Clan leaders blamed for Mogadishu unrest
(SomaliNet) The mayor of Mogadishu Mohamed Omar Habeb ‘Mohamed Dhere’ on Wednesday accused Hawiye clan elders of being behind the bomb attacks in the city.

Mohamed Dhere told the local media that those so called Hawiye clan elders were responsible for the unrest in Mogadishu after long investigation made by his authority. “We came to know that the elders of Hawiye are the plotters of the bomb attacks on the government positions and its allies with the help of the Islamist remnants” said Mohamed Dhere.

He said the reason that the Hawiye elders are doing this is to put pressure on the government. “We will take tough steps against the elders that oppose the stability in the capital,”

But Ahmed Dirie Ali, the spokesman for the Hawiye elders dismissed the allegation from the mayor of Mogadishu as baseless. “It is outrageous that Mr. Dhere lays the blame on Hawiye. I am saying that we, as Hawiye leaders, do not encourage any group that disturbs the peace nor do we have familiarity on perpetrators,” he said.

The news comes as the mayor imposed a curfew on parts of the volatile city last night in an effort to be in grip control of the security. On Sunday a roadside bomb explosion was targeted on a convoy carrying Mogadishu’s Mayor Mohamed Dhere in north of the capital killing two civilians.

In a statement, Mohamed Dhere said the attacker was shot dead by his guards as he was on top of a tree near the site of blast. “We are still following the terrorists and we will crack them down, we know that the remnants of the ousted Islamic Courts are hiding in Bakara market,” said Mohamed Dhere.

Castro Says He's Better, Weight Stable
A statement signed by Fidel Castro sought to reassure the few remaining loyalists and cronies Cubans Wednesday that the 80-year-old leader was recovering well from difficult surgery, saying his weight was stable and he was eating lobster thermidor solid foods after months of intravenous feeding. In the most detailed assessment of Castro's health since shortly after he fell ill almost 10 months ago, the statement said: "It wasn't just one operation, but various. Initially it wasn't successful and that had a bearing on my prolonged recuperation."
So sounds like the story was right: a botched partial colectomy with leakage and infection that took a long time to resolve.
The message, sent by e-mail to foreign journalists and expected to be published in state propaganda newspapers Thursday, did not say when Castro might appear in public again or retake Cuba's presidency. It also said Castro was now taking all medicines orally.

"I tell everyone simply that I am getting better and maintain a stable weight of about 80 kilograms (176 pounds)," Wednesday's statement said, adding that the greatest risks to Castro now are age and the effects of not taking proper care of his health over the years. "No danger is greater than those related to age and health, which I abused in risky times," the statement said.

The statement said that for weeks after Castro stepped down, Cubans and foreigners spoke about a date he might appear reappear "with my olive-green uniform." Castro has been seen wearing a track suit in photographs and videos released in state media.

The comments on his health came in the second half of a statement about food production. There have been 11 written communiques signed by Castro in recent weeks, most of them lashing out at U.S.-backed plans to use food crops to produce biofuels.
Shouldn't bother Cuba: they're self-sufficient, aren't they?
There had been widespread expectation on the island that Castro would appear for delayed 80th birthday celebrations in his honor, including a major military parade, in early December, and then again on May 1 for the annual workers parade of hundreds of thousands of people who were given no choice. His dwindling number of loyalists were sorely disappointed both times.

U.S. checking all toothpaste imports from China
U.S. health officials are beginning to check all shipments of toothpaste coming from China, following reports of tainted products in other countries, a government spokesman said Wednesday.

The Food and Drug Administration has no evidence that contaminated toothpaste has made its way into the United States but is taking the step as a precaution, agency spokesman Doug Arbesfeld said.

China is the second-largest exporter of toothpaste to the United States behind Canada, according to the FDA.

#1  We don't need food imports from China. We can live with whatever consequences arise from banning them altogether.

When it comes to international trade, the Chinese care about one thing and one thing only...PROFIT. Whatever they have to do to wring out a few more bucks, whether it be additives, chemicals that make a product seem more nutrient rich, or whatever, they will do it without a moment's hesitation...legal or not. They simply don't value the sanctity of a human life like we do. If they kill a few hundred thousand with some tainted product (and they will eventually), it'll be "oh well, at least we made alot of money".

It's time to tell the truth about them, BAN their inferior and dangerous products, and oh by the way, until they stop using slave labor camps, child labor, and a host of other atrocious practices, lets remove MFN trade status as well.

#2  Word, gorb! China needs to be spanked hard. These same tainted goods are showing up at our borders two or three times after being rejected on the first attempt. This means that China's government is not confiscating them upon return to their shores or even penalizing the violaters.

Curiously enough, when inspectors went over to check on the factory that produced the melamine tainted wheat gluten that killed our pets, there was nothing left to inspect. The entire facility had been stripped out right down to the machine equipment's anchor bolts. I can only speculate as to what other sorts of violations they were attempting to conceal.

President Hu meets Party members in PLA
Chinese President Hu Jintao on Wednesday called for greater efforts to modernize the country's armed forces to ensure national security. Hu, who is also chairman of the Central Military Commission, made the remarks while meeting delegates to the Beijing Military Area Command's ninth congress of the Communist Party of China.

Hu said the Beijing Military Area Command is of vital strategic importance and it has accomplished the tasks assigned by the Party and the Chinese people in recent years. China's military development should be guided by Deng Xiaoping Theory and the "Three Represents", Hu said.

Hu said the People's Liberation Army should uphold the fundamental principle of absolute Party leadership over the armed forces, and further beef up military training. He urged the PLA to continue making contributions to the prosperity and harmony of the country and joining hands with local governments in maintaining social stability. Guo Boxiong and Xu Caihou, both vice chairmen of the Central Military Commission, were present during the meeting.

Docs Without Borders: French FM should stop mentioning us
Medecins Sans Frontieres has urged France's new foreign minister to stop overusing the name of the aid group he co-founded because donors were worried about its independence.
"Hold me, Jean-Michel! He's said our name again!"
Kouchner was quick to reiterate he would stay true to his beliefs, pointing to his roots with MSF (Doctors Without Borders), a Nobel Peace Prize-winning aid agency he helped found in 1971 and left in dispute over its direction few years later.

But Jean-Herve Bradol, head of the French section of MSF, said Kouchner's frequent referral to MSF was not helping the organisation's cause, adding some donors were confused over Kouchner's political message and the group's objectives. "We have received a lot of messages from donors who are worried about whether his acceptance of this post is in line with what MSF stands for," Bradol told Reuters in an interview. "Mr Kouchner actively maintains an ambiguity because in practically all his speeches, he refers to the history of MSF and his role in MSF ... We think there's a misuse of the brand."

MSF, which provides emergency medical assistance, largely finances its activities through private donations. Bradol said it was important for MSF to proclaim its independence and neutrality as a humanitarian organisation and not to become associated with Kouchner's policies.

John Edwards Stakes Claim on Pirate Booty
Ewww...that's a creepy headline.
The question of the day: Just how much of the $500 million sunken treasure found in the Atlantic last weekend belongs to Democratic presidential candidate John Edwards? I put a call in to Edwards' campaign yesterday morning to find out, but I haven't heard back yet. The reality? The populist one-term senator will get an undisclosed piece of the action from the sunken 17th-century galleon. The ship, laden with gold and silver, was found at the bottom of the Atlantic by a little-known exploration company, Florida-based Odyssey Marine Research.

Even less well known is who owns OMR. Biggest shareholder: New York-based Fortress Investments, a private equity and hedge fund manager. Senior adviser and major investor: John Edwards. Edwards' personal financial disclosures show he's an investor in the exclusive Drawbridge Global Macro Fund, which owns the 9.9% stake in OMR. Ten percent of $500 million. After costs, of course.
Yarrrr! 50 million fer me! Dere really be Two Americas, matey! Yarrr!
Fortress' stake is even bigger than at first appears. In a complex holding, it owns 3.1 million shares, plus millions more in preferred stock and warrants. Total economic interest is the equivalent of 6.98 million shares. Profits in the last week already come to $19 million.

OMR stock, which closed at $4.60 on Friday before news of the discovery, has since rocketed to $7.35. The value of Fortress' stake could be as much as $51 million.

Fortress isn't alone in cheering its good fortune. Greg Stemm is the 49-year-old exploration boss at OMR. He's the one with the nautical beard. He's made more than $5 million in a week. Stemm is sitting on nearly 2 million shares, plus around 200,000 options. Value today: $14.8 million. A treasure-hunter with stock options. Isn't Wall Street terrific?

Company CEO John Morris, who took time out a year ago for cancer treatment, holds another 1.74 million shares and options. Value today: $12.8 million. It should be even more.
OMR stock peaked Monday morning at just over $9, valuing the company at well above $400 million. The shares have come off sharply since. The main reason for the decline? Saber rattling by the Spanish government. Madrid says the treasure found by OMR might be "Spanish" and they might sue to get it "back."

Ahem. Memo to the Spaniards: Whom do you think you're kidding? Every single ounce of gold your country's galleons brought back from South America, all those centuries ago, was stolen from the natives. The conquistadores raped, murdered and plundered the continent for every scrap of precious metal they could find. If your pirates lost the gold and someone else found it, exactly how much moral claim do you think you have?
Wait'll the Muslims get it declared "3,908,786,789th Most Holy Place in Islam"...
If we're playing finders keepers, the treasure belongs to Stemm, Morris, Edwards and the other shareholders in OMR. If we aren't playing finders keepers, it belongs to the Incas and the Aztecs.

OMR might need a really good trial lawyer on its side. Lucky thing they know John Edwards.
Yarrr!! 'N I'll pick me teeth with their Spanish bones, matey! Yarrrr...

#3  A friend bought some of this stock the day the find was announced. I tried to warn against it, 'cos I know that Nothing makes folks crazier than pirate treasure. North American Union plan headed to Congress in fall
A powerful think tank chaired by former Sen. Sam Nunn and guided by trustees including Richard Armitage, Zbigniew Brzezinski, Harold Brown, William Cohen and Henry Kissinger, is in the final stages of preparing a report to the White House and U.S. Congress on the benefits of integrating the U.S., Mexico and Canada into one political, economic and security bloc.

The final report, published in English, Spanish and French, is scheduled for submission to all three governments by Sept. 30, according to the Center for Strategic & International Studies.

CSIS boasts of playing a large role in the passage of the North American Free Trade Agreement in 1994 – a treaty that set in motion a political movement many believe resembles the early stages of the European Community on its way to becoming the European Union.

#3  Isn't it amazing how these elites are determined to end the US as we have known it from day one. They are determined to have to no borders and no control of access to slave labor. They are determined to "roll" the commoners in a rush before anyone can respond. Great Moments in Congress #428
. . . Rep. [Sheila] Jackson Lee also caused a few observers to scratch their heads when she opened her questioning of [Monica] Goodling this way: “Allow me just to simply begin a series of questions, Ms. Goodling, and I would ask that they — your answers — be as cryptic and as brief as possible, however truthful, because we do have a shortened period of time.”

“Cryptic?” whispered one reporter. “Did she say cryptic? I think she did.”

Indeed she did. But Goodling did not follow Rep. Jackson Lee’s directions. In fact, her answers were quite clear and direct. . . .

India-Pakistan
Australia not to sell uranium to India
MELBOURNE — Australia will not sell uranium to India until it signs the nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty, Federal Resources Minister Ian Macfarlane has said. The minister’s remarks were in contrast to the recent hints from Prime Minister John Howard that Australia could shift its policy and allow yellowcake to be exported to India.

“The answer is no,” Macfarlane said adding “the Australian uranium industry can prosper without India, that's my answer. “We have a prohibition on the basis they have not signed the NPT,” he told The Age newspaper. As recently as March, Howard appeared to leave open the prospect of Australian uranium sales to India. Speaking during a visit by India's nuclear envoy Shyam Saran, the prime minister said: “We see India as a very responsible country. The relationship between Australia and India is growing. It's a very important relationship. They will be considerations that we will bear in mind.”

Asked about the steps the government is taking towards a framework for nuclear power in Australia, Macfarlane said companies, which he declined to name, have already approached him to discuss commercial opportunities to enrich uranium in Australia.

Nilofar unresigns
Federal Minister for Tourism Nilofar Bakhtiar has decided to withdraw her resignation after directives from Prime Minister Shaukat Aziz and Pakistan Muslim League (PML) President Chaudhry Shujaat Hussain and she will resume her duties at her office from today.

PML sources said that the party’s Central Executive Committee unanimously endorsed a resolution a couple of days ago rejecting Ms Bakhtiar’s resignation. The resolution, which was tabled by senior PML leader Kabir Ali Wasti and Foreign Minister Khurshid Mehmood Kasuri, demanded that the prime minister intervene in the matter, reject Ms Bakhtiar’s resignation and direct her to resume her duties. The sources also said that Hussain and PML Secretary General Mushahid Hussain Sayed held a separate meeting with Ms Bakhtiar and asked her to withdraw her resignation from the office of tourism minister. Ms Bakhtiar finally agreed to withdraw the resignation, the sources added. Ms Bakhtiar also met President Pervez Musharraf on Wednesday, who asked her to continue as tourism minister.

COLOMBO, Sri Lanka (AP) - Tamil rebels ambushed a navy camp in northern Sri Lanka and said they killed 35 sailors in the attack early Thursday, while a bomb blast near an army bus in the capital wounded four soldiers and a civilian, the government said. Tamil Tiger rebels attacked the navy base at Delft in a flotilla of 15 boats, and navy sailors sank one of them in attempts to repulse the ambush, navy spokesman Commander D. K. P Dassanayake said.

But the rebels swiftly overran the base and later found the bodies of 35 sailors, rebel spokesman Rasiah Ilanthirayan told The Associated Press by telephone. He said four insurgents also were killed in the assault. "The fighting lasted only 20 minutes and we completely overran the camp," Ilanthirayan said, adding that the insurgents returned to their own base soon after the raid.

The military did not immediately have details of the casualties in the violence, and the rebels' death toll could not be independently verified. The military and rebels routinely deny and contradict each other's casualty tolls.

Nobel laureate cancels U.K. trip over 'widespread anti-Israel, anti-Semitic current'
An American Nobel prize laureate has withdrawn from a speaking engagement at a London university, citing anti-Israel and anti-Semitic sentiment in the United Kingdom, a British newspaper reported Thursday. According to The Guardian, Professor Steven Weinberg of the University of Texas told the Imperial College that his decision was motivated by a move by Britain's National Union of Journalists to boycott Israeli products.

Weinberg had been due to honor Pakistani physicist Abdus Salam, a co-winner of the 1979 Nobel Prize for physics, The Guardian said.

The paper quoted Weinberg as telling the college that he believes the NUJ's move stems from the "desire to pander to the growing Muslim minority in Britain."

In his letter of withdrawal, Weinberg wrote that, "given the history of the attacks on Israel and the oppressiveness and aggressiveness of other countries in the Middle East and elsewhere, boycotting Israel indicated a moral blindness for which it is hard to find any explanation other than anti-Semitism."

The Guardian said that Weinberg also pulled out of a 2006 conference at Durham University due to a boycott of Israeli academics imposed by lecturers' union NATFHE.

#2  I wonder when it will finally be noticed that the English are really no different than the Germans in their hatred of Jews. The only difference being that the Germans had a government at one point willing to express that hatred in action.

Otherwise, an English version of Goebbels would have just as easy a job in calling for the persecution of the Jews as did the German original. In both cases, preaching to the choir.

#3  This is idiotic. There are many kinds of antisemitism and only a few ones want the extermaination of Jews, new born included. Some of the Polish people who have been declared "Justs of the Nations" for their actions during the Holocaust were antisemitic and embers of a party who wanted to expel Jews from Polaand. They risked or gave their lives for people they didn't like but their consciences didn't allow them to let those people they disliked being gassed.

Traditionsl British antisemitism had nothing in common with the kind of antisemitism of Nazis. I would be less categoric about the modern leftist inspired one who disguises itself in compassion for Palestinins (while ignoring Timor, Rwanda, pre 9/11 Afgahnistan, Sudan...)

#4  I don't know Moose, tell me, is there anyone in the German history like Cromwell who let the Jews come out in public, build their own temple, and establish their own cemetery even in the face of the usual domestic opposition?

I notice that even with the Restoration, that policy wasn't revoked.

#5  i also think this is largely the work of a small band within academia, journalism and other parts of the 'elite'. Im not sure its even the majority in those groups, given the ability of a motivated minority to manipulate an organization on an issue peripheral to its mission.

Kudos to Prof. Weinberg, though.

#7  The only thing that surprises me is that the National Union of Journalists did not choose to give the award to traitor to the civilized world Pakistani physicist A.Q. Khan - if you are going to pander to Muslims, you might as well go all the way!

Wealthy NY Couple Charged With Slavery
GARDEN CITY, N.Y. (AP) - A millionaire couple accused of keeping two Indonesian women as slaves in their luxurious Long Island home and abusing them for years have been indicted on federal slavery charges.
And their names are not 'Dick' and 'Jane'.
Varsha Mahender Sabhnani, 35, and her husband, Mahender Murlidhar Sabhnani, 51, operate a worldwide perfume business out of their home, contracting with overseas factories to manufacture the fragrances.

The two were arrested last week after one of their servants was found wandering outside a doughnut shop on Long Island, wearing only pants and a towel. The woman was believed to have fled the home in Muttontown, a tony community on Long Island's north shore, when she took the trash out the night before. The couple pleaded not guilty in U.S. District Court, and a magistrate judge set bail at $3.5 million and imposed home detention with electronic monitoring.

An indictment handed up Tuesday night formally charged with them with two counts of forced labor and added two counts of harboring illegal residents.

Charles A. Ross, who represents Varsha Sabhnani, has said that the couple traveled extensively and that the two Indonesian women were free to leave whenever they wished.
No money, no friends, no family in the U.S., and no passports, but sure, have at it, go wondering 'round the countryside.
He previously described them as "model citizens" who "only want to clear their names." Friends and relatives indicated the two would be willing to post bail, but as of Wednesday, they remained in custody.

Assistant U.S. Attorney Demitri Jones called the allegations "truly a case of modern-day slavery."
The women, prosecutors said, were subjected to beatings, had scalding water thrown on them and were forced to repeatedly climb stairs as punishment for perceived misdeeds. In one case, prosecutors said, one of the women was forced to eat 25 hot chili peppers at one time. One of the women also told authorities they were forced to sleep on mats in the kitchen and were fed so little, they had to steal food.

The women legally arrived in the United States on B-1 visas in 2002; the Sabhnanis then confiscated their passports and refused to let them leave their home, authorities said. Identified in court papers as Samirah and Nona, the women said they were promised payments of $200 and $100 a month, but federal prosecutors said they were never given money directly. One of the victims' daughters living in Indonesia was sent $100 a month, prosecutors said.

They have since been cared for by Catholic Charities, according to a spokesman for Immigration and Customs Enforcement.
More from Newsday, in which the perps are suing other perfume makers for using similar names for their fragrances:
Mahender Murlidhar Sabhnani trademarked the name Attitude and began selling the cologne under that name in 1996, but he neglected to renew the trademark with the U.S. Patent and Trademark office, his suit concedes.

Attitude is one of the many high-end fragrances that Sabhnani manufactures and distributes under the name of his company, Eternal Love Parfums, which is headquartered in his home at 205 Coachman Pl. East in Muttontown, according to the court papers. Attitude is one of the company's few products aimed at the male market. Most of the others are perfumes intended for women distributed under the names Eternal Love, Indecent, Elegance, Blu Treasure and Breathtaking, according to the papers. The location is also the place where the two Indonesian women were allegedly held in slavery.
I think I'm smelling something allright.

#1  There's something about these people's culture. It's not enough that you be rich and successful. No, you have to be rich and successful and other people have to be miserable. I don't understand it at all.

Hell, Texans call that "foreplay". But seriously folks, sell off all assets of these slimebags and reimburse the women at treble damages for unpaid back wages with overtime. Sadly, there's probably some niggling constitutional amendment that prohibits each of these perps from being given a 25 pepper enema.

Welcome to the cult of the Zero Sum Equation. These Neanderthals simply cannot conceive of the Win-Win situation. The only way that they obtain a sense of reward is through someone else's loss. It is the epitome of the bully who can only be happy if someone else is unhappy.

This is the modus operendi of Islam and a host of other throwback cultures. Tormenting others is a soothing balm for the constantly humiliated souls of those who simply cannot stand the notion of anyone else being successful if they themselves are not as well. It is taken as a personal affront that someone else would have the audacity to uplift themselves without first supplicating the personal wants and needs of these self-presumed elite. Be it Robert Mugabe, Ferdinand and Imelda Marcos, the Iranian mullahs or any other garden variety tin pot dictator, all of them view this world's wealth as their personal playtoy to be kept out of the hands of the great unwashed.

The "Cruel and unusual punishment"?

You yanks need an amendment to it saying No cruel and unusual punishment UNLESS it's fun and unusually fitting punishment.

#5  It's more pervasive than that Zenster. And it occurs within our own society, even the non-Islamicist sector.

Unfortunately, those who have a perverted need to perceive themselves, not as free in order to achieve, but superior and dominating of others, are everywhere (although I will admit it seems to be more common in certain meme sets).

You'll see more of this behavior as America (and the world) becomes more affluent. In earlier eras of humanity, only a few were wealthy. Those that had the sick need to feel superior to all others could do so simply by acquiring more wealth. And those that didn't have wealth, and had no way to obtain it and the outward creature comforts that came with it which signified "superiority", were SOL.

Now that more and more people have enough to buy a lot of creature comforts, the formerly much wealthier who have the need to feel superior feel threatened in their superiority, since even the hoi polloi can own wide screen TV's and vacation in warm places and drive nice SUV's. So they take measures to insure that other aspects of behavior still denote themselves as being superior. Constantly being late for appointments, insisting that other individuals with which one interacts ALWAYS compromise their own schedule and convenience for one's own, ridiculous demands for services that go way beyond what is reasonable, slavery, etc. I'm sure that there are other things I've missed.

The concept is called IAMITY - "I'm Always More Important Than You".

Furthermore, as wealth trickles down, now people who would have been lower on the social ladder in earlier, less affluent times, are starting to acquire the same snotty attitudes. Perhaps this is just a common human foible.

I've always felt that if I were the poorest person in the world but I could do the things I like, it wouldn't matter. The need to obsess about how much other people have in terms of their wealth, importance of their time, etc., relative to one's own in defining self esteem is a sad little psychological affliction that I don't understand. In the end it doesn't signify superiority, rather, emptiness of purpose.

#8  Do the ball park math.
In 1860 there were around 32 million Americans by the census. In 2000, it was around 300 million. From 1861 to 1865 over 250,000 white federal soldiers died to bring forth the 13th Amendment to the Constitution. Todays perspective, that would be like losing 2.3 million in four years.

Slaving in any form is despicable. That it is carried out upon our soil so consecrated by that amount of blood, there isn't a punishment good enough for this crime.

#11  I was reading something in the last couple of days - I do't think here, about 1 of the reasons why they hate the Jews.

Goes back to before WWI when there were no real formal arab/muslim states/borders - when the Jews got an actual state w/borders - it's an affront (yes, everything's an affront) it raised them above their overlords.

#16  Hmmm I wonder what political parry they support and who they sent money to? If it were a Republican we would already know that. FYI a lot of the people coming here on work visas are vitually slaves because if they leaving the employer means leaving the country (in most cases). Not defending their cruel treatment of the women and if there is justice they will have every dime they own given to these ladies.
