#3 Wouldn't that have some effect on the local 'climate' and maybe even some impact of 'global climate change'? Maybe all that water into the desert would lower the sea level, offsetting the glaciers melting?

#6 Unless it's got a layer of clay under it, I dunno.
Other than that, it's theirs, sure. Go for it.

#7 Many proposals for this over the past 80 years or so.

A canal to connect it with the Med would be about 60 Miles long. If the canal were wide enough and deep enough the water falling into the depression could generate a lot of electricity, perhaps as much as 200-400 MW with evaporation keeping the water level from rising too much.

But the cost of excavation is enormous and besides excavation, there are many unexploded bombs and mines dating from WWII.

#9 Egypt has such a serious excess of population that they’re building an entire new city to take the pressure off Cairo. They need not look to Gaza for pick’n’shovel bodies to die digging their canal… and the men would be grateful for the opportunity, especially if a death benefit is promised to the family.
