US surgeon general calls for warning labels on social media platforms

[Al Jazeera] The United States surgeon general has called on Congress to require social media platforms to carry warning labels on their effects on young people’s lives, similar to those now mandatory on cigarette boxes.

In a Monday opinion piece in The New York Times

, Dr Vivek Murthy said that social media is a contributing factor in the mental health crisis among young people.

"It is time to require a surgeon general’s warning label on social media platforms, stating that social media is associated with significant mental health harms for adolescents. A surgeon general’s warning label, which requires congressional action, would regularly remind parents and adolescents that social media has not been proved safe," Murthy said. "Evidence from tobacco studies show that warning labels can increase awareness and change behavior."

While this is likely a hidden Political warning to the Social Media giants, DC Swampers wants more campaign $$$$$.

My suggestion to the United States Surgeon General. Stick to Medical Issues and stay out of Politics and social issues.

BTW: In case, someone suggests giving the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH) such power.

Remember the Federal toe in the door warning and the DC Swamp/Democrats establishing Mental norms.

We had that on cigarettes since the '60s. It didn't stop a cabal of lawyers and states to extract money from the companies (while the feds subsidized the tobacco farmers) that basically ended up as more money into government waste and lawyers' bank accounts.
