DAVID WARREN: Paris in the fall

A cold, heartless person, such as myself, would observe that the death toll in yesterday's terror strikes across Paris aggregated to about one downed airliner. This is certainly news, but not on the scale the media are reporting. The attackers wanted a lot of attention. The media have provided it for them.

... Ditto, the innumerable declarations of "Solidarity with France!" from the preening politicians, all over the world. With all this publicity, they want some for themselves. My compliments to President Obama, who in the course of one of his posturing displays, at least said he had not called President Hollande, guessing the man did not need distractions. ("Those who think they can terrorize France are wrong," he said: the contrary being obviously true.)

...Don't get me wrong; Islamic terrorists should be squashed like bugs. But this should be done as discreetly as possible. Indeed, I don't mind if they are not Islamic: any similar enemy should be dealt with the same. But our publicity is their recruiting device; and in practice, it is the means by which -- in multicultural political correctness -- the Muslim community is accorded ever greater "respect."

...In practice this would not work, however, owing to the law of alliances. ("The enemy of my enemy is my friend.") For the Western liberal, and the Muslim psychopath, have something more deeply to share: opposition to what remains of Christian civilization. The one might promote sexual perversion, the other stone it; the one wants women stripped of their modesty, while the other wants them in sacks; but their respective radicals make common cause on every university campus. It is a matter of indifference to the Devil which tactics to employ. Whatever works. His object is to undermine human decency.

...They wanted publicity. So we gave them publicity. We give them whatever they want.

Wrong. It should be done like a total war. Hold nothing back. They don't give a rat's ass about civilians, neither should you of those they hide behind and among. Then, maybe, like the Germans and Japanese they'll understand doing crap as they did isn't a winning game, as will all their sympathizers. Let the world see the consequences. #4  Also from the essay:

the borders of France were to be sealed as part of a “declaration of urgency” by the President of France, who also put troops in the streets. Though in fact, it was less than two thousand troops, and the borders of France cannot be secured. (Hence the climbdown from the Interior Ministry an hour or two later; the few guarded entry points would instead be “tightened.”)

Column one: Fighting fire with fire
Maybe the EU did us a favor on Wednesday.

At least now we know what we're up against.

With the publication of its new guidelines to member states encouraging them to label Jewish products produced beyond the 1949 armistice lines, the Europeans finally convinced us that they hate us. They don't care about peace. They don't care about the Palestinians. They just want to harm Israel.

This is old news for longtime EU watchers.
EU is pure Tranzi now (whether some pols are called "conservative" and others "left-wing"), and Tranzis are enemies general of humankind---worse, IMO, than Muzzies (because more canning)

Paris attacks: The possible consequences
[AlAhram] The Gay Paree attacks were unprecedented in their scale in La Belle France and shocking in their method. The repercussions are likely to be wide and long-lasting.

Here are five areas to watch:

Peace talks to end the Syrian civil war had drifted along for years before a snowballing refugee crisis in Europe this summer and Russia's dramatic entry into the conflict in September gave them new urgency.

#1  Borders allow LEO's the ability to do checks, at least to the degree allowed by their governments.

Sometimes they get lucky, but more borders = more opportunities to find bad guys. Not that this will ever make sense in D.C.

#3  the playbook for the past 15 years goes like this

1) Islamofascists murder civilians usually shouting allahu akhbar, waving the shehada flag and quoting the koran so we know what they are about

2) First news reports do not mention *islamist* or *muslims*. They refer only to *terrorist*, *gunman*, *suicide bomber* and perhaps in the last line ISIL -- as an acronym only without actually saying the words *Islamic State* as that has the word *islam* in it.

3) The facts are in and the talking heads appear. Non-muslim *experts* are trotted out saying this is a terrible attack by savages but has nothing to do with Islam because the terrorists have no religion.

4) the media starts the talk about *fears of islamophobia* and goes to known Islamists for quotes.

5) Islamists compare their murder of westerners with the war in syria or anything from their grievance list. The spin is - you are racist to care about france because more people die in syria (because of them, but dont mention that)

6) Leftard media parrots this line

7) leftard media develops further argument that islamophobia is what caused the attacks and we should all be nicer to muslims because it is all our fault, white racist xenophobes that we are.

8) The government reads the consensus in the press then donates millions in taxes to muslim groups (some seeded by islamofascists) in order to be more inclusive and combat islamophobia

9) Islamist fascism gets no retaliation. It is rewarded for murdering civilians and now it can spread. They demand blasphemy laws to protect from more Islamophobia. They are praised by famous people. Their numbers grow.

10) one of their followers commits a violent islamofascist attack on civilians and the cycle begins again.

--how to break the cycle --

1) declare war on the caliphate and ban sharia

2) use treason laws on domestic supporters of the caliphate and sharia

3) new migrants get provisional citizenship only. they must sign a declaration rejecting sharia. If they are caught practicing or promoting sharia they are deported. If they are caught committing a violent or sex crime they are deported.

Problem solved.

Who Conducted the Paris Attacks
Assessment of the Paris attacks by Clint Watts of the FPRI blog, including an assessment matrix:
I generally look for four different potential perpetrators and scenarios:

  • An Al Qaeda Central (AQC) or al Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula (AQAP) directed plot from Yemen or potentially Pakistan (AQAP is AQC at this point);

  • An ISIS directed plot from Syria and Iraq;

  • An al Qaeda inspired plot by supporters in the West; or

  • An ISIS inspired plot by supporters in the West, of which there have been several in recent months.

  • There could always be a fifth scenario, a completely unaffiliated different ideological movement that wants to conduct an attack (I call this the Andres Brevik scenario), but I think its not sufficiently likely to warrant analytical effort at this point. ISIS is the likely candidate right now, even based on the limited information that we have as seen in my chart.

Here are some things I'm looking for right now:

  • Planning - This appears to be one of the more well planned attacks. Were there reports of reconnaisance before these attacks?

  • Targets Not Symbolic - The restaurant and the theater attacked don't appear to be particularly symbolic. Al Qaeda directed plots tend to go for spectacular targets, these are not. So I lean ISIS and I wonder, did any of these perpetrators work at these locations or frequent these spots? Is that how they got the idea to hit these locations?

  • A Suicide Bombing? And Several Armed Assaults? - This would be a significant advancement. We would be talking about explosives in the country, assault weapons, lots of planning. The French have a serious problem on their hands.

  • Weapons Training - Early reports suggest these shooters were calm and calculating. That would suggest weapons training and preparation, leading one to look for former foreign fighters from Syria or other theaters.

  • Communications - Al Qaeda did tight control of targeting of attacks with affiliates. I don't believe this is the case with ISIS. In the case of the ISIS Sinai affiliate, I don't have any evidence that ISIS Central in Iraq and Syria directed the airline bombing. Instead, I get the feeling the situation is the reverse, an affiliate or some global supporters and former foreign fighters execute an attack and then communicate back to central command (Baghdadi and top aides) what happened. Will we see that in this case, post attack reports of chatter back to Iraq and Syria?

  • Media Reporting Is Making ISIS Into ONE BIG THING! - I've been really frustrated the past few weeks as news reporting continues to push the theory, without evidence, that ISIS in Iraq and Syria, all affiliates that have pledged to ISIS and all global fanboys of ISIS act in unison under a central command. This was more the case with al Qaeda, but we don't know this to be true of ISIS. Thus, the public is becoming crazed with fears of an all powerful ISIS which is both untrue and unhelpful.

    Terror Networks
Debka (Salt to taste) French President Hollande was prime target
The geography of the six Paris locations targeted by terrorists Friday night points to precise advance planning in support of a primary target, namely, French President Francois Hollande, while at the same time sowing bloody havoc in the French capital, frightening tourists away and shaking the French governing system to the core.

Counterterrorism sources note that the parties who orchestrated the deadliest terrorism attack on any European capital took into account that President Hollande would be attending a friendly French-German football match at the Stade de France, presenting them with a high-quality target for assassination or capture as their hostage.

    Home Front: Culture Wars
This Week in Books - 11/15/15
First, I would like to thank Fred and all the Moderators for the work they do to bring us such a valuable and diverse, educated forum. One of the many reasons I visit is badanov's This Week in Guns, and a convergence of thoughts led me to remember the thread about books. In addition to the news and comments, I believe these are two good topics.

That said, this will be abbreviated as we have chicken potato chowder on the stove and the weather forecast says get my kids outside this afternoon while the coats can hang on the rack.

So mods, if I have this under the wrong topic, please correct me. I do believe that books, and knowledge in general, is under siege.

So before I leave this a bit open, one of the yarns which reminded me of why I liked this topic was to Dune, or not to Dune. I come from a love a history - and that includes writers like Steven Pressfield - with a splattering of Clancy, but it was a same topic thread discussing Heinlein which finally convinced me to read Starship Troopers, and am glad I did.

I have had the chance to read Roger Crowley's three available books - City of Fortune, 1543, and Empires of the Sea - and I would read them in that order if I could do it over. I consider them very well researched, yet still read like an action flick. I am going to put those into my pocket for a later date.

Also, I saw that Sgt. Mom has a new book out, as well as the books from our others such as Fred and badanov. I think that is great.

So before I fall on the side of rambling, and the soup gets cold again (kids are anxious which interrupts blocks of thoughts) I leave a question:

I am looking for a book covering The French and Indian War. I read a book by David Hackett Fischer titled Paul Revere's Ride who mentioned the relative success of the colonial militia was due to the experience learned from that conflict. Somehow the concept of attacks against civilian targets by what might be called irregular troops where it is impossible to post regulars/professional soldiers at all possible targets presents itself as a topic of interest to me, and what lessons may have been forgotten.

Oh, almost forgot, since it is near the anniversary of, Neptune's Inferno by James D. Hornfischer, is an excellent, terrifying account of Guadalcanal. Ship of Ghosts and Last Stand of the Tin Can Soldiers are excellent; I would read them in that order with Neptune's Inferno in between if I could do it again.

I apologize for the lack of links as the ball gloves are coming out and the shoes are on, my time is out. I also apologize in advance, as sometimes I can find myself on a fire truck five minutes in the future, and those things are not scheduled, for not posting, and am not too proud if anyone else wants to carry the flag.
