Targeted again after Oct. 7, Tunisia’s small Jewish community wonders what future it has
[IsraelTimes] Djerba’s Jews were slowly healing from a deadly terror attack in May, but an attack on a Tunisia synagogue and escalated hostile rhetoric are prompting new thoughts of emigration

After a deadly May terror attack at the historic Ghriba synagogue on the Tunisian island of Djerba during the Jewish holiday of Lag B’Omer, the 1,500-strong community didn’t feel secure enough to restart communal prayer in the island’s main temple until the recent Sukkot holiday in October.

That feeling of security was short-lived.

US sanctions network responsible for financing Houthi attacks in the Red Sea
[Rudaw] The US Department of the Treasury on Thursday said it designated three entities and one individual responsible for facilitating the flow of Iranian financial support to Iran's Houthi sock puppets
...a Zaidi Shia insurgent group operating in Yemen. They have also been referred to as the Believing Youth. Hussein Badreddin al-Houthi is said to be the spiritual leader of the group and most of the military leaders are his relatives. The legitimate Yemeni government has accused the them of having ties to the Iranian government. Honest they did. The group has managed to gain control over all of Saada Governorate and parts of Amran, Al Jawf and Hajjah Governorates. Its slogan is God is Great, Death to America™, Death to Israel, a curse on the Jews They like shooting off... ummm... missiles that they would have us believe they make at home in their basements. On the plus side, they did murder Ali Abdullah Saleh, which was the only way the country was ever going to be rid of him...

The designated legal persons are part of a financial network linked to Iran-based Houthi financier Sa’id al Jamal, designated in 2021 "or having materially assisted, sponsored, or provided financial, material, or technological support for, or goods or services to or in support of" the US-designated Iran Revolutionary Guard Corp Quds Force (IRGC-QF).

As a result of this move, all assets and property belonging to the specified legal persons, "that are in the United States or in the possession or control of U.S. persons," are frozen and must be disclosed to the Treasury’s Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC). Furthermore, any organizations that are owned, whether directly or indirectly, individually or collectively, by 50 percent or more by one or more individuals subject to asset blocking are also subject to the same restrictions.

Moreover, legal persons and financial institutions who are found to engage in the "contribution or provision of funds, goods, or services by, to, or for the benefit of any designated person," or the receipt of any of the latter, might also be subject to sanctions or an enforcement action.

Mexican Forces Use Bulldozers to Clear Out Matamoros Immigrant Camp
[HotAir] The removal of the camp happened earlier this month, amid Mexican President Andrés Manuel López Obrador’s meeting with U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken on immigration.

On Wednesday, Matamoros officials told The Associated Press that they were only getting rid of vacant or abandoned tents.

A Honduran immigrant denied the officials’ claim.

“They ran us out,” he said, according to Fox News. He also said that the migrants were only given a quick notice before they started the process.
"Git!"
[One has to imagine that the Mexicans are tired of this too, although not as tired as we are of it. Unfortunately, this apparently prompted the camp residents to cross into the US. If Mexico really wants to disincentivize this mass migration, they should work not just on their northern border but also on their southern border as well; — Ed]

Caucasus/Russia/Central Asia
The differences between 'honor killings' in the regions of the North Caucasus are summarized
Direct Translation via Google Translate. Edited.
[KavkazUzel] The problem of murders of women by relatives remains acute in Dagestan, Ingushetia and Chechnya, human rights activist Saida Sirazhudinova noted in her report on domestic violence. The problem of bride kidnapping also remains relevant in the republics, it follows from the report.

As the "Caucasian Knot" wrote, the problem of domestic violence in Dagestan, Ingushetia and Chechnya affects women of different ages, but mostly young girls under 30 try to escape from it. At the same time, they face threats of losing contact with children, and the problem of “honor killings” also remains relevant, human rights activists from the Ad Rem team indicated in their report on November 13. The problem of evacuating victims of domestic violence is most acute among the regions of the North Caucasian Federal District in Dagestan, Ingushetia and Chechnya, since the authorities and security forces there take the side of family aggressors, human rights activists interviewed by the Caucasian Knot commented on the report.

FBI, law enforcement brace for potential threats during New Year's Eve bash
As they’ve done since 9/11.
[FoxNews] An overseas war between Israel and Hamas brought tensions to a boil throughout the U.S., including New York City, where over 1 million people are expected to ring in the new year.

James Smith, assistant director in charge of New York's FBI Field Office, said there are concerns about international and domestic terrorism and a rise in hate crimes, and law enforcement follows up on all threats.

"I would say overall that, yes, there are threats out there, but we are out there to protect the community day in and day out," Smith told Fox News Digital.

"That's our mission – to protect the community of all threats."

Smith said the FBI, which is working with dozens of local, state and other federal law enforcement agencies, is ready to pounce on potential threats.

But it's just as important that revelers pay attention to their surroundings and follow the adage, "If you see something, say something."

"We cannot protect the community without people reporting if there's a threat or if a potential crime is about to take place," Smith said.

There will be a massive law enforcement presence in and around Times Square Sunday night into early Monday. Some will be undercover; others will be in tactical gear.

Iraq
Nearly 20,000 people migrated out of Iraq in 2023: Refugee foundation
[Rudaw] Around 20,000 people from Iraq and the Kurdistan Region migrated out of the country in 2023, with at least nine of them losing their lives on the dangerous and illegal smuggling routes, a refugee foundation told Rudaw on Wednesday.

Over 760,000 people have migrated from Iraq and the Kurdistan Region since 2015, with the lowest number during that period being recorded in 2023 with 19,500 migrants colonists, Hussein Hama Salih, the Greece representative of Summit (Lutka) Foundation for Refugees and Displaced Affairs told Rudaw’s Hemin Baban.

The number of migrants colonists for 2023 is significantly lower than the data for 2022, during which Lutka recorded over 71,000 migrants colonists. The foundation also reported at least nine migrant deaths over the past year, adding that the whereabouts of at least two others remain unknown.

"Most of the people that migrate to Europa
...the land mass occupying the space between the English Channel and the Urals, also known as Moslem Lebensraum...
are from the Kurdistan Region and a smaller number are from Iraq’s other areas and provinces, therefore the majority of the casualties are also from the Kurdistan Region," Hama Salih added.

Tens of thousands of people from Iraq and the Kurdistan Region take on perilous routes out of the country towards Europe on a yearly basis in hopes of escaping the endless crises in the country, including the lack of employment, political instability, and corruption.

At least two people, including a 22-year-old Kurdish man from Sulaimani province’s Raparin administration, died when a boat carrying over 60 migrants colonists capsized in the English Channel off the coast of La Belle France earlier this month.

Yazidi teen reunites with family in Duhok after nearly a decade of ISIS captivity
[Rudaw] After having been taken captive by the Islamic State
...formerly ISIS or ISIL, depending on your preference. Before that they were al-Qaeda in Iraq, as shaped by Abu Musab Zarqawi. They're really very devout, committing every atrocity they can find in the Koran and inventing a few more. They fling Allah around with every other sentence, but to hear western pols talk they're not really Moslems....
(ISIS) nearly a decade ago, a 19-year-old Yazidi youth reunited with his family members at a camp in Duhok province on Monday.

Hazim Abbas was rescued by the Kurdistan Region Presidency’s Office for Rescuing Kidnapped Yazidi and brought back to his immediate family members at the Chamishko internally displaced persons (IDP) camp in Zakho.

Abbas was not ready to speak to journalists and his family did not want to disclose the location that he was rescued from, in fear of jeopardizing the attempts to rescue other family members still being held in the same place.

The moment Abbas arrived at the Chamishko camp, his relatives and other residents of the camp started performing a traditional Kurdish dance.

"Today, one of our captives from Siba Sheikh Khidir has returned. He just arrived at Chamishko [camp] in Zakho. We have all gathered here to welcome him back. We are thrilled to have him reunite with us," Base Qasim, an elderly woman, and a relative of Abbas, told Rudaw.

Bire Hasse, Abbas's grandmother, keeps praying for the return of all the other family members who have yet to be rescued.

"He is my grandson. There are still eight others [grandchildren] in the hands of ISIS. They had taken hostage 15 family members," Hasse said, adding that Abbas's parents are in Australia.

Abdulla Sharim, a member of the Office for Rescuing Kidnapped Yazidis who took part in the process of rescuing Abbas, said it took them three months to rescue him, without disclosing where he was.

"It was easier to rescue our [Yazidi] hostages when ISIS was in power, because we knew exactly where they were, and we knew how to exploit ISIS' weak points and how to deal with this matter," Sharim said, noting that the job has now become more difficult.

"We used to say that with the end of ISIS the Yazidis' wounds would be healed by returning our sons and daughters from captivity. But ISIS has collapsed and not all of them have returned yet."

Of 6,417 Yazidis who were taken hostage by ISIS during a brutal takeover on August 3, 2014, Abbas is the 3,576th person to be rescued so far.

Kurdistan Region President Nechirvan Barzani established the Office for Rescuing Kidnapped Yazidis in 2014 to find and return the missing Yazidi women and kiddies.

On August 3, 2014, ISIS Lions of Islam took over the Shingal district of northern Iraq, committing genocide against the Yazidi minority. Thousands fled their homes as the Lions of Islam systematically killed men and older women, and enslaved younger women and kiddies. More than 5,000 Yazidis were killed in the genocide.

Women and maiden of tender yearss were sold into sexual slavery, with young boys forced to fight for the terror group. Over 2,000 Yazidis remain missing.

Over 50 suspected terrorists killed in 2023: Iraqi counterterrorism
[Rudaw] The Iraqi counterterrorism service (CTS) on Wednesday announced that over 50 suspected members of terrorist groups were killed in 2023, reaffirming the country’s dedication to hunting down remnants of the Islamic State
...formerly ISIS or ISIL, depending on your preference. Before that they were al-Qaeda in Iraq, as shaped by Abu Musab Zarqawi. They're really very devout, committing every atrocity they can find in the Koran and inventing a few more. (ISIS).

"Over the recent period, the service used modern and advanced intelligence techniques that weakened the capabilities of ISIS, and we developed tactics to limit the guerrilla war that the enemy resorts to... we abandoned typical military operations," Sabah al-Numan, spokesperson for the Iraqi CTS, said during a presser.

Numan said that a total of 135 suspected Death Eaters in big shotship positions were arrested by the CTS, and 51 others were killed across 240 missions throughout the country in 2023.

The CTS cooperated with the counterterrorism units in Sulaimani and Erbil on 31 joint missions which resulted in the arrest of 32 suspected terrorists, according to the spokesperson.

Security forces (Asayish) in Sulaimani in November announced the arrest of 55 Islamic State (ISIS) suspects, including three emirs, in a five-month-long operation.

"We have focused and will continue to focus on [pursuing] ISIS leaders through sources and intelligence information," he added.

ISIS seized control of swathes of Iraqi land in 2014 but it was declared territorially defeated in 2017 when Kurdish and Iraqi fighters supported by the US-led coalition drove them out of the stretches of land they seized years prior in a brazen offensive.

Thousands of people have been detained across Iraq since 2014 for suspected links to terrorist groups, including ISIS, and hundreds have been executed.

The Islamic Resistance® in Iraq, a network of shadow Iraqi militia groups affiliated with Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), said early Thursday that a day earlier it struck "a technical spy centre affiliated with the Zionist entity northeast of Erbil with appropriate weapons."

Peshawa Hawramani, the KRG spokesperson, categorically denied the allegation.

"An outlaw force has announced bombarding an Israeli base in Erbil with a drone. This news by these groups and illegal forces is baseless and untrue. There are no Israeli bases in the Region," he said.

Kurdish parties lose majority in Kirkuk provincial polls, Final results announced across Iraq
[Rudaw] Kurdish political parties failed to maintain their majority in the disputed province of Kirkuk during the mid-December provincial elections, according to final official results announced on Thursday.

Local elections were held in Iraq’s 15 provinces, excluding the Kurdistan Region, on December 18. Iraq’s Independent High Electoral Commission (IHEC) announced final official results late Thursday.

The Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK) gained five seats (157,649 votes) and the Kurdistan Democratic Party

They want to stop continental drift and repeal the law of unintended side effects...
(KDP) won two seats (52,278 votes) in the 16-seat provincial council, according to the results.

The Kurdish New Generation won 25,910 votes but failed to secure a seat. The party has been accused by the other two Kurdish parties of jeopardizing a Kurdish victory in the province - a claim disputed by the movement.

Arabs gained six seats and Turkmens won two seats. A party close to Shiite militia groups, won the Christian quota seat.

In the last polls held in the province nearly two decades ago, Kurdish parties had won most of the council’s seats.

It periodically attacks the Hated Zionist Entity whenever Iran needs a ruckus created or the hard boyz get bored, getting thumped by the IDF in return. The ruling turbans then wave the bloody shirt and holler loudly about oppression and disproportionate response...
The news came less than a week after the kibbutz announced that Judith’s husband, Gadi Haggai, initially thought to be held hostage, was also killed during the events of October 7. His body is also being held by Hamas.

"Our prayers are with their families and all those who are mourning this loss," writes Harris on X.

"To the families of Americans still held hostage: You are not alone. We will not waver in our commitment to bring home your loved ones,’ she says.

Haggai and Weinstein, both dual Israeli-American citizens, were on their morning walk when gunfire erupted and missiles streaked across the sky on October 7. Taking cover in a field, they could hear a recorded voice from an alert system for their kibbutz, Nir Oz, in southern Israel.

US President Joe The Big Guy Biden
...46th president of the U.S. Former Senator-for-Life from Delaware, an example of the kind of top-notch Washington intellect to be found in the World's Greatest Deliberative Body....
earlier issued a statement saying that "Jill and I are devastated to learn" of Weinstein-Haggai’s death.

"This tragic development cuts deep, coming on the heels of last week’s news that Judy’s beloved husband, Gad Haggai, is believed to have been killed by Hamas," he said. "We are holding Judy and Gad’s four children, seven grandchildren, and other loved ones close to our hearts."

Biden added: "I will never forget what their daughter and the family members of other Americans held hostage in Gaza, have shared with me. They have been living through hell for weeks. No family should have to endure such an ordeal."

Fair enough, Grom. But they believe Israel’s war is getting in the way of negotiating for the release of the hostages, and they’ve been openly pressuring Israel to reduce the pace and increase the amount of aid sent across the border in order to seduce Hamas to the negotiating table, not to mention the question of whether Hamas or the PA will be given Gaza to run afterward. According to one report, President Biden abruptly hung up on Bibi yesterday when the prime minister refused.

Sec of State Blinken bypasses congressional review for month’s second fast-tracked arms sale to Israel
[IsraelTimes] US Secretary of State Antony Blinken
...71st United States secretary of state and a leading light of the corrupt and inept Biden administration. He previously served as deputy national security advisor from 2013 to 2015 and deputy secretary of state from 2015 to 2017 under the corrupt and inept Obama administration. He advocated for the 2003 invasion of Iraq while serving as the Democratic staff director of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee from 2002 to 2008. He was a foreign policy advisor for the Biden 2008 presidential campaign. During his tenure in the Obama administration, Blinken helped craft B.O.'s policy on Afghanistan, Pakistan, and the nuclear program of Iran. We all saw how well each of those worked. After leaving government service, Blinken moved into the private sector, co-founding WestExec Advisors, a lobbying firm...

for the second time this month.

The move suggested that growing discomfort in Washington with Israel’s conduct is not yet influencing its near-daily supply of weapons used by the IDF to prosecute the war.

Explaining Blinken’s latest decision to waive congressional review, the US State Department said that the secretary of state determined that an emergency exists that required the immediate sale of 155 millimeter artillery shells and related equipment to Israel.

The State Department said Israel requested that fuzes, primers and charges be included in a previous request for the 155 mm shells. The estimated total value of the sale was $147.5 million.

Blinken used the same emergency authority to fast-track the sale of $106 million in roughly 14,000 tank shells to Israel on December 9.

The State Department sought to counter potential criticism of the sale on human rights

grounds by saying it was in constant touch with Israel to emphasize the importance of minimizing civilian casualties.

Biden officials have also intensified their calls for Israel to scale back the IDF’s high-intensity fighting in recent weeks.

"We continue to strongly emphasize to the government of Israel that they must not only comply with international humanitarian law, but also take every feasible step to prevent harm to civilians," the State Department said Friday.

"Hamas hides behind civilians and has embedded itself among the civilian population, but that does not lessen Israel’s responsibility and strategic imperative to distinguish between civilians and Hamas bully boyz as it conducts its military operations," the department said. "This type of campaign can only be won by protecting civilians."

Bypassing Congress with emergency determinations for arms sales is an unusual step that has in the past met resistance from politicians, who normally have a period of time to weigh in on proposed weapons transfers and, in some cases, block them.

The US and Israel have maintained an understanding whereby Washington continues to provide backing for Israel’s war against Hamas, while Jerusalem takes steps to ensure that humanitarian aid into Gazoo

can surge in parallel, an Israeli official told The Times of Israel earlier this month.

But aid delivery in the month since a seven-day truce has been limited, with Israel blaming UN and Egyptian authorities for failing to keep up with its pace of inspections, while the UN insists that substantial aid cannot be safely delivered as long as the fighting continues.

Just 81 trucks carrying humanitarian aid entered Gaza through Israel’s Kerem Shalom and Egypt’s Rafah crossings on Friday, the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs said.

Kerem Shalom had been closed for three days until today due to what OCHA says were security incidents, including an IDF dronezap, the seizure of aid by desperate locals and unannounced and uncoordinated prisoner and casualty transfers from Israel.

"The volume of aid remains woefully inadequate," OCHA said in a statement.

Israel reopened its Kerem Shalom Crossing on December 17 for aid to enter Gaza directly from Israel for the first time since the war’s outbreak.

However,
facts are stubborn; statistics are more pliable...
the move hasn’t led to the desired increase in aid delivery.

Two hundred trucks entered Gaza each day of last month’s week-long truce. The daily figure has not come close to that number since. Before the war and the massive humanitarian crisis that it has sparked, roughly 500 trucks of aid were entering Gaza each day.

SDF says arrested over 350 ISIS suspects in 2023
[Rudaw] The Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) on Friday said that it captured more than 350 suspected members of the Islamic State

They're really very devout, committing every atrocity they can find in the Koran and inventing a few more. They fling Allah around with every other sentence, but to hear western pols talk they're not really Moslems....

"During 2023, our Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF), conducted many security operations against the remnants of ISIS terrorist cells, including large-scale operations, and others conducted in coordination and cooperation with the international coalition forces against ISIS," read a statement from the SDF.

The US-backed force carried out 73 military operations against ISIS in the year, arresting 352 "terrorists, suspects, controllers, and collaborators." Six ISIS leaders were also captured, according to the statement.

"Our forces, which have made great sacrifices to eliminate the terrorist organization of ISIS and rid the world of its terrorism, confirm their commitment to continue their moral and national tasks to pursue and eliminate ISIS cells and dry up their sources, However,
nothing needs reforming like other people's bad habits...

The SDF fought the lion’s share of the battle against ISIS in Syria.
