Scott Walker erodes college professor tenure
h/t Instapundit
Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker's trailblazing effort to weaken tenure protections at public colleges and universities is now a reality with his signing of a $73 billion budget on Sunday.

The effort has outraged unions and higher education groups, leaving them fearful that other lawmakers will follow suit to unravel labor protections in higher education that have long been considered sacred ground.
Maybe if you people didn't treat university tenured faculty appointments as your private club...

#2 Well, when as a faculty and administration you actively suppress free speech and free association and institute a Stalinist PC agenda, what real defense do you have in protecting the now dead concept of 'academic freedom'? /rhet question

#3 Tenure will not protect a faculty member attacked by the PC police and thus is worthless. Tenure was a game to protect lefties before they had control, and now to protect lazies who just want to coast.

Either use tenure properly to protect uncomfortable idead or just admit universities are controlled by the brainwashed mob.

#5 Gov. Walker is quite impressive. He mentioned in his announcement speech last evening that his grandfather had worked at Barber-Coleman in Rockford, IL. He is undoubtedly aware of what has taken place with our industrial base in the last 50 years. This knowledge and the desire to do something about it, earns my vote.

#6 Tenure doesn't mean much anymore--it is a dying institution. In the past, it was a protection for free speech and academic freedom. Today, even with tenure you can be fired for "cause." Cause is anything deemed a reason for firing by an administrator--often some violation of political correctness. Today, tenure is usually granted on the basis of how much research money you can bring to an institution. In the faculty evaluation scheme, federal dollars count more that dollars from industry or other sources. The academic tenure system today is similar to the system used for the evaluation of big time college football coaches; your contract is extended depending upon your win-loss record. Personally, I don't have a problem with Walker going after tenure; however, the current tenure system IMHO doesn't stand for much.

#10 IIRC the colleges and universities are still free to do as they please; this takes it out of the realm of state law.
