Businessman gets 7 years for bribery
ALEXANDRIA, Va. -- Louisville businessman Vernon Jackson was sentenced yesterday to seven years and three months in federal prison for paying more than $400,000 in bribes to U.S. Rep. William Jefferson, D-La. Jackson, 54, who runs technology company iGate, did not address the court before the sentence was imposed by U.S. District Judge T.S. Ellis III.

Jackson's company was set up to bring broadband access to disadvantaged communities and poor countries. "It's a very serious crime," Ellis told Jackson. "Public corruption is the worst kind of virulent and malignant cancer."

Jackson's lawyer said Jackson accepted his guilt and knew he faced punishment. "Because of the peculiar and ongoing nature of this case, he is not going to address the court at this time," public defender Michael Nachmanoff told Ellis before the sentencing. "He has not sought to shift the blame for his action to anyone else."
Don't get your hopes up. If I remember correctly, in the Teapot Dome scandal, Doheney was convicted of paying the bribe that Secretary Fall was acquitted of taking.

Bucky Charged With 8 Counts
A former fugitive suspected of fatally shooting a state trooper and wounding two others made his first court appearances Saturday, a day after surrendering in a field over the Pennsylvania state line following a five-month manhunt. Ralph "Bucky" Phillips, who once threatened to "splatter pig meat all over Chautauqua County" in upstate New York and was on the FBI's 10 Most Wanted List, was charged in Chemung County with eight counts, including attempted aggravated murder, first-degree attempted murder and second-degree attempted murder, all in connection with the shooting of a state trooper in June.
I was really sorry to hear they took him alive.

#1  That "pig meat" epithet is sure to gain him special treatment by his jailers. I'm thinking along the lines of an anally-fixated 300 pound cellmate. "Come on. Squeal like a pig, Bucky! Just for me."

#2  And the taxpayer cost of trial, confinement, and keeping this piece of fecal matter breathing will be how much....? A sudden move, a jerk, hesitation.....I'm afriad it all could have been handled much better out in the corn field.

#4  Frank, you have fallen prey to the perilous siren call of the double negative. There was probably supposed to a "not" somewhere right after the "ain't right" part. The good news is that you're obviously getting your RDA of the precious amber fluid this Sunday. Enjoy.

Scientists warn of 'mad honey disease'
Mad honey disease is among the rarest afflictions in the world, but it appears to be on the increase.

Only 58 cases have been reported worldwide, but eight people were treated in 2005 alone.

The trend towards eating more natural products may be driving a rise in cases of the disease, whose symptoms can include convulsions, low blood pressure, fainting and temporary heart problems, according to a new report.

"Mad honey disease has the potential to cause death if untreated," say the researchers. "Because of the increasing preference for natural products, intoxication induced by consumption of honey will increase in the future."

Just a spoonful of the wrong honey can cause problems, according to researchers, who report their findings this week in the American Journal of Emergency Medicine.

Mad honey poisoning is most prevalent in honey from the Black Sea region of Turkey. Compounds called grayanotoxins, found in the nectar of rhododendrons, mountain laurels and azaleas, are thought to be responsible for the disease. Though harmless to bees, they are psychoactive and poisonous to humans. Affected honey is said to have a very bitter taste.

Though I did wonder why scientists were involved. ;-p

Prominent L.A. Muslim Becomes Center Of Dispute
A prominent Los Angeles Muslim is the center of a growing controversy over an award to him for promoting understanding between faiths. Maher Hathout, chairman of the Islamic Center of Southern California, was selected by the Los Angeles County Human Relations Commission to receive the John Allen Buggs Leadership Award for "encouraging inter-faith understanding and audiences." However some Jewish organizations were denouncing his selection because of alleged statements critical of Israel in support of Hezzbollah. "Dr. Hathout is a radical Islamic leader masquerading as a moderate and deceiving the American public," said Sherry Weinman, president of the Los Angeles office of the American Jewish Committee.

Other religious leaders, Christian, Muslim and Jewish, rallied to Hathout's support. Among them was Father Alexei Smith, director of ecumenical and interreligious affairs for the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Los Angeles. "I've repeatedly heard Dr. Hathout denounce violence and the taking of human life by anyone and everyone," said Smith. "It's high time that the county of Los Angeles recognize him."

The Human Relations Commission has received a large number of communications from the public about the award, and plans to consider them at its public meeting on Monday. "It's a very, very difficult situation," said Commissioner Donna Bojarsky. "It's clearly hit a nerve among a variety of communities in Los Angeles and our job is to be a force of unity and tolerance."

Hathout, 70, said he has long denounced violence by any organization, including Hamas and Hezbollah, against innocent civilians. That, he said, includes suicide bombings against innocent Israelis. When he called Hezbollah "freedom fighters" in 1998 and 1999 he was referring only to their actions on Lebanese soil against Israeli soldiers who had invaded the country, he said. He acknowledged calling Israel an apartheid regime but said, "That's my opinion and I'm entitled to it."

Leftest donk, egalitarian bastards, they'd turn Bergen-Belsen and Flossenburg into theme parks. No surprise it happened on the left coast. San Andreas, why are you still, why do you not hear my prayers?

#5  You read my mind, Barbara. I avoided posting the exact same thing last night when this article showed up. I suppose it has to do with being too d@mned cynical all of the time. It's just that there's this taqiyya thingie that makes every single bloody thing a Muslim says subject to interpretation. And if you do not use worst case logic when interpreting, you're an absolute fool.
