#1 About time they did something about this...Don't the Chinese have their grubby little hands in there?

#2 The expansion of the canal that took place between about 2004 and 2016 cost a lot of money, probably over $4B. I'm sure China did a lot of the financing as their companies would be big beneficiaries. The govt of Panama is getting a lot of money in increased fees and the canal improvements are probably earning 10-15% return on investment. US freight probably pays well over $1B/yr to use the canal but saves more than that in time and fuel savings.

#3 Since the canal spans across Panama, it would seem to be a good choke point in 'migration'.

#4 While I think what Carter did was world-class stupid, don’t see how we can take it back with any sort of legitimate rationale.
Trump is out of line on this one.

#5 Let’s not invade more countries. If he’s talking about a business deal, I’m in.

#6 Trump is crazy and you shouldn't mess with him.

#7 I totally agree, Trump is out of line here.

This is gonna be a crappy, frustrating four years, I'm afraid (and I hope I am wrong).

#8 Maximalist opening position to reset negotiation expectations, possibly. Overton Window stuff.

#9 Perhaps we're talking "Art of the Deal" here?

#10 I think you have it TW! Bold opening, but just possibly credible, sets the deal opening salvo.
