30 hurt in Sunamganj village clash
[Bangla Daily Star] At least 30 people were injured, four with bullet wounds, in a clash between two groups of villagers in the Jagannathpur upazila of Sunamganj yesterday.
Just take a right at Albuquerque.
Police and local sources said around 11:00am yesterday Nurul Haque, of Betauka village of Jagannathpur, had a heated exchange of words with Alais Miah of the same village over money that Alais had borrowed from Nurul.
Punctuated with firearms.
At one stage, relatives and some villagers joined in an hour-long clash armed with lethal weapons and firearms, said police and locals.
Sticks and stones and firearms
Of the injured, eight in critical condition had been admitted to the Sylhet MAG Osmani Medical College Hospital. The rest were taken to the Upazila Health Complex, said police sources.

Man held for throwing acid on housewife
[Bangla Daily Star] Police arrested a man yesterday morning on charge of throwing acid on a housewife over land disputes at Hatisura village in Terokhada upazila Thursday night.
Just couldn't face her hubby...
The arrestee was identified as Ektadul Molla, 20, son of Nuru Molla of the village.

Ektadul entered the house of his neighbour Feroza Parvin Ranjila, 40, wife of Hasmat Sheikh, when she was offering Tarabi prayer on Thursday midnight, police said.
Sounds like he was after a little more than a recording.
He then demanded a cassette, in which conversations of the conflicting parties were recorded during the feud over land, to the housewife.

On refusal, Ektadul threw acid on her leaving her seriously injured.

Locals rushed her to upazila health complex soon after the incident.

She was later shifted to Khulna Medical College Hospital yesterday morning.

#1  On refusal, Ektadul threw acid on her leaving her seriously injured.

Did he just happen to have a flask of the stuff in his pocket?

Locals rushed her to upazila health complex soon after the incident.

Do these clowns know that if they flushed her with water she'd probably be just fine? Am I missing something? Seems like they are taking her halfway across the city on a donkey just to have the hospital put her in the shower.

Outlaw held after gunfight with police
[Bangla Daily Star] Police arrested an alleged outlaw after half an hour of gunfight with his gang at Santhia upazila of the district yesterday.

A rifle, a shutter gun, seven rounds of bullets, 11 powerful bombs, and three machetes were recovered from the spot.

The arrestee, Md Rashed Pramanik, 30, is son of Jitu Pramanik of Bilshalangi village under the upazila. Rashed is a diehard operative and a faction leader of outlawed Purbo Banglar Communist Party (PBCP-Jana Judhha), police said.

Rashed underwent treatment at Pabna General Hospital as he was hit by a bullet during the gunfight.

Sub-Inspector Hassan Jahid of Ataikula police station said they raided Alodiar, a remote village of Santhia upazila, when the gang was holding a secret meeting about money they had looted from the village.

The outlaws opened fire on police leading to a 30-minute gunfight as the security force reached the spot.

Other members of the gang managed to flee abandoning the arms and ammunition they were carrying.

I am still a revolutionary, Castro says
[Iran Press TV Latest] Former Cuban leader Fidel Castro has celebrated his 84th birthday in style, saying he will remain faithful to his ideas about revolution. "I have not changed," Castro wrote in an article published in state-run media on Friday, AFP reported.

The former Cuban president stated that he still believes in the cause of revolution, which brought him to power over 50 years ago. "I will be faithful to the principles and ethics that I have practiced since I became a revolutionary," he said in the celebration ceremony in the Cuban capital Havana.

Castro is expected to release his memoirs in August 2010.

The book, which includes stories from his childhood, chronicles his victory over pro-US dictator Fulgencio Batista in 1959.

After his 2006 illness, Castro disappeared from public view and was seen only occasionally in photographs and videos, and formally handed over the presidency of Cuba to his younger brother, Raul Castro, in 2008.

However, Fidel Castro is still the First Secretary of the ruling Communist Party of Cuba. The second secretary of the party is Raul Castro.

#1  How is it that the "revolution" that Castro has headed for over 50 years is still not complete, even in Cuba? I would think that after this long, the revolution would be over - either won or lost, but over.

China-Japan-Koreas
China examines infants' bosoms
[Bangla Daily Star] China's government is investigating reports that a brand of powdered milk caused infant girls to grow breasts.

It is being alleged that hormone-tainted milk from Synutra International caused several cases of premature puberty in Hubei province.

The Chinese firm, whose shares fell by up to 35% on the news, strongly denies its products were tainted.

Food safety problems involving milk powder and other products have alarmed Chinese consumers in recent years.

Two years ago, the chemical compound melamine was found in milk products made by 22 Chinese firms. Hundreds of thousands of children were poisoned and six died.

A panel of nine experts on endocrine, paediatric and food safety issues had been assembled to investigate the tainted milk allegations, the health ministry announced on Thursday.

The ministry was "directly investigating the claimed premature puberty cases at the request of Hubei province" and would publish its conclusions "soon", it said.

Samples taken from the market where the milk powder was purchased, as well as from the homes of the infant girls, were already being tested, it added.

China Daily, the country's leading state-owned English-language newspaper, reported the cases in Hubei this week, quoting from a report by the Beijing-based Health Times newspaper.

At least three infants in Hubei were found to have abnormal levels of the hormones estradiol and prolactin, which stimulates the production of breast milk, Health Times reported.

The infants' parents feared that their conditions were linked to their milk powder, produced by Synutra, and a leading children's doctor in the region was quoted by Health Times as calling for the powder to be analysed.

On Tuesday, the father of a 13-month-old girl in Beijing told China Daily his daughter had been diagnosed with symptoms of premature puberty.

Wang Gang was quoted by the paper as saying he was "furious at Synutra".

'Unwavering product quality'

The chairman of Synutra, Liang Zhang, has said that there is "no scientific evidence" to support the allegation that Synutra products were responsible for the cases.

"While we offer our sympathy to any families experiencing health challenges, we firmly believe that our products are not involved in the claims recently made, and we feel this media event will pass," he said in a statement.

"We firmly believe they will illustrate our unwavering product quality and commitment to consumer safety."

A food safety expert for the World Health Organization, Dr Peter Ben Embarek, said China's test results were expected within days and that the agency would then examine them.

"At first look, it looks very surprising," he told the Associated Press, adding that this was the first time he had ever heard of such a case.

Economy
German economy soars at fastest pace in 2 decades
[Dawn] Germany's economy surged ahead in the second quarter, growing 2.2 per cent -- the fastest pace since reunification two decades ago and beating market forecasts -- as a global recovery fed demand for its exports.

The first-quarter growth figure for Europe's biggest economy also was revised upward Friday to 0.5 per cent -- more than double the initial reading of 0.2 per cent.

''The recovery of the German economy, which lost momentum at the turn of 2009/2010, is really back on track,'' the Federal Statistical Office said as it released the preliminary second-quarter figures.

Economists had expected second-quarter growth of less than 2 per cent. In year-on-year terms, output rose by 3.7 per cent.

While foreign trade was one of the key drivers of growth, household and government consumption also contributed to the rise in gross domestic product, the statistical office said.

An improving global economy has fed demand for German exports, while industrial orders and business confidence have been rising.

The economy shrank by a painful 4.9 per cent last year -- easily the worst performance since World War II.

The government still has an official forecast for this year of 1.4 per cent growth, but Economy Minister Rainer Bruederle said Friday that expansion of ''well over 2 percent'' is now possible.

''One cannot speak of an economic miracle, but we are experiencing an XL upswing at the moment,'' Bruederle said.

Carsten Brzeski, an economist at ING in Brussels, said the economy benefited from ''a catching up in the construction sector after the harsh winter and strong foreign demand for German goods.''

He cautioned that ''German growth will return to more ordinary growth numbers'' looking forward. ''Nevertheless, despite an inevitable slowdown, all ingredients are there for the German economy to take the next step toward a self-sustained recovery.''

Second-quarter gross domestic product figures for the full 16-nation eurozone were due later Friday.

#2  Interesting. The jump in the US trade deficit a couple of days ago, largely due to a fall in exports pointed to a slowing world economy. This points in the opposite direction, or maybe Germany is doing the right things while the US isn't.

#5  Germany is the world's largest exporter.

Germany
$ 1,121,000,000,000
2009 est.
United States
$ 994,700,000,000
2009 est.

The main difference is that German companies produce relatively little overseas, and most of what they do make outside Germany is in eastern Europe.

Germany companies haven't exported their knowhow and hence German jobs. Which is the aspect of globalization nobody wants to talk about.

India-Pakistan
India Deploys Su-30s Near China
The Indian Air Force has deployed a full squadron of Russian-made Sukhoi Su-30MKI multirole aircraft to an air base near the Chinese border. The Su-30s are at the Air Force base in Tezpur in the eastern state of Assam.
Russians sure do make 'em pretty ...
Another air base near the border, Chabua, is being upgraded to house Sukhois, transport aircraft and eventually the Medium Multirole Combat Aircraft (MMRCA), a senior Indian Air Force official said.

The moves are part of the effort to strengthen India's defenses against China.

The MMRCA will fly in the Indian northeast near the Chinese border and northwest, near Pakistan, the official said.

In June, the government approved a deal worth more than $3.3 billion to buy 42 more Su-30s, bringing the planned total to 272 by 2018. The Su-30 will be the most numerous fighter in the Indian fleet.

The official said a nuclear-armed Su-30MKI could fly deep inside China with midair refueling.

Jacobabad Evacuated
As raging river waters caused more devastation in the country on Friday, over 80 percent of the 300,000 people of Jacobabad city were evacuated ahead of expected flooding over the next 24 hours. The water was only one kilometre away from the nearby Shahbaz Airbase.

Floodwater is rushing towards the city after Tori Band (embankment) was breached. According to Jacobabad District Coordination Officer (DCO) Kazim Jatoi, the floodwater had entered Noorwah Canal, which would not be able to withstand the pressure for more than three hours.

"Water, if it enters the city, will first of all affect the nearby Shahbaz Air Base," Jatoi warned.

Dozens of villages were inundated near Sultan Kot in Shikarpur district due to breaches in the Begari and Sindh canals.

Hundreds of villagers are waiting to be rescued in the area. Pakistan Army personnel were able to reach only one of the affected villages, Deen Muhammad Jafferi. They evacuated the people through a boat. Authorities in Sindh said that 45 people drowned in the Indus River on Friday.

Looters exploit flood misery
Armed bandits are exacerbating the misery of Pakistan's massive floods, stealing cattle and food from survivors fleeing the country's worst humanitarian crisis, witnesses said on Friday.

UN officials have warned that the extent of the losses to the infrastructure and economy will put the country back years.

The US has increased its aid to $76 million and said that Senator John Kerry would visit the country next week to raise public awareness and drum up donations for the ally.

President Asif Ali Zardari, who Thursday visited flood victims for the first time, has cut back a scheduled visit to Russia next week to less than a day because of the crisis, his office announced.

Political pressure has been building on the unpopular president from the powerful opposition and the general public after he failed to cut short a visit to Europe last week in order to deal personally with the crisis.

But in the village of Karampur outside the city of Sukkur, local residents waded through stagnant floodwaters up to their chest, retrieving valuables and lashing out at the government for failing to protect them from looters.

Some villagers said that they preferred to guard their flooded homes while sending their wives and children to safety. Others said they had been looted while trying to flee during chaotic scenes.

"There was nobody to rescue us from the floods and now there's nobody to save us from bandits. We were waiting for help when armed men came and seized our belongings at gunpoint," said Abdul Karim, 20.

#1  What the media isn't telling you is that much of the flooding is hundreds of miles downstream from where the rains fell and a competent authority would have known several days in advance, but this is Pakistan where inshallah rules.

Government mulls disaster duty on imported goods
The government is considering imposing a one-time "flood disaster import duty" on the import of majority of the products, mainly nonessential items, official sources said on Friday.

According to the proposal under consideration by the economic managers of the country, food items and import of oil and POL products will remain exempted from the flood disaster import duty, the sources said.

Rs 25 billion to 50 billion in revenue is estimated with the imposition of 1 percent of flood disaster import duty on the imports and in case its rate is increased, the revenue outcome would also increase accordingly, they said. The revenue impact of the flood disaster import duty on the import is being worked out, they said, adding however that the scope of the duty and rate of duty would actually determine the revenue realisation through this measures for the people affected by the floods.

The sources said the government had imposed flood relief surcharge in 1992 to arrange funds for the flood victims and similar arrangements were also being considered to generate funds for them.

Blocking channels' transmission criminal: CJ
[Dawn] Chief Justice Iftikhar Mohammad Chaudhry on Friday said that blocking the transmission of television channels was criminal.

"What are law enforcement officials doing?" he remarked.

Justice Iftikhar made these remarks during a hearing of a petition challenging restrictions against television channels.

"How does a cable operator decide whether to block a particular transmission?" he said.

"We must go to the core of the matter...why is the law not being implemented? How does the Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority (Pemra) regulate cable operators? Why has the Pemra not taken any serious action in this regard?" he said.

Moreover, the Supreme Court ordered Chairman Pemra and Secretary Information to ensure the transmission of the television channels by 12:30 on Friday.
