Taliban kidnap 11 from helicopter in Afghanistan
A Turkish transport helicopter carrying at least 11 civilians was forced to make an emergency landing in a Taliban-controlled area in eastern Afghanistan, and the insurgents took all the people on board prisoner, including eight Turks and a Russian, officials said on Monday.

The civilian aircraft landed in strong winds and heavy rain on Sunday in the village of Dahra Mangal in the Azra district of Logar province, southeast of Kabul, District Governor Hamidullah Hamid told The Associated Press.

He said the helicopter came down in a gorge in the densely forested region, known for narrow gorges and rugged mountains, about 20 kilometers (12 miles) from the Pakistani border.

The Taliban fighters then captured everyone aboard the helicopter and took them away, Hamid said.

In a telephone interview, Arsala Jamal, the Logar provincial governor, identified the prisoners as eight Turks, one Afghan translator and two foreign pilots of unknown nationality.

In Ankara, a spokesman at Turkey's Foreign Ministry confirmed that eight Turks were aboard the helicopter but had no information on their condition or what had happened to them after the emergency landing. The official spoke on condition of anonymity in keeping with ministry regulations.

Six Afghan policemen Killed in 'Insider Attack'
[An Nahar] Six Afghan police were killed Sunday in a Taliban raid helped by an "insider," officials said, the latest attack involving Western-trained security forces turning on their own allies.

Militants stormed a police post in Deh Yak district of central Ghazni province and killed the six officers as they slept, an official said.

"One of the police who had links with the Taliban let them into the post while other police were sleeping. The Taliban were led to the post and killed six police," district chief, Fazul Ahmad Tolwak told Agence La Belle France Presse.

"The police who led the Taliban into the post joined the Taliban after the attack and went with them."

He said one officer was maimed but survived the attack. Another police officer was locked away
Maw! They're comin' to get me, Maw!
over suspected links to the attack and was being investigated, he said.

Fazul Sabawoon, a front man for the Ghazni provincial administration also confirmed the incident and said six officers, part of the Afghan Local Police, a U.S.-funded community force, were killed in the pre-dawn raid.

He also blamed an "insider" for the attack.

Salafist students released on bail after Mansoura University clashes
[Al Ahram] Members of the Ahrar movement, followers of popular Salafist preacher Hazem Salah Abu-Ismail, have been released on bail.

They were placed in durance vile
Maw! They're comin' to get me, Maw!
during violent festivities at Mansoura University earlier this month.

Clashes erupted during a protest against the university administration after a student was hit by a car and killed.

Some students, reportedly belonging to Ahrar, attempted to barricade the university building in a move that was opposed by other students and led to the festivities. Ahrar members from outside the university joined the fighting.

Eighteen members of the movement were arrested and bail was set at LE1000, according to Al-Ahram Arabic news website.

2 'Qaida' Militants Dead in Yemen Drone Raid
[An Nahar] A suspected U.S. drone strike in Yemen killed two al-Qaeda Death Eaters and destroyed an arms cache on Sunday, a security official and witnesses said.

The raid targeted a house in Wadi Abida, in the central province of Marib, where the two unnamed Death Eaters were killed, the official said.

He said an arms cache in the house also went kaboom!.

Witnesses said an unmanned drone conducted the air raid, just like in most U.S. air strikes that target al-Qaeda suspects in the Arabian Peninsula nation, which is home to al-Qaeda's most active branch.

Al-Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula is led by Nasser al-Wuhayshi.

In July 2011, he reaffirmed AQAP's allegiance to Ayman al-Zawahiri
... Formerly second in command of al-Qaeda, now the head cheese, occasionally described as the real brains of the outfit. Formerly the Mister Big of Egyptian Islamic Jihad. Bumped off Abdullah Azzam with a car boom in the course of one of their little disputes. Is thought to have composed bin Laden's fatwa entitled World Islamic Front Against Jews and Crusaders. Currently residing in the North Wazoo area. That is not a horn growing from the middle of his forehead, but a prayer bump, attesting to how devout he is...
, head of the worldwide al-Qaeda network since the killing of its founder, the late Osama bin Laden
... who is now neither a strong horse nor a weak horse, but a dead horse...

Arrests made in Canadian terror plot
Several arrests have apparently been made following an RCMP counter-terrorism investigation in Ontario. No details have yet been released, but Toronto community leaders have been invited to a briefing. The arrests relate to a terror plot in Canada.

The 2:30 p.m. background briefing was to be followed by a news conference near Toronto's Pearson airport. In recent years, police have made a point of briefing community leaders before announcing terror arrests.

The arrests come at a time of heightened public concern over terrorism following the bombings in Boston as well as recent revelations over the involvement of radicalized Canadian youths in overseas terrorist groups.

Badly Wounded Boston Marathon Bombing Suspect Responding To Questions
Just the new information in a long article.
[NBCnews] Despite a serious throat wound preventing him from speaking, the surviving Boston Marathon bombing suspect is beginning to respond to questions from Sherlocks, federal officials tell NBC News.

Nearly 48 hours after he was taken into custody following an intense shootout and manhunt, Dzhokhar Tsarnaev, 19, was communicating with a special team of federal Sherlocks at Beth Israel Deaconess Hospital. He was responding to questions mostly in writing because of the throat wound, according to the officials, who spoke on condition of anonymity. The suspect remains at death's door.
And the blessing of non-news from London:
About 36,000 runners participated in the London Marathon on Sunday amid heightened security, many of them wearing black ribbons to commemorate the victims in Boston or carrying "For Boston" signs.
No bombs, no shootings, no terror. Whether nobody had thought to do anything, or the security was just that good, let us be glad nothing happened that ought not have done.

#8  The Modern Liberal Proffesor Incarnate:

City University of New York Professor Ruth O'Brien complains in an op-ed that "too much force" had been used against Boston Marathon bomber Tamerlan Tsarnaev, who was killed by the police.
She writes:
Now we have captured the two terrorists from Chechnya who come from the troubled region that is Muslim, but we cannot understand their motives, not yet. And Obama encourages us to refrain.
This said, the mortuary pictures of the older brother of the two are extremely disturbing, raising questions as to whether the Boston Police Department captured him with too much force. I understand the explanation offered by Katharine Q. Seelye, William H. Rashbaum, and Michael Cooper. Yet, it does not ring true. A picture is worth a thousand words that will keep our ears ringing as we recoil from this photo. Images have a way of searing themselves into our memory in a way that can’t be undone. We have an emotional memory, not just a rational one that is exemplified by words.
While terrorism is about causing fear — again an emotion — we do have to account for our conduct in these extreme times when adrenaline is running high.
At my home, to at least offset this, we turn off all media. I couldn’t believe my sons’ explanation when they got home about one brother running over the other one. So I found a place to read about this, and I recoiled after seeing the picture. Still, we all know that terrorism, like crime, “leads if it bleeds” with the established media. The established media fixates on the domestic-violence or crime-of-passion aspect of terrorism, and it, too, inculcates more fear in all of us.
She has no clue as to what the real world is about. Most Terrorists dould rather die than be captured.

At least one of the three young people, one of the two young ladies, who were murdered in the Boston blast was reportedly blown to bits, with police and bystanders found wiping innards and blood from their clothing. Very reminiscent of Afghanistan.

Owners of 'Terrorista #1' BMW taken into custody over Boston bombings
[DAILYMAIL.CO.UK] The two men who own a BMW with the license plate 'Terrorista #1' and who are said to be friends with the younger Boston bombing suspect were taken into custody again on Saturday.

This time the two foreign nationals were placed in durance vile
Yez got nuttin' on me, coppers! Nuttin'!
over alleged immigration violations in the Massachusetts town, New Bedford, where police say the surviving suspect, Dzhokhar Tsarnaev, may have once lived.

The students, named by neighbours by their first names Azmat and Diaz, drive a black BMW 330XI with the personalised plate and a sticker on the back which reads: 'F*** you, you f****** f****'.

They are thought to be from Kazakhstan and had not been seen since the bombings until Friday night when their ground floor apartment in New Bedford, MA, was raided by a dozen FBI agents at gunpoint.

One of their girlfriends was also arrested on Friday. All three are in their late teens or early 20s.

The three were subsequently released on Friday night before Saturday's arrest of the two men.

Their apartment was raided because police say the younger Boston Marathon bombing suspect, 19-year-old Dzhokhar Tsarnaev, may have lived at their address.

MailOnline has discovered another link - Dzhokhar Tweeted pictures of the car on his Twitter account J_tsar.

In one picture the BMW is next to another dark coloured sports car with the caption: 'Place your bets' as if they are about to race.

In another a group of boys stand by both vehicles and a youth can be seen making a gesture that looks like a gun towards the camera.

The three arrests took place at the Hidden Brook housing complex in New Bedford.

A neighbour claimed that the men had said the BMW was stolen or that they claimed they had rented it and were not paying the rental fee.

Very common in Atlanta, along with running up the mileage then abandonment, whilst reporting stolen.

#4  "Brothers Tsarnaev weren't alone, + may had been part of a group per the Boston Marathon booms."

I'd seem worth investigating since:
1. Unlikely the pair was operating without a support network.
2. Brothers had a background in accounting and nursing--not engineering, chemistry, etc. It would seem they received bomb-making training, explosives, and detonators somewhere.
3. Russians warned us about the older brother (although the Russian warnings ought to be taken with salt).
4. Older brother was out of the country for 6 months.
5. When, where, and by whom did radicalization occur?

#5  Dzhokhar posted: "Ain't no love in the heart of the city, stay safe people." What people is he referring to?
Posted by: JohnQC || 04/22/2013 8:50 Comments || Top||

#6  We now know that the explosives used were probably non-military. We know that pressure cookers were used, which are a signature Taliban IED tactic. We have seen a small circuit board and a battery which were recovered from the blast site.

We do NOT know what specific type of detonator (blasting cap) was used. Was it a commercial grade, military, or homemade. Along with a lot of other information, the type of detonator(s) used should now be available from the FBI lags in Quantico, VA.

#7  Kicking it up a notch; the late brother Tsarnaev would have been an Absolut [pun intended] prime-time recruitment for US Intelligence. Imagine, a non-US citizen, smart, young, penniless, Islamic motivated, web savvy, well connected within the local Boston Chechen community. He had family in Russian and liked to travel. Possessing capability to provide useful reporting for pass-back to Russian intelligence.

Recruited source? If not, why not ?

#8  "Ain't no love in the heart of the city, stay safe people." What people is he referring to?
Perhaps this statement had no literal meaning, but was a pre-arranged code to his co-conspirators. Like Radio Londres broadcasting "Blessent mon cœur d'une langeur monotone" on D-Day. Set up ahead of time & used as a signal known only to the initiated.

21 pro-Musharraf 'rioters' sent to lock-up
[Dawn] An anti-terrorism court on Saturday remanded 21 suspects in police custody in a rioting case for one week.

The police had tossed in the clink
Yez got nuttin' on me, coppers! Nuttin'!
them on Friday for allegedly staging a violent protest near Tariq Road against the arrest of retired Gen Pervez Perv Musharraf
... former dictator of Pakistain, who was less dictatorial and corrupt than any Pak civilian government to date ...
Suspects Syed Wasiuddin, Ahsan Memon, Mohammad Shahid, Mohammad Iqbal, Bilal, Khurram, Moshin and others were brought to the anti-terrorism court on Saturday for remand.

However,
ars longa, vita brevis...
after going through the documents, special public prosecutor Abdul Maroof directed the investigating officer to produce them before the court of the judicial magistrate concerned since the offences did not fall under relevant section of the Anti-Terrorism Act (ATA).

But a prosecutor at the magistrate's court also refused to produce the suspects before the court for remand and passed on the matter to his superiors.

Eventually, the suspects were produced before Judge Ghulam Mustafa Memon of the ATC-III for remand and he handed them over to the police on seven-day physical remand.

PTI, JI poll offices attacked
[Dawn] With the election campaign by political parties yet to gain momentum amid fears, an election camp and an office of two parties were set on fire on Saturday further adversely affecting the electioneering pace and raising security concerns among contesting candidates, officials and party sources said.

In the early hours of the day, an election camp of the Pakistain Tehrik-e-Insaf
...a political party in Pakistan. PTI was founded by former Pakistani cricket captain and philanthropist Imran Khan. The party's slogan is Justice, Humanity and Self Esteem, each of which is open to widely divergent interpretations....
(PTI) in Sector 11-E near UP Mor was ransacked before being set on fire.

"The suspects bravely ran away after executing the job," said a police officer. "Area people and party workers said the myrmidons also fired shots into the air though we did not find any sign. More police force has been deployed in the affected part of the area."

As the police expressed ignorance about the people and their motive for the arson attack, the PTI leaders said undemocratic forces wanted to keep their party from election campaigning mainly in Bloody Karachi
...formerly the capital of Pakistain, now merely its most important port and financial center. It is among the largest cities in the world, with a population of 18 million, most of whom hate each other and many of whom are armed and dangerous...
"We know very well and have the capacity to respond to such cowardly acts," said Jamal Siddiq, the PTI media coordinator. "But we believe in democratic norms which demand policy of co-existence.

The camp set on fire was actually a part of PTI Tabdeeli Razakar Camp (camp of volunteers for change) and a large number of Karachi youngsters are turning up at these camps to contribute for the change approaching."

In every Karachi town, he said, the PTI had set up at least two such camps where it had registered hundreds of youngsters for "being a part of change". He ruled out any review in the strategy after the arson attack.

"Our morale is high and we are determined to continue our peaceful struggle, which has received enormous response from Karachiites. We are not removing any camp in any part of the city," said Mr Siddiqi.

While the police were yet to register an FIR of the attack, the 'myrmidons' struck again and this time a Jamaat-e-Islami

(JI) election camp in Nazimabad was the target.

"Early in the morning the JI election office in Nazimabad No 2 was attacked when no one was there," said SSP central Amir Farooqi. "The myrmidons ransacked the office and also tried to set it on fire.

The camp office was set up temporarily in a shop that was once used as a barber's shop. The police are busy assessing loss before registering the case," the SSP said.

In a statement, the JI condemned the incident and said the caretaker administration seemed powerless to maintain law and order in the city. The situation had raised doubts over peace on polling day, the party said, seeking immediate arrest of the 'myrmidons'.

Iraq
37 pilgrims sent back from Baghdad
[Dawn] Around 37 pilgrims -- two of them children -- braved a test of their lives during which they spent 26 hours in detention in Iraq and then interrogation by the FIA after finally making it back to Pakistain.

Despite having completed all the legal formalities, the pilgrims were not allowed to enter the country by Iraqi immigration authorities.

After more than a day of detention, they were sent back to Pakistain, wrung out and hungry, only to be put through another four-hour detention at the Bloody Karachi
...formerly the capital of Pakistain, now merely its most important port and financial center. It is among the largest cities in the world, with a population of 18 million, most of whom hate each other and many of whom are armed and dangerous...
airport's immigration counter.

The group included 14 women, 21 men and two toddlers aged one and two-and-a-half years.

The elderly person in the group was 75 and one was a cancer patient.

"We departed from Karachi at about 2:40 am on Thursday in a transit flight of Fly Dubai for Iraq.

We stayed for ten hours in Dubai before leaving for Storied Baghdad
...located along the Tigris River, founded in the 8th century, home of the Abbasid Caliphate...
and reached there at around 3:30 pm Iraq local time," said Aale Raza, the tour operator who was leading the caravan intending to visit three sacred cities of Kazmain, Karbala and Najaf.

"The Iraqi officials held us for two hours at the immigration counter. After that they asked us to pick up our luggage. They took us to a so-called room, which was actually a part of the hallway for passengers, and asked us to stay here. The room was small and partitioned by a wooden wall, with about a dozen chairs. Too small to accommodate 38 people," said Mr Raza.

Every one in the group had paid around 68,000 rupees for an 11-day tour of the holy cities in Iraq offered by Mr Raza.

Iraqi officials had asked the pilgrims not to go anywhere and had stationed guards outside the room.

During their 26-hour detention, only one person accompanied by one guard was allowed to use the washroom outside.

"It was too embarrassing for all of us. We were accompanied by women and kiddies for whom you cannot even think about such a situation," said 54-year-old Saeed Rizvi, who works for a private company and lives in Ancholi area.

It was to be the first visit for Mr Rizvi and his family to Iraq.

Five others, his father, two female relatives and two cousins were also traveling with him.

"They put us in virtual incarceration. We were compelled to sit on the floor in a very awkward condition. Everyone passing by was staring at us bizarrely as if we had no self respect like them," said Mr Rizvi.

#7  Yet another aspect of the "nightmare" is, after 13 years out government has not settled the issue of how to prosecute these bastids, ie, Miranda rights, military tribunal, etc.

The more troubling aspect is the FBI had received a Russian terrorism tipper [and possibly a dossier] and had actually met with this guy, possibly on numerous occasions.

IMO the above refers to Islamist-desired OWG Caliphate = Global Islmist-Jihadist State, NOT JUST IN PAR BUT SUPERIOR IFF NOT DOMINANT TO ANY + ALL NON-ISLAM, to which my response is a resounding "Yuuupp".

[STAREFUL, GRASS-CHEWING BILLY GOAT here].

Jordan Arrests 8 Syrian Refugees in Troubled Camp
[An Nahar] Jordan police have nabbed
Don't shoot, coppers! I'm comin' out!
eight Syrians on suspicion of inciting riots at a refugee camp near the Jordan-Syria border, a Jordanian security official said Sunday.

About 100 Syrian refugees threw stones at police on Friday for preventing some of them from sneaking out of their desert camp. Ten coppers were maimed, including two who remain at death's door.

The security official said a military prosecutor will question the eight suspects later Sunday.

If convicted, they face up to three years in jail.

The Zaatari camp houses 150,000 refugees from the Syrian civil war. Another 350,000 Syrians have found shelter in Jordanian communities.

Shell, 3 Rockets Hit Hermel
[An Nahar] Three rockets and a shell fired from Syrian territory landed in Leb's Hermel district on Sunday, causing material damage only, the state-run National News Agency reported.

A shell and two rockets hit the road leading to the Sahlat al-Ma' area in the town of al-Qasr, NNA said.

In the evening, a rocket fired from Syria landed in the center of the town of Hermel near al-Mabarrat School, the agency reported.

Later on Sunday, NNA said the Grad rocket went kaboom! on the fence of Imam Zein al-Abidin Orphanage which is affiliated with the Mabarrat Charity Association, shattering the glass of its windows.

The orphanage's director Mohammed al-Saeed reassured that no students were maimed "because the administration had moved them to the orphanage's theater, which is like a bomb shelter, when the shelling of the area resumed at noon."

Saeed noted that "450 students aged 4-15 years live at the orphanage."

Meanwhile,
...back at the chili cook-off, Chuck and Manuel's rivalry was entering a new and more dangerous phase...
Free Syrian Army chief of staff Selim Idriss denied that the FSA and the jihadist al-Nusra Front had issued a joint statement threatening to move the battle into Leb, as reported by several media outlets.

The latest assaults, prompted President Michel Suleiman
...before assuming office as President, he held the position of commander of the Leb Armed Forces. That was after the previous commander, the loathesome Emile Lahoud, took office as president in November of 1998. Likely the next president of Leb will be whoever's commander of the armed forces, too...
to issue a statement, saying the rocket attacks and shelling on Leb did not guarantee democratic rights.

He said Leb was already suffering from the burden of Syrian refugees and that the authorities were committed to controlling the border as called for by the Baabda Declaration

His remarks came as he asked Army chief Gen. Jean Qahwaji to take the appropriate measures to preserve the safety of the Lebanese.

Most shells in the past two years were launched from regime-held areas, but anti-Assad rebels last week claimed firing into Hermel's countryside, threatening further attacks if Hizbullah did not stop fighting the insurgency.

Several shells landed in al-Qasr and neighboring villages on Saturday. They triggered panic and residents rushed to take cover indoors as shops in Hermel closed.

Troops Storm Flashpoint Town near Damascus
[An Nahar] Syrian troops loyal to Hereditary President-for-Life Bashir Pencilneck al-Assad
Supressor of the Damascenes...
stormed a flashpoint town near Damascus
...The place where Pencilneck hangs his brass hat...
on Sunday, said a watchdog, adding that scores of bodies, some of them disfigured, were found there.

The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said at least 80 people have been killed in the town of Jdaidet al-Fadl in five days of violence.

"Regime troops have taken complete control over the town of Jdaidet al-Fadl and its surroundings," said the Observatory which has documented the names of at least 80 people killed.

Observatory director Rami Abdel Rahman told Agence La Belle France Presse he feared the corpse count could be much higher, but that it was difficult to document the killings after the entry of regime forces into the town.

"We call on the International Committee of the Red Thingy to send a delegation to Jdaidet al-Fadl in order to investigate," Abdel Rahman said.

Three of those killed were children and six others were women, the Observatory said, adding that the rest were men, among them many rebel fighters.

Meanwhile the opposition Local Coordination Committees said the corpse count from the Jdaidet al-Fadl "massacre" has risen to 476.

The Observatory distributed amateur video filmed in the town showing the bodies of men laid out on the ground, some with mutilated faces and covered in blood.

Jdaidet al-Fadl is located in an area southwest of Damascus that is home to several communities, including Sunnis, Druze and Christians.

After the outbreak of Syria's conflict, which the United Nations
...an idea whose time has gone...
says has forced millions to flee their homes, many of those living in the area were internally displaced people.

An activist in Damascus said via the Internet that all communication, water and electricity have been cut off in Jdaidet al-Fadl, adding that some of the corpses were "found in one of the hospitals" in the town.

Identifying herself as Enas, the activist said some of the bodies "were severely beaten on the head, causing it to crack open. Others had bruises all over their face". She added that other bodies had been "burnt."

Since last year, the army has tried to root out rebels positioned southwest and east of Damascus, in a bid to secure the capital.

Sunday's violence comes a day after at least 121 people were killed across Syria, the Observatory reported.
