The boy at Richneck Elementary School in Newport News, Virginia, intentionally shot his teacher Abby Zwerner, who has been described as bubbly and outgoing

Incident occurred after the class had finished reading a story before art lesson

Children fled to another classroom for safety, where they remained in lockdown

Zwerner, 25, had life-threatening injuries but her condition is improving

Classes have been canceled for the 550 students at the school until Wednesday

Under Virginia law guns need to be secured from children under the age of 14
