[Chicago Tribune] Kentucky U.S. Sen. Rand Paul brought his presidential campaign to Chicago on Wednesday, appealing to African-Americans on the South Side, entrepreneurs downtown and Republicans in the suburbs..
On a stage set up on a blacktop parking lot in front of an American flag mural at 66th Street and South King Drive, Paul continued a unique approach for GOP White House contenders -- making an appeal to African-Americans who tend to favor Democrats.
Paul opened his speech by referring to the "black lives matter" refrain used by protesters after the controversial deaths of African-American men at the hands of police. Paul said the phrase reminds him of the deaths of Eric Garner, who was choked to death by officers in New York, and Freddie Gray, who was fatally injured in police custody in Baltimore. But Paul said the phrase also has meaning in Chicago.
"When I hear people say, 'Black lives matter,' I think of Jacele Johnson, who is 4 years old and got shot this weekend just a few blocks from here," Paul said of the Englewood girl who doctors say is swiftly recovering after being shot on the left side of her head Friday night outside a family gathering. "You may be saying to yourself, 'Why is this white guy saying black lives matter, what does he know about crime in my neighborhood?' Well, I've got crime in my neighborhood too. ... We've got some kind of thing going on in our country, and we need to come to grips with it."
Paul then talked about a horrific 2011 case in his home state. "In my little town in Kentucky, a white woman cut a baby out of another white woman.

I would say it is more of a cultural problem. There is a reason that poverty is passed from one generation to another in this country and it isn't because of lack of opportunity.

Government can't provide you salvation, government can't save you. … Ultimately, salvation is something you accept yourselves.
Call it racial, cultural, or spiritual…whatever. Paul maybe off on somethings but he’s spot on this one. Government dependence is at the root of much of the poverty in America – and by extension crime. And it’s a pretty good counter message to…Hi, I’m Hillary Clinton…vote for me and I will solve all your income inequality problems.

In one sense, all crime is a spiritual problem but I don't think you want to redefine the reasons for crime in this way--a person's lack of morality is not an excuse for their crime. They broke the law. I can see criminal defense attorneys jumping on this defense. Next, they will be asking the churches to intervene in the criminal justice system. That sounds a little too much like either a wrist slap or in the other extreme, Sharia Law.

I've been noticing lots of people piling on to Paul. Well, nuts to them. What Paul did was epic. He's a hero. He might otherwise be flawed, but who cares? I'd take 1 Rand Paul over 20 John McCains.

Calling cultural issues race issues has been the game for some time. Easier to call someone a racist than right. The real problem with black culture is they vilify anyone that tries to escape through hard work and education. It's fine if you are super-talented though, so everyone bets it all against the odds. Then when that fails what have you got?

Iblis, I can't vote for Paul now, he's said too many stupid things. However, I agree I'd take 20 Rand Pauls to 1 John McCain. I like Rand out there injecting thought provoking comments and making folks think about things, I just don't want him President.

Ditto on #9. I like idea men/wymn, outside the box thinkers. Great to have a beer with, inspire dialogue, a serious contemplative moment, a good laugh. President of the United States.... mebe not.
A little longer on the braai, no dripping blood, perhaps additional seasoning.
[Daily Mail] A US military C-17 transport aircraft that usually carries at least 100 troops flew to Geneva Airport to pick up Secretary of State John Kerry and flew him to Boston where he'll be treated for a broken leg. A bit of overkill on the EVAC. No one ever said what caused the bike accident, curb to jump up, etc. Other than the painfully obvious, is Kerry suffering from other medical problems, traumas ?
The Air Force plane touched down in Switzerland on Monday after taking off from a US base in Ramstein, Germany, and then headed to Massachusetts after collecting the 71-year-old politician.
Kerry tweeted out 'big thanks' to his well-wishers and said he looked forward to getting his leg set and getting back to work at the State Department. Probably a mission assigned to the 86th Aeromedical Evacuation Squadron out of Ramstein, AB. I hope the airframe was, or is not needed elsewhere for a legitimate mission.

FWIW, a busted leg in a 71-year old isn't a good thing, and if SecState managed to bust it coming off a bike he probably dinged himself up pretty good. The guy is in the line of succession, and all things considered I've got no problem with this. On the other hand...if anybody got shafted out of a ride home, then I've got a problem.
And I have no doubt we'll hear about it right quickly.

It's likely the same one he flew in on. Unless SecState is traveling high profile, i.e. one of the AF Gulfstreams, they usually have an unmarked cargo flight with what is basically a luxo travel trailer inside. It's basically a portable apartment.

DoD is the fetch boy for State. Has been for a while. It was the then Dept of War that rebuilt Germany and Japan, not State. How's the 'development' record been since State took the drivers seat?
I didn't know that about the SecState's travel arrangements - back in the day I had a couple chances to see what they like to refer to as 'comfort pallets', and they can be pretty damned nice. Best one I ever saw was the one permanently mounted in 'MAC One' when it was a C-141 - that was also the one where a four star 'borrowed' the plane to get from Europe back to the states and brought several female enlisted 'aides' with him.

I'm thinking the C-17 was required for the ego.

Not sure where you got this but not true. Flys in an AF SAM (Special Air Mission) converted 757ER unless flying on AF 1 w/POTUS. Chances are the C-17 could get him back quicker especially if the SAM crew had "crew rest" issues. I've seen SECTSTATE goes wheels up/down numerous times. Always in a SAM bird.

If he's not on a SAM, he's 'BINGO' for his COMS package for the duration of the flight. Makes me think his condition might be more serious than what the media has released.

They have mobile comm package they take. Not exactly "hand held" but portable. Would depend the right connections on the C-17 but he was never out of touch (comm-wise that is). The TS and data stuff is a little different.

Hitting the curb - I heard on local talk radio yesterday that France has 'double curbs' (what that looks like, I have no idea) which may have contributed to the crash.
Three things - a) JFK's likely ridden those roads enough that he should have known about this; b) from what I hear about JFK's riding ability, I would not ride with him; c) I have about 50,000 lifetime miles on a bike - I can recall eight crashes, none of them caused by hitting a curb.

I have a friend - chemistry prof - who got cornered into either a jersey barrier or a curb by a car & broke his arm and collarbone bad enough to need to get a bunch of pins. And *he* wasn't doing 30 mph plus going down a mountain, which is what I heard elsewhere was what Kerry was doing when he hit his curb.

Someone from the Air Force should throw Kerry's bike over the Whitehouse fence in a symbolic gesture of solidarity.
[Breitbart] Limbaugh said Paul may have gone a little too far with those remarks. Tree, falling apple, gravitational impacts, trajectory, that sort of thing.
"He may have jumped the shark with that because he started to walk that back," Limbaugh said.
Limbaugh noted that Paul had to walk that back somewhat on the Fox News Channel earlier.
"Alright now -- that didn't sit well," he said. "You can imagine some of the Republicans thought that was a little bit over the top -- other presidential candidates.

Rand jumped the shark when he blamed W for ISIS. You might disagree with our going in but I think pretty much everyone agrees (including Obama) that the war was won, at least until Obama pulled everyone out.
