Sheriff: Time For Citizens To Arm Themselves
SPARTANBURG COUNTY, S.C. -- Investigators said 46-year-old Walter Lance grabbed a woman who was walking her dog in Milliken Park on Sunday afternoon. They said Lance choked the woman, made her take off her clothing and tried to rape her.

Sheriff Chuck Wright opened his news conference by saying, "Our form of justice is not making it."

He said, "Carry a concealed weapon. That'll fix it."

He referred to Lance repeatedly as an "animal," and expressed his disgust about Lance's long record and the attack.

He said Lance "doesn't fight police or men folk -- he just goes after women." He said Lance is not married because, "No woman can stay married to him because he beats them down too much."

Wright said in his view, gun control is, "Is when you can get you(r) barrel back on the target quick. That’s gun control."

And then he said, "I think I better stop before I get sanctioned."

I guess sanctioning in sinktrapping for sheriffs. But I doubt Sheriff Walker will have much trouble at the next election.

-Short Attention Span Theater-
Raids dismantle $2 billion Arizona drug network
Law enforcement authorities have arrested over 70 people in raids that dismantled a narcotics trafficking network suspected of smuggling nearly $2 billion worth of drugs through Arizona's western desert, officials said on Monday.

The announcement in Phoenix caps a 17-month investigation culminating in a series of three "large-scale enforcement actions" tied to the probe, according to U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement, the Arizona Attorney General's Office and the Pinal County Sheriff's Department.

During last week's series of raids alone, authorities seized more than two tons of marijuana, 19 weapons and nearly $200,000 in cash.

Intelligence gathered as part of "Operation Pipeline Express" found the drug-smuggling ring was tied to Mexico's Sinaloan cartel and has been in existence for at least five years.

Authorities estimate the drug operation during that time smuggled more than 3.3 million pounds of marijuana, 20,000 pounds of cocaine and 10,000 pounds of heroin into the United States.

Illicit proceeds generated from those drugs were estimated at nearly $2 billion, authorities said.

Chinese scientists get into Halloween spirit by turning rice into blood
I'm never going to be able look at rice quite the same way again ....
Researchers in China believe they have found a way to produce and harvest large quantities of human serum albumin (HSA) -- a blood protein that is widely used in drug and vaccine production -- from ordinary grains of rice.

“It looks like an interesting technological step forward,” Dr. Richard J. Benjamin, chief medical officer for the American National Red Cross, told FoxNews.com. “It could potentially produce large quantities in a reasonable time.”

According to the study, Yang He and his colleagues discovered a way to produce the protein in rice seeds and were able to purify the HSA from it, obtaining about 2.75 grams of HSA per kilogram of rice. The protein was tested on rats and they found that the rice-produced HSA was chemically equivalent to the blood-derived version.

“The disadvantage of what we currently use is that it is a blood product, which means it could transmit infection,” Benjamin noted.

HSA is used in hospitals for resuscitation, when patients need fluids, when they have lost blood, or for burn victims. According to the authors of the study, the findings suggest that the transgenic rice seeds may be a cost-effective source for HSA and might help satisfy an increasing worldwide demand for the protein.

Dr. Benjamin disagrees that there is a high demand for this particular protein.

“If it were to come to the market it in the USA, I just don’t know that there is a screaming demand for an unmet need for HSA.” He does emphasize, however, the need and demand for any and all blood donations. “Right now, all blood donations are needed desperately,” said Benjamin.

Though the tests on the rice are complete, this method of extracting HSA from rice has to be approved by a lengthy FDA process before it hits any market.

Brown County, WI, Considering 'Veterans Courts'
Judges are trying to establish special courts for military veterans, with an emphasis on treatment instead of incarceration for veterans experiencing mental health care problems. Police, prosecutors and the VA would help forwarding such cases out of the regular court system into these special courts.

The veterans court idea could eventually become regional and spread to other counties.

#3  My guess would be a monster. It's that old "one law for everybody" thing again.

I occasionally go to a PTSD group at the VA in Baltimore. When I first started going I was surprised at the number of guys who were ex-druggies or had spent time in prison or both. I still find this indecent. They deserved better because they gave so much. Since the majority are Vietnam vets I saw them give it.

But (as virtually all of them would admit) it was always individual choice that got them in trouble with the law. The ghosts and the anger and the overreactions and the inappropriate responses were connected to the trauma, but are only a part of an overall matrix of life and behavior. When your life is stable your mind stabilizes. Most people don't hop off the deep end when they're getting married but when they're getting divorced.

I'm all in favor of continuing to improve the VA. It's 1000 percent better now than it was in my Dad's time. Its case management system right now is better than Walter Reed's, and except for a few overworked primary care doctors I've never felt like I was taking up valuable time for my unimportant problems.

But the biggest problem is always that the vet has to come to them. Once enrolled in the system they're great, but if you're not enrolled you don't exist and if you drop out you've ceased to exist. That's what should be a social work problem, but the Marxist theory taught in today's schools of social work doesn't seem to cover how to solve it, so I guess the social workers aren't up to fixing the problem.

Dengue denies life to five
[Dawn] Another five people died of dengue virus in the city on Saturday. The total number of deaths due to the viral disease touched 311.

Reports said Fouzia, 24, and Parveen Bibi, 55, died at private health facilities on Ferozepur Road and Jail Road, respectively, while Waqas Ali, 18, and Majidan Bibi succumbed to dengue virus at Services Hospital.

Allah Rakhi of Lalpul died at a private hospital on Jail Road. The health department, however, confirmed four deaths of dengue fever patients.

Meanwhile,
...back at the Senate, Odius Sepulcher called for war against the Visigoths...
Punjab Health Director Information Management System Dr Anwar Janjua told media that 167 confirmed dengue patients were reported during the last 24 hours in the province, out of which 88 were reported in Lahore.

The total number of dengue patients across Punjab is 19,781. Of these 16,672 belong to Lahore.

He said a training workshop of homeopathic doctors and physicians was held under the aegis of the Health Department at Town Hall on Saturday for the correct diagnosis of dengue patients, provision of timely medical facilities to them and for the awareness of people associated with different methods of treatment.

The workshop was attended by 686 homeopaths and 237 physicians in which they were briefed on the nature and signs of dengue disease, he said.

Dr Janjua further said 416 family physicians and nurses of Allama Iqbal Medical College had also completed their training regarding treatment of dengue patients. Similarly, training was provided to all deputy district officers of health and lady health supervisors regarding vector surveillance at the Institute of Public Health.

He said a team of World Health Organization had reached Lahore for the assistance of the department and enhancing clinical skills of Pak doctors. It would exchange information regarding diagnosis and treatment of dengue.

Europe
Greek PM calls referendum on EU debt dea
The referendum will decide if they stay in the Euro or not.
"The plan of initiatives calls for a confidence vote," Papandreou told his Socialist party lawmakers in parliament, moments after he had also announced a referendum would also be held on the EU deal.

"The command of the Greek people will bind us," he said.

"Do they want to adopt the new deal, or reject it? If the Greek people do not want it, it will not be adopted," the prime minister said after protests were held around the country last week against his government's austerity policies.
Excellent idea: let the people speak. Though one must note that it's a bit unusual for the elites of Europe to let the people decide. They must really be stuck...
Papandreou, who has 153 deputies in the 300-seat parliament, has faced increasing dissent within his own party over the hardening austerity policy monitored by the EU and the International Monetary Fund that has sparked general strikes and widespread protests, many of them violent.

Public anger showed itself again around the country on Friday as parades were held to mark Greece's wartime resistance to Nazi Germany and Fascist Italy.

#1  Public anger showed itself again around the country on Friday as parades were held to mark Greece's wartime resistance to Nazi Germany and Fascist Italy.

I wonder if they also remember that rival resistance groups gunned for each other too.

Starting in 1943, on a number of cases EDES and ELAS fought each other in a sort of prelude to the civil war that sprang up after the German departure in 1944. EAM alleged that EDES was aided by the German occupying forces and by the Nazi-supported puppet regimes of Tsolakoglou, Logothetopoulos and Rallis. This situation led to triangular battles among ELAS, EDES and the Germans. At the same time, ELAS attacked and destroyed Psarros' military formation, the "5/42 Evzones Regiment", killing him. - Wiki

Bulgaria PM’s party set to win runoff
But I think we all saw this coming...
SOFIA: Bulgarians started voting in a presidential runoff on Sunday likely to be won by the ruling center-right GERB party’s candidate, strengthening its hand before 2013 general elections.

GERB’s candidate Rosen Plevneliev won 40 percent of the vote in last week’s first round after a campaign blighted by rallies against the Roma minority and corruption, highlighting problems facing the European Union’s poorest state.

Plevneliev, 47, previously manager of a major building company is widely expected to beat Socialist Ivailo Kalfin. A win would remove the possibility of government-initiated legislation or appointments being vetoed by Socialist president Georgi Parvanov who has often criticized the cabinet.

“The cause in this election is very strong and important — speeding up Bulgaria’s development,” Plevneliev said after casting his ballot, as quoted by GERB in a statement.

Analysts say Prime Minister Boiko Borisov is unlikely to risk potentially unpopular overhauls of areas such as health care and pensions but will focus on keeping tight fiscal discipline and carrying on with large-scale infrastructure improvement. He will also be keen to demonstrate Bulgaria’s progress by ensuring it joins the EU’s passport-free Schengen zone, from which it has been blocked due to corruption concerns, before the 2013 election.

If elected, Plevneliev plans to set up councils to monitor economic policy, as well as much-needed reform of the justice system.

Fifth Column
Sexual assaults continue to plague 'Occupy' protests
Gather hundreds of protestors in a public park with free food, little to no security and a general disregard for the rule of law, and you're bound to attract a few unsavory characters.

Around 6:00 a.m. Sunday, one such person entered a woman's tent at Occupy Wall Street's Zuccotti Park shantytown and sexually assaulted her, the latest in a string of rapes and sexual assaults at anti-corporate protests across the country.

Equally troubling is "Occupy" organizers' reluctance to cooperate with police or encourage victims to seek help.

In Sunday's case, they chased the pervert away but never called the authorities.

"We don't tell anyone," an organizer told the New York Post. "We handle it internally. I said too much already."

In Baltimore, a security statement from protesters warned that sexual assault would not be tolerated, but discouraged involving police to apprehend lawbreaking sex criminals. Rape victims were encouraged to contact the point people from the "Security Committee," nicknamed Koala! and Largesse.

"Though we do not encourage the involvement of the police in our community, the survivor has every right, and the support of Occupy Baltimore, to report the abuse to the appropriate law enforcement," the statement added.

Armed Citizen Militia Shows Up At Occupy Phoenix
Armed citizen militia group US Border Guard is making its presence felt at the Occupy Phoenix demonstration to protect free speech rights, arguing that the second amendment prevents the state from abusing the first amendment.

The group has been labeled “neo-nazis” by the Southern Poverty Law Center, which is usually a demonization tactic, but the individual shown in the clip, “JT Ready” has attended neo-nazi rallies and is closely affiliated with the fringe National Socialist Party.

The group has also operated as a “Minutemen on steroids” outfit, organizing armed patrols of the US border with Mexico.

As we have previously highlighted, the fringe neo-nazi movement has been completely infiltrated by the FBI, right down to the level where an FBI informant actually got caught organizing a neo-nazi rally in Orlando back in 2007.

Is this a means of infiltrating the ‘Occupy’ movement, a minority fringe extremist group trying to attach itself to the protesters, or merely concerned citizens expressing their right to bear arms peaceably?

Opinions will undoubtedly be split, but one certainty is the fact that the establishment media instantly seized upon groups like this attaching themselves to the Tea Party rallies as a smear tactic to claim the whole movement was racist and violent. However, in the case of ‘Occupy’, the mainstream networks have largely ignored making such connections.

New Satellite Data Contradicts Carbon Dioxide Climate Theory
Global warming alarmism is turned on its head and the supposed role of carbon dioxide in climate change may be wrong, if the latest evidence from Japan's scientists is to be believed.

Japanese national broadcaster, NHK World, broke the astonishing story on their main Sunday evening news bulletin (October 30, 2011). Television viewers learned that the country's groundbreaking IBUKU satellite, launched in June 2009, appears to have scorched an indelible hole in conventional global warming theory.

Standing in front of a telling array of colorful graphs, sober-suited Yasuhiro Sasano, Director of Japan's National Institute for Environmental Studies told viewers, "The [IBUKU satellite] map is to help us discover how much each region needs to reduce CO2 [carbon dioxide] emissions."

#10  Curry said that Muller et al "are not hiding any data or otherwise engaging in any scientifically questionable practice." Contrast that with East Anglia, mentioned briefly in paragraph 2.

And, of course, the first paragraph and the headline proclaim that the Skeptic says the Global Warming true believers were right all along. The spinners are at it again.

It will be interesting to see what peer review concludes about these two reports. It will also be interesting to see whether true believers on all sides of the issue can put their war drums aside for a few minutes and actually read the data with open minds.

BTW, don't take what the news media say about the report as fact. My husband, a scientist, has not in over 30 years read a general news media article--about his field or any other field he's familiar with-- in which the popular media had any grasp of what the scientists were actually saying.
