Trespasser Freed From Pipe At Water Plant In New Jersey
HT to Insty. Note this wasn't "Tony" or "Joe"... Non-WOT?
Rescuers have freed a man who had been stuck for hours in a pipe at a water treatment plant in New Jersey.
"The water smelled funny"
Officials told CBS 2 around 11:30 a.m. that 26-year-old Asef Mohamed, of Manalapan, had been freed and airlifted to an area hospital. He was 10 to 12 feet down the pipe, which was not in use, WCBS 880′s Levon Putney reported.
"Put the rope around your neck and we'll lift you"
United Water spokesman Rich Henning said Mohamed broke into the plant that treats and pumps water for the township of Manalapan. Workers heard cries for help coming from the pipe around 7 a.m. Friday.

“This was a person that purposely climbed a six-foot fence with three or four layers of barbed wire on top,” Henning said.

United Water officials said they have no idea why Mohamed did it, but are now looking at ways to tighten up security, Putney reported.
"We have no idea, but he seems to have been motivated. Possibly by racism"

NYT Shocked to Learn "Lone Survivor" Is Box Office Hit
Moviegoers have stubbornly refused to care about war movies set in Afghanistan,
He means left-wing anti-military bloviations like "Lions for Lambs", which didn't sell out the Hahvahd faculty lounge
contributing to modest prerelease expectations for Peter Berg's "Lone Survivor."
Modest expectations among whom? Personally I expected it to sell out the Superdome.
But ticket buyers, especially those in heartland states,
You know the type: rednecks, bitter clingers, oil patch workers, farmers, the kind of people whose children actually defend the country
surprised Hollywood over the weekend and powered "Lone Survivor" to an estimated $38.9 million in sales, roughly double the total that most analysts expected and easily enough for first place at the North American box office.

Adapted from Marcus Luttrell's memoir, "Lone Survivor: The Eyewitness Account of Operation Redwing and the Lost Heroes of Seal Team 10," the film cost about $40 million to make. It received a rare A-plus score from ticket buyers in exit polls
and therefore will be completely ignored by the Oscars etc.
Just like 300 and just unlike Lion for Lambs, in Lone Survivor we know who the heroes are. And why we're cheering for them.

Nun Gives Birth in Italy, Names Baby Francis
[An Nahar] A Salvadorean nun who said she had no idea she was pregnant gave birth in Italia this week after she felt stomach cramps in her convent and was rushed to hospital, Italian media reported on Friday.

The 31-year-old mother and her baby boy, who weighs 3.5 kilograms (nine pounds), are doing well and other new mothers in Rieti hospital have begun collecting clothes and donations for her, the reports said.

"I did not know I was pregnant. I only felt a stomach pain," the nun was quoted as saying at the hospital, the Italian news agency ANSA reported.

La Repubblica said she gave birth on Wednesday.

ANSA said the nun had named her baby La Belle Francesco (Francis) -- also the pope's chosen title and one of the most popular names in Italia, where St Francis of Assisi is the much-loved national patron saint.

The hospital could not be reached for comment.

The nun belongs to the "Little Disciples of Jesus" convent in Campomoro near Rieti, which manages an old people's home and reports said she would keep the baby. Her fellow nuns were quoted saying they were "very surprised".

California Declares Drought State of Emergency
[An Nahar] Caliphornia, an impregnable bastion of the Democratic Party,'s worst drought in a century is devastating the state's agriculture and destroying its forestland, which is being consumed by wildfire, Governor Jerry Governor Moonbeam Brown
... those who ignore history are bound to repeat it ...
said Friday as he declared a state emergency.

The emergency declaration allows Caliphornia, an impregnable bastion of the Democratic Party, to access federal help to battle the drought, which has left huge swathes of tinder-dry forest vulnerable to catching fire.

On Thursday, a massive blaze raged just outside Los Angeles, damaging several homes and forcing residents to evacuate the area, where the fire risk had been elevated for weeks.

Brown urged residents of his state to reduce their water use by at least 20 percent.

"I've declared this emergency and I'm calling on all Caliphornia, an impregnable bastion of the Democratic Party,ns to conserve water in every way possible," he said in his statement.

"We can't make it rain," he added.

"But we can be much better prepared for the terrible consequences that Caliphornia, an impregnable bastion of the Democratic Party,'s drought now threatens, including dramatically less water for our farms and communities, and increased fires in both urban and rural areas."

Brown told news hounds in the Socialist paradise of San Francisco
...where God struck dead Anton LaVey, home of the Sydney Ducks, ruled by Vigilance Committee from 1859 through 1867, reliably and volubly Democrat since 1964...
that the current conditions were "the worst drought that Caliphornia, an impregnable bastion of the Democratic Party, has ever seen since records (began) about 100 years ago," media reports said.

The region is suffering its third dry winter in a row, highlighted by the Los Angeles blaze.

Caliphornia, an impregnable bastion of the Democratic Party, and other western U.S. states are routinely hit with wildfires during the summer, but winter fires like the ones currently raging, are relatively rare.

Caliphornia, an impregnable bastion of the Democratic Party,'s rivers and reservoirs have reached record lows, with only 20 percent of the normal average supplies of water from melting snowpack, which flows down from mountains like the Sierra Nevada north-to-south range.

#2  Build a megalopolis in a desert environment and wonder why there are period of critical water emergencies. You would think the Californista Greenies would have adopted the policies from elsewhere in that developers can't build unless they can show where they get 'new' water from. Depresses development, but keeps the population relative to what the land can really sustain.

#9  Problem isn't the lack of water sources, it's the greenies artificial limitations on developing alternative sources, as well as their screwing with what normal/natural sources they have. This Week in Guns, January 18th, 2014
By Chris Covert
Rantburg.com

This week's terminal fascist comes from Massachusetts. (You were shocked, weren't you? Go ahead admit it!)

A Selectman, which I assume is similar to a city councilman, wants to give local police the power to inspect private arms stowage to ensure compliance with the law. The sad part is, a lot of Massachusetts' citizens will probably go along with it.

An article sponsored by Ammoland.com lays out the likely road American leftists will take for gun confiscation: mental illness. This is part of what the left does. Defines an amorphous group that can't actually vote, which can be easily demonized and then apply new draconian rules against them, which wind up affecting everyone and slowly strangle the Right to Keep and Bear Arms to an ever larger cross section of society.

California Congressman Darrell Issa says that Obama's Alcohol Tobacco & Firearms rogue agency is setting up firearms purchase stings in several large cities. ATF: creating criminals for us to revile.

Last week the wife of Atlanta Falcons quarterback Ryan Tannehill, Lauren Tannehill accidentally left an AR-15 in the trunk of a rental car, so hijinks ensued. The customers who found it were instantly afraid to touch the weapon, and called the local sheriff in Broward County. The sheriff's office said: "Though dangerous if it would have landed in the wrong hands, it's not criminal." If it was in law enforcement hands, it was in the wrong hands.

Speaking of cops, Torrance, California policeman skates on changes in an accidental shooting.

#1  Dem uses child’s death to take aim at thriving hobby industry.

Foto in 'Daily Caller' the article depicts an "airsoft sniper" at play.... somewhere in the UK. One must wonder if this lad's grandfather would have participated in such events after his return from 7 years Africa in 1945, or an uncle from the war in the Falklands ?

Historical reenactments aside, when violent death becomes a "hobby," perhaps there is a need for a second look, a sanity check, a caution.

Monarchy debate in Libya
[MAGHAREBIA] A debate is under way in Libya about the best form of government for the country.

Some citizens are calling for a monarchy under King Idris' heir Mohammed Hasan al-Rida al-Senussi, others reject the idea outright, and some say the issue should be decided by popular referendum.

"What we're interested in now is the country's development, stability, reconstruction and unity," said lawyer Mansour al-Ramli, 34.

"I approve the prince's return to office because he is the best given his loyalty," he said.

But Sharifa al-Fesi, a Benghazi-based journalist working for Brnieq newspaper, said that Libyans didn't want "to return to the past".

"When the revolution took place, we deleted the name of his uncle, King Idris al-Senussi, from the anthem because there was a group that didn't like monarchy," he told Magharebia.

"We want someone who would secure this country for us and establish security in Libya," al-Fesi said.

Soaad Ali al-Magharabi, 34, an employee at the Electricity Institute, also rejects the idea of a monarchy for Libya.

"I don't approve of the prince's return because he has lived as a prince and doesn't know the tragedy of Libyans. I'm also against the rule of Libya by anyone who lived overseas and doesn't know anything about Libyans' concerns," he said.

"We don't want a hereditary royal regime where the affairs of state are put in the hands of one family or one person," Mohammed Salem Ali Salem agreed. "Why don't we elect a president of the state?" he asked.

Some people raised the prospects of improved security under a king.

Ahmed Beshir said, "The prince has every right to rule. Wasn't the revolution staged to remove injustice and restore rights to their rightful owners? Wasn't it said that Qadaffy's coup was a coup against legitimacy?"

It's only fair to restore power to those who own it, he said.

"After that, change can take place via democratic means through an elected parliament," he added.

Saad al-Dinali, a journalist at the Press Support Authority, said, "Everyone knows that the current stage in Libya is tough and unusual. Therefore, everyone is trying as much as they can to have a share in the Libyan cake."

"There are changes on the ground now and we need the prince to show his position from so we can have an opinion about him returning to rule Libya again," al-Dinali continued. "One of the most prominent issues is the form of government: will it be a constitutional or absolute monarchy?"

"Now the Prince needs to take the initiative and clearly explain these things to us, and after that, the issue can be raised to all Libyans in a referendum about monarchy," he said.

"If the prince's return to office will lead to the country's stability, why not?" asked Mahmoud Ali al-Barghathy, a 43-year-old engineer at the Man-Made River Company.

Africa Subsaharan
U.S. Urges U.N. Force to Go after Rwandan Rebels in DR Congo
"Let's you and him fight," the American envoy quoted the Secretary of State paraphrasing our beloved president's very own words, demonstrating the seriousness with which the situation is being held. He did not harumph, not even a little, which goes to show the depths of his (or possibly her) professionalism.
[An Nahar] The United States on Friday urged the U.N. mission in the Democratic Republic of the Congo
...formerly the Congo Free State, Belgian Congo, Zaire, and who knows what else, not to be confused with the Brazzaville Congo aka Republic of Congo, which is much smaller and much more (for Africa) stable. DRC gave the world Patrice Lumumba and Joseph Mobutu, followed by years of tedious civil war. Its principle industry seems to be the production of corpses. With a population of about 74 million it has lots of raw material...
to "redouble its efforts" in the fight against Rwandan Hutu rebels in the restive east of the country.

U.S. special envoy to Africa's Great Lakes region, Russ Feingold, pointed to the success of Congolese troops backed by a U.N. intervention force in November in stopping the M23 rebel movement in eastern North Kivu province.

"The FDLR (Democratic Forces for the Liberation of Rwanda) need a similar end as the M23," said Feingold in a telephone press briefing before leaving on a trip to the region.

He said Washington fully supports the U.N. mission in the DR Congo, known as MONUSCO, but called on it to step up its efforts against the Rwandan rebel group.

"It is essential that MONUSCO, in line with its mandate, redouble its efforts to hold to its commitment to conduct operations in support of the (fight) against the FDLR," added Feingold, who spoke from Johannesburg.

In March last year, the U.N. Security Council gave MONUSCO an intervention brigade of 3,000 troops with an unprecedented offensive mandate, to help "neutralize" all the gangs active in the volatile east of DR Congo.

The FDLR ethnic Hutu Rwandan rebels have been in mineral-rich North Kivu for some 20 years and include in their ranks some who participated in the 1994 genocide of Tutsis in Rwanda.

In December, the Congolese army and U.N. troops launched operations against the FDLR in North-Kivu province, but have not engaged in combat.

On Wednesday, the U.N.'s special deputy representative in DR Congo, Abdallah Wafy, said that fighting the FDLR was different from the battle against the M23 because the Rwandan rebels move around with women and kiddies, raising the risk of civilians getting killed in an attack on the group.

Feingold in his phone briefing called for offensive action against the gangs while at the same time encouraging the demobilization and peaceful reinsertion of fighters who surrender their arms.

Since its victory against the M23 movement, the Kinshasa government has vowed to go after all gangs sowing unrest in the country's east.

Arabia
Former President stable after surgery
[Yemen Post] After claims that President Ali Abdullah died in hospital following health complications this Thursday, his aides confirmed that such allegations are completely outlandish.

Former President-for-Life Saleh
... exemplifying the Arab's propensity to combine brutality with incompetence...
is said to be recuperated in Sana'a, Saudi German hospital after a scheduled ear operation. His personal aid told news hounds that while he remained under observation, his vitals were strong. He is expected to recover without any complications.

Earlier this Thursday several news outlets quoted medical sources as saying that the former president had died following a heart attack, others claimed that he was taken to hospital some days ago and had failed to recover from a coma.

As it turned out, President Saleh suffered neither the former, nor the latter.

This is not the first time former President Saleh has been wrongly reported dead. Back in 2011, when a bomb tore through the presidential mosque where he was performing Friday congregational prayer, President Saleh was within minutes of the blast rumoured dead.

In critical condition, he was transported to Soddy Arabia
...a kingdom taking up the bulk of the Arabian peninsula. Its primary economic activity involves exporting oil and soaking Islamic rubes on the annual hajj pilgrimage. The country supports a large number of princes in whatcha might call princely splendor. When the oil runs out the rest of the world is going to kick sand in the Soddy national face...
where he underwent eight back to back surgeries. Although President Saleh made a remarkable recovery given the extent of the injuries he sustained in the kaboom, his health has been ever since the subject of much debate and conjectures.

Three years after his resignation from power, former President Saleh still commands much media attention; a man of many controversies and contrasts, very much to the image of the country he led for over three decades with an iron fist.

China-Japan-Koreas
S Korea brushes off North calls to halt insults, scrap drills
[Pak Daily Times] South Korea on Friday scoffed at North Korea's proposal for a mutual moratorium on verbal mud-slinging, and rejected Pyongyang's renewed calls to cancel planned military drills with the United States.

"We don't slander North Korea so there is nothing for us to stop," Unification Ministry front man Kim Eui-Do told news hounds.

He was responding to a surprise proposal late Thursday by the North's top military body, the National Defence Commission (NDC), that the two rivals halt "all acts of provoking and slandering" on January 30 -- the eve of the Lunar New Year.

The Unification Ministry argued that the offer was moot, as the only provocation and slander came from North Korea.

Despite North Korean leader Kim Jong-Un's New Year speech urging greater cooperation, Pyongyang has "continued to slander and threaten us," front man Kim said.

The NDC also renewed calls for South Korea to scrap its annual joint military exercises with the United States, which Pyongyang routinely condemns as provocative rehearsals for invasion.

But Kim stressed that the drills -- slated to begin at the end of February -- would go ahead as planned.

"Our military exercises are routine defensive drills, like those conducted by all sovereign states," Kim said.

Last year's exercises were held in the wake of North Korea's third and largest nuclear test, and prompted months of escalated military tensions that saw Pyongyang issue apocalyptic threats of nuclear war against the South and the United States.

This time around, North Korea appears to be adopting a carrot-and-stick policy, one day warning of "an unimaginable holocaust" if the drills go ahead and the next offering an end to cross-border insults.

The Unification Ministry suggested the North stop complaining about the "legitimate" exercises and focus instead on taking steps to abandon its nuclear weapons programme.

Kim also reiterated South Korean President Park Geun-Hye's recent call for the "humanitarian" resumption over the Lunar New Year of reunions for families separated by the 1950-53 Korean War.

The North has rejected Park's proposal, citing the planned South-US exercises as a major barrier.

Analysts said both sides were jockeying for the moral high ground ahead of what is gearing up to be a re-run of last year's display of military brinksmanship, which triggered global concerns of a full-scale conflict.

"They both want to be able to accuse the other of bearing responsibility for any surge in tensions," said Yang Moo-Jin a professor at the University of Korean Studies in Seoul.

#3  But the burning question is:

Are they fully compliant with their diversity-awareness training requirements?
Posted by: Pappy || 01/18/2014 12:05 Comments || Top||

#4  The problem is, First you enlist, THEN get placed where the MILITARY wants you.

I remember MY enlistment we were herded into a large auditorium where an Officer stood up and said
" You men in the first roe, You're Marines, the second row Coast Guard, the third row Merchant Marine, and the rest You're Navy".

"This startled me as I Enlisted as Navy.

So we were dismissed and filed out, an Officer stepped in front of me and said, "Hold it, Marine"
said "I enlisted, I was NOT drafted, I'm Navy, You put me where you want, and in a different service, That's Illegal,
Now MOVE before I walk over you".

He looked like he was going to say something, then shrugged, let me pass and stopped the next fellow n line behind me, I thought that was Odd, (To say the least) But I passed through, I thought it strange, that I spoke up, and no one else did,

I think they didn't expect me to speak up and resist, and it blew their minds,

So I went to "Great Lakes Naval Training Center" for Boot Camp.

If they treat ALL recruits as Cattle, I can see where they'd have trouble.

#5  Jim, it hasn't been that way in about 40 years. These days you go to a specific service recruiter. Then test (ASVAB), get a list you qualify for and which that specific service needs, choose which one you want from that list, sign the contract, optionally take the oath at that time, go to the Military entrance processing station, finalize the paperwork with your service, take (or reaffirm) the oath, and ship out to your basic training.

#8  Then test (ASVAB), get a list you qualify for..

...which apparently for over quarter who take it qualify them for the exit door thanks to our highly financed primary and secondary education system. That's just the ones who try. If education reformers really wanted to cause an earthquake, make all seniors take it. You want a metric, there's a metric.

#9  P2K,Fire for effect. Dead on target. Use the ASVAB as the standardized measure.
Posted by: OldSpook || 01/18/2014 16:05 Comments || Top||

#10  No, if educators want a real earthquake, have them take the same qualifying tests their seniors take for college OR military. And take them every year, must get a decent score to remain employed.
Posted by: Anguper Hupomosing9418 || 01/18/2014 16:27 Comments || Top||

#11  I think Y'ALL MISSED THE POINT, I was NAVY, and they wanted to put me in a whole different service, Odd, as I enlisted as a Machinist and since I was Trade School Trained, an E-3 not drafted. (An oddity right there)

This was also when the military ran out of service numbers, and the Social Security wouldn't let them use the SS number ,So I got an odd Service Number, easy to remember though B-30-10-10.
Posted by: Redneck Jim || 01/18/2014 18:22 Comments || Top||

#12  No, we got it just fine. The wonders of bureaucracy, and all that.

Many of us who went in the military experienced foul-ups. Most of have learned to let it go over the years.

Tension mounts in Thailand after blast wounds 36 protesters
[Egypt Independent] An bomb tossed at anti-government protesters maimed 36 in central Bangkok on Friday and tension rippled through the Thai capital after several days of relative calm that had suggested the movement was running out of steam.

Protest leader Suthep Thaugsuban blamed the government for the attack and said it would not dent the morale of thousands who on Monday stepped up a two-month agitation, bringing parts of Bangkok to a standstill and occupying ministries.

"The kaboom was the government's doing," Suthep said at a rally later on the edge of the capital's Lumpini Park. "We are not afraid and we will fight on."
