's, ground emplaced mines, mortar, and arty fire.

Posted by: Besoeker || 04/22/2014 4:17 Comments || Top||

#4  Besoeker

IBA is not imprevipous to tac nukes but the problem is few :-) infantrymen carry tac nukes. Ditto for Ma Deuce or RPGs. Also if the enemy can shoot at any part of your body while you are restricted to about one third of his the end result is you lose. As simple as that.

Finally if my memory is any good firing at med evac vehicles and sites could land you in front of a firing squad or with a rope around your neck depending if you are field executed by the enemy as a war criminal (yes, a captain or above may sentence you to death for violating Generva Conventions and it is perfectly leagl) or if your own side sends you in front of court martial.

#6  Good body armor is a easy procurement. Well trained soldiers in comat first aid, efficient and quick evac to very skilled med personnel, not a easy buy. One without the other means in some cases, you just bleed out slower.

#8  I wonder how it holds up to the old-fashioned .30-'06 bullet? Or .303 Enfield? Even if they don't penetrate, I would think just the 'thump' would slow one down a lot. And there are still quite a few rifles out there that shoot that stuff.
Posted by: Glenmore || 04/22/2014 11:37 Comments || Top||

#9  Given a choice in combat, would you rather be wearing American or Russian armor?
Posted by: gorb || 04/22/2014 12:32 Comments || Top||

#10  American. Battle tested against the large caliber stuff and explosives the Iraqi and Afghanis use, and allows for proper tactical mobility. Nothing drives military innovation quite so well as sustained combat.
Posted by: OldSpook || 04/22/2014 14:58 Comments || Top||

#11  But more importantly, I'd rather carry a 7.62NATO than a 5.56. Nobody has anything that stops that and still remains mobile enough for tactical use.
Posted by: OldSpook || 04/22/2014 15:00 Comments || Top||

#12  One other note: the article says "Elite" Russian units. This means spec ops. Not line troops. Same goes with the US - Spec Ops have access to the cutting edge stuff that are never practical/affordable for line troops. Go check the examples shown in the Crimea. Same old russian gear on the line troops. So don't compare their Spec Ops to our line or vice versa. Apples to Apples, folks.
Posted by: OldSpook || 04/22/2014 15:03 Comments || Top||

#13  Regarding gear - with the possible exception of German field rations, US made weapons and gear are the best in the world, hands down.
Posted by: Besoeker || 04/22/2014 15:19 Comments || Top||

#14  I believe all of the body armor can be penetrated by the small caliber SLAP projectiles. I saw a write up on the modern SLAP. The 30-06 was able to penetrate 2 inches of armor plate. The 5.56 was able to make it through 1 inch.

#1  This is what happens when all the manufacturing jobs are shipped out of country. Most that is left is hospitality, real estate and construction work. In long and hard downturns, those industries get hit the hardest.

#2  No great mystery. Check out this German on-line advert from Hormbach, a Home Depot type store. Not all, but most of their products are German, Austrian, or Swiss made. We've been sold out to the Chinese.

#4  IMHO:
Rent seeking via debt to fix incomes taxes and a more for-sale establishment.

Jobs don't get shipped off shore they get priced off shore by rent-seeking raising costs.

#5  Or you could view it as China exporting its unemployment to the US. We're in the sixth year of the Great Recession without the trade barriers of Smoot Hawley that got a lot of blame for the Depression. Maybe its time for a reexamination.

$1.35B Canadian carbon captures 1 million tons of CO2
Someone please do the match for me, from the headline. Izzat like $1350 a ton? And a million tons once, or every year?
The carbon trunk line is a 240-kilometre pipeline that will carry 1.8 million tonnes of CO2 each year from a bitumen refinery and a fertilizer plant in the Industrial Heartland area to Clive. It will be forced underground into a depleted oilfield, stimulating new production through enhanced oil recovery methods.

Quest is expected to cost $1.35 billion. It is being built on behalf of Athabasca Oil Sands Project joint-venture owners Shell (60 per cent), Chevron (20 per cent) and Marathon Oil (20 per cent).

The CO2 will be injected into three storage wells, each more than two kilometres underground, and trapped in porous sandstone under multiple layers of impermeable geological formations.
Sort of like fracking, only gooder, 'cuz it's green. So it won't be allowed to cause earthquakes, like fracking does!
"The Quest project, for us, is a big part of achieving our vision of having the same CO2 footprint from a barrel of heavy oil that we have from conventional oil sources," said John Rhind, Shell Canada's vice-president, oilsands. "It's very fundamentally important to our investment portfolio to make sure that happens.
So now Champ can approve the Keystone XL Project!!! It's gonna be carbon neutral!!!!

#1  That's right, you guessed it. The EPA has plenty of heartburn with injection wells.

University Cancels Panel on Gays Deemed 'Immoral' by Turkey's Hezbollah
[An Nahar] A Turkish university cancelled a panel on gay rights after it came under harsh criticism from Islamic turbans who branded the event as "immoral", a liberal daily reported Monday.

The Ilke news agency, which is close to Turkey's Islamist Hezbollah movement made up of ethnic Kurds, condemned the timing of the conference, which had been planned for last Thursday, because it coincided with a week of events dedicated to the birth of Prophet Mohammed, the newspaper Radikal reported.

Ilke, based in the Kurdish-majority southeastern city of Diyarbakir, also challenged the organizer, assistant professor of architecture Levent Senturk, to prove that he was not a homosexual, the report said.

Neither the university nor the agency was immediately available for comment.

After the conference was cancelled, 12 academics from the Artuklu University in Mardin, another southeastern city where the event was to have been held, released a joint statement saying: "Our scientific events should not be prevented by hate speech, defamation or ostracism."

"Our academic events never insult any kind of beliefs, ethnicities, languages, religions or life styles," the statement said.

Unlike other Mohammedan countries, same-sex relationships are not illegal in Turkey, a formally secular nation where prostitution and sex-change operations are legal.

Turkish police clash with union members in Istanbul
[Iran Press TV] Violent festivities have broken out in the Turkish city of Istanbul after police forces prevented labor union members from holding a presser near the city's main square, Taksim.

The violence erupted on Monday when security forces attacked labor union members who tried to head to the city's iconic Gezi Park, which is next to the square.

Leaders of the unions wanted to declare their intention to assemble at Taksim Square on May 1.

However,
the difference between stupidity and genius is that genius has its limits...
Turkey's Interior Ministry stressed that the government would not permit the unions to hold rally at Taksim Square.

Reports said at least one person was injured as security forces fired tear gas to disperse the unionists. Several people are also said to have been incarcerated
Drop the gat, Rocky, or you're a dead 'un!

On May 31, 2013, Turkish police broke up a sit-in held at Taksim Square against a proposal to demolish Gezi Park.

The violence turned into nationwide demonstrations against the ruling Justice and Development Party and Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan
... Turkey's version of Mohammed Morsi only they haven't dumped him yet...
, with police using water cannons, tear gas and rubber bullets against the demonstrators.

Several people were killed and many more injured and detained as police forcefully cracked down on the protests.

They said that hunting of the internationally protected bird was banned in Pakistain also, but the federal government issued special permits to Gulf states' royals.

Permits, which are person specific and could not be used by anyone else, allow the holders to hunt up to100 houbara bustards in 10 days in the area allocated, excluding reserved and protected areas.

The report dated Feb 4, 2014 (No: 216-219 HB/CHI) says that during the 21-day safari the prince hunted the birds for 15 days in the reserved and protected areas, poached birds in other areas for six days and took rest for two days.

But I sure love to eat 'em with mustard!

When I'm home with my flock
In my platinum bathtub of custard."

Seriously, anyone know how this works? Do they eat some dainty bit and throw the rest away? Send home hampers of iced bustard to the tribe?
