I think it's time the Lazy B shuttered that place. This time its drugs, several years ago, workers were sabotaging the H47s being built there. Something rotten is going on.
[Techdirt] The Righthaven saga continues. Just as it's lost in Colorado, and was told it needs to pay legal fees there as well, the company is still trying to get out of having to pay legal fees in the Hoehn case in Nevada.
As you may recall, Righthaven was ordered to pay legal fees of $34,045.50 by September 14th. It did not do so.
Following that, Hoehn's lawyer, Marc Randazza (whose name you're seeing a lot in these Righthaven cases), asked the court to declare Righthaven in contempt, and sought both to put the company into receivership and to allow US Marshals to seize property from Righthaven for its failure to pay.
In typical plodding fashion, Righthaven has still not paid up... but has filed a motion asking the appeals court to put off the district court's judgment, because it believes the ruling will be overturned (ha!) and having to pay up would cause irreparable harm.
The motion is worth reading. As with previous Righthaven motions we've seen, the company seems to think that mocking the district court judge is a reasonable strategy. You can feel the contempt for the judge in the filing, which I can't imagine will go over well.

For the money righthaven bilked the taxpayers out of while filing such frivolous lawsuits, they must pay and dearly. It's a wonder that they and Stevens Media are not held under RICO statutes.
[Bangla Daily Star] A group of 15 Nepalese villagers, including a 14-year-old child, have been incarcerated for eating a leopard in the belief that the meat could guard against gout disease, an official said yesterday.
The group said they found the dead spotted leopard by a temple near their village, 90 minutes' walk from the nearest road in the Mahabharat mountains in western Nepal, forestry officer Hari Paudel told AFP.
"They were charged with eating the meat of an endangered animal. The law requires them to inform the district forest office when they find a dead or injured animal," he said.
"One of the villagers had gout and he believed that he would be cured by eating the meat. The other villagers thought it would work as a preventative measure."
Gout, a painful joint disease, is a form of arthritis caused when acid builds up in blood and causes inflammation.
"We ate meat of the dead leopard we found near the village believing that it is a cure-all drug. We were totally unaware of its legal aspects," one of the accused was quoted as saying by the Kathmandu Post.

[An Nahar] Saudi King Abdullah has revoked a sentence of 10 lashes imposed on a woman for breaking the ban on women driving in the conservative kingdom, a Saudi princess said Wednesday on her Twitter account.
"Thank God, the lashing of Sheima is cancelled. Thanks to our beloved King. I'm sure all Saudi women will be so happy, I know I am," said Princess Amira al-Taweel, wife of billionaire Saudi Prince Alwaleed bin Talal.
"In tough times we stand together; in good times we celebrate together," the princess said. "I'm proud to be Saudi. To all Active Saudi women thank you for your efforts."
Sheima Jastaniah was sentenced on Monday by a court in the Red Sea city of Jeddah, where she was caught driving in July, a rights activist said.
"We were shocked yesterday (Monday) that she was sentenced to 10 lashes," the activist said, adding Jastaniah would appeal the verdict.
The sentence came a day after the king announced women would be allowed to vote and to run in municipal polls, and to join the all-appointed Shura (consultative) Council, a first in a country that imposes many restrictions on women.
Amnesty International condemned the sentence, saying it demonstrated the "scale of discrimination against women in the kingdom."
"Flogging is a cruel punishment in all circumstances but it beggars belief that the authorities in Saudi Arabia have imposed lashes on a woman apparently for merely driving a car," said Amnesty's Philip Luther.

Truckers in the "fast" lane going uphill are the worst offenders. I5 should have been expanded years ago between Grapevine and Tracy. I avoid 5 altogether these days. People on the on-ramp who refuse to match speed with the prevailing traffic and immediately merge in piss me off - i am usually right behind them and unable to merge into the instant traffic jam which forms behind their 25MPH slower moving vehicle.
[Bangla Daily Star] Unidentified criminals killed a Jubo League ... the youth wing of the Bangla Awami League... activist and injured eight others when they attacked him at his Beldia village home in Gafargaon upazila early yesterday.
The dead is Ilias Hossain, 32, a member of Jubo League Gafargaon unit.
Police said a gang of at least seven criminals stormed into Ilias's house around 1:00am and attacked him.
As his family members tried to resist, the assailants attacked them with sharp knives and fired bullets leaving eight people injured.
The gang took away gold jewellery and Tk 3 lakh before leaving the house.
Police reached the spot around 10:00am and recovered the body of Ilias.
Five of the injured -- Shahidullah, 35, Ali Hossain, 30, Makbul Hossain, 35, Ahsan Ullah, 25, and Nazim Uddin, 40, -- were admitted to Gafargaon Upazila Health Complex.
Saddam Hossain, younger brother of the dear departed, said his brother had political enmity with some locals. He, however, did not mention any name.
A gang of robbers beat Ilias mercilessly two years ago. Police incarcerated the robbers who are now out on bail, added Saddam.
Ilias worked as a personal security assistant to politician Giasuddin Ahmed for about three months after the last general election.

"He was in fairly serious overall condition," a source told the Miami-based Spanish-language daily. "When he arrived, he was in quite serious shape and that is why he was brought in for emergency care."
Venezuela's Information Minister Andres Izarra appeared to deny the report in a posting on the micro-blogging website Twitter.
"Those who should be admitted are the journalists of the Nuevo Herald, except into a madhouse (instead of a hospital)," Izarra tweeted, without providing further details.
On Sunday, Chavez sought to assure Venezuelans he was healthy, telling them that cancer-fighting chemotherapy treatment has not left him with any debilitating side effects.

I have noticed his bloating for some time now. When he was on the balcony with his aid the last time. Should he go on dialysis he will be severely impaired. Most likely more stomach bloating. Then I'd bet diabetic either now or will be. Even for normally active people dialysis is a terrible drain on energy levels. He will still run for office if he is alive. Even from a wheelchair. I still believe he is a poor patient. Determined to eat or drink what he wants. Time to call in the shaman if they are brave enough.

Just as bad as kidney failure, he may have aplastic anemia, which means his bone marrow is no longer producing, or not producing enough of the three blood cell types: red blood cells, white blood cells, and platelets. Untreated aplastic anemia is an illness that leads to rapid death, typically within six months.
If it is a more serious form, treatment would involve a bone marrow transplant, after strongly inhibiting the immune system. Probably not something to do if you have bad kidneys.

A Greek government front man said the country would escape default.

Someone needs to create a Garofalo bot. Any phrase you type in gets the word "racist" sprinkled throughout. It would completely replace the real Garofalo while being far less noisome.

[Dawn] Continued to be irked by prolonged loadshedding, people in the thriving provincial capital`s various areas have demanded smooth electric supply.
A resident of Hashtnagri complained of the continued power suspension to his area for three to four hours many times in a day.
He told Dawn that most power outages by Beautiful Downtown Peshawar Electric Supply Company were unscheduled. He said that complaints to Pesco often fell on deaf ears. Yeah, funny how all the deaf guys at PESCO end up in Customer Service, ain't it?
Kashif Khan, of Gulberg, said that loadshedding for long hours in a day was common. He said that Pesco supplied electricity for one and a half hour and then suspended it for the next four hours daily.
He added that frequent power cuts had forced people into purchasing diesel-run generators but that, too, was little help in light of prolonged scheduled power outages.
Abdul Qadir Khan, of Badhber, also criticised Pesco over suspension of electric supply in the area for 18 hours daily. He said people had bought generators to run tube wells for water. He blamed his misery on non-payment of electricity bills by the people of tribal areas.
"They don`t pay bills and we suffer from their practice," he said. ...lousy hicks!
There are also complaints of water shortage in the city due to prolonged scheduled power outages. A Gulabad resident said suspension of electric supply left tube wells out of action.
He said scheduled power outages had affected children the most under the current humid conditions.
When contacted, a front man for Pesco said low power production had led to prolonged scheduled power outages. He said power outages were carried out by Regional Control Centre, Islamabad.
The front man urged people to optimise use of electricity, especially during 6pm and 11pm, to help power companies overcome the current energy crisis.
He also said industrial consumers could save at least 25 per cent energy they used through better management.
He urged commercial power consumers to shut down businesses before 8pm and avoid decorative lights.
The front man recommended use of energy savers and tube lights instead of bulbs and said people should iron clothes during the daytime to save energy.

RICHMOND (KCBS) -- A solar power project that involved clear-cutting groves of eucalyptus and oak trees to install solar panels has been halted near Richmond after county supervisors said they were embarrassed caught off guard on the tree removal. Not mentioned in the article : It was a green building project
The Contra Costa County Board of Dolts Supervisors said it never signed off on a plan to remove the trees at Pt. Pinole Regional Shoreline Park to install solar panels for the county. By some estimates, nearly 100 eucalyptus trees and one dozen oak trees were chopped down. But they block the sun!
"To say that we're flabbergasted is to say something kind of pissed off mild," said Beverly Lane, president of the East Bay Regional Park District Board. Crap we look stupid..
She maintained the district had nothing to do with extensive tree removal. Nope...not us...move along...nothing to see here..
Instead, the county signed a contract with Main Street Power to have solar panels installed on top of county buildings including the West County Detention Facility near the park. SolarMan - the green crime fighter
"Had we known that these solar panels were going to be on the ground, near the entrance to a regional park, we would have definitely said no," said County Supervisor John Gioia.
He said the work has been halted at Pt. Pinole Regional Park. So not only will they not put the panels where they just clear cut but taxpayers will foot the bill to plant new trees...also not mentioned in the article
Jonathon Postal, a spokesman for Colorado-based solar company, said that company officials plan to meet with county officials this week to bitch-slap them for screwing the pooch discuss the project.

Something else may be going on here. Eucalyptus trees are not native to North America, and in fact are considered an invasive species, replacing native oaks, mostly. More importantly, they are a safety hazard when found in numbers, because they are extremely flammable -- or inflammable, I always confuse the two -- as California has found to its cost.
Since ignorant tree-buggers, as opposed to knowledgeable ones, scream bloody murder any time there is an attempt to remove such species -- as California has found to its cost -- it may be that the Park Board decided to quietly take advantage of an opportunity. I can't speak to the oaks with this little information, but there are plenty of reasons to cut down badly damaged or diseased trees as a matter of good forest management.
There's an awful lot of missing information in this article. I suspect a journalist willing to play to an agenda and no idea of what questions to ask beyond the usual.

I know people who think eucalyptus trees are weeds. They are native to Australia, not California.
I've heard people in Hawaii curse them bitterly. All I could tell them is they make good firewood. I'm sure they're not as nice as koa or sandal wood.
We're not so picky about non-native species in California. We can and do grow just about anything. I like eucalyptus myself. But there doesn't seem to be any shortage of them so I wouldn't worry about cutting them down the way I would an oak.

Ebbing Uluque6305, y'all wouldn't have anything like your current problem with wildfires if there weren't so many eucalyptus trees...for the same reasons that you like it as firewood. As you point out, are plenty of non-native species that are both beneficial and well-behaved. :-)

Since all this is going on in the S.F. Bay area, would it be safe to assume the political affiliations of the various officials is NOT GOP-centric?
