Queensland coast expects 'most severe' cyclone on record
Cyclone Yasi, category 5, will hit Queensland between Cairns and Townsville real soon now. Supposed to be bigger than Katrina was for New Orleans.

All our favorite Aussies on the Burg, stay safe!

#2  Based on observations in the past hour it looks like it will be 'only' a category 4 when it hits.

However, it is (as noted above) so big that the cone of 140 mph wind could be 130 miles wide.

#4  Thanks Paul, If I can get out of this ice storm it should be a normal trip. I won't be going North of Sydney, that's for sure.
It's hard to tell how bad it will be - the media is as usual, hysterical, but it does look really, really grim.
The Australian newspaper has a link to a guy in Cairns who is staying and Tweeting throughout, if anyone wants a personal view.

#1  I will take an American made good over a cheap foreign piece of crap any day. It is all about the quality control.

Case in point:

Was looking at leasing a new car and was choosing between the Ford Focus and the Honda Civic.

Ford Focus - 30% domestic parts and made in Mexico
Felt cheap and poorly made and handled like shit.

Honda Civic - 70% domestic parts and made in a Tennessee plant.
Handled well, felt solid and had 0 problems with it after we leased it.

I buy American made. American owned.... not so much.

#2  So we can still make tractors, helicopters and airplanes...for now...until the Chinese catch up with us in computers and robotics, which they will. It still rubs me the wrong way when I try to buy a shirt or a pair of shoes, even in high end department stores, and can't find one damn thing that isn't Made in China. A guy I know works for a company that recently outsourced over half of their IT jobs to India. What does that tell a young college student who is considering a major in computer science? And how are we going to keep up with countries like India and China if our young people are afraid to study computers?

But it doesn't surprise me that MSNBC is trying to paint a rosy picture for us. Don't worry. Be happy!

Turks don't need condoms, Universiade organizers say

Authorities removed condoms from Turkish athletes' rooms at the Winter Universiade Games Village on the grounds that they do "not belong to Turkish culture," daily Habertürk reported Tuesday.
"Tut tut! What would we need rubbers for?"
The daily said that condoms, which were left in the athletes' rooms in the Games Village at the 2011 Winter University Games in the eastern province of Erzurum, were taken from Turks' rooms.

Kemal Tamer, the head of the University Sports Federation, said the authorities were aware of the collection.

"That does not belong to our culture," said Tamer. "That means, in a way, to encourage illicit intercourse. That is why we collected the condoms from our kids' rooms."

Meanwhile in the Games, Russia continues to dominate the competitions, leading the medals table as of Monday night.

Russia has won seven gold medals in addition to four silver and three bronze medals at the Games, followed by South Korea (five gold, three silver, three bronze) and China (two gold, two silver, two bronze) respectively. The Czech Republic, Slovenia and Slovakia are three other nations with two gold medals, while Germany, Japan, Italy, France, Kazakhstan, Switzerland and the United States all have one gold medal each.

Turkey's poor results also continued at the tournament, with the men and women's ice hockey teams being on the wrong end of humiliating routs.
Sounds like they're not getting enough sex...
Women's team suffered an agonizing 32-0 against Finland, while men's side was beaten 26-0 by Russia on Monday.
Had they spent the previous night humping they'd have tromped 'em...
The men's team suffered 16-0 and 18-0 routs at the hands of the Czech Republic and Japan in previous games.
The Canadian women's swim team asked if they wanted to skinny dipping, but the Turkish men's team said they hadda stay in and read their Korans.
The women's national team lost 10-0 to Great Britain and 15-0 to the United States and 20-0 to Slovakia previously.
They got skunked, in other words. Oh, if they'd only put all those rubbers to use!
Turkish women's curling team lost 12-4 to Japan on Tuesday, a day after losing 8-7 to Germany.
Since they weren't skunked they'll probably have mandatory virginity checks when the games are over.

Home Front: Politix
Senators vow to strip Obama climate power
Conservative senators vowed Monday to strip President Barack Obama of his power to regulate greenhouse gases, in a move that would cripple US efforts on climate change if successful.
Just think how much money could be saved by eliminating the EPA and replacing it with two underpaid clerks in the basement of the Department of Commerce...
Eleven Republican senators introduced a bill that would stop the Environmental Protection Agency from regulating greenhouse gases, which scientists blame for global warming, without explicit approval by Congress.

Under Obama, the federal agency has steadily increased standards on gas emissions. The Republicans accused Obama of circumventing Congress, where a so-called "cap-and-trade" bill to mandate emission curbs died last year.

"My bill will shrink Washington's job-crushing agenda and grow America's economy," said Senator John Barrasso, a Republican from Wyoming and skeptic of climate change who is leading the effort.

"I will do whatever it takes to ensure that Washington doesn't impose cap-and-trade policies in any form."

The Obama administration counters that a shift to green energy would help both the planet and the economy by creating a new source of high-paying jobs.
First, get the economy running.
Then, improve it.

Only the prosperous countries can afford environmental protection. The poor ones are trying to figure out how to stay alive.

#1  It is a start.
The other place for improvements is the other bill that makes it necessary to put czars through a senate approval committee like cabinet members. Oh, and in that bill they will severely rein in the czar spending and powers as well. I would prefer czars to be illegal, but I'll take this for now.
Posted by: DarthVader || 02/02/2011 15:34 Comments || Top||

#2  I'd like to see a bill to rein in the Federal spending--something like we have in our State; a balanced budget law. We can't spend more than we take in. I'd also like to see a national right-to-work law; a law that would rein in the public unions. Their power is way out of proportion to their numbers; they usurp the power of the voters and undermine the democratic process.
Posted by: JohnQC || 02/02/2011 16:56 Comments || Top||

#3  As far as that goes - how about a ban on any and all political activity by any union representing public employees.

That includes contributions, in-kind contributions (phone banks, get out the vote drives, etc....), even loaning office space. ANY political activity.

Their members already have a say in the political process just like the rest of us.

Allen West holds lively town hall meeting
A very supportive crowd of 400 or more greeted Rep. Allen West at his first public town hall meeting with Palm Beach County constituents, but he did face some tough questions.

When West opened the floor for questions, he said he wanted to hear first from people who didn't vote for him.

The first questioner brought up an incident in which West, then a U.S. Army lieutenant colonel serving in Iraq, fired a pistol near an Iraqi detainee to get him to divulge information about a suspected ambush. When the questioner mentioned "torture", the rest of her question was drowned out by boos and groans.

"Having been a commander in combat, if you were one of my soldiers, I would have done the exact same action to protect you," responded West.

West was also confronted by Nezar Hamze, executive director of the South Florida chapter of CAIR.

"You have consistently demonized and insulted my religion. ... You've insulted the prophet," Hamze said.

"I will always defend your right to practice a true religion under the First Amendment," West replied. But, he added, "I'm not going to stop speaking the truth," and he mentioned violent incidents from Islamic history.

"Your version of Islam is exactly what the anti-Islam people are teaching you," said Hamze, who said acts of violence "have nothing to do with Islam."

After the meeting, Hamze gave West some credit.

"It's good that he's opening the floor," Hamze said. "He's not afraid to take any questions."

The Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee has recently launched radio ads and automated phone calls aimed at West and 18 other House Republicans around the U.S. who have been targeted for defeat in 2012.

"I couldn't even have this job for 30 days and they're already running attack ads on me," West told the crowd. He added: "Never pick a fight with a guy that knows how to fight."

Which is why I started building up my political donations fund again the day after the election.

Save a little bit every paycheck, and by 2012 I'll have some serious change to help take back more of our country.

#3  "I pity the fool" who runs against Allen West. I have a feeling that the Colonel will have that seat as long as he wants it and has his health. However, I don't think he should stop at that seat.

Sen Bill Nelson (D-FL) is coming up for an election in 2012, but already Republicans are lining up several deep to challenge him.

#4  First Information Report

A First Information Report or FIR is a written document prepared by the police in India, Pakistan and Japan when they receive information about the commission of a cognizable offence. It is a report of information that reaches the police first in point of time and that is why it is called the First Information Report. It is generally a complaint lodged with the police by the victim of a cognizable offense or by someone on his/her behalf. Anyone can report the commission of a cognizable offence either orally or in writing to the police.
