In March 2011, al-Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula declared the governate an Islamic Emirate after seizing control of the region. The New York Times fastidiously reported that those in control, while Islamic hard boyz, are not in fact al-Qaeda, but something else that looks, tastes, smells, and acts the same. Local news quoted an official at the Unity Cement Company, Bates, in Abyan, that the son of the commander of the security belt operations in the STC made a phone call to the company’s management threatening that if the company wouldn’t help him to travel to Cairo for treatment, he would kidnap the chief engineer of the factory in the company, Engineer Mohammed Abdel Moneim.
The official called on the leadership of the STC militia in Abyan to take the necessary measures to prevent and repeat such behaviors.
