Ice on Lake Superior on Memorial Day 2014
While the season has passed for most of us and Memorial Day weekend is underway, there are reminders in Michigan's Upper Peninsula of the historically cold and snowy winter.

There's still ice on Lake Superior.

Britain
A kick in the pants that Westminster so richly deserved
[DAILYMAIL.CO.UK] It was, if not an earthquake, a seismic moment in British politics.

For years, the Mail has argued that millions of voters have been disenfranchised by a smug, metropolitan political class united by its determination to ignore their views.

The public's deep concerns over mass immigration, with its devastating impact on housing, hospital services and schools, and the loss of illusory sovereignty to a corrupt, unaccountable Brussels, were dismissed as the ravings of bigots and fanatics.

Caucasus/Russia/Central Asia
Ukrainians in Russia Stay Away from Presidential Polls
[An Nahar] Several hundred Ukrainians voted in the country's presidential election in Moscow on Sunday but the vast majority of their countrymen in the Russian capital stayed away.

Viktor Girzhov, the head of the electoral commission at the Ukrainian embassy, said that 667 people had voted as of 4:00 pm Moscow time (1200 GMT).

That accounts for less than two percent of the Ukrainians registered as living in the Russian capital, Girzhov told a news conference.

"That doesn't seem like many people, but you have to remember that as a rule few Ukrainians vote in Moscow. In the last legislative elections, there were less than 500 participants," Girzhov said.

A total of 26,997 Ukrainians are registered at the Ukrainian consulate, which is a only a small fraction of the estimated 1.6 million Ukrainians living in Russia.

At the doorway to the polling station, Maria was crying silently. A housewife, she had not registered to vote but had hoped to be able to cast her ballot anyway and had even dressed up for the occasion.

"My parents live in eastern Ukraine and they told me this morning that gunnies took them to vote. They were counting on me to vote in the name of our family," she said, refusing to give her surname for fear of reprisals.

Another voter, 42-year-old Lila Sotnik, said her Russian friends had discouraged her from voting.

"They said that it was absolutely pointless," said Sotnik, holding her daughter by the hand.

"At school she is treated like she is a fascist. Our life has become a lot more difficult since the Ukraine crisis began," said Sotnik.

China-Japan-Koreas
Chinese mining baron sentenced to death
BEIJING: A Chinese court on Friday sentenced mining baron Liu Han, who has amassed $6 billion wealth, to death along with his brother, Liu Wei, for ordering mafia-style killings.
"That's the party's job"
Prosecutors told the court Liu Han lived two lives of a philanthropist-businessman and a gang leader. The two were among 36 people accused of organizing, leading and participating in criminal activities including killings.

The tycoon is suspected to have had dealings with Zhou Yongkang, China's powerful former security chief rumoured to be under investigation for corruption. The baron came under the scanner after president Xi Jinping came to power in November 2012.

As authorities cracked down on high-level corruption and ostentatious lifestyles, he was the most obvious target because he showed off his riches routinely.

"With carrots and sticks, Liu Han established absolute authority in the gang," the official Xinhua news agency said. "Blood cleared the path for Liu Han's businesses and surrounded by a cabal of ferocious gangsters, the wealth of Liu snowballed. ... Those who hesitated to kill were expelled." His assets included hundreds of cars, including Rolls-Royces, Bentleys, Ferraris.
All of which no doubt is forfeit to the party.
Police found 20 guns, 677 bullets, 2,163 shotgun cartridges and over 100 knives from his premises, which is unusual because China's gun laws are extremely strict.
Like most places, gun laws are only for the peasants.

China test-flies warplanes first time on highway strip
BEIJING: For the first time, China's air force on Sunday successfully test flew warplanes from a highway strip in central China's Henan Province.

Flight tests of military aircraft including the third generation of warplanes were held on the Zhengzhou-Minquan highway, state-run Xinhua news agency reported.
Common practice in Sweden where it takes a day or more to prepare the road as an air strip. Any central divider is removed to allow use of the full width of the road and the surface is swept of debris. Roads so used are thicker with a concrete base.

I image that sand storms would be a problem in Henan Province.

#2  A bit of trivia. In 1991 when Saddam invaded Kuwait the runways at Ali al Salem airbase quickly became unserviceable due to bombing. A small US contractor for aircraft spares company out of Schaumburg, IL coached the Kuwaiti Air Force into taxiing from the adjacent highway and flying to Prince Sultan Air Base in Saudi [PSAB]. Those Kuwaiti pilots and crews became the vanguard of the assault that recaptured the country.

The contract site lead and man responsible for saving the planes and crew at Ali was an unassuming old retired USMC LTCOL. His heroic exploits were not to end there. He was singularly responsible for a daring, motorized convoy 'escape and evasion' effort that led a number of his employees out of Kuwait City and south across the Saudi border to freedom.

#6  No, on looking this up, the entire Inter-State Hiways as airfields deal is an urban legend. There was talk while the system was being designed and voted on of building airfields on adjacent property, but it never got to design state. That said, I hear word that there are sudden large and bizarrely wide swaths of interstate in Montana and the Dakotas. I suspect exaggeration or graft. :)
Posted by: Shipman || 05/26/2014 16:13 Comments || Top||

#7  Ship, another story I remember from the early '60s was that interstates had certain characteristics in certain areas to facilitate the moving of ICBMs. Maybe that has something to do with the Montana/Dakots.
Posted by: AlanC || 05/26/2014 17:03 Comments || Top||

#8  AC, that part was true. The design clearances were based on the height of the missile transports and was probably a consideration for lane width and turning radius. That was also a factor in the design of the "diamond" interchanges as they could route around a bridge with clearance problems by using the exit and entrance ramps. Having sufficient tires and spacing spreads the load and the traffic count for missile transports would be pretty low.

China fighters in 'dangerous' brush with Japanese planes
Tokyo -- Japan on Sunday accused China of "dangerous" manoeuvres above disputed areas of the East China Sea, saying a Chinese fighter flew within roughly 30 metres (100 feet) of a Japanese military aircraft.

A defence ministry spokesman said a Chinese Su-27 jet on Saturday flew close to a Japanese OP-3C surveillance plane above the waters where the countries' air defence identification zones overlap. Another Chinese SU-27 fighter also flew close to a Japanese YS-11EB plane in the same airspace, the ministry said.

One fighter jet approached to within about 50 metres and the other was as close as 30 metres to the Japanese planes, according to the spokesman.

Relations between Japan and China are strained by a territorial dispute over Tokyo-controlled islands in the East China Sea. Beijing raised regional tensions in November by declaring an air defence identification zone covering the area, which overlaps a similar Japanese zone.

"They were dangerous acts that could lead to an accident," Japanese Defence Minister Itsunori Onodera told reporters on Sunday. "The Japanese crew reported that the fighters were flying with missiles, which raised the tension as they handled the situation."

Tokyo protested to Beijing over the incident through diplomatic channels, he said.

The Chinese fighters did not enter the Japanese zone, according to the Asahi Shimbun daily.

The two Japanese aircraft were monitoring a joint naval drill by China and Russia in the northern East China Sea near Japanese territorial waters, Kyodo News said.

China's defence ministry said two Japanese planes entered China's air defence identification zone on Saturday, "interfering with joint naval exercises between China and Russia" for which a "no fly" notice had been issued.

Chinese aircraft were scrambled to "identify and take protective measures" against the Japanese planes, the ministry said in a statement on its website. China has made representations to Japan asking it to "respect the legitimate rights of the Chinese and Russian navy", it said.

China and Russia started joint naval exercises on Tuesday as their leaders promised to strengthen relations in the face of international criticism over their territorial disputes. The exercises ended on Sunday.

#1  After a PeopleÂ’s Liberation Army (PLA) naval F-8 fighter smacked into a U.S. Navy EP-3 reconnaissance plane in 2001 the reconnaissance flight's were resumed but this time with a fighter escort.

Japan would be well advised to do the same. In fact, every Chinese aircraft entering the disputed area should be met with a fighter "escort". Two can play at being a pr*ck belligerent.

Europe
Political Earthquake in France as Far Right Triumphs in EU Vote
[An Nahar] La Belle France suffered a political earthquake on Sunday as the far-right National Front topped the polls in European elections with an unprecedented haul of one in every four votes cast, exit polls indicated.

Average results from five polling institutes pointed to the anti-immigration, anti-EU party led by Marine Le Pen taking 24-25 percent of the popular vote and around a third, or 23-25, of La Belle France's 74 seats in the European Parliament.

The mainstream right Union for a Popular Movement was beaten into second place with a projected 20-21 percent score and the ruling Socialist Party was left languishing in third place with just 14-15 percent.

The result is the highest score ever obtained in a nationwide election by the FN and follows breakthrough gains made by the once pariah party in municipal elections earlier in the year.

"It is a historic score. We are now the first party in La Belle France," FN vice-president Florian Philippot declared as the exit polls were published while senior Socialist minister Segolene Royal acknowledged that the far right's success represented "a shock on a global scale."

Le Pen, who has been credited with significantly broadening the appeal of a party founded by her father Jean-Marie Le Pen, said voters had demonstrated their desire to "reclaim the reins of their own destiny."

"Our people demand only one type of politics - a politics of the French, for the French and with the French."

"They have said they no longer want to be ruled from outside, to have to submit to laws they did not vote for or to obey (EU) commissioners who are not subject to the legitimacy of universal suffrage."

#5  Getting rid of Muzzie imms. is a given, but what about Jews?

Besoeker posted an article not long ago about how emigration rates to Israel are up significantly. Any other emigration is no doubt recorded by the receiving countries as French rather than religious, AlanC.

A quick google reveals that the Jewish population of France in 2001 was somewhere in the range of 600,000-750,000; as far as I can tell, the larger number includes those self-identified but unaffiliated with the community. Three hundred thousand of them were immigrants from North Africa -- Algeria, Morocco, and Tunisia.

Today the Jewish population is given as 480,000-600,000, a significant drop, and a quarter say they would like to leave. I suspect the proportion that are from North Africa has increased due to proportionally more native French deaths and immigrant births. The native French Jews are wealthier, I believe, and therefore better able to afford emigration, but also less likely to adjust to a new situation well, so I have no idea how emigration has affected the ratio. Certainly, of those who moved to Israel, not all stayed permanently.

Obama Hails 'Courageous' Ukrainian Voters
[An Nahar] U.S. President Barack Obama
If you like your coverage you can keep it...
hailed "courageous" Ukrainians who went to the polls Sunday in a presidential vote that Washington and the West hope will bring stability back to the country after months of turmoil.

"Despite provocations and violence, millions of Ukrainians went to the polls throughout the country," the White House quoted Obama as saying.

"Even in parts of eastern Ukraine, where Russian-backed separatist groups sought to disenfranchise entire regions, some courageous Ukrainians still were able to cast their ballots," he added.

"We commend the resolve of all those who participated, as well as the efforts of the Ukrainian government to conduct these elections in the face of those threats."

Chocolate baron Petro Poroshenko, a 48-year-old self-made billionaire, has claimed victory in the election, which comes amid a pro-Russian insurgency that thwarted voting across much of the separatist east.

Flemish Separatists Set for Victory in Key Belgium Election
The Phlegms are about to divorce the Balloons...
[An Nahar] Belgium's controversial Phlegmish separatists looked set to take the lead in a general election Sunday marred by an attack against the Jewish Museum in Brussels, the first such incident in 30 years.

First estimates gave 33 percent of the vote in Flanders to the New Phlegmish Alliance (N-VA) headed by tough-talking Antwerp mayor Bart De Wever.

With Flanders in the north accounting for 60 percent of Belgium's population of 11 million, the result, if confirmed, would see the NV-A become the biggest party in the language-divided nation.

"Vicit vim virtus", De Wever told supporters in Latin -- meaning "Courage overcame violence."

The French-speaking Socialists from southern Wallonia, headed by incumbent premier Elio Di Rupo, scored just over 30 percent.

However,
if you can't say something nice about a person some juicy gossip will go well...
De Wever's lead may prove to be too small to enable him to form a regional government in northern Flanders, while at the federal level he may find it difficult to find allies to join a coalition.

Belgium has no national political parties, with the current federal coalition government made up of groups from both sides of its invisible but very real linguistic border.

According to tradition, it will be up to King Philip to ask the leader of Sunday's winning party to form a government. It will his first election as king, having come to the throne only last year.

All eyes were on the N-VA showing in the election, the first since an inconclusive 2010 ballot left the divided country without a government for a world record 541 days.

The 2010-2011 deadlock was largely due to the N-VA's refusal to agree a coalition deal with other parties because of its demands for more devolution -- and ultimately its wish to separate Flanders from the rest of Belgium.

#1  The tribalists continue to win.

#2  The idiot socialists don't understand real history as their only beings with Marx in the 19th Century. Nationalism is the counter to tribalism, not 'internationalism'. Undermine national identity and you slide back to the previous loyalties. Their case isn't helped by their insistence of using identity politics that promotes that very tribalism.

#3  The only justification behind merging people into larger groups is security; i.e. more of us can put up a better fight. These groups all now feel that the EU will protect them, so the rationale collapses (not a demonstrated fact).
Coming soon: Germanic princedoms and Greek city-states. Because, you know, if it was a good idea from a few hundred to a couple of thousand years ago, it's bound to be a good idea now.
If the Russians and/or Chinese can just be patient, this could be a walk through.

#4  The interesting possibilities are endless. The EU is rapidly becoming the Holy Roman Empire V2.0.

The principalities and city states and petty kingdoms will proliferate till the bureaucratic inertia becomes overwhelming.

Which of these petite "sovereignties" become the first to break away? What of those caught between the neo-Russian empire and the EU?

When does the caliphate reform, and with what effect?

Interesting times indeed.

What's your take on Quebec separatism, mon ami?

99.9% of the amerikan idiots who post here would be in total agreement in making English the only official language of the United States to counter the false-flag Mexican invasion.

"amerikan" with a 'k'. How... 1970s.

I have no problem with English as an official language, for the same reason international aviation uses it.

That cultural approach to immigration also worked relatively well from the 1820s until recently. It's also still a reason that when the US economy gets the sniffles, Canada gets a cold.

A final question: do they inject Canadians with a smugness/insecurity virus combination at birth? Or is it something in the water in Ontario?

#8  In the 2000 census, one of five Americans spoke a second language in the home. Not asked was how many in the Southwestern states, California, southern Florida, and Cincinnati, Ohio speak Spanish not at home but in the streets, and how many in New York City speak Russian, Chinese or Yiddish ditto...

No doubt the numbers were higher in the 2010 census; I haven't had occasion to look it up. I do know that in my daughters' public high school in an outer suburb in the middle of the American Midwest, the English As A Second Language program caters to 72 different languages. The top three languages by population are Spanish, Vietnamese and, oddly enough, Arabic.

In such a society, a single language common to all is necessary, Mr. Jerkface Killa. You Canadians, with your small population of French speakers and even fewer natives, are pikers.

Poroshenko claims Ukraine presidency
[BBC] Ukrainian confectionery tycoon Petro Poroshenko has claimed outright victory in the country's presidential election.

Mr Poroshenko, known as the "chocolate king", won more than 55% of the vote in the first round, exit polls suggest.

Announcing he had won, the 48-year-old businessman promised to forge closer links with the EU and restore peace in restive eastern regions.

Pro-Russian separatists severely disrupted voting there. Some 20 people have died in fighting in recent days.

No polling stations were open in Donetsk city, and across the region only seven out of 12 district electoral commissions were operating. The separatists are in control of large areas of the Donestk and Luhansk regions.

Four hours before polls closed, at 16:00 (13:00 GMT), unofficial estimates put the turnout nationwide at 45%.

Addressing supporters in Kiev, Mr Poroshenko said he would support a parliamentary election later this year.

He also said he would never recognise Russia's Crimean Anschluss, annexed by Moscow in March. Asked about relations with Russia, he said the "sovereignty and territorial integrity" of Ukraine mattered most to him.

Pentagon to close 21 facilities in Europe
The Pentagon announced Friday it was closing down 21 military facilities in Europe, a move the Department said would save $60 million annually. The closures were part of a previously-announced effort, but the decision was somewhat unexpected in light of U.S. attempts to reassure European allies in the wake of Russia's annexation of Crimea.

The closures are comprised mostly of recreational and housing facilities at U.S. and NATO military bases across Europe, such as a skeet shooting range, a hotel and a golf course. But some munitions storage facilities will also be shuttered.

"This is about making sure we have the right footprint, the right posture, and frankly that we're spending taxpayer dollars the right way in Europe," Pentagon Press Secretary Navy Rear Adm. John Kirby said at a press briefing Friday.

Kirby said it is just the first round of such closures, which are taking place in Germany, Italy, Denmark, Greece, the United Kingdom, and Belgium, and that more would follow.
Looks like the Fighting 515th Belgian Heavy Barbers will have to get along without us...
"It's all part of a larger process of consolidating our posture there in Europe, and putting our people and our facilities in the most efficient places in the most efficient manner," he said.

Lawmakers and some defense experts have criticized the Pentagon for pulling several combat brigades out of Europe over the past year, a move that they say renders the United States less able to protect allies in the face of resurgent Russian aggression.
Do our allies want to be protected? I see no signs of any of our NATO allies, save Poland and Estonia, doing anything to protect themselves.

#5  Besoeker,

I spent two vacations at the Chiemsee hotel.

Fabulous place.

I remember they closed it because they were under orders to put in a fire protection system and they couldn't afford it.

Yes, there was great art in every room, alcove, corner, and hallway in the place.

Our rooms were full of antiques and beautiful rugs.

Pretty soon Champ is going to realize the exponential costs of Obamacare and the health insurance bailout (told you so) cannot be paid by closing down the military.

India-Pakistan
Army man's killing suspect shot dead by police
[DAWN] A Pakistain army soldier was killed while resisting a mugging in Orangi Town on Saturday hours before one of the suspected armed bandidos was rubbed out by area police in a shootout, officials said.

They said 32-year-old Sajid Khan was attacked by four men riding two cycle of violences in Sector 4-F when he resisted the mugging. He was hit by multiple bullets and died while being moved to the Abbasi Shaheed Hospital.

"The victim was a Pakistain army soldier posted in Okara," said Inspector Fasih-uz-Zaman, the SHO of the Pirabad cop shoppe. "He was talking on his cellphone near Japani Gali in Sector 4-F when four men on two motorbikes emerged there and stopped close to him. Two of them got off the motorbike, pulled out a pistol and snatched his cellphone." Sajid challenged the bandidos and after a scuffle, he said, one of the bandidos fired shots which hit him and proved fatal. The body was handed over to the family after medico-legal formalities at the ASH.

"After the incident the police pursued the investigation on a faster pace and gathered relevant details according to the statements of eyewitnesses," he said. "The police cordoned off the area, raided several places and finally spotted three suspects on a motorbike in Sector 4-F. When the police tried to stop them, they fired shots at the police mobile, which triggered a shootout."

He said one of the suspects was rubbed out. He said the suspect was identified by at least three eyewitnesses.

Thai coup leader warns against protests
[Dhaka Tribune] General Prayuth Chan-ocha also defended the detentions of dozens of politicians and activists, most of them associated with the ousted government, with a front man quoting him as saying that the measure would not last more than a week and was allowed by law, reported AP.

In a chilling move apparently aimed at neutralising critics and potential opposition, the junta has also ordered dozens of outspoken activists, academics and journalists to surrender themselves to military authorities, including a prominent Thai news hound.

Pravit Rojanaphruk, an outspoken columnist for the English-language daily The Nation, tweeted that he was reporting to the junta: "On my way to see the new dictator of Thailand. Hopefully the last," he wrote.

3 Gunmen Kill Civilian, Rob Conscript in Bekaa's Maqneh
[An Nahar] Three gunnies rubbed out a man and robbed an army conscript in the Bekaa on Sunday before fleeing to an unknown destination.

"Three unknown gunnies riding in a Mercedes car shot up Mohammed Abbas Talal Shqeir and the bullets hit his head," state-run National News Agency reported.

Shqeir succumbed to his wounds at the Dar al-Hikma Hospital in Baalbek, NNA added.

The shooters' car then "overturned due to excessive speed and collided into a sand hill on the road of the (Bekaa) town of Maqneh," said the agency.

"They left the vehicle and intercepted a car driven by A. Y., who was accompanied by his son Ali, an army conscript," NNA added.

The gunnies robbed the conscript of his wallet, which contained his military ID before fleeing towards Maqneh on foot, according to the agency.

"A military ID carrying the name of K. M. M. and a vehicle registration document with the name of S. I. A." were found in the gunnies's car, NNA said.

Condi Rice and the Graduation Gag Order
[Real Clear Politics] It's unfair to the vast majority of U.S. college communities that held heartening graduation exercises this spring, but the 2014 graduation season will be remembered for the anti-intellectual thuggery that marred ceremonies at various Eastern schools.

Brandeis University began the ignominious parade by disinviting Somali feminist Ayaan Hirsi Ali, a critic of Islam, to speak at its commencement after Mohammedan students complained. The administration also rescinded its honorary degree--an award Ali never requested--and then, to justify its capitulation, publicly denigrated her.

"What was initially intended as an honor," she noted drily, "has now devolved into a moment of shaming."

#3  The source article actually has Sen. Sanders saying: "SANDERS: We know that people die every day. We don't know why they die."
And if Sanders has his way, we will never know why those particular veterans died, nor will we do anything to improve the situation. And he will continue to collect his bennies and ultimely draw his monstrous pension.

Separately staffed, no waiting, always on call while uniform military were getting cut rate service (created by the very same congresscritter who ignored DoD budget requests to do otherwise in the years prior). If they had to go to the local VA you bet that their part of the building wouldn't look like what the rest of the peons got.
