There was no car in the garage. And the stuff left behind turned out not to be much different from what gathers dust inside most American garages. The inventory, seen from outside:

I'm sure they're just limping along - which is why the entire Nugget notion of mass repop is rather moronic outside of Algiers, at least as I understand the situation.
Rudy could, indeed, assess, prioritize, and organize the situation - cutting the time required dramatically, but that would stymie the Nugget & Blankout Graft commissions and keep them from doing what they do best.

AP, the French Quarter, thank God, came through in outstanding shape. I don't know if Preservation Hall is open right now but it wouldn't surprise me.
.com, Orleans Parish (which is not the whole City) right now looks sort of a like a donut, i.e., a large residential area that flooded surrounded by other areas that did not (Uptown, the French Quarter, the CBD, much of the Lakefront, etc.) The issue (or one of many issues) is under what conditions if any you allow rebuilding in the "hole."

U.S. Sen. Edward M. Kennedy tried to save six fishermen stranded on a breakwater near the Kennedy compound yesterday, but had to turn back and hand the rescue off to the fire department. Kennedy called the Hyannis Fire Department around 11 a.m. when he saw the fishermen on the breakwater as waves up to 5 feet high crashed over it and winds gusted to 35 mph. The 69-year-old senator took out his flask whaler and got within earshot of the fishermen, but headed back because it was too dangerous, Hyannis Fire Capt. Craig Farrenkopf said. ``The senator was just coming into the dock on a whaler, he told us it was rough out there,'' Farrenkopf said. Farrenkopf said Kennedy is familiar with the water and ``thought he would do the right thing.'' Familiar with the water. Couldn't have said it better myself.
``He realized it was beyond his realm of handling the incident,'' Farrenkopf said. ...having been there before.
The men were fishing a couple hundred yards off shore near the Kennedy compound when the incoming tide stranded them. Firefighters made three trips to the breakwater, rescuing the fishermen two at a time. The fishermen were treated for minor hypothermia.
Normally when a Kennedy goes into the water, somebody dies...

AVES ISLAND (AP) - Caribbean islands have long been a destination for newlyweds, but this remote, treeless speck of land isn't on any travel agent's list. Seventeen Venezuelan sailors now live at a newly established base here, and on Saturday two couples were married - apparently the first such ceremonies to be held on the island. Venezuela's mainland is 380 miles away, but it's asserting a claim of ownership despite the fact Isla de Aves - Bird Island - is much closer to Dominica, Antigua and Puerto Rico. "Aves Island belongs to Venezuela. Several nations in the Eastern Caribbean dispute that claim, but we are reaffirming our sovereignty here," Cmdr. Guillermo Isturiz said before anchoring near the three-story concrete outpost.
The dispute is about more than just the land. The sparkling fishing waters offshore teem with tuna, grouper and red snapper, while oil and natural gas are thought to lie under the sea floor.
No Blood for Snapper!
Despite protests from other Caribbean island countries, President Hugo Chavez insists the island rightfully belongs to Venezuela, and last year his government built the $9 million outpost now used by the military and a group of biologists, aiming to shed any doubts about the limits of Venezuela's maritime boundaries. The leaders of some Eastern Caribbean countries, including Dominica and Antigua, have argued that Aves - only 1,900 feet long and 1,640 feet wide, smaller than Minnesota's Mall of America - is nothing more than a sandbar and should not be considered Venezuelan territory. "It certainly is Dominica's as far as we are concerned," Prime Minister Ralph Gonsalves of St. Vincent told The Associated Press in a telephone interview last week. Dominica lies just 140 miles east of Aves. Former Antigua Prime Minister Lester Bird noted while in office in 2003 that if Venezuela's claim were acknowledged, its 200-nautical-mile "exclusive economic zone" to offshore areas would encompass Montserrat and Grenada.

The dispute appears unchanged despite Venezuela's recent agreement to sell Caribbean nations fuel under preferential terms to help them cope with high oil prices. "We have developed very good relations with Venezuela, and we hope we can sort this out," Gonsalves said. Officials said the weddings and three baptisms of sailors' children by a chaplain were the first ever on the island. A second couple had their wedding on the beach. Venezuela also has opened Aves to scientists who study the many bird species and endangered sea turtles. Japanese Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi paid homage on Monday at a shrine for war dead seen by critics as a symbol of Japan's past militarism, drawing a swift protest from South Korea and certain to outrage China as well.
Japan's relations with its neighbors have already chilled because of Koizumi's annual visits to Tokyo's Yasukuni shrine, where war criminals convicted by an Allied tribunal are honored along with the nation's 2.5 million war dead.
Koizumi â clad in a dark suit rather than the traditional Japanese garb he has worn on some past visits â bowed, put his hands together in prayer and stood silently in front of an outer shrine for a moment before striding back to his car in front of a crowd that had gathered in a drizzling rain. Koizumi did not enter an inner shrine as he has in the past and made no remarks. Chief Cabinet Secretary Hiroyuki Hosoda told reporters the visit was made in a private capacity.
Japanese media said the low key atmosphere appeared to be an attempt to stress its private nature and mute the expected backlash from China and South Korea as well as domestic critics.
South Korean Foreign Minister Ban Ki-moon, however, swiftly summoned Japanese ambassador Shotaro Oshima to complain. "We strongly protest the visit to Yasukuni shrine despite our request and strongly urge that it is not repeated," Ban said.
Japanese business executives have been worried that the strain in diplomatic ties will hurt burgeoning economic relations between China and Japan especially. Tokyo stock market investors, recalling a slide in share prices after anti-Japanese protests in China in April, were wary of the possible fallout from Koizumi's visit to the shrine.
Japan and China are trying to arrange talks in Beijing between Japanese Foreign Minister Nobutaka Machimura and his Chinese counterpart, Li Zhaoxing, to discuss a possible leaders' summit later this year, media have reported. It was not clear how the Yasukuni visit would affect those discussions.
Koizumi has repeatedly said he visits Yasukuni to pray for peace and honor the war dead, not to glorify militarism. Koizumi has avoided visiting the shrine on August 15, the anniversary of Japan's 1945 surrender that ended World War Two and an emotive date in the region, but his visits on other occasions have nonetheless infuriated China and other countries.
"It's fine for the prime minister to stick to his beliefs, but given his status as the Japanese leader he should think about relations between countries and the people's feelings," said Choi Young-soo, 44, a South Korean on a sightseeing trip to the shrine. "He should not stir up ill feelings."
Bitter memories of Japan's 1910-1945 colonization run deep in North and South Korea, while China has not forgotten Tokyo's invasion and occupation before and during World War Two.
Despite a huge victory for Koizumi's ruling Liberal Democratic Party in a general election last month, Japan's public is divided over the Yasukuni visits. Courts have given conflicting rulings on whether they violate the constitutional separation of religion and state.
Takenori Kanzaki, the leader of LDP coalition partner New Komeito â a Buddhist-backed party â told reporters Koizumi's visit was extremely regrettable, Kyodo news agency reported. But Hiroki Kanematsu, a 20-year-old law student who went to Yasukuni to watch Koizumi, said he backed the prime minister's stance. "Since he started making the visits, he should not stop just because of what China says."
Another student, Ai Yamaguchi, took a different view. "It would be fine for him to go as an individual, but he is the prime minister, so it is not good," she said. "We should seek good ties with China and South Korea because they are our close neighbors."

...My understanding is that Yasakuni is not only Japan's Arlington, but there is a spiritual/religious aspect associated with it as well. Koizumi almost has to visit it - it would be much like the Pope not visiting St Peters.

The big issue is external understanding of the faith system of Japan. This is about religion and doesn't effect the outside world.
These are not political visits. Praying to and for the people memorailzed is thought to help them move on.(Japan is Buddhist) It also is thought to settle their spirits and help maintain peace in the world of mortals.
The Korean's and Chinese know better. They can't resist the opportunity to dip Japan is crap over WW2.

I think we have seen reunions with American and Japanese servicemembers at Iwo Jima and Okinawa marking the anniversay of the battles. It is appearent those who went through the actual horror are able to forgive far more easier than those who sat thousands of miles away and decades later. It may also be because Americans seldom believe in allowing history to destroy their future as all too many societies and cultures do.
THE last Australian to fight in World War I, William Evan Allan, from Victoria, has died at the age of 106. The death of the former able seaman was confirmed by veterans affairs officials in Canberra. Mr Allan, from Melbourne, was also the sole surviving veteran of both world wars.
Born in Bega in New South Wales in July 1899, Mr Allan enlisted in the Royal Australian Navy as a boy sailor at the outbreak of World War I when he was only 14 years old. As an able seaman, he was a member of the crew of HMAS Encounter from 1915 until 1918. He sailed in the Pacific and also in the Indian Ocean escorting troop ship convoys. Mr Allan served in the Royal Australian Navy for 34 years and also saw service in World War II. He retired from the navy in 1947 having attained the rank of lieutenant.
Mr Allan, who is survived by his daughter Judith Blake and grandchildren Duncan and Philippa, would be given a state funeral, said Victorian Premier Steve Bracks. Veterans Affairs Minister De-Anne Kelly expressed her sorrow at the passing of Mr Allan. She said he was the last remaining Australian to have seen active service and the last sailor who served in the Royal Australian Navy during World War I. "Mr Allan and his fellow servicemen were a vital part of the Australian forces during World War I. Their tireless devotion to duty was a credit to them and Australia," Mrs Kelly said. "Our World War I veterans helped to build this nation that we love. Mr Allan was just a boy when he went to war, much younger than most. His sacrifice is remembered and we honour him for his service."
Australia's proud naval tradition was built by men like Mr Allan who served more than 30 years in the navy, seeing service during World War II, Mrs Kelly said. "With his passing, we have lost an entire generation who left Australia to defend our nation, the British Empire and other nations in the cause of freedom and democracy," she said.
In WWI, Mr Allan's ship, the light cruiser HMAS Encounter, took part in the search for the infamous German raider Wolfe, which had been causing havoc with Allied shipping. Mr Allan continued his career with the RAN between the two world wars, being promoted and acquiring additional qualifications. During World War II, he served at sea in the Royal Navy armed merchant cruiser HMS Moreton Bay, as well as at Flinders Naval Depot, as Piermaster at HMAS Ladava at Milne Bay, New Guinea, in 1944, aboard HMAS Australia and as an instructor at HMAS Cerberus.
He had lived as a boy on a family property in Upper Brogo, New South Wales, and after leaving the navy returned to the land, this time on a small farm near Frankston, Victoria. In 1999, Mr Allan received the 80th Anniversary Armistice Remembrance Medal, awarded to all living Australian World War I veterans. He was also awarded the King's Silver Jubilee Medal in 1935, the King's Coronation Medal in 1937 and the Australian Centenary Medal for the 2001 Centenary of Federation.

China has asked for permission to conduct uranium exploration and mining in Australia to fuel its growing nuclear power industry, Australian Foreign Minister Alexander Downer said Monday.
Downer said the government had no objection to the principle of opening up Australia's significant uranium deposits to the Chinese, but would insist Beijing first sign a nuclear safeguard agreement.
"We wouldn't be exporting any uranium to China for military purposes of any kind," Downer said on national radio.
"By that I don't only mean for use in nuclear weapons, but also we wouldn't be exporting any uranium to China for use in military vessels or vehicles of one kind or another," he said.
Chinese officials first asked for access to Australian uranium deposits during meetings in February with the Australian Nuclear Safeguards and Non-Proliferation Office, officials said.

China is grabbing every energy source it can. The aggressive move would be to prevent them. It would also be stupid. If they want to invest in energy infrastructure, why should we stop them,? It will only make us invest more and raise the price of energy.
In 1931 Japan started WWII by invading China. China hasn't invaded anyone lately. The sooner they're rich, the better. Let's let them get as rich as possible as fast as possible but make sure we're always in a position to thump them if it becomes necessary.

Depends on what you mean by lately. The Dalai Lama may have a somewhat different view. The Taiwanese may agree but be concerned that the trend is about to change. The Japanese may look at the Spratly Islands (and possible oil and gas) and say "yeah, but ..."

We need a committee like we need a hole in the head. We need one guy/gal with the nads to make some tough decisions before the patient dies on the operating table.
Interesting, too, that despite the bitching about Mike Brown's lack of experience in disaster recovery neither Francis nor Isaacson has any experience in that department.
Francis is a good guy by all accounts but not what I'd call a dynamic leader. Isaacson's a local kid made good, but he's a frickin' journalist and maybe looking for material for his next book.

And you have ruled and you have done great things and awful things in the time of your rule, but a new world is coming in and white supremacy and black inferiority will have no place in that new world. ASMAN: One of the parts of the old world that you suggest, what happened in 1927, that levees were purposefully blown up to decimate the black population in New Orleans. You said the same thing might have happened again. We just had on one of the engineers who, in fact, the man who you quoted, who says that, in fact â John Barry â who says nothing like that, in fact, happened. First of all, in 1927, the levees weren't destroyed in black populations, they were in white populations, so you got the 1927 story wrong, but also there is no sign of levees having been blown up during Katrina.
FARRAKHAN: Mr. Barry said that those levees were purposefully blown up.
ASMAN: Yes, but we just had John Barry on.
FARRAKHAN: Wait just a minute. Just a minute, he said it was not race, it was class.
ASMAN: Right.
FARRAKHAN: Now, here we are in 2005. Many, many people in the Ninth Ward, black and white, believe that what happened in 1927 happened again, but this time, race and class were used. Now, I don't know whether it did or did not happen, but when people believe something like that, it is the duty of those who can search out a rumor and prove it's truth or its falsehood should do that to either dispel the rumor or prove it's truth. So those who are culpable may be brought to justice.
ASMAN: Reverend Farrakhan, we have so many rumor mills at work in the world, partly because of the Internet, but we're always getting wild rumors. Why dignify a crazy hate-filled rumor like this with your word and with your suggestion that it might be true, when all of the evidence says nothing like that ever happened?
FARRAKHAN: No. All of the evidence is not in, sir, unless an investigation is carried out to prove that is only a rumor.
And whether it is or is not, look at the talk that's going on today that they don't even feel that the Ninth Ward should be rebuilt, that it should be made into a wetland. What will happen to the tens of thousands of persons who lived there and won't be able to come back and are not being called back to clean their neighborhood up and rebuild, as they were asked to rebuild in 1927?
ASMAN: All right. Well, John Barry, again, the man who wrote the book you quote says it did not happen, absolutely. You can bank on it, so please don't spread these rumors anymore.
FARRAKHAN: He did not say that, sir.
ASMAN: We just had him on. We just had him on.

I was aware that the NOI is not a kosher muslim sect, and knew about the aliens part (IIRC Apocalypse is going to be triggered by an ufo wave), the "evil sorcerer creating the white devils" bit,... but this is ridiculous.
Actually, the whole idea of blacks converting to this paternalistic, racist religion - in classical arab, the language of the Master Race of the Master Religion, there is a single word to say both "black" and "slave", Abid IIRC, and the arab slave trade started earlier, lasted longer, was bigger (17+ millions vs 11-14 millions), and was much more cruel (men were castrated, children and wimmen were put into sexual slavery), there was an high mortality (about 70 millions slave descendants in Americas, vs virtually none in muslimland),... - is ridiculous.
Still, islam is seen as the ultimate in-your-face to the western/white order (it is, actually), and has sort of became the banner of many such movements. It's very fashionable, in a way.
I remember reading an article in a french mag quite a while back, way before 9/11, about the way Us authorities were trying to "help" (so to speak) spread "mainstream" islam in jail, prisons being breeding grounds for islam converts, rather than the NOI version, which was rightly deemed as anti-whites and secessionnist. This had to be done in the late 90's I'd say. I wonder if that "mainstream" islam was of the salafist/wahabi trend, seeing how army muslim "chaplains" were formed?

Farrakhan has made quite a career out of making outrageous statements. I think with the exception of a few his followers his claims are mostly dismissed. What is troubling is his false preaching that is accepted by some. Primarily his zero sum beliefs in racial equality that have a certain appeal to his core audience. He believes "personal responsibilityâ can only be achieved by taking it from the "dominant" race. One only has to look at what happened in Toledo to see how misguided that message is. How could what a group of Nazis say on a public street be worse then the violence that transpired. But of course rather then condemn their actions it is dismissed with the ole "What did you expect" excuse. But what do I know...I'm just a white guy with four centuries of privilege.

On the other hand, the QDR may be getting ready to suggest a massive cut in tactical air - perhaps as much as 30%. And since the USAF buy is now down to only about 1800 aircraft, this could be a serious blow against the program. The USMC still intends a full buy, and the RN/RAF buy is a go, but the USN buy could be toast. Stay tuned....

Mysteriously, I haven't heard word one about a high performance aircraft that is remote guidanced. Such aircraft are an entirely different paradigm than are manned aircraft. Removing pilots changes everything.
Optimally, I can imagine such aircraft as being fully modular, size dependent only on engine, fuel capacity and weapons systems. Even the shape of the aircraft would be radically different, just in eliminating waste space.
Survivability and related costs could be much lower, even to the point of having an inexpensive version that is near-expendable.

Check this for starters. Somehow, I doubt we'll see a lot about actual development aircraft until after first use. But the challenges will be substantial and countering it could be relatively easy. Perhaps there is a dual development strategy. One hi-tech model for use against China/Russia/France and one lo-tech for use against al-Qaeda/Mexico/Smugglers.

From what I know, only the F-35B (USMC/RN) had weight problems, 8% too much. The problem is that the solution was to halve the air-to-ground payload to two 1,000-ton stores, preventing internal carriage of the Mk84, and to thin the skin. :(
Oh, and the F-35C might be cut, but perhaps the USAF should procure it instead? Considering that the F-35C might be more urgently to replace the Navy's strike fighters than the F-35A to replace the Air Force's air-to-air...

Some of the delegates applauded his fiery anti-Western speech several times. Zimbabwe is grappling with its worst economic crisis since independence in 1980, and aid groups have estimated 5 million of its 12 million people may need food aid this year. Mugabe's critics say his government policies have exacerbated the hunger. Mugabe blames Zimbabwe's economic crisis on sanctions it says Britain has organised in retaliation for Harare's land reform programme, which gave white-owned farms to landless blacks. In his speech, Mugabe defended the land redistribution saying it was needed to redress the "gross imbalances" of British colonialism.

Air Zimbabwe has been forced to cancel several domestic, regional and international flights due to a crippling fuel shortage and the company's terrible track record of failing to pay for refueling and landing fees at airports around the world
Furious passengers told New Zimbabwe.com how Mugabe and his group forced a deviation in the plane's route, a decision which led to a four-hour grounding of the plane after Air Zimbabwe failed to pay soon after a refueling had been done.
"It seems Air Zimbabwe were afraid to tell Mugabe that the fuel would not complete the journey," said a passenger on the plane. "Frankly, I was pissed off that our journey was altered to suite Mugabe who dumped us when he got to his destination."
Another passenger confirmed seeing refueling trucks approaching the plane. He described dramatic scenes of seeing the plane's captain angrily remonstrating with one of the men who did the refueling.
"For long periods, we were just being told there was a problem. The nature of the problem was not revealed to us," said the passenger who cannot be named"

Maybe the Imams that credited Allan with the Katrina tragedy got buried in the rubble of the quake, hence the silence on Allan and his whims.
