Street Gang Declares War Against Police
HARTFORD, Conn. -- A group of unidentified Hartford Police officers have sent a letter to the chief, assistant chief and deputy chiefs, alleging that they have been threatened by a city gang.

The officers from the South Patrol Division said that they have been threatened by the Los Solidos street gang. In a letter to the chiefs, the officers wrote that, "South officers have been blatantly threatened by the Los Solidos street gang."

The officers said that the gang members, beginning in three months, "will blow up squad cars" and "shoot any officer who approaches them."

The officers said gang members are in the process of obtaining bulletproof vests.

The Los Solidos, or the Solids, are a mostly Hispanic gang, organized to deal drugs. Channel 3 Eyewitness News reporter Jamie Roth reported that the gang was especially dangerous during the 1990s. Roth reported that the Solidos is re-emerging in the same neighborhoods that it terrorized during the 90s: the corners of Franklin and Shultas and Park and Zion. Police said officers are being shot at mostly at the intersection of Park and Zion streets.

The South Patrol officers said their information comes from intelligence.

Roth reported that a Hartford officer ducked a bullet at the location in January and a massive manhunt for the shooter followed. "We take the security of our officers very seriously and it is of paramount concern," said Deputy Chief Paul Hammick. "We have taken the necessary steps in the South End and throughout the city to make sure our officers have up-to-date intelligence of any threats to their safety. However, we do not discuss specific strategies as they relate to our investigation of gang activities.

#1  Fast resolution to this problem; offer a reward for the name and/or address of any gang member.
Round 'em up, check for legality, and gun violations, search residences, deport illegals, schedule hearings for the rest.
Then, to establish control, infiltrate the area with plain clothes units and kick some ass when you find it, and take their sneakers.

#2  Oh come on, wxjames - surely setting up a youth center or a nighttime basketball tourney will solve this problem. Root causes and all . . .

#3  Street Gangs: the New Urban Insurgency

Military analysts have been predicting this for some time. MS-13's been doing the same, only with less swagger -- but they've assasinated a number of police already.
Posted by: lotp || 08/28/2007 13:15 Comments || Top||

#4  I'm sure the police will be heavily criticized for "causing" the problem. The solution: France-like no-go areas for police. No Hispanics need feel threatened!
Posted by: gromky || 08/28/2007 13:15 Comments || Top||

#5  Sounds like a conspiracy. Like RICO. Like federal time. Mamacita and mamá de bebé won't be trucking out to Idaho or Utah to see ya, Chico.
Now all they gotta do is go after them. Unfortunately that probably won't happen until after a Hartford cop gets shot.
Posted by: tu3031 || 08/28/2007 13:27 Comments || Top||

#6  It's not just cops being targeted by gangs like MS13 - anybody is a potential victim. And in states like CT, you can't even defend yourself (legally) for the most part.
I no longer live up there, but if I did, I expect I'd be carrying concealed, permit or not. As the saying goes, 'Better judged by twelve than carried by six.'

#7  So, open borders crowd: Thus what ya had in mind?

The news headlines are replete with the consequences of unchecked illegal immigration, and until we build a real fence and give permission to border patrol to shoot, this sort of thing will only happen more frequently.

In the meantime, Police have guns. I suggest we let them use them.

#17  So, open borders crowd: Thus what ya had in mind?

The 'Hispanics' in Hartford are 98% Puerto Rican.

Fast resolution to this problem; offer a reward for the name and/or address of any gang member.
Round 'em up, check for legality, and gun violations, search residences, deport illegals, schedule hearings for the rest.

Won't happen. First, through either cultural pressure or fear of being shot, the 'Hispanic' community won't turn in gang members.

Second, "it's never Hartford's fault". When the schools system collapsed, the city and civic leaders blamed the suburbs. When the black community started escaping moving out to the near suburbs like Bloomfield, civic leaders blamed those blacks. The state police have in the past been called in to patrol city streets. The State is one of the biggest landlords in the city.

Third - Most gangbangers escape back to Puerto Rico before they're arrested. Rendition is damn near impossible; all the ganster has to do is enter through New York or New Jersey, and he's home.

Two drunk men arrested for driving same vehicle
Can ya drive?
I have to. I'm too drunk to walk...

Two Dorchester men were arrested for operating the same vehicle while intoxicated in the Colby-Abbotsford area. Harvey J. Miller, 43, who has no legs, was steering the 1985 Chevrolet truck from the driver’s seat while Edwin H. Marzinske, 55, operated the break and gas pedals, according to the police report.
Teamwork. It's the American Way...
They were headed northbound on Hiline Avenue in Abbotsford when police pulled them over at 2:40 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 18. Miller admitted he was too drunk to drive but argued he wasn’t operating the vehicle because he couldn’t push the pedals.
He was..legless, ya might say.
Miller was issued a citation for a third drunk driving offense, while Marzinske was cited for a second. Both men were also cited for operating after revocation.
Sounds like they've worked this routine a few times...
A third drunk man in the vehicle walked himself home after the incident.
He must be "the smart one".

I think this is a very weak legal defense. In fact, I'd say he doesn't have a leg to stand on.

Belgian diplomats accused of damaging ancient fossil
Egyptian authorities have accused Belgian diplomats of damaging a 40 million-year-old whale fossil when they allegedly drove over the ancient remains in a protected desert area, an official said Monday. Belgian officials denied any damage was done.

Mohamed Ibrahim, an official in the Ministry of Environment, said the diplomats in four-wheel drive vehicles ran over the fossil's neck in July after ignoring signs warning visitors not to drive in the Wadi el-Hitan, or Valley of the Whales, protected area and UNESCO World Heritage site located about 150 kilometres outside of Cairo.

The Belgian Foreign Ministry in Brussels and embassy in Cairo denied that the vehicles caused any damage to the ancient fossils. Foreign Ministry spokesman Marc Michielsen said the two diplomatic plated all-terrain vehicles were in the area but ''did not leave the road.'' ''They were not aware that the area was a protected area,'' Michielsen said. ''It seems the area was not cordoned off, and no notice or guards were present.''

Egyptian and Belgian authorities both said the incident took place in July. It was unclear why Egyptian officials waited until late August to publicly make the allegations. Michielsen said Egyptian authorities sent a letter to Belgian authorities in mid-July, which Belgian authorities answered on 5 August by saying the Belgians did not damage any fossils. ''Since then we have not received any reaction,'' Michielsen said.

Ibrahim, who works in the Environmental Ministry's Natural Protected Zones office, said the Egyptian prosecutor's office has estimated the damage at EUR 238,707 and has demanded Belgium pay that amount in compensation. ''The financial value doesn't really matter. What matters is the historical value,'' he said.
"We're not in it for the money."
Wadi el-Hitan contains fossils of the extinct suborder of whales, the archaeoceti, that date back about 40 million years. UNESCO says the fossils show the evolution of the whale from a land-based mammal to an ocean animal. UNESCO declared the site, which was discovered in 1936, as a World Heritage site in 2005. UNESCO officials in Paris did not have any immediate comment.

Fossilised penis sold at auction

It was trapped under the Siberian permafrost for more than 12,000 years, and discovered by fossil hunters who at first mistook it as a mammoth tusk.

But on Sunday, the four and a half foot long fossilised walrus penis — believed to be the world's largest — was the most discussed item of natural history for sale at I.M. Chait auctions in Beverley Hills.

Believe it or not, the buyer was Ripley's, the chain of oddity museums, whose owners bid $8000 ($A9620) over the phone from Orlando, Florida.
