‘Irrelevant whether Houthis are designated’ as terrorists, Biden says, dampening speculation he’ll take step
[IsraelTimes] US President Joe The Big Guy Biden
...46th president of the U.S. ‘This Is A Man ThatDoes Not Seem Demented’...
appears to dampen expectations that he will designate the Iran's Houthi sock puppets
...a Zaidi Shia insurgent group operating in Yemen. They have also been referred to as the Believing Youth. Hussein Badreddin al-Houthi is said to be the spiritual leader of the group and most of the military leaders are his relatives. The legitimate Yemeni government has accused the them of having ties to the Iranian government. Honest they did. The group has managed to gain control over all of Saada Governorate and parts of Amran, Al Jawf and Hajjah Governorates. Its slogan is God is Great, Death to America™, Death to Israel, a curse on the Jews They like shooting off... ummm... missiles that they would have us believe they make at home in their basements. On the plus side, they did murder Ali Abdullah Saleh, which was the only way the country was ever going to be rid of him...
s as a terror organization two days after calling the Iran-backed rebel group ruling Yemen
...an area of the Arabian Peninsula sometimes mistaken for a country. It is populated by more antagonistic tribes and factions than you can keep track of...
a terror group.

"It’s irrelevant whether they’re designated," Biden tells news hounds at an event in Pennsylvania in response to a question regarding whether he would take that step after intensifying his rhetoric against the Houthis.

During his first year in office, Biden removed the Houthis’ terror listing amid pressure from progressives who argued that it was harming efforts to deliver humanitarian aid in Yemen.

The administration said it decided to review that decision in November against the backdrop of repeated attacks by Houthis on international vessels in the Red Sea, which the rebel group claims are taken in solidarity with Paleostinians after October 7.

No update has been offered since then, but Biden’s affirmation to a question regarding whether he considers the Houthis a terror group led many to assume the administration was leaning toward slapping the terror label back on. The president’s remarks came hours after the US led Arclight airstrike
...KABOOM!...

Taken together, the four main categories of sanctions resulting from designation under these authorities include restrictions on U.S. foreign assistance; a ban on defense exports and sales; certain controls over exports of dual use items; and miscellaneous financial and other restrictions....

Ambrey said three missiles were reportedly launched by the Houthis, with two not reaching the sea and the third striking the bulk carrier.

If 2/3rds of the Houthi missiles are striking Yemen, possibly the nastiest thing we can do to them is keep providing them targets to miss.

Britain
Thousands of Israel supporters march in London, Paris, Berlin on 100th day of war
As if Hamas cared in the least about anyone’s grief and anger.
[IsraelTimes] On foot and bike, thousands of Israel supporters gather in London, Gay Paree, and Berlin to call for the release of hostages held by Hamas
...a regional Iranian catspaw,...
for 100 days.

Several thousand turn London landmark Trafalgar Square into a sea of Israeli flags and yellow balloons, symbolizing the 132 hostages who remain captive after being kidnapped on October 7.

Some supporters hold placards reading, "Stand with Israel" and "Never again is now," while guest speakers on stage lead the crowd in chants of, "Bring them home."

Several hundred people also march through the streets of Berlin, waving Israeli flags to demand the "immediate" release of the hostages. Marchers carry signs reading "100 days in hell" and "Bring the hostages home now."

Others hold up placards criticizing the Israeli government for "betraying the hostages" and calling for "an immediate ceasefire."

And in Gay Paree, a series of events take place at the foot of the Eiffel Tower.

Earlier in London, around 250 cyclists completed a 4.5 mile (7.2 kilometer) ride inside Regents Park to draw attention to those still detained.

Europe
Tesla, Volvo pause production in Europe amid Red Sea shipping crisis
[FoxBusinessNews] Tesla and Volvo announced last week that they were suspending some of their production in Europe due to a shortage of components caused by shipping being re-routed away from the Red Sea and Suez Canal because of the threat of attack from Iran-backed Houthi militants in Yemen.

Tesla told Reuters on Thursday it will suspend most car production at its Gigafactory near Berlin from Jan. 29 to Feb. 11 because of a lack of components that were on ships re-routed away from the Red Sea and Suez Canal to around the Cape of Good Hope at the southern tip of Africa.

"The armed conflicts in the Red Sea and the associated shifts in transport routes between Europe and Asia via the Cape of Good Hope are having an impact on production in Gruenheide," a Tesla statement said. "The considerably longer transportation times are creating a gap in supply chains."

The Berlin-Brandenburg Gigafactory, located near Gruenheide, is where Tesla assembles electric vehicles it sells in Europe. The company did not specify which components have been delayed that are affecting the factory’s operations.

Volvo, which is majority-owned by China-based firm Geely, said it will pause output at its plant in Ghent, Belgium, for three days next week because of a delayed delivery of gearboxes.

Some tanker operators have also stopped traversing the Red Sea amid the Houthi attacks on shipping and re-routed shipping around Africa, as have shipping giants like Maersk and Hapag-Lloyd. Maersk said in early January it expects the re-routing, which adds about 10 days and an additional $1 million in fuel expenses, to last for the foreseeable future.

NY’s Central Park hosts rally in support of hostages held by Hamas
[IsraelTimes] Family members of hostages and Manhattan Borough President Mark Levine address crowd of 2,000 gathered for Marching and Running for their Lives in Central Park.

The US march and run through Central Park on Sunday morning demanding that the remaining hostages be returned home was the most well-attended of the weekly Sunday events that have occurred since October 7, organizer Shany Granot Lubaton told The Times of Israel.

Speakers included Manhattan Borough President Mark Levine as well as relatives of current and released hostages.

"We are here because Hamas
...the braying voice of Islamic Resistance®,...
has perpetrated the largest mass kidnapping in modern world history," Levine said in a speech that was half English and half American-accented Hebrew. "From the beginning, this was downplayed by the world community, and it is an outrage.

"We will not forget — we have not forgotten," Levine said to applause and chants of "Bring Them Home Now." "We will be here every single week, as long as it takes, demanding that none of our leaders take their eye off this goal... We are not going to let them look away from this horror."

As the group walked and ran around the Central Park reservoir on the blustery winter morning carrying Israeli flags and posters of hostages’ faces, they were greeted by cheers, applause, nods and even runners and pedestrians who opted to join the march, chanting "Enough Is Enough: Bring Them Home." No counterdemonstrators were present.

"I wish they’d do this every day," marcher Joe Scholz from New York said. "I wish the rest of the American media would keep reporting on this issue, prominently, every day, especially since they’re holding American hostages in Gazoo
...Hellhole adjunct to Israel and Egypt's Sinai Peninsula, inhabited by Gazooks. The place was acquired in the wake of the 1967 War and then presented to Paleostinian control in 2006 by Ariel Sharon, who had entered his dotage. It is currently ruled with an iron fist by Hamas with about the living conditions you'd expect. It periodically attacks the Hated Zionist Entity whenever Iran needs a ruckus created or the hard boyz get bored, getting thumped by the IDF in return. The ruling turbans then wave the bloody shirt and holler loudly about oppression and disproportionate response...
as well."

"I’ve been here every week since October 7," Lenna Perlman from New York said, clutching the leashes of her two dogs, Rosie and Rowdy, who were each wearing ’Bring Them Home’ T-shirts of their own. "We may live all over, but we can only do that safely as Jews because of Israel. So I’ll do whatever I can."

Moshe Lavi, brother-in-law of hostage Omri Miran, said he felt today was "very powerful."

"These events allow the families to feel that there is a community behind us," Lavi told the Times of Israel. "Despite the voices of hate, there are voices of love and support."

Lavi recounted recently meeting with officials in Washington, DC, while Omri’s father is in The Hague at the International Court of Justice hearing, in which Israel is accused by South Africa of committing genocide in the Gaza Strip and Omri’s sister spoke at the rally in Tel Aviv.

"We are all doing whatever we can," Lavi said with a sigh. "We are tired. But events are so that public officials — here in the US and in Israel and in the international community — who have deserted us will understand that this is a humanitarian issue that must be resolved.

"This is not a one-time thing," organizer Granot Lubaton told the crowd. "For 13 weeks, we’ve been doing this at 11 a.m. on Sundays, and we will keep doing it at 11 a.m. on Sundays until the very last of them comes home."

#1  Lest we forget: Hamas was watched closely by the first Bush, and then the FBI backed off under Clinton. Five days after the bombing of the World Trade Center [in 1993], the State Department revealed that U.S. diplomats have had "contacts" with HAMAS. State Department spokesman Richard Boucher acknowledged that contacts between the USA and HAMAS had existed for "some time", but were severed "in the last week or so." No explanation for the initiation of the contacts was provided. At the same time, press reports indicated that the FBI was "probing" the organization as part of its investigation of the bombing.

India-Pakistan
'India Out': Maldives tells India to pull out troops amid tense ties
[GEO.TV] Maldives President Mohammed Muizzu has issued a deadline for India to withdraw its military personnel from the island nation, emphasising that Indian troops must leave by March 15.

This announcement comes in the wake of Muizzu's recent state visit to China, marking an upgrade in diplomatic ties with Beijing.

Diplomatic tensions between India and Maldives escalated following derogatory comments made by Maldivian ministers against Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, leading to their dismissal. President Muizzu, in response to the criticism, asserted, "We may be small, but no one has the licence to bully us."

Abdulla Nazim Ibrahim, the public policy secretary at the President's Office, stressed, "Indian military personnel cannot stay in the Maldives. This is the policy of President Dr Mohammed Muizzu and that of this administration." Reports indicate the presence of approximately 88 Indian troops in Maldives.
That’ll be a major change, no doubt about it.
The call for the withdrawal of Indian troops aligns with President Muizzu's election promise and his "India Out" campaign. Both nations have established a high-level core group to negotiate the troop withdrawal, with the group's inaugural meeting held at the Foreign Ministry Headquarters in Male'.
Less than a hundred men? How long could it take them to decamp?
During the meeting, discussions covered bilateral cooperation, ongoing development projects, and finding a mutually workable solution to ensure the continued operation of Indian aviation platforms providing humanitarian services in Maldives. The next meeting of the High-Level Core Group is scheduled to take place in India.

The diplomatic shift from the previous "India First" policy under Ibrahim Solih to the current "India Out" stance is not abrupt. Abdullah Yameen, Solih's predecessor, initiated an anti-India campaign in 2013, aligning Maldives closer to China. In contrast, Solih maintained friendly ties with India during his tenure from 2018 to 2023.

President Muizzu, while seeking a balance between India and China, has affirmed that he does not intend to replace Indian military personnel with Chinese troops.

The evolving diplomatic scenario raises concerns about China's economic interests and the potential impact of its debt trap policy on the island nation.

Political parties asked to ensure 'mandatory' women representation in Feb 8 general elections
[GEO.TV] Ahead of the sought-after February 8 elections, political parties have been directed to ensure "mandatory" 5 per cent representation of women candidates on general seats.
I think Claudine Gay's available...
In an order issued on Sunday, the Election Commission of Pakistain (ECP) asked all political parties concerned to comply with Section 206 of the Elections Act, 2017, to ensure mandatory 5% representation of women candidates on general seats after the allocation of election symbols.

The electoral watchdog also ordered the political parties to submit the list of male and female candidates for general seats within five days.

The TTP is back
[GEO.TV] Pakistain has long grappled with the persistent threat posed by the Tehrik-e-Taliban
...Arabic for students...
Pakistain, characterised by cycles of violence and subsequent governmental efforts to suppress their influence.

It was during the end of Musharraf’s government that Fazlullah captured Swat
...a valley and an administrative district in the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Province of Pakistain, located 99 mi from Islamabad. It is inhabited mostly by Pashto speakers. The place has gone steadily downhill since the days when Babe Ruth was the Sultan of Swat...
while Lal Masjid
...literally the Red Mosque, located in Islamabad and frequented by all sorts of high govt officials. The proprietors, Ghazi Abdul Rasheed and Maulana Abdul Aziz Ghazi, unleashed their Islamic storm troopers on the city, shutting down whorehouses and beating people up who weren't devout enough. The Musharraf govt put an end to the nonsense by besieging the place. Abdul Aziz Ghazi was nabbed while he was trying to escape dressed up like a girl. BBC reported that the corpse count at 173, but other claims, usually hysterical, say there were up to 1000 titzup. Among their number was Abdul Rashid Ghazi. Everyone then said tut-tut and what a nice guy he had been...
became a hotbed of extremism in the heart of Islamabad. Attacks started indiscriminately across Pakistain on a very regular basis.

Notably, the period between 2014 and 2018 saw a significant reduction in TTP-related incidents, owing in part to the implementation of the National Action Plan (NAP) by the PML-N government. The National Action Plan, devised in 2014, was a comprehensive strategy aimed at countering terrorism and extremism in Pakistain. It encompassed a multifaceted approach, including military operations against hard boy groups, reforms in the judicial system, madrassa regulation, and measures to curb hate speech and financing for terrorist organizations.

Under NAP, the PML-N government took stringent measures, which led to a considerable decrease in TTP-led attacks and restored a sense of stability in regions previously plagued by violence. However,
today is that tomorrow you were thinking about yesterday...
the subsequent shift in government policy under former prime minister Imran Khan
...aka The Great Khan, who ain't the sharpest bulb on the national tree...
’s leadership altered the trajectory of these efforts.

The PTI government’s approach, notably marked by Khan’s assertion that the Afghan Taliban are our neighbours and allies fighting for their freedom, signified a departure from the adversarial stance of previous governments. In the National Assembly, Khan stated that the late Osama bin Laden
...... who is now neither a strong horse nor a weak horse, but a dead horse......
was "martyred" by the US forces. Readers will also remember his statement about the Afghan Taliban "breaking the shackles of slavery" when the US forces left Afghanistan. It was all part of a strategy.

In the past when the TTP and other bully boy groups were attacking Pakistain relentlessly, Imran Khan had claimed that this was because of the ongoing war in Afghanistan and the international forces that were there for nearly two decades after 9/11 as part of the "war on terror".

This change in rhetoric was accompanied by a controversial plan to resettle TTP elements within Pakistain, raising concerns among experts and the public regarding national security implications. There is also the issue of bully boyz being among the approximately six hundred thousand Afghans coming into Pakistain during 2021.

Post-implementation of the resettlement plan, Pakistain has witnessed a disconcerting resurgence of Taliban-linked attacks in 2023. The frequency and intensity of these attacks have spread alarm across various regions, targeting both urban centers and rural areas, undermining the hard-won gains achieved through the National Action Plan.

So far this year there have been more than four hundred terrorist attacks throughout Pakistain. One wonders whether this is just the beginning and things are heading back to the post-2008 era when terrorism was rife throughout the country leading up to the horrific attacks on airports and the Army Public School. Readers may remember that these attacks were ruthless.

This resurgence in violence has significantly jeopardised public safety, calling into question the effectiveness of the PTI government’s strategy in addressing the terror threat. Public apprehension, along with concerns voiced by experts and opposition parties, underscores the urgency for a critical reevaluation of policies and approaches to safeguard the nation’s security interests.

It is now clear that the narrative peddled by Imran Khan throughout the past twenty years that the TTP is attacking Pakistain because we are supporting the Americans has proved to be wrong. The Americans have left Afghanistan but the attacks on Pakistain have returned with a vengeance. This is despite the full support given to the Taliban in Afghanistan by Imran Khan’s government. It is clear that the TTP will not be satisfied with any peace treaties or appeasement as they will not stop until they overthrow the state and implement their version of Shariah throughout the country. We can look at what is happening in Afghanistan to see what this means. This would be a state where women are no longer allowed to work or study and all opposition is eliminated.

As Pakistain grapples with the escalating TTP threat, revisiting the successful elements of NAP and aligning them with current security challenges has become imperative. Concerted efforts are needed to ensure that the safety and well-being of citizens remain paramount in the face of mounting security risks.

In conclusion, the trajectory from a successful containment of TTP threats through NAP to the resurgence of violence following a shift in policy underscores the gravity of the situation. Immediate action and a comprehensive, well-aligned strategy are essential to mitigate the escalating TTP threat and pave the way for a secure and peaceful future for Pakistain.

Sho, sho. Can we have a Taiwanese state too? Then shuddup.
In a presser with his Egyptian counterpart Sameh Shoukry in Cairo, the top Chinese diplomat said "it is necessary to insist on the establishment of an independent, fully sovereign state of Paleostine on the 1967 borders, with east Jerusalem as its capital."

A joint statement from the two ministers urged an immediate end "to all acts of violence, killing and targeting of civilians and civilian establishments".

Israel launched an intense military campaign in response to Hamas´s deadly October 7 attack on southern Israel.

In Gaza, at least 23,968 people have been killed, the majority of them women and kiddies, according to the health ministry in the besieged Hamas-ruled territory.

Shoukry and Wang called for "an international summit for peace to find a just, comprehensive and lasting solution to the Paleostinian cause by ending the (Israeli) occupation and establishing an independent, contiguous Paleostinian state."

The Gaza Strip and the occupied West Bank, seat of the Paleostinian Authority, are separated by Israeli territory. Both were seized by Israel in the 1967 Six-Day War.

Chinese President Xi Jinping has previously called for an "international peace conference" to resolve the fighting.

China has historically been sympathetic to the Paleostinian cause and supportive of a two-state solution to the Israeli-Paleostinian conflict.

Wang is currently on an African tour that will see him also visit Togo, Tunisia and Ivory Coast.

operatives and fighters of other terror groups have been killed by the IDF in the Gaza Strip since the beginning of the war, in addition to some 1,000 holy warriors inside Israel on October 7. The Hamas-run health ministry has said over 23,000 Paleostinians have been killed in Gaza, which includes both civilians and Hamas members.

The IDF’s data says the military has killed two Hamas brigade commanders and 19 battalion commanders and other bigwigs with an equivalent rank. More than 50 Hamas company commanders and operatives with a similar rank have also been killed, according to the data.

In Lebanon, the IDF says it has killed more than 170 terror operatives, mostly members of the Iran-backed Hezbollah.

Some 30,000 targets have been struck in the Gaza Strip since the beginning of the war, including more than 3,400 that were discovered as Hamas sites during the fighting. In Lebanon, some 750 Hezbollah positions have been hit, according to the IDF’s data.

Since the beginning of the war, some 9,000 projectiles fired from Gaza crossed the border into Israel, another 2,000 from Lebanon, and around 30 from Syria.

The IDF says the Military Intelligence Directorate’s Unit 504 has interrogated some 2,300 Paleostinian suspects in the Gaza Strip, some of whom were arrested and brought to Israel for further questioning.

A total of 7,653 trucks ferrying humanitarian aid entering the Gaza Strip have been inspected by Israeli authorities at the Nitzana and Kerem Shalom crossings. The IDF says the trucks have carried a total of 137,920 tons of aid.

The IDF has also made 79,000 phone calls, dropped 7.2 million leaflets, sent 13.7 million texts and 15 million recorded calls to Paleostinians in Gaza with evacuation warnings.

Since October 7, in the West Bank, the IDF says troops have arrested more than 2,650 wanted Paleostinians, including more than 1,300 affiliated with Hamas. It says 40 brigade-level raids have been carried out, and 14 homes of Paleostinians accused of terrorism have been demolished.

According to the IDF’s data, a total of 295,000 reservists have been called up since the beginning of the war. Of them, around 45,000 are serving despite receiving an exemption from reserve duty.

The IDF says the nearly 300,000 reservists have been on duty for an average of 61 days.

Men make up 81 percent of the reservists, with the other 19% women. 115,000 of the reservists are fathers, and some 3,000 are mothers. Half of the reservists are between the ages of 20-29, with 31% being between the ages of 30-39. Another 13% are aged 40-49, 5% aged 50-59, and 1% aged 60-69.

A total of 522 soldiers, reservists and local security officers have been killed and another 2,536 have been maimed since October 7. Of them, 188 were killed and 1,113 were maimed during the ground offensive in Gaza.

The IDF has also listed 19 soldiers killed due to friendly fire in Gaza, and another 36 by accidents during the war, including car crashes and military-related incidents.

#1  Haaretz 23 Oct 2001, Amnan Barzilai: "Reinventing warfare" Even before the terror attacks on the U.S., several thinkers considered the nature of future warfare and predicted it would change dramatically. On September 11, just hours before the terror attacks on the USA, Minister without Portfolio Dan Meridor addressed students of the National Security College. Tel Aviv. The topic of his lecture was the character of future warfare.
Meridor told his audience, most of whom were senior officers in the Israel Defense Forces, that given Israel's significant edge in conventional warfare, the Arabs have shifted to warfare at two levels.
The first level, which can be called supra-conventional, involves the development of nuclear, biological and chemical weapons. The second
level, which can be called sub-conventional, expresses itself in non-conventional terrorism.
...for example, a terrorist incident can turn the entire oxygen system in a nation's hospitals haywire. In this instance, as well, the result would be a mass terrorist attack. The problem facing both Israel, in particular, and the West, in general, in the war against terrorism is
that it is impossible to pinpoint the precise source of the terror. No one has any clear idea whom to counter-attack and the nature of the
counter-attack." The conclusion Meridor offered was this: "Israel's defense echelons must reformulate their theory of combat in dealing with a threat in which planes, tanks and precision-guided weapons constitute an inadequate solution."
Sub-conventionally, Israel got lazy.
