'Brain-eating amoeba', dengue claim two lives in Karachi
|
[DAWN] A young woman and a middle-aged man on Tuesday fell prey to two different deadly diseases in city hospitals, the former to Naegleria fowleri, better known as the 'brain-eating amoeba', and the latter to the much-dreaded dengue fever.

"She was the eighth victim of naegleria this year in Sindh and first young woman since January last year," a senior health official told Dawn.
The ages of the naegleria victims have so far ranged between four years and 49 years.
He said teams of the provincial health department took samples of water from her house.
Another official said like all the previous cases this year, the woman had no history of swimming -- one of the key causes behind the primary amoebic meningoencephalitis (PAM) or naegleria fowleri.
The amoeba is found in rivers, lakes, springs, drinking water networks and poorly chlorinated swimming pools.
"This amoeba can only be eliminated by use of properly chlorinated water," said the health official, who admitted that the water being supplied elsewhere in Sindh was more dangerous as far as chlorination was concerned.
