About that Facebook outage yesterday
From The Times of Israel late last night:
Facebook crashes for second time in a week

Social network goes down for 42 minutes ‘due to a configuration issue’

Facebook on Monday stumbled for the second time in a week, going out of service for slightly less than an hour.

The leading social network was down for 42 minutes about mid-day in California and elsewhere, after being out of service for 12 minutes four days earlier, according to website performance tracker.

“We’re currently restoring Facebook services that people had trouble accessing earlier today due to a configuration issue,” Facebook said in an email response to an AFP inquiry.

“We’re working to bring things back to normal for everyone. We apologize to those who have been inconvenienced.”

Facebook did not disclose how many of the social network’s more than one billion users were affected by the outage.

People took to Twitter during the outage, with #facebookdown jumping into a spot among the top trending hashtags at the one-to-many messaging service.
A friend in Germany sent me this link today after complaining yesterday about Facebook suddenly being very slow:

Afghanistan
Gen. Murad: Afghan forces retreated from Kunduz city to prevent civilian casualties
[Khaama (Afghanistan)] The deputy chief of staff of the Afghan National Army (ANA) Gen. Murad Ali Murad said the Afghan cops retreated from Kunduz city to prevent civilian casualties.

Admitting that the security institutions had conflicting information regarding the possible attack on the city, Gen. Murad said the Afghan cops did not fully respond to Taliban attacks as the Lions of Islam have taken positions in residential houses and markets.

He said sufficient forces were present in Kunduz city as the attack was launched and air support became available on time.

The Talibs took full control of the city later this afternoon following hours of heavy festivities with the Afghan cops.

A local security official speaking on the condition of anonymity confirmed that the Talibs have taken control of the central prison along with the intelligence compound and the UN compound, provincial governor office and provincial police headquarter.

The deputy provincial governor Hamidullah Danishi earlier confirmed that half of the city has fallen to Taliban control but the provincial government compound and some other areas are still in control of the security forces.

He said the Afghan cops will hopeful push back the Talibs once additional forces have been deployed.

The Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) International earlier confirmed at least 66 patients including eight dead bodies were shifted to MSF hospital in Kunduz and at least 17 of them were at death's door.

Amnesty International Calls For Protection Of Kunduz Civilians
[Tolo News] Amnesia Amnesty International has called on all parties to the Kunduz battle to ensure civilians are protected in accordance with international law.

In a statement issued late Monday night following 16 hours of heavy fighting in Kunduz city, Amnesia Amnesty International said: "The Taliban and Afghan cops must ensure that civilians are protected in accordance with international law and that nobody is targeted in reprisals against their work."

Heavy fighting
... as opposed to the more usual name-calling or slapsy...
is ongoing in Kunduz after the Taliban launched a major assault on the quiet provincial capital in the early hours of Monday morning. By late afternoon all strategic government buildings and facilities had been seized by the group.

However,
a woman is only as old as she admits...
there are unconfirmed reports of civilian casualties and of the Taliban taking over a public hospital, said Amnesia Amnesty International.

"The Taliban have many times in the past showed their callous disregard for human life and civilians often suffer the brunt of their attacks. As fighting rages in Kunduz, all sides must ensure that civilians and civilian objects are protected according to international humanitarian law, which governs all parties to an armed conflict," said Horia Mosadiq, Amnesia Amnesty International's Afghanistan Researcher.

"Deliberately targeting civilians not directly participating in hostilities, as well as indiscriminate attacks or disproportionate attacks, would amount to war crimes," the organization says.

"The Taliban must not target any civilian simply for their work -- whether they are a journalist, teacher, government official or rights activist -- and must ensure that there are no reprisal attacks against them."

"Reports that the Taliban have already sent armed fighters into a public provincial hospital are extremely worrying. Hospitals are places of sanctuary under international law and their staff must be allowed to do their vital life-saving work without the threat of violence or undue interference."

Security Officials Assure Public Kunduz Will Be Retaken
[Tolo News] High-ranking security officials addressed a late night presser in Kabul
...the capital of Afghanistan. Home to continuous fighting from 1992 to 1996 between the forces of would-be strongman and Pak ISI/Jamaat-e-Islami sock puppet Gulbuddin Hekmayar and the Northern Alliance, a period which won Hek the title Most Evil Man in the World and didn't do much for the reputations of the Northern Alliance guys either....
on Monday and assured the public that everything was being done to safeguard the people of Kunduz city and to retake it from the Taliban.

Kunduz, a key city in the north of Afghanistan, fell to the Taliban on Monday afternoon following over 14 hours of fierce fighting with local security forces.

The bully boys, believed to be in their hundreds, carried out a well-orchestrated and complex attack on the city and took control of strategic government buildings and facilities.

Addressing the public on Monday night, General Murad Ali Murad, commander of the Afghan ground forces said that sufficient reinforcement troops have been deployed to Kunduz.

Deputy Minister of Interior for Security General Ayoub Salangi was also present and said government was doing everything possible to normalize the situation.

He assured the public that troops have surrounded the city and that all necessary measures are being taken to safeguard civilians.

Murad meanwhile said that it has been a strategic tactic by the military not to storm the city because of the civilians. He said that the Taliban has entrenched themselves in residential areas and in the homes of locals.

Asked whether government had received intelligence ahead of time regarding such an attack, Murad said that they had but that the reports had been conflicting.

But he said that everything was being done to restore peace.

The fall of Kunduz comes on the eve of the National Unity Government's one year anniversary in power. It is also the first time in 14 years that a city has fallen to the bully boys.

But the attack, that took place at 3 a.m local time, was massive and well executed. Attacking the city from within its limits, the Taliban also immediately closed off all four entrances into the city -- preventing troops from entering and residents from fleeing.

Mullah Mansoor issues contradictory statement on Kunduz city attack
[Khaama (Afghanistan)] The newly appointed leader of the Taliban group Mullah Akhtar Mohammad Mansoor has issued a statement following a coordinated attack on Kunduz city.

Mullah Mansoor's call to refrain from harming civilians and their properties while ruling out retribution of the babus government employees and security personnel provided that they abandon all negative thoughts, message of peace and full a credit of the fall of the city to Talibs, are some of the important points made in his statement.

However,
it's easy to be generous with someone else's money...
the remarks by Mullah Mansoor comes as the Talibs have been blamed in a series of activities aimed at harming the civilians including an attack on a radio station apparently managed by women.

The attack on Roshani Radio Television by Talibs sparked an outrage after the station was torched following the fall of the city.

NAI Organization which supports open media in Afghanistan strongly condemned the attack on the Radio Station, calling it an evil and brutal act.

The organization expressed deep concerns regarding the security of the media workers and journalists in the city and called on the government to take all necessary measures to ensure their security.

In parts of his state Mullah Mansoor called on the Afghan government to openly admit its failure and stepped forward to rule out the group was supported by any foreign intelligence in coordinating and conducting the attack.

However,
it's easy to be generous with someone else's money...
the security bigshots said the Afghan cops retreated from the city in a bid to prevent civilian casualties.

The deputy chief of the Afghan National Army Gen. Murad Ali Murad appeared in a presser earlier tonight and said the Afghan cops did not fully respond to Taliban attacks as the gunnies have taken positions in residential houses and markets.

Gen. Murad further added that the Afghan cops fully deployed in the outskirts of the city and promised that the control of the city will be taken back from the gunnies soon.

Experts Blame Government For Fall Of Kuduz
[Tolo News] Military experts on Monday blamed the government for not being able to detect such a large-scale and well-orchestrated plot ahead of time -- a plot that led to the collapse of Kunduz city to the Taliban on Monday.

Kunduz is a strategic city that connects the country to Takhar and Badakhshan provinces in the northern parts of Afghanistan.

Military experts also said the recent failure by government to send in reinforcement troops to Kunduz to support the security forces already deployed in the highly volatile area was nothing short of negligence.

The Taliban however sees the fall of Kunduz as a strategic gain for them especially as their so-called fighting season ends within a few weeks as winter approaches.

Security forces have however launched numerous operations in Kunduz in recent weeks to push back the Taliban from the area. Sources say that operations did not yield positive results and that eventually military campaigns were stopped -- without any reasons being given.

"Kunduz was conquered from the inside. It was stated several times that opponents have infiltrated the government," military commentator Atiqullah Amarkhail said.

As conflict in Afghanistan gathers momentum, experts blame the leaders of the National Unity Government for being a key element in the ongoing uncertainty amid their disputes over power distribution.

Monday's attack comes on the eve of the National Unity Government's one year anniversary in power.

"National Unity Government is responsible for this," Amarkhail said, referring to the recent spate of security threats that targeted several regions of the country.

"They [NUG leaders] engaged in a dispute for power for a year, they have done nothing to improve the security in Afghanistan," he said.

Experts also say that the fall of Kunduz could risk the security of neighboring provinces -- especially Takhar and Badakhshan.

"The reluctance of government to fight the opponents in one hand, the strong presence of Taliban on the other, and also the lack of coordination among the security forces and lack of support to security forces has led to the collapse of Kunduz," political analyst Abdul Shokor Salangi said.

Kunduz used to be one of the Taliban's strongholds in the north and northeastern regions during the murderous Moslem group's rule in Afghanistan.

[ALMANAR.LB] Hacktivist group Anonymous have taken down many Soddy Arabia

Ali NimrAl-Nimr was tossed in the clink
Don't shoot, coppers! I'm comin' out!
when he was 17 over his involvement in alleged anti-government activities.

Campaigners have accused the government of targeting al-Nimr only for being the nephew of a prominent campaigner, Sheikh Nimr Baqr al-Nimr, who was sentenced to death for terrorism offences and "waging war on God". Al-Nimr's final appeal to courts was dismissed earlier in September and his sentence of death by crucifixion can now be carried out at any time.

Anonymous issued a video statement to Saudi Arabia on 22 September saying they would "not stand by and watch" as "innocent" Al-Nimr is sentenced to death. The group called on Saudi Arabia to release Al-Nimr, citing reports that he had been denied a lawyer and subjected to torture. According to Reprieve, an anti-death penalty charity, Al-Nimr was also forced to sign a confession in 2012, which was then used to sentence him to death 2014.

"Thousands of people die each year because of the Saudi Arabian government and they will now be punished for their actions," warned Anonymous in the video statement. "We do not forgive, we do not forget. Expect us."

On Saturday (26 September) night, Anonymous announced that all Saudi Arabian government websites would be going offline.

The announcement was accompanied by another video, addressing the fact that the Saudi government had ignored Anonymous' last video and letter directed at them. They said that the Ministry of Justice website had been taken offline a few days ago and that they would continue to do the same to other government websites.

"Since you have ignored our wishes we will now take action for your ignorance," said the video message. "It was not a good idea to anger us, Saudi Arabian government. We hope you listen to us this time and release the young man. You will be treated as a virus and we are the cure."

Independent: Saudi Royal Family Protects VIPs, Lets Ordinary Pilgrims Die
[ALMANAR.LB] An article posted on the British The Independent newspaper on Monday shed the light upon the corruption that has been lately rocking the Saudi royal family, particularly after its brutal aggression on Yemen
...an area of the Arabian Peninsula sometimes mistaken for a country. It is populated by more antagonistic tribes and factions than you can keep track of. Except for a tiny handfull of Jews everthing there is very Islamic...
more than six months ago.

"Why don't they spend some of their oil wealth on making the Hajj safe, rather than wasting it on a cruel and futile war in Yemen?" the author asked.

"Soddy Arabia
...a kingdom taking up the bulk of the Arabian peninsula. Its primary economic activity involves exporting oil and soaking Islamic rubes on the annual hajj pilgrimage. The country supports a large number of princes in whatcha might call princely splendor. When the oil runs out the rest of the world is going to kick sand in the Soddy national face...
began its bombing of Yemen at the end of March. The assault continues. Every UN agency has lit the red light of caution -- Yemen is a humanitarian catastrophe. Firm numbers of dead and maimed are hard to come by. The UN estimates that over 2100 civilians have been killed. That every Yemeni is in danger of death is clear," the article read.

Moreover, it made an analytical revision of the Saudi-US aggression on Yemen, justifying the absence of UN envoy to the attacked country by the deeply American involvement in the killing.

"In the UN Human Rights Council, the Netherlands called for an official investigation of the bombing in Yemen. But Saudi Arabia, with US backing, has preempted the Dutch resolution. The Saudis want the UN to provide technical assistance to the Yemeni authorities that they back. This is a deft maneuver to block any investigation of Saudi atrocities in Yemen. The US has rearmed Saudi Arabia during the carnage. It is implicated in the civilian deaths. No wonder there will be no UN mission to Yemen," it said.

"While the negotiations in Geneva continued and while Yemen burned, two columns of Hajj pilgrims ran into each other in Mina, Saudi Arabia, on the first day of the Id al-Adha...These columns ran into each other because the police blocked off key roads. These roads are intended to manage congestion," the article added.

However,
a lie repeated often enough remains a lie...
trying to find an answer for "Why were these roads blocked?, the author said that early indications suggest that the authorities had closed the roads to facilitate VIP pilgrims.

"So much of Mecca, like Saudi Arabia in general, is designed for the VIP and the VVIP," he noted.

Britain
Corbyn's conspiracy theory: 9/11 attacks were 'manipulated' to make it look like Osama Bin Laden was responsible
[DAILYMAIL.CO.UK] Jeremy Corbyn claimed the 9/11 attacks were 'manipulated' by the West so it could go to war in Afghanistan in an article he wrote 12 years ago, it has emerged today. The Labour leader made the assertions in a number of written pieces where he criticised Tony Blair and George W Bush for using the September 11 attacks in New York to go to war. He claims Osama bin Laden was made to look responsible to facilitate their aims and seemed to endorse conspiracy theories about a 'New World Order'.

Brits fighting with Daesh put on UN sanctions list
[Grauniad] Four British citizens fighting with Daesh militants in Syria are to be subject to UN sanctions in the first such move in a decade. The British government took the drastic step of asking for some of its own citizens to face UN travel bans and asset freezes.

The four are Sally-Anne Jones, a Muslim convert from Chatham who married a Daesh computer hacker; Aqsa Mahmood, a young Glaswegian jihadi bride; Nasser Muthana, from Cardiff and Omar Hussain, from High Wycombe. All four are thought to be based in Raqqa.

The last time such a request was made was when some al-Qaeda operatives were added in 2006. The named Britons cannot travel through any country UN member nation or keep their money in any UN nation, making it more effective than national sanctions.

Europe
Germany Is Taking In 10000 'refugees' Per Day - Border Controls Have No Effect
Link to Google translation.
Authorities are keeping mum on the number of 'refugees' Germany is taking in. According to information leaked by 'security circles' 230000 'refugees' entered Germany between 9/5 and 9/27. 150000 of those entered after the resumption of intentionally ineffective border controls.

By law, any asylum seeker trying to enter Germany from a neighboring country can be rejected at the border without any legal recourse. That this isn't done is proof that the German government is deliberately flooding Germany. There's no other explanation.

If this isn't stopped the net influx for 2015/2016 will amount to 5 Million 'refugees.' That's without taking into account chain migration.

Outrage as French school makes Muslim and Jewish students wear coloured discs
[DAWN] A French school in being probed after it provoked outrage among parents of students in Auxerre, Burgundy for making Moslem and Jewish pupils wear coloured discs around their necks at lunchtime so canteen staff would not serve them pork according to a report on The Telegraph website.

Students, who did not eat pork, at the Piedalloues primary school were ordered by staff to wear red-coloured discs while others, who did not eat meat, were given yellow discs to wear around their necks at lunchtime.

Eighteen of the school's 1,500 pupils were made to wear the discs but the decision was taken back following protests by angry parents and community leaders, who said the move was similar of the yellow stars Jews were forced to wear under the Nazi occupation.

"It's revolting. It reminds you of the darkest times," a local councillor, Malika Ounès was quoted as saying. "Practices like this are not acceptable. No one has the right to impose this on children."

A probe was ordered by the town's Mayor, according to Christian Sautier, director of communications in the mayor's office who added that it was "an isolated, clumsy and unfortunate initiative" that lasted only one day.

He further said that the step had been taken by the canteen staff without informing local authorities.

"When we learned about it, we fell out of our chairs," Sautier said, adding that upon finding out authorities had ended the practise immediately.

Serving non-pork meals to school children is a sensitive issue in La Belle France with Far-Right Nationalist leaders in past having tried to force school canteens from serving non-pork meals to students. La Belle France's former president Nicholas Sarkozy was also among centre-Right leaders to have opposed serving of pork-free options in schools.

Headscarves and other forms of clothing linked to religious observances are banned in state schools and La Belle France had also banned the wearing of full-face Islamic veils in public in 2011.

French Islamist escapee warns 'You'll be hearing about me'
[Telegraph] A Frenchman radicalized in prison has gone on the run after reportedly telling inmates they would "soon be hearing about him". The man, who was in jail for armed and violent robbery, was granted temporary leave of absence from Chauconin-Meaux prison.

He had been allowed out on several previous occasions, but on September 20 did not return, prompting the local prosecutor to issue an “immediate search warrant”.

In a disturbing development, Le Point magazine reported that shortly before disappearing, the unnamed man had told another inmate that they would "soon be hearing about him". A source close to the investigation said that prison authorities had "identified him for his increasingly assiduous religious practice".

French prisons, where unofficial estimates suggest that more than two thirds of inmates are Muslim, are frequently cited as centers of radicalization.

Dominique Many, a lawyer involved involved in several terror cases, said, "A lot of my clients were radicalized in prison. They are very well organized. They know how to protect the weak to draw them into the system. They say you’re their family, and then you’re trapped."

Israel-Palestine-Jordan
Misconception cleared
Israel has made it clear to Russia that it will continue to act in Syria to protect its interests when necessary, and will not coordinate activities such as retaliating to Syrian cross-border fire with Moscow, Defense Minister Moshe Ya'alon said Tuesday.

He spoke a day after Russian President Vladimir Putin expressed "concern" over Israeli strikes in Syria, and two days after IDF artillery units struck two Assad regime artillery positions in response to stray, cross-border Syrian fire that struck the Golan Heights.

During visit to Gaza-border communities, Ya'alon said, "Prime Minister Netanyahu made it clear to president Putin that we are not involved in who will control Syria. Assad or not Assad, we are not entering that discussion at all. But we have interests, and when they are threatened we act, and we will continue to act.

Southeast Asia
Source: Kidnappers were Abu Sayyaf posing as NPA
[PhilStar] The kidnappers of three foreigners and a Filipino woman at a resort last week were reportedly Abu Sayyaf militants who passed themselves off as communist insurgents, a source said yesterday. The source maintained that the hostages are now in Sulu.

He said, "The kidnappers, believed to be local contacts of the Abu Sayyaf, intentionally used New People's Army as their cover to mislead pursuing government troops. They even left a note declaring that they are seeking justice for their commander."

The deception paid off and gave the kidnappers time to escape with their hostages, traversing the coastal areas of Davao Gulf towards Sarangani province while security forces pursued them in the mountains of Davao del Norte and Davao del Sur. Along the way, the kidnappers transferred the hostages to their waiting Abu Sayyaf patrons who brought them to Sulu.

Lt. Gen. Aurelio Baladad said that all leads being pursued in the Davao region have turned out to be false. He also admitted that there were indications that the militants, with their hostages, managed to slip through the military and police land and naval blockade.

of incompetence over the deadly hajj stampede and demanded an investigation of the disaster.

A total of 769 pilgrims including 226 Iranians were killed in the worst tragedy to hit the hajj in a quarter-century.

The number of Iranians still missing after Thursday's tragedy stood at 248, and 27 were being treated for injuries, said the chief of Iran's hajj organization, Said Ohadi, cited by the official IRNA news agency.

Obama, Putin Spar over Syria in Dueling Speeches at UN
[ALMANAR.LB] Russian President Vladimir Putin
...Second and fourth President and sixth of the Russian Federation and the first to remain sober. Putin is credited with bringing political stability and re-establishing something like the rule of law, which occasionally results in somebody dropping dead from polonium poisoning. and his US counterpart Barack Obama
I bowled a 129. It’s like — it was like Special Olympics, or something...
sparred over the crisis in Syria in dueling UN speeches on Monday, each accusing the other of fuelling the carnage.

The Russian urged UN General Assembly members to unite to fight the so-called 'Islamic State
...formerly ISIS or ISIL, depending on your preference. Before that al-Qaeda in Iraq, as shaped by Abu Musab Zarqawi. group and said it would be a disastrous error not to support Syria's sitting president, Bashir al-Assad.

"We must address the problems that we are all facing and create a broad anti-terror coalition," Putin said in his address, his first to the world body in a decade.

It is, he argued, an "enormous mistake to not cooperate with the Syrian group which is fighting the holy warriors face-to-face."

Obama said Washington was ready to work with Russia and even Iran against ISIL terrorists, but took a swipe at them for supporting Assad, whom he dubbed a child-killing tyrant.

Not to be outdone, the Russian leader blamed the rise of violent extremism on the United States' military interventions in Iraq and Libya, which he said unleashed chaos in the Middle East.

Obama took the podium at the UN General Assembly ahead of Putin and hours before the pair were to hold their first meeting in over two years, at roughly 5:00 pm (2100 GMT).

The US president extended a cautious hand to his traditional foes, suggesting they work together to end the bloodshed in Syria.

"The United States is prepared to work with any nation, including Russia and Iran, to resolve the conflict," he said.

But the American leader made clear his opposition to Moscow and Tehran's current policy of arming and supporting Assad.

Rather than a bulwark against jihadist extremism, Obama argued, Assad drives Syrians into the arms of such groups by such acts as dropping "barrel bombs to massacre innocent children."

#2  Obama gives great speeches. Just great. He's better or at least as good as, Lincoln.

Wow, can he talk. And can you remember anything he's ever said, what comes to mind ? What resounding line does this Lincolnesque, thrill up the leg speaker, flood to the Mind? The wit, the candor and the clarity, the sheer intelligence of it all ( and there is a lot of it )

What pithy and deeply compassionate insight do you recall the most from an Obama Speech? And the Nobel Prize, he has been SO inspiring even the Norwegians ( who are hardly a glib or effervescent bunch of speakers themselves ) we mustn't forget the Nobel.

I could listen to Obama's resssounding, dulcet voice for hours and hours.

Tell me your first and finest memories of his wisdom. And then...... get down and give me twenty.

#4  Mr. President, Mr. Secretary General, fellow delegates, ladies and gentlemen: Seventy years after the founding of the United Nations, it is worth reflecting on what, together, the members of this body have helped to achieve.

Out of the ashes of the Second World War, having witnessed the unthinkable power of the atomic age, the United States has worked with many nations in this Assembly to prevent a third world war -- by forging alliances with old adversaries; by supporting the steady emergence of strong democracies accountable to their people instead of any foreign power; and by building an international system that imposes a cost on those who choose conflict over cooperation, an order that recognizes the dignity and equal worth of all people.

Nice words. I'm sure they were well received.

Shia group that holds Turkish workers announces their release
[IraqiNews] The Shia group, which was holding the Turkish workers as hostages, announced their release, noting that the move came after the Turkish government's response to their demands, which included breaking the siege on two towns in Syria.
Earlier in the day:
16 kidnapped Turkish workers appear in video promising their release

[Rudaw] Sixteen Turkish workers kidnapped by masked gunnies east of Baghdad in early September have appeared in an online video promising their release on Sunday.

The news comes days after the UN backed a deal to extricate Syrian villagers under siege from rebels supported by Ankara, Rooters news agency reported.

In the video footage, one of the Turkish workers reads a statement in Arabic and says his captors had treated them well.

It is shown in the video that each worker received a Koran and an envelope containing money from the captors.

The captors claimed they would release the Turkish workers after civilians surrounded by Sunni bandidos Death Eaters in the villages of Kefraya and Al-Foua in northwestern Syria were allowed to leave safely.

On September 2, an Iraqi security official said several masked men entered the construction site of a sports complex and kidnapped the Turkish nationals, who were sleeping at the time.

Recently, two of the 18 kidnapped Turkish workers have been freed in the southern city of Basra in front of their Turkish company's construction site.

The workers were employed by Nurol Insaat, a Turkish construction company, to build a sports compound in the Sadr City district of the Iraqi capital.
