Lawyer behind Menendez prostitution allegations recants, fabricates media conspiracy
"It seems clear to me Figueroa is under pressure to change his story," Daily Caller editor Tucker Carlson said Friday morning.
No, reeeeeeeaaaalllyy?????

#1  Figueroa blamed four news outlets — CNN, The Daily Caller, Telemundo and Univision — for allegedly encouraging him to fabricate false accusations about Menendez. Pressed further by investigators, Figueroa alleged that a man employed by this news site named “Carlos” offered the lawyer $5,000 to invent the prostitution allegations,

Did they pay you? Or not?

-Short Attention Span Theater-
The Day the Secret Service Almost Shot Mahmoud Ahmadinejad
One morning in September 2006, during the United Nations General Assembly, President George W. Bush's daily intelligence brief contained a particularly chilling item. It was three sentences long, and it scared the hell out of the dozen or so White House officials cleared to read it. According to one official, it began, "A U.S. Secret Service agent, in an apparent accident, discharged his shotgun as Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad was loading his motorcade at the InterContinental Hotel yesterday."

The agent was adjusting the side-mounted shotgun on one of the motorcade's armored follow-up Suburbans when it discharged. "Everyone just stopped. The Iranians looked at us and we looked at the Iranians. The agent began to apologize. Ahmadinejad just turned his head and got into his car."

And that was it.

Study Sounds Warning on Drinking and Skiing
[An Nahar] One in five people ski having consumed alcohol, and 29 percent of these hurtle down the piste over the legal limit for driving, an Austrian survey showed Thursday.

"People skiing under the influence of alcohol pose an increased risk to themselves and to other people on the slopes," said Alexandra Kuehnelt-Leddihn from the Austrian Road Safety Board (KFV).

Alcohol slows down reaction times and impairs coordination and judgement of speed and distance, said the KFV, which tested 600 people at several Austrian ski resorts for the survey.

"People greatly underestimate the likelihood of an accident," said Kuehnelt-Leddihn. "Even a small amount of alcohol can be dangerous."

Crack-down on criminal gangs continues in Tripoli; kidnapped family freed
[Libya Herald] Tripoli
...a confusing city, one end of which is located in Lebanon and the other end of which is the capital of Libya. Its chief distinction is being mentioned in the Marine Hymn...
's Joint Security Force carried out a series of raids last night, Wednesday, throughout the capital on premises being used by criminal gangs. At one building, a Libyan family, which had been held illegally and apparently subjected to torture, was found and freed.

The premises were occupied by a group said to be conducting unauthorised investigations and making arrests, according to the Interior Ministry's spokesperson, Magdi Al-Arafi.

In another raid, alcohol was seized. The authorities confiscated 40 bottles of alcohol along with car ownership booklets and identity documentation in a building alleged to be a criminal headquarters in the Salahuddin area.

Weapons and ammunition were seized in both raids.

International Court Detains Rwandan-Born Warlord
[ABCNEWS.GO] African warlord Bosco Ntaganda was taken from the U.S. Embassy in Rwanda on Friday and flown to International Criminal Court
... where Milosevich died of old age before being convicted ...
in The Hague, where he faces charges including murder, rape and persecution in a rebel group's deadly reign of terror that gripped eastern Congo a decade ago.

Ntaganda arrived and was taken to a cell shortly before midnight Friday, nearly seven years after he was first indicted. His transfer was hailed as a crucial step in bringing to justice one of Africa's most notorious warlords. It was also a welcome relief to a court that earlier this week dropped charges against a senior Kenyan suspect for lack of evidence and late last year acquitted another rebel leader accused of atrocities in Congo.

Nicknamed "The Terminator" because of his reputation for ruthlessness in battle, Ntaganda became a symbol of impunity in Africa, at times playing tennis in eastern Congo, apparently without fear of arrest.

Central African Rebels Head Toward Capital
[An Nahar] Rebels in Central Africa on Friday were advancing on the capital Bangui after forcing their way through a key checkpoint manned by international forces, a military source told Agence France Presse.

The rebels from the Seleka coalition had shot their way through the Damara checkpoint, some 75 kilometers (47 miles) north of the capital, around 11:00 GMT, said a source with the Multinational Force of Central Africa (FOMAC) which was manning the roadblock.

"The rebels stormed the checkpoint and passed through... There were shots but no wounded," said the source on condition of anonymity. "They are on the road to Bangui. We're on the highest alert."

Anti-Semitism is British Muslim community's 'dirty secret'
Mehdi Hasan, political editor of the Huffington Post UK, said that anti-Semitism in Britain's Muslim community is so frequent it has become "routine and commonplace". He described how anti-Jewish sentiment in Muslim society is now seen in both young and old and is no longer a "hallmark of first-generation immigrants".

He said, "Growing up, I always assumed that this obsession with "the Jews" was a hallmark of the "first-generation" immigrants from the subcontinent. In recent years, I've been depressed to discover that there are plenty of "second-generation" Muslim youths, born and bred in multiracial Britain, who have drunk the anti-Semitic Kool-Aid. I'm often attacked by them for working in the 'Jewish owned media'".

Hasan gave the example of former Labour peer Lord Ahmed, who was recently suspended from the party for saying Jews "who own newspapers and TV channels" were responsible for his conviction and jail sentence after he was involved in a fatal car crash.

Ahmed reportedly made the comments in Pakistan during an Urdu-language broadcast, according to the Sunday Times. He was reported to have said, "My case became more critical because I went to Gaza to support Palestinians. My Jewish friends who own newspapers and TV channels opposed this."

Hasan wrote, "It pains me to have to admit this but anti-Semitism isn't just tolerated in some sections of the British Muslim community; it's routine and commonplace. Any Muslims reading this article - if they are honest with themselves - will know instantly what I am referring to. It's our dirty little secret. You could call it the banality of Muslim anti-Semitism.

"The truth is that the virus of anti-Semitism has infected members of the British Muslim community, both young and old.

"It is sheer hypocrisy for Muslims to complain of Islamophobia in every nook and cranny of British public life, to denounce the newspapers for running Muslim-baiting headlines, and yet ignore the rampant anti-Semitism in our own backyard. We cannot credibly fight Islamophobia while making excuses for Judaeophobia."

Freedom of the Press in the U.K. (1771-2013), R.I.P.
The freedom of the press in the U.K. has died by an overwhelming vote by the House of Commons, with only 12 dissenting Conservative party members daring to vote no. It is proof that without a check on its power, and without a firm belief in liberty that transcends the state, democracy will destroy freedom.

Unless they register with a "press register" (established by Royal Charter), anyone who makes publishes "news-related material" will be liable for "libel damages" with huge fines. Even if they register, they can still be liable if in the government's opinion they were not punished by their "regulator" sufficiently.
I don't really feel like copying all the links, so...

#2  It is proof that without a check on its power, and without a firm belief in liberty that transcends the state, democracy will destroy freedom.

As amply shown on this side of the Atlantic, Freedom of the Press means nothing either when the 'professionals' are simply card carrying agents of the Ministry of Truth for the Inner Party. When they obstruct, bury or even fabricate information, they do not serve the purpose of the 'freedom'.

Don't confuse 'Press' as an institution with the instrument of technology. The real concept is Free Flow of Information. The internet is the technological evolution and manifestation of the original intent. The ruling caste objects to individuals having access to that as much as they object to them having access to guns.

India-Pakistan
Clash over mosque averted
[Dawn] On Thursday night, a clash between two groups over yet another mosque in the capital averted.

This time around, the location was the rural area of Malpur.

A standoff developed between two rival groups of the area, one of which occupied a local mosque. In reaction, the other group surrounded the building.

Malpur's Kiani group, which is linked to the administration of Lal Masjid, 'raided' the local Masjid Quba, breaking a police seal that had been put on the building several months ago at the request of the capital administration.

"There were dozens of people from the Kiani group inside the mosque," a police officer told Dawn.

"They occupied the building in retaliation to their rivals, Sheikh, which are backed by a religio-political group, had surrounded the mosque. Both groups were armed with weapons, batons, and sticks," the officer said.

Masjid Quba was built over ten years ago. The property, over one hectare, belongs to the government, but both the Kianis and the Sheikhs, settled there since long, have "had their eye on it" as a location for a seminary.

Struggles for control over the property have a long history, and supporters of both Lal Masjid and the Sunni Tehrik
...formed in Karachi in 1992 under by Muhammad Saleem Qadri. It quickly fell to trading fisticuffs and assassinations with the MQM and the Sipah-e-Sahaba, with at least a half dozen of its major leaders rubbed out. Sunni Tehreek arose to become the primary opposition to the Deobandi Binori Mosque, headed by Nizamuddin Shamzai, who was eventually bumped off by person or persons unknown. ST's current leadership has heavily criticized the Deobandi Jihadi leaders, accusing them of being sponsored by Indian Intelligence agencies as well as involvement in terrorist activities...
have at times been involved.

The police officer told Dawn that a man named Afsaryab Kiani, who said he had built the mosque, 'handed it over' to Lal Masjid administration. After the Lal Masjid operation in Islamabad, the Kiani group abandoned the mosque, and the Sheikhs took over its administration. Three months ago, however, the Kiani group raided the mosque and the two groups came across and a 'brawl' ensued, which threatened local law and order, forcing Islamabad administration to seal the building.

On Thursday, local villagers notified the police about the latest outbreak of rivalry at the mosque, and a large contingent of coppers, along with members of the anti-terrorism squad and anti-riot gear, reached the scene in time to prevent a major conflict.

An Islamabad official said that 'negotiations were carried out' with both the groups, convincing the Sheikhs to break their cordon and the Kianis to vacate the property.

Members of both were threatened with criminal charges for breaking the seal of the building and for creating a public nuisance and a report was registered with the Secretariat cop shoppe.

The mosque has been sealed again, and armed coppers have been deployed to 'prevent such attacks from occurring in the future', the officer said.

The rivalry continues, however; local villagers, many of whom are supporters of the Sheikh group, later blockaded Murree Road for several hours, protesting the Kiani's 'illegal occupation' of the mosque.

Myanmar Imposes Emergency Rule as Death Toll Hits 20
[An Nahar] Myanmar declared a state of emergency Friday for a riot-hit town where 20 people have been killed in Buddhist-Mohammedan violence that has sparked fears of spreading unrest.

Swathes of Meiktila, located 130 kilometers (80 miles) north of the capital Naypyidaw
...generally translated as royal capital, seat of the king or abode of kings because the current general in charge has a massive ego. It was founded in 2002 because Rangoon was worn out. Traditionally, Naypyidaw was used as a suffix to the names of royal capitals, such as Mandalay, which was called Yadanabon Naypyidaw in Burmese...
, have been reduced to ashes as the authorities struggle to establish control after three days of festivities and arson.

"At least 20 people have been killed. We estimate that it could be higher but it is also difficult for us to gather all the figures," a police officer who did not want to be named told Agence La Belle France Presse.

The president's office said the state of emergency would enable the military to help restore order.
Oh, good job! They managed to end a state of emergency that ran from 1962 to a few weeks ago. Now they get another one.
The situation was extremely tense on Friday with groups of men -- including Buddhist monks -- armed with knives and sticks prowling the streets. Many of the town's Mohammedan residents have fled their homes.

#1  So, given the long memories and the long pent up resentments, is this some kind of payback for Tameralain, Soupy Sales, or the partition of India in 1948?

I am sure the Moslems could find some long lost slight or insult to complain about.

I am still surprised at our Buddhist friends, perhaps they have turned the other cheek enough.

I guess the Moslems will learn that the payback for Jihad is a bitch.
