-Short Attention Span Theater-
Spiders Beside Her Inspire Fire
A 34 year-old German woman decided to rid her garage of spiders- so: First she attacked the pesky critters with hair spray – lots of it. The spiders were unimpressed, so the annoyed hausfrau grabbed a cigarette lighter, and attempted to burn them out. Hair spray being quite inflammable [sic], there was a sort of popping noise, and, within minutes, flaming material was oozing down the garage wall, and setting a nearby hedge ablaze. The woman grabbed her garden hose, and tried to put the blaze out; but it spread to her house – burning it to the ground.
But the spiders are gone, right? So it worked. Kinda.

#2  Don't be silly -- German birds are messy, so that isn't a possible solution. Yes, I know all birds are messy, but that isn't the point to a German Hausfrau. This woman likely sweeps the sidewalk in front of her house as well. (After living there four years, I did too.) ;-)

Europe
Greece to use satellites to control illegal immigration
The government is considering launching a network of 12 lightweight satellites into orbit primarily to monitor Greece’s borders for illegal immigration and construction, a source said yesterday. The government source said a scientific study has been submitted to the Security Research Center (KEMEA), which belongs to the Public Order Ministry, on the proposed satellite network. The ministry is leaning toward adopting the plan and is currently weighing other aspects of the project, including related costs and development issues, the source added.

The network of satellites would revolve between 400 to 800 kilometers above the earth — much lower than other satellites, which usually orbit at about 36,000 kilometers. The satellites will be neither expensive nor bulky; they will weigh about 50 kilograms or slightly more, depending on the satellite’s program, the source said. One of the network’s main duties will be to monitor the country’s borders for illegal immigrants. Another would be to help determine where the country’s oil wealth lies.

Each year, Greece catches thousands of immigrants trying to sneak into the country as a means of moving on to other parts of Western Europe. The migrants, who hail from countries such as as Iraq, often fall victim to people smugglers and enter the country under dangerous conditions. The satellites will also be able to spot illegal buildings that have gone up without the necessary state permits.

Illegally constructed homes are a regular feature of the local real estate market and have been blamed for spurring arsonists to burn forested areas near cities each summer.

Critics say the government is aware of the problems associated with illegal construction, but lacks the political will to get rid of the illicit industry. The cost of the project was not disclosed by the source, but officials say the European Union could help fund it. The government could award most of the project’s construction to local companies such as Hellenic Aerospace Industry (EAB).
I was going to suggest we do the same, but all the technology in the world doesn't matter if you don't have the will to use it.

#1  You need to intercept the illegals, not just watch them flow en masse through your borders.

Turks debate Armenian killings
Academics have held the first-ever public discussions in Turkey about the early 20th century mass killings of Armenians, prompting criticism from Turkish nationalists who called it an attempt to accuse Turkey of genocide. The European Union called the academic conference on Saturday a test of freedom of expression in Turkey, which is hoping to begin talks for membership in the bloc next month. The academic conference had been cancelled twice, once in May after the justice minister said organisers were "stabbing the people in the back," and again on Thursday when an Istanbul court ordered the conference closed and demanded to know the academic qualifications of the speakers.

Home Front: Culture Wars
Cherokees vote to display Ten Commandments
If you are nostalgic for the days when the Ten Commandments were posted in public buildings, you might want to consider visiting the Eastern Band of the Cherokee Indians.

The tribal council is making plans to mount a copy of the Ten Commandments in the council house where government meetings are held, and possibly display them throughout other public buildings in the Cherokee Nation of western North Carolina.

The idea was introduced by Councilwoman Angela Kephart last month. She said the tribe should display the Ten Commandments out of respect and devotion to God. The motion passed unanimously.

"We aren't saying you have to abide by the Ten Commandments," Kephart said, according to the Smoky Mountain News. "We are simply displaying God's Ten Commandments. That's what He expects from each and every individual. If you break that, it is between you and God. It is not between you and the tribal council; it is between you and God."

There is no First Amendment issue involved, and even if the American Civil Liberties Union wanted to make one, it can't. The U.S. Constitution does not apply to Cherokee, nor to any other Native American tribe for that matter, according to Cherokee's Attorney General David Nash.

"We are a sovereign nation and we can pretty much post anything we want in our council chambers," said Kephart. "For once the federal government is not going to tell us what to do. We can feel good about it because we are standing up for God. The more it becomes controversial, the more we need to stand firm."

Kephart was clear about her desire to promote Christianity.

"God has blessed our tribe," she said. "We have a very rich tribe, per se. We are operating on over a $200 million budget thanks to our gaming enterprise."
Posting the Ten Commandments doesn't prevent others from practicing their religion, explained Nash. "Anybody can practice any religion they want to practice," Nash said.

#3  News Alert. Cuba is also a sovereign nation. Didn't stop some ACLU and federal judicial types from extending American law [a.k.a. extraterritoriality = imperalism] onto their land. Its all about power. Unless the Cherokees have some real good casinos to pay for good lawyers and lobbyists, this one is headed for the docket.

#5  Heh. Must present a real challenge to the A.C.Screw.U.

On the one hand the Cherokee are publicly acknowledging the Christian God (horrors!) and we can't have that.

On the other hand, the Cherokee are an oppressed minority....

Heads exploding in 5, 4, 3.... :-D

#6  I had heard, although I have never seen it verified, that one of the reasons the ACLU is so hard over about religion is that they make money whenever they bring a suit against a local government. So for these pieces of excrement it is not a matter of principle, it is just another payday. I am ashamed to say that San Diego dropped almost $950K on these parasites to abandon the boy scouts.

India to start HIV testing military recruits
SHILLONG, India - India’s president said all new recruits to the country’s armed forces would be tested for the HIV virus after the deaths of some 200 soldiers due to AIDS in the past two years. “The military will be testing for HIV in new recruits and undertake pre-natal examination of wives of personnel in the services,” President Abdul Kalam said at an army seminar in Shillong.

Kalam is the supreme commander of India’s armed forces of 1.3 million personnel, one of the largest militaries in the world. Officials said the HIV testing would start in October. India has an estimated 5.134 million people infected with the HIV virus in 2004, second to South Africa which has the world’s highest HIV/AIDS caseload.

“HIV/AIDS has become a security threat to India,” Lieutenant-General Bhupinder Singh told the seminar. “AIDS is no less destructive than war itself. We want to keep our force fighting fit.”Government records show more than 300 soldiers are currently infected with the HIV virus.
I'm posting this because I don't know the practice of the US armed forces and other western militaries. Are we screening routinely and the Indians are now just doing what we do, or is this something new?

#1  Steve,

All of those tests are done routinely by US military hospitals and upon enlistment, plus upon every transfer. We have without question the healthiest military force in history.

123 Pakistanis arrested on Iranian border
Around 123 Pakistanis were arrested by Taftan Levies on Saturday while trying to enter Iranian territory illegally. Sources said that the arrested Pakistanis were planning to travel to Europe in search of employment via Iran. After apprehending them, the Iranian security forces pushed them back to the zero point, where they were arrested by the Taftan Levies. The levies later handed them over to the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA).

Meanwhile, the Mand Levies, in another operation, arrested 11 Afghanis and four Pakistanis trying to enter Iran without required documents. They were arrested under the Foreign Act and a case has been registered against them.

Three women, man killed for honour
MULTAN: Two men killed their sister and her suspected lover by slitting their throats, while another woman was also killed by her brother for refusing to marry a man chosen by her family in a separate honour killing.

Abdul Ghafoor and Manzoor killed their 27-year-old sister Shamim and her alleged paramour, Rafiq, with the help of their two cousins, Mursaleen and Allah Ditta, in Ganjaywala village, approximately 35 kilometres south of Multan. Ghafoor and Manzoor overpowered Shamim and Rafiq with the help of their cousins and slit their throats with a kitchen knife, relatives said. "We have registered a case but no one has been arrested so far. It is a case of honour killing," Munir Ahmed Chisti, the Multan district police officer, told Daily Times.

In a similar incident in Mian Chunnu, Khanewal district, Muhammad Akram of Chhab Kalan village killed his sister, Mussarat, after she refused to marry a man chosen for her by the family. In other news, a housewife was shot dead by two men in Darkhwast Jamal Khan village. Allah Bakhsh and Muhammad killed the woman to avenge the alleged rape of their relative by the woman's brother-in-law.

Man's nose chopped off for honour
MULTAN: Three brothers chopped off the nose of a youth and threw him into a field for his alleged relations with their sister in the Khanpur police station area on Friday, a police official said. "We have registered a case against Muhammad Ramzan, Muhammad Manzoor and Hanif who had kidnapped Nazir Ahmad Malik, 20, of Jetha Bhatta, thrashed him and cut his nose to punish him for allegedly having sexual relations with their sister," DPO Rahimyar Khan Syed Ahsan Mehboob told Daily Times on phone on Saturday.

That was a close call. Nazir is one lucky Muslim. A man can get by without a nose.
