52 dead in Johannesburg apartment block fire
[BBC] At least 52 people have died after a fire broke out in a block of flats in Johannesburg, South African authorities say.

More than 40 others are injured.

Johannesburg authorities say it's unclear what sparked the blaze at the five-storey building in the city centre.

A spokesman for the emergency services, Robert Mulaudzi, told the BBC that firefighters had been able to bring out some of the occupants.

He said the fire had gutted the building, and that the search for other victims was continuing.

A video posted to the platform X, formerly known as Twitter, by Mr Mulaudzi showed fire trucks and ambulances outside the building with burnt out windows.

This breaking news story is being updated and more details will be published shortly. Please refresh the page for the fullest version.

Hurricane Idalia sweeps through Florida, moves to Georgia
[GEO.TV] Idalia charged into Florida, a potent hurricane that unleashed a fierce assault on Wednesday.

The storm triggered dangerous storm surges along the coastline and left thousands without power, marking its relentless path through the southeastern United States. Now, as it advances into Georgia, Idalia has transformed into a tropical storm, still drenching the region with heavy rainfall and prompting concerns about rising waters.

Having hit the area of northwest Florida most intensely affected, officials deemed Idalia and its life-threatening high waters a rare event for the region. The hurricane's Category 3 force upon its early morning landfall near Keaton Beach led to surging waters and gusts reaching 125 mph (201 kph), causing widespread flooding and power outages.

Despite the absence of confirmed deaths, Florida Governor Ron DeSantis remained cautious, acknowledging the potential for the situation to change due to the magnitude of the storm. While first responders and search and rescue teams worked to assist, obstructions like fallen trees and high water slowed their access to remote locations.

Colorado school is forced to let student keep Gadsden flag patch on his bag after teacher ordered him to remove it and said it had 'origins with slavery'
[Daily Mail, where America gets its news] A Colorado school has been forced to let a student keep a Gadsden flag patch on his bag, after a teacher ordered him to remove it.

The 12-year-old boy, named Jaiden, and his mom refused to apologize after he wore the historic Gadsden flag patch to The Vanguard School in Colorado Springs, Colorado, which one staffer claimed was 'disruptive to the classroom environment'.

Now, the school has decided to U-turn on the decision to stop Jaiden from wearing the patch, with his defiance now making him popular amongst his peers.

In a video shared on Twitter, Jaiden said: 'Today was a good day. The kids were really hyped up. They are putting 'don't tread on me' on their locker. Now they like me all of sudden.

'But the teachers on the other hand, I got some dirty looks that's for sure. They are definitely not happy with me.

Knife thugs armed with huge machetes brawl in street in front of crowds of revellers at Notting Hill carnival - nal day 'marred by violence' as eight are stabbed and police officer is sexually assaulted
[Daily Mail, where America gets its news] At least no one was shot!
  • Met Police said eight people were stabbed on the final day of the carnival

  • Shocking photos show men wielding machetes in broad daylight on Monday

  • Read more: Notting Hill carnival revellers URINATED on police officers, Met union chief reveals

The photographer said he found himself 'in the wrong place at the wrong time' and claimed the 'joyful atmosphere turned unexpectedly as an altercation broke out nearby, between two gangs with knives and a machete'.

Separate video footage also emerged today of a gang of youths, one holding a suspected machete, running down a west London street dressed in black and wearing balaclavas amid a violent end to the annual festival.

The Metropolitan Police says it made 308 arrests across Sunday and Monday, as eight people were stabbed on Monday in just a matter of hours, including a 29-year-old man who was taken to hospital in a 'critical' condition.

Police officers were also kicked, punched, spat on, bitten, head-butted and even sexually assaulted - in all, more than 50 officers were assaulted.

The Metropolitan Police Federation, which represents rank-and-file officers, says it is aware of 75 incidents of officers being attacked, branding the incidents 'absolutely disgusting'.

It came as the Conservative Party's London mayoral candidate Susan Hall called for the carnival to be moved and potentially held in a park, saying police 'don't want to be there'.

However, a spokesman for London mayor Sadiq Khan said the event was 'born out of the Caribbean community in north Kensington and Notting Hill' and that this should 'remain its home'.

Ms Hall told LBC: 'It's very upsetting and I'm afraid we have this every single year. It's an incredible thing, the Notting Hill Carnival. I would just say move it. Move it to where it can be policed much better than where it is now.

North Korea fires 2 ballistic missiles 'to send clear message to foes'
[GEO.TV] South Korean military said Wednesday that Kim Pudge Jong-un
...the overweight, pouty-looking hereditary potentate of North Korea. Pudge appears to believe in his own divinity, but has yet to produce any loaves and fishes, so his subjects remain malnourished...
’s North Korea
...hereditary Communist monarchy distinguished by its truculence and periodic acts of violence. Distinguishing features include Songun (Army First) policy, which involves feeding the army before anyone but the Dear Leadership, and Juche, which is Kim Jong Il's personal interpretation of Marxism-Leninism, which he told everybody was brilliant. In 1950 the industrialized North invaded agrarian South Korea. Twenty-one countries of the United Nations eventually contributed to the UN force opposing the invasion, with the United States providing around 90% of the military personnel. Seventy years later the economic results are in and it doesn't look good for Juche...
fired two short-range ballistic missiles into the sea sometime after the United States deployed B-1B bombers for allied military exercises, as the regional tensions rise with Washington assisting friends to prepare to face any possible aggression.

According to Japanese media reports, two missiles landed outside Tokyo’s exclusive economic zone (EEZ) with the defence ministry of the country mentioning only one.

North Korea confirmed the firing of two short-range ballistic missiles as part of a "tactical nuclear strike drill," according to Korean Central News Agency.

KCNA reported Thursday that Pyongyang fired these missiles late Wednesday in a "tactical nuclear strike drill simulating scorched earth strikes at major command centres and operational airfields" across the border in South Korea.

"The missile unit fired two tactical ballistic missiles northeastward at Pyongyang International Airport and correctly carried out its nuclear strike mission through air bursts at a preset altitude of 400 meters above the target island," the media report quoted military's statement.

"The drill is aimed to send a clear message to the enemies," the nuclear-armed country's military said in a statement.

South Korea's Joint Chiefs of Staff said: "Our military has strengthened surveillance and vigilance in preparation for additional provocations, and is maintaining full readiness through close cooperation between Korea and the United States."

Marijuana smokers have very high levels of toxic metals in their blood
[earth.com] Marijuana smokers have significantly higher levels of toxic metals in their blood and urine compared to non-marijuana tobacco users, according to a recent study from Columbia University’s Mailman School of Public Health.

The research, led by Professor Tiffany Sanchez, indicates that marijuana may be an under-recognized source of metal exposure, as it remains illegal at the federal level and therefore unregulated by government agencies.

The study authors say the issue has never been more important as marijuana use in the skyrockets in the United States, with an estimated 42 million regular users.

LEAD AND CADMIUM LEVELS
The researchers compared participants who exclusively used marijuana with non-marijuana tobacco users and found that those who used marijuana had significantly higher lead levels.

Specifically, marijuana smokers users had 27 percent higher levels of lead in their blood and 21 percent higher levels in their urine.

In addition, cannabis users had 22 percent higher cadmium levels in their blood and 18 percent higher levels in their urine compared to non-users.

TOTAL BODY BURDEN
Professor Sanchez and her team predicted that because cannabis is known to accumulate metals, marijuana smokers would have higher metal biomarker levels than those who did not use it.

The study confirmed this prediction, establishing marijuana as a source of cadmium and lead exposure.

"Both cadmium and lead stay in your body for quite a long time," said Professor Sanchez. "Cadmium is absorbed in the renal system and is filtered out to through the kidney. So, when you’re looking at urinary cadmium, that’s a reflection of total body burden, how much you have taken in over a long period of chronic exposure."

Japanese PM eats ‘Fukushima lunch'
Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida has attempted to demonstrate the safety of treated radioactive wastewater released from the Fukushima nuclear power plant by eating a selection of food from the area.

Kishida and three of his cabinet ministers sat down on Wednesday for a lunch at which they ate sashimi made from flounder, octopus, and sea bass all caught off the coast of Fukushima following last week’s wastewater release. They also had a selection of fruit, vegetables, and rice recently harvested in the region.

"This is very good," Kishida told reporters during the meal, calling on people to enjoy "safe and delicious" Japanese seafood and support the northeastern prefecture.

There is, IMO, some sort of cosmic karma in Japan - the first country ever to be attacked by Nuclear bombs - being the one to start the process of abolishing anti-nuclear hysteria manufactored by the western pseudo-educated classes in the last 3 generations.
